There is only one way to communicate my feelings on learning of Sombra. After a rousing rendition of the "Oh Shit" song, I felt this:

I'm now going to go thank Discord for being kind enough to put mountains in between us and Sombra.

I officially petition the QM for one of our military actions(or economic actions, or something) to be building a string of border forts that block the passes.

Little late for that hes already crossing the mountains and is coming for us.

That's not what I got from the interlude. Just that Sombra's gearing up. There's still a bit of time. Nonetheless, I acknowledge the point, and realistically the forts would only be completed after the initial repelling of his armies.

Still, we have chokepoints. Let's use them. I don't want UniSauron and his mind-controlled hordes ravaging our lands.

i'm...pretty sure there is literally nothing we could do to harm him if he just turns into his big dark cloud form...soooooo....that's gonna be an issue...on the other hand, i'm pretty sure that if we could cut off his head before he does the smoke thing he would still die, so, at least some hope if he decides to be dumb?
I'm pretty sure his Shadow State was because he was sealed that way

"You were tempted to merely dismiss their reports as the ravings of half-starved lunatics. But the unseasonable frost slowly creeping over the mountains into your southern provinces tells you otherwise, as does the massive, unnatural blizzard originating from the South, slowly but inexorably making its way north towards the Empire. Almost as if it was...walking towards you.

Discovered "Crystal Empire".
Invasion Imminent."

This part leads me to believe that hes already on the march even if hes not that fact is now there a huge blizzard on the border which would make any kind of construction nearly impossible at this point.

Blast Mining: Archimedes' fire powder, while little more than a noise maker in small amounts, is a potent explosive in large doses. A few miners have expressed interest in using it to blast their way through solid rock that can't be easily excavated. It's risky, but the rewards make it worth consideration. Cost: 200. Time: One Year. Reward: Increased Mining income. Chance of Success: 70%

So this might be one of the stewardship, not military or a learning, action from turn 10, but it cannot be all that difficult to weaponize against Sombre.

He's marching towards us with a giant blizzard he's driving. Therefore the correct response is not to stand in his direct path but try to circle around and find some kind of weakness or weapon to use against him.

So, definitely not enough time for anything other than minor fortifications. So border forts would be for the next time around.

Right now what should happen this turn is espionage into his castle to try to find a weakness as well as cannons and other military techs as well as calling up the mountain militia we formed.

In cannon being stronger than Celestia is not the impossible achievement here wasn't she basically a God?
"Basically a god" means nothing. Those can be omnipotent or weaker than babies.

Celestia has the telekinetic strength to move the Sun (confirmed by a writer to be identical to our own in her vision) at Mach 5000. That's an energy output of a solar system buster. Chrysalis pushed that back and Celestia survived the impact. Celestia wasn't confident enough to fight Sombra without Luna and the two working together failed their mission to stop Sombra.
Go for the horn, it's a Unicorns greatest strength and most obvious weakness.

HAHAHAHA, we live in a world with monsters like Sombra and you want PHEWER soldiers between them and our people. You are either very funny or so utterly terrified you've gone completely mad!

Now my lore is a little rusty but isn't Sombra's mist form a result of being sealed away for a millennia?[/QUOTE

Sombra was turned to mist when the alicorns blasted him in what was implied to be an attempted kill. It just made him stronger.

Note: Sombra is paranoid and a trap expert. He also uses barding that mind controls the wearer into fighting for him. According to the comics, he is a shadow pony. Also, he was allowed in to the Crystal Empire before revealing his nature He also seems to be an expert in emotions. He doesn't talk much and likes stairs. Likely excellent with architecture.

(On Caribou: Lauren Faust intended to make them Viking expires. So, I do the same and throw in some flying and Santa's elves flavour)

so this is a thing, right what can we do here?

Our choices will be greatly effected by how much time we have to prep for the invasion. if imminent means 1-2 turns then that removes alot of our options. the ones i could see us having in that time frame are.

1. recruit for army- i.e. try and drown him in numbers.

2. reach out to the yaks- having them on our side would be an incredible boon, if we can convince them that is.

3. scouting- dangerous as sombra seems to know where people are ala sauron when in his empire but might be useful

if we have 2+ turns

1-3 still good

4. crash build cannons- hit hard and have long range,

5. crash build fire weapons- not as good as cannon as they lack range, fire might prove effective though

6. build border defenses- slow sombra down

All in all i think we have a chance of coming out of this alive. we might not necessarly have the power to outright kill him but all we really need to do is make fighting us more difficult than its worth and are wasting his time. if anything actually killing him should be far harder than defeating him as he can just run away and hole up in evil fortress. something that would be extremely difficult to take even with guns, bombs, and cannon.

Well on the Brightside our claims about needing to unify in the face of unknown threats are suddenly absolutely proven! If we win this the empire staying unified should basically be guaranteed.

It also works, if we successfully repel them, as pressure and evidence of our ability. It's easier to integrate people who need what we provide than people on equal footing.

Well atleast we know the rolls are trying to make a story discord came (who I can argue is more powerful then Sombra) and left but made everything go crazy and now we unified the griffons and discovered the yaks and now we we have a HUGE threat really convienent

Isn't it great we didn't spend 1000 gold on those fortifications against the yaks, those would have been a great investment. Ok no time for snark, how to defeat Sombra without having a lavender magical prodigy and 6 pieces of a Deus Ex Machina, or two immortal pony goddesses. Well doing an offensive strategy is suicide, we barely even got to know about Sombra without losing most griffons. I see a few possible strategies here.

1. Diplomacy: Sombra obviously wants something, and from the show we know what that is... crystals. There is a chance we could pay tribute for a while and buy us the necessary time to build up or forge relations with others to mount a defense. I know it sucks but it is an option to consider. We do need to clarify if Crystals that he wants are the same as the Gems the Diamond Dogs want, if they are different we are fine, if the same... well GG guys GG.

2. Defense on front: We construct a wide array of fortresses along the Peregrine Mountains with Ballistas troops, cannons, and perhaps even connected via tunnels underground. Personally I think this plan is doomed to fail, cause you know Magic

3. Defense in depth: We know we can't hold the line at the Peregrine Mountains, so we mobilize the knights and army to build supply depots and weapon stockpiles between Griffonstone and the Peregrine mountains, have the knights and army train as many people as they can, make guerrilla engagements and the like... Of course against Magical mist this might be moot too

4. Subterranean Highways and Bunkers: Yes very Fallouty but the Diamond Dogs are phenomenal Diggers, Building and and excavating the large stockpiles of food and weapons needed? Having a secret way of getting between two cities without being spotted over land

5. Find Magical weapons: Yeah this is a gamble but we need SOMETHING

IN terms of possible opportunity avenues I don't think we have considered

Finding Brouchard's old Spymaster and offering whatever they want for the treasury to defend our nation. All the more terrible option is they already joined Sombra

Making first Contact with Neighpon and hope to hell there is some proof to those Divine Dragons for the sake of us all.

Foment dissent in the Crystal Empire this assumes there IS one, but keeping him at bay may be an option to consider.

I also however found some good news.

Sombra is possibly the only magical being there. I found a list on MLP of all Crystal Ponies, there is not many unicorn crystal ponys at all ... besides Sombra, none in the background of the original residents of the Crystal Empire, and most of the ones we do see seem to have been living in Equestria before Sombra's return so they are immigrants. In that same vein... there seem to be very very few or possibly no Pegasi Crystal Ponies, as most of the "crystal ponies" on the list HERE are Royal Guard Pegasi, and they only appeared after Cadence was on the throne. Of course the production team may have just been reusing old ponies to put into crowd scenes. and absence of pre-Cadence crystal unicorns or pegasi doesn't mean they don't exist.

The last two I normally wouldn't bring up but I figure it's important to show that Sombra is not some impossible enemy, he has flaws he has deficiencies, and one obvious one I see is that he likely can't be everywhere. Leaving the Crystal Palace his throne of power and the Crystal Heart is probably not easy for him. Attacking Sombra is suicide, Defending against him, as he effectively has one hand tied behind his back? Doable and much easier. The biggest mistake we could make is fighting him head on potentially

I don't think anybody is arguing discord as anything other than the strongest there is.

Seriously though, mlp is a crazy deathworld. I know I didn't say it in the most somber way but I really am serious when I say that we ought to seek apotheosis, this kid is just the start. Hells, I was even serious when I said CHIM should be on the table, depending on author interpretation that level of feat might be necessary.

That said we can and will defeat this best as is, it's just a matter of how and at what cost.

Yes but we need a ability to fight him of if we defend don't know if are weapons are even capable of harming him since he can become a mist and we have no magic to do anything for all we know he will just blast open a hole in the mountain or must mist himself over it

Any suggestions? Throwing men at him won't work and I doubt we are even physically capable of harming him this ain't like the dynasty of alcoholism we're we have dues ex machina magic

There is the small possibility of meeting Neighpon and asking them for aid in this fight in return for substantial amounts of resources, but odds are they likely wont help, the yaks are a possibility but i dont know what they could really do here to help us other then throwing more bodies at him.

Though the yaks could have some form of magic we dont know about.

Oh yes, I'm fully aware we are grasping at straws here.

The only advantage we have is the fact that he is only one being he has no army while I have been saying throwing men at him won't work it might just be better if we do a Stalin and throw so much that we can stall him till we find a solution as terrible as it is.

I forget dident we ask before if the diamond dogs have magic and we got a maybe maybe not? If we want we could try to search for any more info on that. Yes I know this is grasping as straws! Magic is really the only thing I can think of and we don't have it and the yaks don't as far as we know.

Guy's isn't Sombra's Mist form the result of Celestia and Luna trying to kill him but only succeeding in destroying his body? If that's the case he should still be in his physical form.
