It'd probably be best to let Eike have some accomplishments all her own. I don't want her to be suffering from imposter syndrome in the future cause she feels like everything great about her was given to her.

Familiars seem pretty personal, too, so not only just ordering one but someone else ordering one for you feels a bit... Eh.

Thanks! Added to my vote post.

If you want some effort and personalisation, we can keep track of our share of the favour from actions she helps us with artefact/papers, then spend it on for "[COLLEGE] Familiar (Specific Common, Eike's choice) - 5CF" when she's accrued what we feel is enough.

I do agree it's a bit eh just buying one for her. The narrative results would be cute, though. Probably enough that I wouldn't feel bad.

You're almost certainly correct right, but the joy of approval voting is that it is not risky to make the attempt. There have been more unlikely turnarounds in the past and if the below gains traction people can go back and edit their votes, if they want. Which is likely to happen.
I guess it won't hurt to add it to the list of other plans with The Gambler on Liminal Realm. And there have been lots of upsets in the quest before. It's not out of the question.

What you want to do, my adventurous friend, is make a portal to the warp.
I mean, our current example of how to produce AV is basically, "Make a portal to the warp without actually making a portal to the warp." Meanwhile, all current speculation on alternatives are "Make a portal to the warp (and carefully control it with machinery now lost to the ages)," "Make a portal to the warp (and bury it under a good sized hill before guarding it with a spirit)," or "Make a portal to the warp (and bury it under an entire mountain range before burning it to ash once you're done with it.)"

Though in all seriousness, trying to figure out if a Liminal realm can produce AV in one way or another would probably be step two or three. Step one is "Find one or more ways to protect or else reliably (and if possibly cleanly) shut down a liminal realm and/or portal."

So far candidates for that include there's Gazul's Zharrvengryn, the Aetheric shunt, whatever the smiths of Vaul and the spirit guardian do with the Tarn of Tears, divine assistance, Whatever the Hedgewise know about dealing with unwanted influence in the Forest of Shadows, and whatever Teclis did to make the Colleges of Magic.

RE: Liminal Realms and the uses thereof, I'm very hopeful that we can get some hammerspace out of them. IIRC Boney said that a portable Liminal realm would have to be put inside a soul, i.e. Mathilde's, which was very intimidating...

Except we're literally voting to staple a hostile warp entity to our soul this very turn, and to be honest, an empty box feels several steps down from that in intimidation and difficulty.

I'm quietly hopeful that the lessons learnt from the Apparition Binding will give us a viable path to invent our own personal hammerspace, at which point our options in loot acquisition expand dramatically in both size and stealth.

Piety action: bring Eike to the shrine to see if she wants a Chough familiar. Do not mention it's a shrine or bring attention to the strange picture of Ranald and Shallya on the wall. Do not answer questions on why there are kids in painting. Do not acknowledge anything to do with the Ranaldian faith.

The sheer confusion this will result in will power her Ulgu spells for the next two decades.

Staff Notice - When people ask you to stop, then stop.
I strongly dislike you. Never speak to me again.
I feel like you're overreacting a little here, Codex. I am pretty sure your interlocutor is not acting in bad faith.

I love Picklepikki's gold standard for when someone is asking for engagement or replies, but frankly most of us (me at least) don't have the patience or attention-to-detail to have noticed that. (Or sensitivity to recognize this pattern. I am rather impressed with Picklepikki on this.)

I am absolutely fine with Coin on the Red Rider but I will approval vote the liminal coin variant to see if it gets a shot; I'm pretty indifferent between the two.

Apropos running shoes... Do we know Mathilde's preference in shoes? Probably something sturdy but like? Riding boots or more lower? With studs or without? Wild or polished leather?

Edit: heels! What about the heels!

Added this to my vote post, because I also have concerns about liminal realm making in general, and especially without the Gambler.

I don't exactly appreciate having to address this again, but since I'm still thinking about it, I'll just air this out so I'm no longer as annoyed.

I am not obligated to give anyone the benefit of the doubt. I don't know anyone in thsi thread personally, and while I like to think I know some people vaguely, that doesn't mean I consider them friends. I am in no way, shape or form, under the impression that I should give someone time and care when they accost me because they were mad at the way I worded a response to a question someone asked of me. What they said towards the end was not only exceptionally rude, but also incredibly passive aggressive and genuinely hurtful:
I'm expressing my own feelings, and maybe it's my fault I didn't coat them in sad feeling-words and just let sentence structure do the talking, but now that the need for it has been made clear:
This person was referring to me here. Can you now see why I got so mad? Why I want this person to leave me alone? Maybe they didn't intend to hurt me in this way by implying that I coat my words in "sad feeling words and let sentence structure do the talking", but I am not willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. I don't have the time or headspace to bother with someone I don't actually know when there are more important things to be done.

Now, let's let this be and leave this alone. No more talking about this. I'm done.

I feel that just swapping the coin from apparitions to Liminal Realms doesn't really drop the level of risk though.

They're both actions that are potentially quite dangerous so if the concern is that you want to use gambler as a safety net (or just don't want to do liminal realms) then you should choose a plan that doesn't include both actions.

Although if you think apparition hunting is significantly more dangerous compared to liminal realms then just the straight swap makes sense.

Personally I think they're both potentially dangerous but can't really assess how dangerous they are. Apparition hunting though seems more like the danger is guaranteed though compared to the liminial realm where I think it's only dangerous on a critical fumble (although admittedly getting sucked into the warp or something somehow feels more dangerous then a ghost sword through the neck).

Thinking on it, what do people think about putting the coin on windherding, since it has two spellcasting rolls that we know can be affected, while the composition of the other actions is less known? Apparitions would only really significantly matter if we intend to bind it right away, since I'm not too worried about our capabilities in fighting it or finding it, and liminal realm only had the one visible roll.

If Eike gets a familiar, either through us or her own efforts, she'd need to spend at least a turn's action forming a bond and then as her Master we have to monitor her for Familiar Obsession going forwards.

It's an option, though.
Ohhh. Our very lucky 'familiar power' rolls of +1 to Magic and Mind-Sharing/Telepathy do make me feel a lot less jealous about Eike getting the mark of Ulgu. I am grateful for the reminder.

Edit: heels! What about the heels!
Disspointing as it may be, I'd expect her to prefer comfortable ones that are the best for combat/swordfighting. She's a lord magister and can wear what she pleases.

I think that at Mathilde's height, wearing heels probably looks she is like trying to look taller.

Probably, though I more meant the smaller heals that are still acceptable to walk in. Mathilde never seemed the stiletto lady.

Nah, Eike should go on a quest to get her familiar once she becomes a Journeywoman - just like we did with Wolf. Let's give her the chance to grow naturally rather than essentially pushing her into a direction.

Now a staff is certainly something that we could absolutely give as a graduation present. It is a great gift but still less intrusive than: "Pick a pet and then bind your soul to it".

Windherding is just less impactful than Apparitions or AV - at least at the moment. Sure maybe in several turns we'll be able to unearth its hidden potential but right now Apparitions are very useful for Elfcation and AV is our (current) personal magic research Magnus Opus.

This isn't necessarily true, because in contrast to approved Windherding items that include enchanting two known spells, we have no idea at all what Mathilde and Egrimm are going to do to try and make a Seviroscope. Maybe this turn they'll just do research, which will include a number of rolls from each of them. Maybe they'll have to invent an entirely new spell and there will be some research and spell development rolls around that. Maybe they'll think about it for a while and find that the idea is completely unworkable. Who knows?

The worst thing that can happen on the liminal realms action is that we miscast and a demon eats us.

The worst thing that can happen on the windherding action is that we miscast and a demon eats us.

The worst thing that can happen on the apparition action is, you guessed it, we miscast and a demon eats us.

Magic do be crazy like that.

We should not look at the coin as disaster mitigation, but more "where would it be most useful for Ranald to intervene and help us out with exactly two (2) luck themed divine miracles".

For Liminal Realms we're mitigating the danger with a good pair of running shoes (which is SOP for magical research like this) in an area where demons will struggle to manifest. Not ideal, but the last time we messed it up we only got a moderate chaos manifestation and no immediate harm was done. Honestly, I don't blame people wanting divine backup on this one, even if I'm personally very confident that we'll be fine.

With windherding, we're in a controlled environment with an equally skilled wizard helping us. The last time we messed it up, we got a very minor miscast that did practically nothing. This is probably the action we need Ranald's help with the least.

With apparitions, we're hunting a monster that literally eats wizards. And yes, we have a golden punch wizard with us. But divine backup would probably be more useful here for a) trying to find them and b) trying to avoid being ambushed by them.

I don't believe feet and footwear have come up very much in quest (Boney isn't Tarantino), but I think I recall she wore boots on her date with Panoramia to the Tarn?
