I guess there's legal reasons why you can't get one normally (At least not a proper Warship as opposed to a trade vessel), but a Headman can give a freeman a ship? (Or rather, can pass the request up to the Jarl, who then signs off on it presuming it's not a bullshit reason for doing so?)
It's more that they're stupid expensive. So expensive that you could spend the entire proceeds of a couple raids on purchasing one.

Horse and Sword. Ship and Sail. These are the traditional rewards for quests, the prices paid to hire a Hero.

Hah, and of course, taking on a Quest is also a good way to accumulate Weight and other intangible benefits, huh?

Still, anyone who owns a Ship is pretty much at the pinnacle of the Karl class, aren't they?

But in fact SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE in actual practice. Considering the army of draugr and shit. So kind of bullshit that they're letting him skate by facing our actual charges
In fairness, at the time that they imposed the partial outlawing, we hadn't made those charges. The court (and Logi Firehair in particular) acted somewhat impulsively... which is not out of character or unrealistic for this judicial system.

There's a reason why in modern societies trials are very formalized with a lot of ritual and planning and everything carefully scheduled in advance, to the point where pulling surprise shenanigans in court is often enough to get you in trouble even if logically it's something that would strengthen your case significantly with the jury.

It's to prevent outcomes very much like this, which are not entirely unusual in societies that focus on individuals or small groups who informally have the power to dispense "high, middle, and low justice."

oh my, oh my!
guess we got a new farmhand! :V
that, or a janitor...
Given the nature of the duties on a sizeable farm that requires several adults to work, there is little real distinction between a janitor and a new farmhand; there will always be enough scut-work that can be offloaded onto the 'janitor' that frees up the others to take on other tasks.

Well, that explains the reaction. You still fucked things up, Logi.

Yeah, like I said, he got emotional. It's hopefully salvageable with us killing Horra, though.

This was my immediate assumption honestly. Makes sense. We'll need to decide whether to keep it or sell it long term, but we have at least one voyage we want to go on...

I'll note that I'm still not sure if the puppet is gonna be useful. With Blackhand's assurances I'm willing to believe that it likely won't attack us, but I'd still bet that it only takes commands in Chinese which would make it just kind of stand there (meaning we'd need to reverse engineer it and make one of our own for it to be useful). That may be me being overly pessimistic and it's worth a try, but just as a note.

"Is Havir...?" You trail off as Dorri and Logi blink, seemingly having forgotten your presence.

"Horra's father?" Logi nods. "Yeah, yeah he was."

'He was a good man, one that did not deserve the end I gave him.'
Blackhand, the fuck

Anyway, there's a really interesting narrative twist going on here.

Hasvir kills Drysalt's Master (?). Blackhand kills Hasvir.

Horra kills (two of) Blackhand's sons. Steinarr swears vengeance, chases him to the ends of the Earth, etc.

Horra takes Drysalt as a master/mentor/ally/etc. Starts doing evil shit with the very Troll his father killed.

Halla stumbles into all of this. Now she's gonna be fighting Horra. But this time the sides are flipped.

Makes you wonder if there's a younger Drysalt around. For theming reasons.

What kind of quest would entail Horse and Sword? Since it seems you can pay for that with less than a raid. Unless the Horse/Sword was really good.

Get strong enough that we can carry it, that put it into our Fylgja.

AN: Surprise, there's more.

But this is probably going to be the last for today.

All that's left now is the talk with Elephant Guy+Haleikr, talk with Folkmarr+Audrikr, and then more talking in the form of Gabriel.

And then the !!Fun!! begins.
Loving Dorri and Logis interaction.
Kinda wish Halla got the chance to chat with them while preparing for the Horra removal, and just casually mention "oh, and I think Horra violates the Ancestral Exchange, he is producing weapons like this [unload ballista], I got my hands on it when the bandits Horra had them delivered to didn't watch over them well enough, he had a visitor, a not quite human body in a cloak blocking all light, and after we saw him use a sunlight weapon I heard from the Ducklings living on my land that the Lurkalings are using sunlight weapons".

Logi: "Fuck, ANOTHER reason to outlaw and hunt down Horra?!"
Halla: "I like to be thorough".

Interestingly enough, this isn't entirely true.

While I've abstracted it a bit for this quest, a farmhand would not be expected to do things like pile manure or things like that. He gets paid a wage and even that can be an insult depending on the job that is done.

A farmhand has higher standing than a shepherd (who is someone who receives only room and board, not wages like a farmhand). The shepherd would pile the manure, the farmhand wouldn't. And, if there were thralls, the thralls would (generally) be doing the less desirable tasks.

It was straight up illegal to assign farmhands demeaning jobs like watching the sheep.

Now, obviously this is a bit different for the Quest (because I forgot, lmao) but yeah.

Have you ever heard the tale of Sigurd the Dragonslayer?

It's not a story The Enemy would tell you

...

The hell kind of thing is it that Horse and Sword is more valuable than Ship and Sail?

Unless we're talking about some wild ass shit in both events.

Logi: "Fuck, ANOTHER reason to outlaw and hunt down Horra?!"
Two, technically: Aiding and abetting bandits, Breaching the Ancestral Path.

I wonder if "Horra Hasvishame" is a more accurate kenning for him now.

Also wait. Everyone knows that Blackhand killed Hasvir, and that Steinarr is Blackhand's son.

Whoosh. And Steinarr isn't dead lmao.

Norse Karna/Achilles? WTF is the Horse and Sword if it's that much more valuable than a FUCKING SHIP?
A sword that does this (not from sharpness, mind you, this test here was entirely the strength of Gram. The sharpness test comes later)

Well, that sounds pretty good to me!

Also, historically, if you wanted to participate in a Thing, you'd have to ride there on a horse. So, if you wanted to bring a case against someone, you needed a horse. If you wanted to be able to defend yourself, you also needed a horse.
