Hmm. Beginning to wonder if Gretel considers herself an 'Umgi of Proven Trustworthiness', or has such aspirations...
"What support would King Byrrnoth be willing to provide to a theoretical Umgi of proven trustworthiness who might be carving a principality out of the area?"

"Generous monetary and logistic support to establish it, and after that 'most favoured nation' treatment for imports and exports. King Byrrnoth does not want to be seen as directly intervening to prevent too much attention turning this way, but we can organize arrangements with suitably discreet and trustworthy mercenary companies. He is also willing to establish a treaty granting sanctuary rights to all citizens of a theoretical friendly principality."
What's better than spending your time digging about in ruins for wealth?
Sitting about in comfort ruling, while that wealth flows through your military outpost/toll booth and your mercenary friends excise a levy for you.

I think it's more the Besiegers she's working with in general.
You nod. "Very well. Gretel?"

"The Besiegers will be active around here for the foreseeable future," she says. "There's always work protecting caravans, and Barak Varr has us on retainer for some ideas they have in the Border Princes. And I've heard rumours of Nehekharan tombs in the area, if I do manage to track them down then a study of them would be of great interest to the Order."

Working on retainer for Barak Varr to support their ambitions in the Border Princes. Good way to prove your trustworthiness, that.

What did Algard try to do in those places again??
You mean Alric, right? The former Light Patriarch? Algard is the Grey Patriarch.
You hear of his talks with Grand Count Konstantin of Wissenland, and how they sputter to a halt after Mira tips off her hopefully soon-to-be counterpart of the Amethyst Order, and Elspeth von Draken needs only exert a fraction of her influence for Alric to find that Wissenland is no longer interested in the Light Order's partnership in certain sensitive matters. You hear of him trying to insert himself into the Sylvania situation and being politely but firmly evicted after he demonstrates he's more interested in digging into the fate of the late Magister Patriarch Hexensohen than he is on making any sort of contribution to the ongoing campaign.

Assuming you meant Alric, in Wissenland he tried to get involved in the Under-Nuln conflict against the skaven before Elspeth kicked him out. Wissenland is on the back foot in that conflict.

In Stirland Roswita thought he was going to help against the vampires in Sylvania, but instead he just wanted to investigate the circumstances behind former Magister Patriarch Hexensohn's death.

Edit: Weber'd. Again. :o

I'm kind of sad to realize that Panoramia isn't that close to her parents. I had kind of hoped that Mathilde could meet them when Panoramia went to Altdorf for her magisterial exams, and that they might accept Mathilde as part of their family. I feel like Mathilde has friends and colleagues, but outside of Panoramia and Regimand, there isn't really anybody that would be close enough to be family, and that just makes me kind of sad.

Family is overrated. People act like it's the end-all, be-all of personal relationships (at least ones that don't involve sex, which is a whole 'nother set of warped priorities) and it winds up being the cause of (or cover for) some really messed up shit. If you get along well, cool. If you don't, oh well, they're some people who you knew growing up.

I know this isn't the same situation, certainly because it's not Panoramia's status as an LGBT person that causes friction with her parents, but I perfectly understand her reticence. I imagine many LGBT+ people do as well. Parents aren't always what you want them to be.

Eugh, I finally reached the Cult of Ulric White Dwarf Article. It has a timeline of Middenland that explains the whole Carroburg situation, and uh, it's more complicated than I thought. I'll try to explain it as best I can.

1124 IC: Count Mandred Von Zelt of Middenheim rallies the forces of Middenheim to fight back against the Skaven during the Black Plague, saving the Empire and soon after being elected Emperor after defeating the Skaven at the Battle of the Howling Hills.

1152 IC: Emperor Mandred is assassinated by Skaven, he has no clear successor so the Empire starts squabbling. Baron Reinhart of Carroburg claims to be Mandred's heir and declares himself Count of Middenland, so Baron Erich of Midddenheim invades Carroburg, kills Reinhart and takes the Elector Count title for himself.

1360 IC: Ar-Ulric Krieger enters a disagreement with the Count of Middenheim/Middenland and decides to move out to Talabheim where he is accepted. Since the Elected Emperor at the time was a Stirlander (Talabecland and Stirland have a long rivalry), Countess Otilla of Talabecland/Talabheim was miffed and so she declared herself Empress. The Ar-Ulric had the authority to crown the Emperor at the time, because Sigmar was crowned by an Ar-Ulric, so he supported her, which started the Civil War for real. Every Talabeclander Emperor afterwards called themselves Ottillan Emperors to honor Otilla.

1547 IC: The Ar-Ulric and Grand Duke of Middenheim reach an agreement, reconciling relations at the cost of the Cult of Ulric taking an oath of celibacy to prevent a rival dynasty forming. The Ar-Ulric returns to Middenheim and crowns the "Wolf Emperor" Siegfried of Middenheim/Middenland, which truly starts the "Age of Three Emperors" for real.

1550 IC: "Emperor" Siegfried leads an army to besiege Talabheim and take it over and is rebuffed. When he comes back he finds that the nobles of Middenland and Middenheim have renounced his rule and he's been replaced.

1812 IC: Baron Leonhard, brother to Count Karl-Heinz of Middenland/Middenheim, proclaims himself rightful Count and launches a brief but bloody coup. Count Karl-Heinz is ousted and forms a rival court in Carroburg supported by the court of Reikland with troops and weapons as long as Karl-Heinz helped Reikland with their own war with Wissenland.

Count Karl-Heinz then launches a siege against his brother Leonhard in Middenheim, trying to move through the tunnels in the Ulricsberg until Leonhard orders the tunnels closed. After the failed siege, Baron Leonhard is recognised as the Count of Middenheim/Middenland.

1865 IC: Jurgen, the Grandson of Count Karl-Heinz and currently ruling Carroburg, is rumored to be plotting to acquire the Electorship for himself from the Count of Middenheim/Middenland. The Count of Middenland invades Carroburg only to find it being defended by Reiklander troops, including a regiment of Greatswords that became known as the "Carroburg Greatswords" ever since. Jurgen the Baron/Count of Carroburg slays the Count of Middenland/Middenheim in single combat, reclaiming the title of his grandfater Karl-Heinz. In payment to the Reiklanders, Jurgen grants Reikland the former Count's wealth and estates, which might have included Carroburg. It's never really specified what he gave them.

There's a bunch of retcons all over the place, but I tried to organise this in a way that made sense and fit in general. It shouldn't be taken as gospel, but I merged the parts of White Dwarf and Heirs of Sigmar in a way that fit and explained things. The Age of Three Emperors was a goddamn mess.

Changing back to this because I do not want to cause Panoramia discomfort, and at the end of the day I do not think the Jades know much, hence why I am voting no to begin with.

But regardless, if you literally can't conceive of a highly placed academic rejecting their colleagues' position on a contentious topic where there is no consensus opinion in their department/field for reasons relating to academic/office politics rather than because it is the objectively correct conclusion then I don't really know what to tell you. Other than maybe "try getting to know some actual real-life academics, and prepare to be shocked at how outright typical that actually is."
I am well aware of the inability of academics being entirely incapable of agreeing with each other, the thing is, however, that if this knowledge has been useful, it would almost certainly be utilized, because this is the goddamn waystones. That it hasn't been and was not built upon speaks volumes to its actual usefulness to anything regarding animation and creation of those rocks.

Pretty much. Unless one wishes to argue that the Patriarch of the Jades is himself a fool who would rather see the land poisoned by Dhar than allow his rivals to have any political power we can only conclude the rituals in their present form are of no to little use (less than the effort it takes to perform them).

We don't actually need useful. We just need a piece of the puzzle.

We don't actually need useful. We just need a piece of the puzzle.
Fair enough, but the phrasing was relatively clear. Even when Mathilde said she didn't really need legitimately useful knowledge, he was dubious of the value of what he had to offer, despite pretty clearly knowing exactly what it is that he was offering.

We don't actually need useful. We just need a piece of the puzzle.
Yes, but we need many pieces and thus it behooves us to take the pieces most useful for the least cost in attaining. With the Jade order there is a high probability of their piece being a dud or at the very least providing less for the amount of work put in than we would achieve else where. Thus while the Jade order will provide some value I do not see it worthwhile right now. In the future they might be useful e.g. if we need their map, but that can wait for a later stage.
