Hear Ye, Hear Ye, a new law has been declared by our great King Belegar. None within Karak Eight Peaks may swear the oath of the slayer until they have engaged the court wizard in a duel to the death. Those who slay her may continue and swear the oath, but those who die in the attempt will be assigned alternative forms of penance for their dishonor!
You do understand that our successor will curse our name, right?

There are several points where I was going to object on account of this being dumb, until I remembered the seed. We die? The seed. They die? The seed. Any crippling injuries? The seed.

I just don't think we're allowed to prohibit slayer oaths like that.
You do understand that our successor will curse our name, right?
Enough to come back in time to kill us? :V

Post-K8P we're either gonna be magical enough to be an elf advisor, GREAT DEEDed enough to join our new BFF at the Emperor's side as the court wizard proper, or we're gonna end up making a giant fursuit and taking over the council of thirteen.

I have weaponized the Hellfire of another race's Hell.
Kragg helped.

Needs to network more. Half the Wizards in the room could have told her she didn't meet the Rep requirements.

Least wizardly Wizard in K8P.

…isn't Mors currently occupying the ruins of Moulder? Rather impressive that she managed a looting spree.

Anything beyond monetary wealth, which I as a Grey Wizard am immune to the allure of?
Which I as an already rich person don't worry about.

one of the wolf-rat pups sitting on his shoulder and grooming his hair
Opposable thumbs for the win.

Still stalled on the damn ratling gun

the ooze we found. It can digest just about anything organic and turn it into... well, more of itself. We're feeding it to some of the cattle and they seem to like it okay, we're up to three months without ill effects at half their diet."
The Skaven have edible Green Goo. They have the food equivalent of freaking tiberium!
...and now we have it as well.

Will be a long while before people are willing to try it. Longer for the Dwarfs. Shorter for the Halflings.

"Loti?"
"Lotuses,"
"Loti,"
"Old Reikspiel root, so it plurazlies as loti,"
Yet more evidence the Wizards = Nerds.

You'd made a little key enchanted with Dispel
We enchanted our third second thing. Yay.

we do need to sit down with Hubert next social turn and have a talk.

there is a difference between not being good at magic, magic not being your main focus, and trying to avoid learning magic because you wanted to be a knight instead.

you are being paid to be a wizard in K8P while you learn magic, pay off your student loans and get ready for your exam. if you want to play knight do it on someone else's coin and time. preferably after your exam, what you do then is your prerogative.

I want to be nice, but he doesn't need nice, he needs a kick up the ass.

He's not, though. The Duckling Club aren't our employees.

@BoneyM Mechanics question, if you're still up: do our books on Ulgu provide a bonus to learning spells at home that stacks with our Learning/Tower of Dusk and Dawn?

So rangers and fieldwardens have devastating poison as part of their standard arsenal. Excellent job, Panoramia. Now, either go powercreep or learn what's the deal with the goblin shrooms. You have a name to live up to!
Kinda reminds me; weren't the Jades one of the orders who adapted Mathilde's Mythical Matrix for their own wind? Wonder if Panoramia knows the spell or would be interested in learning it, and/or she's aware who it''s from.

We need to tell him that if we don't see him drop a friggin meteor on some greenskins at some point before K8P is fully reclaimed we are personally going to stand over his bed at night and watch him sleep.

They tried to adopt it but it ended up not working out. They know it's possible now but they have a long road building the spell from the ground up.

I think the theory/hope/belief is the Ratling isn't very Warp-stoney, but yeah- quite a weakening in OpSec..

I can see Titus' next Great Pie Disaster already.

I'm not talking about our coin, I'm talking about the Kings coin.

which, in this case, makes his behaviour worse.
He's not, though. You don't get paid by Belegar just for Being A Wizard In K8P. They're under our jurisdiction, but Belegar doesn't give them a stipend. He's here Journeying. What he does on his Journey is his prerogative.

So gambler next turn or deciever? Deciever would be invaluable for Skaven interrogation, while gambler could reduce the uncertainty on tower improvements or learning invisibility. Can't see a use case for the other 2 faces...

... Since it's fairly important, should we just bite the bullet and pay the favor fee to get a private invisibility tutor to K8P? Can we do that?

"I... what?"

"You can fight, correct?" the dwarf repeated patiently, as if speaking to a particularly dense beardling.

"Well, yes, to an extent," Matthias stammered as they walked through the tunnel, holding on desperately to the wizardly tradition of at least seeming to be all-knowing. He wracked his memories; his predecessors' notes were quite thorough, but with only one week on the job and so many dwarven cultural mores that demanded his attention (namely how to avoid a good grudgin'), his knowledge was still patchy.

"Good." The dwarf pushed open the door. Matthias' eyes bugged out as he came face to face with what seemed to be a veritable throng of dwarves of all ages and walks of life. The only thing they held in common was the too-familiar expression of stubborn despair locked onto their faces.

Also, they were all very much armed and armored. It was hardly comforting that most of them clearly weren't warriors, not with how they'd eagerly lined up in single file.

"Well? What are you waiting for, lads?" The dwarf said, slapping the Grey Wizard on the back before doing the same to the first person in line. Too late, Matthias remembered the custom signed into law by a certain king, spurred into existence by a certain Grey Wizard. "Now get to it. Let's see if we'll be seeing the first crop of Slayers out of Karak Eight Peaks in years."

"Oh, no," Matthias whispered hoarsely, frantically weaving magical armor around himself. As the first dwarf in line advanced on him, axe at the ready, the wizard mentally unleashed a slew of curses upon the Weber name, and wondered how hard it would be to travel back in time...

Yes, it's a little listy. The primary purpose of Duckling Club is as a response to the thread's desire for six additional characters to be kept 'live' with their tasks and training and improvements kept on-screen. It's a fair chunk of extra work and it won't always come with a side of quality character moments, because it's not subject to the same filtering process that causes other possible social actions to be vetoed if I can't think of something good.

A possible solution (and believe me, I know that it's easier said than done) is to just increase the interaction between them without using Mathilde as a middle(wo)man for every other sentence.

Actually, the little tidbit where they are discussing the proper plural term for lotus is excellent in that regard, more of that would be wonderful.

Also, I would like to point out that I am enjoying the quest immensely, and if some of my critiques feel nitpicky, it's because I have an extremely high opinion on your writing ability and I because I hope that my criticisment proves constructive and helps you in your future writing.

You are doing a sterling job, and we might not be telling you that enough.

I am deeply grateful that you are writing this quest.

Why are people voting for Finding the Mines?

It spends 2 of our personal Dwarf Favor to get a +1 bonus that we can get next turn for free. Why?

This:
[X] [LIBRARY] Plan no favour mines

Is exactly the same, but costs a mere 50 gc out of our pocket (as opposed to a hundred), and zero favors (as opposed to 2), at the cost of "just" getting the second highest level of rarity on the Skaven books, aka missing but a humble +1.

[X] [TOWER] Complete

The actual threats we face are underground within the Karak, where our gyrocopters/cannon/superweapon can't get them. Although even with the tower 'fully finished' I'd be very reluctant to decrease the surface defenses by a lot- there are just too many ways for our defense to be broken if the tower is the only real bulwark.

[] [LIBRARY] Plan: Finding the Mines

Edit: convinced not worth it.

-[ Skaven: Dwarven Esoteric
-[ Karaz Ankor: Imperial Esoteric, Bretonnian Extensive

[X] [DWARF] No purchase.

[X] [COLLEGE] No purchase.

[X] [PURCHASE] No purchase.

If people genuinely feel their children can survive and prosper they'll raise plenty more than the notional average.

This is partially true (we've seen the reverse on the real world) but I'm not sure how much it applies to dwarves, given its a socio-cultural arguements and we know little to nothing of dwarven families and child rearing.

A Burning Vengence Item. :V (Not entirely a joke, I still think it would be useful for spoiling operations against the other peaks. It would cost College Favour though)

I'm coming around to the burning vengeance item, though if skimp and make it a one-shot. If we can get the Eshin and Skyre expeditionary forces fighting, we'd have reality close enough to leverage into tell our prisoner that one of the two joined up with mor. This would let us use him for info while allowing him to think he was still acting in the best interests of the council of 13 by helping us destroy one of them. Notably, it'll be better to have them actually fighting than lie about them fighting, because reporting conflicts and aftermaths that actually happened is going to be much, much easier than trying to game out what the skaven would do well enough to fool him.

You know how quickly they all bounce back given space and time. The only real way to deal with the problem in a permanent manner is to take the space they need to do so.

They don't bounce back though, that's the fundemental problem. Birth ratios suggest fertility is barely meeting replacement under best case scenarios. Something else needs to change.

I wonder if we can use runes or magic to make dwarfed women more fertile

Alternatively, use them to nudge birth ratios to more women. Id much prefer pushing dwarves to be more like humans than more like skaven.

Crafting something that is as good as possible is the dwarf way.

Which is, as we've seen, a path to grim downward spirals. Im seeing this as a negative, not a positive, given that it takes priority from underground defenses where the actual threats are. Good enough is just that. Enough.

so, low key, but this is big. we might have just stole one of the big reasons the skaven don't starve, and it seems to be self replicating. if we can scale this, and if there is not a kill plague already made, we might be able to massivly increase the amount of food available to dwarvs and humans. Especially if carnivores can eat this ooze.

Assume that the kill-plaugue is released, it'll hurt them WAY more than it'll hurt us. Win-win. :)

So, last thought on dwarf populations: we already have a book covering one solution: we know chaos dwarves have restored a population at least as late as the Western dwarves twice in the OOC timeline, from a very small base. Therefore, if the difference is biological, we'll find out in the skaven anatomy book. If there isn't anything there, then cultural approaches are much more likely to succeed.

Basically women are the bottleneck here- it really doesn't matter in the end of you lose 4/5 of all men to war as long as polyandry is culturally acceptable (yes, per WoG) but only having one in four live births contribute to the next generation is crippling. It would lead to the actual pattern we see too: slow grinding attrition that can last for centuries but does not meaningfully impact dwarf army numbers, combined with massive irrecoverable population drops when Karags fall and civilians get massacred. More babies overall would help, but a shift to 2-1 instead of 3-1 male/female births would allow compounding forward as the portion of the population which reproduces gets larger.

Tl;dr- for dwarf silver age, they need more daughters.

He's not being paid by us.

Frankly I don't know where the Ducklings get their living expenses.* One of the things I expected from Mage Club was less reports and more job exchange. That and signing off on spell scrolls like we did for the Ambers when we needed someone to talk to the We.

*I can guess that Adela and Hubert have fairly wealthy families and Gretel's been adventuring this season but I don't know what she did last year.

I agree with the sentiment, but is he actually being paid?
