If Ranald is willing/able to use the AV to help us out then this is exactly the time when we want to start burning AV to help ourselves out. Imagine if AV turbo-charges the coin. This action replaces seeing through Pall of Darkness. As BoneM has suggested, Ranald has been willing to launder power for her before, so it's not a crazy longshot.

You underestimate the ability people have to justify things to themselves:

"This [immoral/violent/underhanded] action in order to build greater profits is ok when I do it - after all while I(/the company) am profiting from it, I'm doing it for the empire, and that makes it ok"

----
I've not bothered to expand this into a full paragraph, but I hope that the line above conveys why, in my view "bone-deep patriot" means nothing whatsoever in terms of reassuring me that the problems you dismiss are not an issue.

The name being 'EIC' makes it easy to point to as terrible example of corporate imperialism and violence. If the game's EIC were called some other thing, I would still hold the concerns I do - I am looking at the (game) company itself.

Edit: Like... I don't know how to hammer in: "You underestimate the ability people have to justify doing unethical (murder/slavery/contracts as unequal as to be akin to slavery) things in order to satisfy their desires/goals (i.e. profit)."

The patriot thing is a protection against a very specific failing in your average corporation - in all other ways that corps can go bad, it's just another lever that helps someone make justifications to themselves to someone making harmful choices

"It's for the good of the empire" is a fantastic line to help some people sleep at night.
Except the EIC isn't engaged in immoral/violent/underhanded practices? Mathilde is keeping a close eye on it and instilling best practices into it specifically to avoid that problem from manifesting. While the whole "Eastern Imperial Company" thing does harken to the East India Trade Company, it's simply a joke, not something to be taken seriously. The EITC was infamous for having its own (and massive) private army and navy, not to mention its own private (and large) empire, coupled with enormous abuses and atrocities. The EIC isn't even remotely interested in the same kinds of ambitions--it doesn't have its own private empire and doesn't want one; one of its core principles is "don't skin the sheep", meaning don't exploit your state or populations for the sake of profit, because you'll soon need that population and state to be as strong as possible so you don't die horribly to omnicidal monsters. The only private forces it has are ones strictly for protecting trade routes, and that actually is a vital service that benefits a lot more than just the EIC (since threats to trade routes are at best bandits, and at worst forces of Chaos).

A/N: snippets about Soizic, or Why the Wizard Asked the Damsel. Had a bunny in my head about why Mathilde might reach out to Brettonian Damsels rather than knights, and it turned into an online rather than just a post.

But, uh, why the heck isn't there any plans for Questing Knights?!? Like, since this vote opened I've been completely baffled as to how that happened.

IIRC the plan people discussed prior was to recruit Bretonnian Questing Knights, because we could contact them through Soizic and we'd get a good reason to get Soizic on-screen as a character during the Expedition. And, uh, they're Questing Knights. This is absolutely a proper Quest. Recruiting them is more a matter of seeing who's available then anything else. And they come with super-horse cavalry on top of everything else. Recruiting the Damsels doesn't do any of that: They need to be convinced somehow, we might have trouble even contacting them, and we don't get Soizic on-screen or coming with us on the Expedition.

AFAIK lots of people were interested in voting for Questing Knights but somehow when this vote finally happened that got turned around into voting for the Damsels even though they're different groups in almost every way.

Since there's been so many other plans, here's a plan that's the leading plan only we go for Soizic and Soizic-friends.

[X] Plan Perfectly Balanced

The problem with trying to recruit questing knights is that you're going to get one, they don't come in groups. Their grail questing oath doesn't allow for it. At least that's the interpretation I've always seen. You take the questing vows and you're basically giving up your old life to dedicate your self body and soul to the lady of the lake in a quest that ends in success or death.

"I set down my lance, symbol of the duty... I spurn those whom I love, I relinquish all, and take up the tools of my quest... No obstacle shall stand before me... No plea for help shall find me wanting... No moon will look upon me twice lest I be judged idle... I will give my body, heart and soul to the Lady whom I seek."

So, I don't think we can get groups of questing knights.

there are two plans for questing knights.

one of them is the same as your plan. Plan: Fog Path to Success (A Damsel and Questing Knight, Rune smiths)

so join us! help get the ball rolling!

that's very not true in practice, they tend to group up 'on' the quest.

Speaking of Grail Knights, would Repanse be interested in running off into the chaos wastes? She's a fun Joan of Arc Expy and has the best Bretonnian campaign in Total War.

may or may not be wellllll dead by this point. (she would have to be immortal to still be around.)

Total War is great, but it does not care when things happened in the lore.

I mean, they have whole groups of them on tabletop.

constering the only real difference between the top two is the ETC action.

[X] PLAN: Chaos makes Taal feel peeved!

also, supporting the questing knight initiative.
[X] Plan: Fog Path to Success (A Damsel and Questing Knight, Rune smiths)
[X] PLAN: Escape Cavalry
[X] PLAN: Chaos makes Taal feel peeved! (A Damsel and her knight's version)

Not the only difference, actually. One does Pall of Darkness, whole the other starts on the Branalhune sword style.

Hey, I can't recall; was the betrayal of Horseman a thing in the quest's timeline? Our timeline started past the point he betrayed the Empire in the original timeline, but I also vaguely recall BoneyM saying that they had to roll a will save to stop themselves from making him genuinely good and helpful and stuff.

We have no idea of what's up with Van Horstmann.

Here's the WoQM:
Somewhere out there might be a Van Horstmann, but he has no greater a chance of turning out to be a traitor than any other wizard.
Also keep in mind that at some point in the not-so-distant future I'm going to have to roll a will check to keep van Horstmann from being entirely loyal to the Empire and an overall charming and helpful person just to fuck with the thread, and that's going to have a really high DC.
I am fully expecting that if we recruit Light Wizards he will show up so that Boney can screw with us.

Hmm, that's what I remembered too. But the quest started 2470, and the Betrayal of Horseman was 2457, so starting then implies it should have already occurred.

Maybe the date was extended to make his ascension to Patriarch physically possible? He had a progression rate faster than an RPG character who never took time skips, and toning that down would be perfectly reasonable.
