I wonder if there's some insights to be gained from comparing Druchii and Eonir romance(smut). Perhaps even a paper, if we ever run low on topics, although I think we might need Asur and Asrai as well to compare and contrast for that.

You know, I am both amazed and utterly unsurprised that Romance is winning out over even Loec. Give Mathilde another decade or two and she'll probably be the most well-versed person in romance on the entire planet. Especially if she can get a connection to Asur booksellers during the Elfcation, and maybe find an Asrai connection somewhere.

The total comes out to 4828.8 crowns, which is quite a hefty sum!

If we want to be conservative, then Borek's debt at 2000 coins measures out to 2600 crowns, so assuming we keep enough to pay that off in reserve, that leaves 4828.8 - 2600 = 2228.8 crowns to spend freely.

I am not comfortable taking risks with the Borek debt.

2228 crowns. Now knock off:

[ ] Furnish the research spaces of the Waystone Project HQ (specify how much: 100gc for adequate, 500gc for College-grade, 2000gc for Laurelorn-grade)

Because you know people will vote for 2000gc. Now spend we're at 228, and that's what you're buying books out of. Not leaving much of a margin.

[] [PURCHASE] Mundane Lab equipment for the Laurelon Lab. It will be much easer to set up if you are just moving it, instead of trying to build it on the spot. You do not want a repeat of Wizard Chic. Hire a temporary warehouse for it at a convenient location near Laurelorn so you don't have to ship it all the way from K8Ps when you have the rooms ready.

What on earth is going on? Why is "no purchase" being given the DWARF header?

also, a lot of the costs come in batches, so depleting the bank on something we can get for 'free' later doesn't seem right to me.

plus, leading a research project is proving pricey. (I'm half wondering if this is boney hinting that we should look for patrons rather than paying out of pocket.) so again, paying for stuff we get free later is... a bad habit to start.

I'm not familiar with how it's coded, but it looks like it's just a visual bug. The '[DWARF] No purchase.' options in each task category have different vote counts, and if you look at any particular vote it seems to match with the actual category. Like if you look at pickle's vote his only 'no purchase' vote is under College, and the only no purchase namelist that includes him is under the College task.

Regarding money, one thing to keep in mind is that if we do get Spider books that should help with Spider Silk, and since the EIC is in Karag Nar and can make plans around our intel on K8P developments, the EIC should almost certainly get a cut of the new Silk trade.

Which means an appreciable grown in EIC profits, which means more income for us.

So while I'm not wedded to the idea of buying books out of pocket (except Loec, give it to me), the only way I see us running low on cash is if one of the groups we try to recruit for the Waystone Project literally just asks us for cash or open market goods.

Which, I don't know, maybe? I'm not that worried about it.

Though that does give me an idea.

When complimented on her brilliant marketing strategy for getting people to make the trip all the way out to K8P, the Mathilde of the future will simply smile smugly. When a particularly fervent admirer will go on a lengthy rant on all the ways the greatest collection of romance novels is a genius move, Mathilde will grant him a single smug, but approving, nod (she's been around enough dwarfs to take note of how longbeards do things, and work it into her style), like if a slightly slow but not entierly hopeless apprentice has figured out somewith basic but not entirely obvious. Internally, she'll be making detailed notes on why she created the greatest collection of romance novels.

We still have an entire actual science project to fund, and spending twice as much as most expensive default option available on personal comfort and then skimping on lab equipment because we blew the money on our personal pet project would not be a good look.

Looking at it, this is one of the weirdest 5d chess maneuvers Mathilde has made—founding a library, establishing a branch collage, initiating a joint research project with a foreign, isolationist polity, all just to get hold of some silk weaving manuals.

Betterment of the civilised realms, peace between man and elf, fighthing chaos—those are all secondary, a smokescreen for her true ambition: silk bedsheets.

Turns out, the real reason for the oath of poverty was never prevention of abuse.

No, it was because Teclis knew that the grey wizards would create an overcomplicated plan to get their luxuries, which would have "save the world" as "step 7 out of 11" regularly.

I honestly don't understand the concern for saving money when Mathilde has almost 5k gold on hand.

Taking into account previous calculations, we've got enough money to pay off our 2k gold debt to Borek, furnish 2k gold on the Waystone Lab, and still have 228 Gold leftover for miscellaneous expenditures.

That's enough leeway to indulge in some extra purchases, especially for filling out the anemic Divinity section of the Library.

Ok, assume the worst case scenario, and we spend quite a bit of money then someone, let's say Varek Varigsson (Borek's nephew, who is most likely a 30 year old boy), asks us to pay up right now. We can just... get a loan from a Dwarf bank or something. We know they exist, and worst comes to worst we ask Belegar for a loan. We then pay it back over time, as we have done with our debt to the College and our debt to the EIC. Dwarfs are even less likely to charge high interest rates, especially to Mathilde.

Even assuming the unlikely scenario where we get pressured into paying our debt after spending too much, it wouldn't be the end of the world.
Plot twist: Borek becomes the Everchosen, and suddenly it is the end of the world. :V

More honestly and related, I like the idea of Mathilde, at some point, finally resolving the Karag Dum questions and, when asked why she had such dedication to that quest her answer being: "I owed them money."

Might as well read up on the new neighbors then

Why spend gold for +1 books now when we can get maximum bonus books for free in a turn or two? Assuming interest in this topic doesn't wane, what other choices would you want to get from the Library in the upcoming turns? I don't see the urgency in getting these divinity books right away.

As for saving gold, keeping a healthy buffer is what's allowed us to purchase things like the golden arm or 2000gc of lab equipment. I fully expect there to be more surprise purchases that Mathilde might want to splurge on in the future.
