The flag of the Crystal Protectorate. Adopted a few years after the Protectorate was officially formed it incorporated elements of the Gryphus Imperial Flag. As said by Ivory Rook at the debut of the flag the Three Black Bands represent the rememberance of the sacrifices made by thousands of Griffons... against an apocalyptic foe... and to save a peoples under tyranny. It did unknowingly inspire how flags would be designed for future protectorates.

At least here's my first pass on it.
Dude, that looks so freaking good!!

@Firebringer2077, I understand that, since it's a Crystal Protectorate, it has a merger-flag, but should you really have two shades of the same color on a flag?

it was a first pass and I've moved past that, I'm experimenting with some designs. The problem is that we are also applying modern vexillogical standards on top of the pastel happy MLP color palette, and also contending with the historical mindset inverse more akin to the 18th century rather than the 21st. Griffon Nationalism itself is a fairly recent concept with Griffonia, Aquilea, and Wingbardy's medieval traditions still within living memory. Hence why the early empire was just a stitched together of the three banners. It was only in the aftermath of the Sombra War, that the modern Gryphus Empire flag was raised and flown. Once we start getting into the more 1930s or 1940s tech levels I might do another Gryphus Empire flag. I'm also including a few vexillogical mistakes intentionally to show that the Gryphons themselves are still learning how to make their own flags too.

Right now I favor the fourth design as it creates a sort of flag symbology for the Griffons. The number of Black Bands indicate how much was sacrificed to ensure the safety of this region. Hard to pass the Crystal Protectorate for three bands (Sombra, Big War, Liberation of Slaves) I'd argue Maretonia if it gets a similar arrangment would only warrant 2 bands (Big War, Liberation of Slaves). Kestrella Regional Flag would only have one. But I don't like putting Purple on flags (since Purple Dye was so rare in our world), but I guess I could get around it by saying certain magical amalgamations of crystal can be ground down into purple dye.

It looks like purple was so expensive because the dye came from some specific sea snail species and required a lot of work and a lot of snails to make. And for Europe it also had to be imported since it came from far away, making it even more expensive.

So maybe just say that Gryphus has a plant/animal that produces purple dye a lot easier. Maybe manticore bones or troll skin is used.

The real problem there is the ingredients, but fair enough.
Maybe we can find a way to invent synthetic dragon scales or something.
eh, dragon scales should be some of the most expensive/effective items, and I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up in a trade agreement with the dragon lands, buying their "shedded" scales, for example.

Also some of the lower-tier ingredients are supposed to be plants, and there's really no reason we shouldn't be able to mass-cultivate them, possibly with earth-pony assistance.

If you guys really want to argue flag vexillology rather than just doing whatever looks cool (as I would), then I feel it is important OTL flag vexillology only began emerging around the Enlightenment. Monarchist countries like the Empire would more typically use coat-of-arms* as flags rather than proper nation flags, so it is fine to not use "proper" flag design.

*Mind you, some modern nation flags still use coat-of-arms that have just become so heavily associated with the nation in question that it's transcended its original assocition.

More Flag Designs
Since this seems to bring with it some discussion... Here we go

The Empire of Neighpon, is an ancient nation ruled by Dragons... and as such does not follow the rules of modern flag protocol. The flag is more a banner frequently seen hanging in the Imperial Palace, and shows the central symbol of the Ancient Dragons that ruled over Neighpon: The Crimson Chrysanthemum. Even Emperor Koryu who has tried to adopt some "Griffonization" policies, wears the necklace of the Ancient Dragons, intended for their speaker. The Fivefold Chrysantemum Amulets... Koryu never had the heart to tell Emperor Garrick that the Amulets gave him the power to speak perfect Gryphonese on their first meeting. The banner of Neighpon is hung vertically, and barring any major political schisms it is unlikely to change anytime soon.

The flag of the most well known Dog inhabited region of the Empire if only known for it's proximity to Gryphus Peak. Diamondtown is without a doubt one of the largest Dog settlements in the Empire, it is also remarkable for being founded during the reign of Discord, after Houndstooth was lost.

The Diamond Dogs rarely talk about their history... Among the scattered tales is of the old Dog Nation of Houndstooth, which existed prior to Discord. In one version of the tale the Dogs ignored Discord for quite some time, the Hounds of Gold made a fortune selling wares to the ones trying to survive on the surface, and it was thought they escaped Discord's notice... They hadn't. The Fall of Houndstooth, was the collapse of the major tunnel network and the separation of the tribes. The Dogs of the Sea fled to the tunnels far under the sea. Staying warm in caverns while Discord arranged continents, and eventually they were under what was now the Emerald Isles (so named because of all the Emeralds they found.) Yet... Discord wasn't gone. One of his last cruel jokes was to flood the tunnels again, and the Emerald Dogs only survived the Deluge thanks to grabbing to Stalagtites hanging from the ceiling of the cavern. If it was just a water flood that would be one thing... it wasn't though. Discord flooded the caverns with Chocolate Milk, quite toxic to Dogkind. It is why their flag shows dogs of all types clinging to the top of their flag... with the toxic fluis swirls below...

Why is the chocolate milk blue... well I'm glad you asked. It is TOTALLY not because the flagmaker thought of the Chocolate Milk angle while writing this and because Discord turned Chocolate Milk blue that day... Yep...

Omake: Imperial City of Gryphusberg
Hey it's that thing I mentioned 500 years ago

Entry: Imperial City of Gryphusberg, from Shining Frost's Un-Abridged Guide to the Cities of the World, [1] published 30 AD

Gryphusberg or Gryphus Peak is the capital and largest city of the Empire of Gryphus. Situated in the southeast of the country, between the Bergträne River and the mountain that lends its name to the city, Gryphusberg is a thriving hub of industry, commerce, transportation, art, science, and administration.

History

Gryphusberg formerly served as the capital of the post-Imperial Kingdom of Griffonia, ruled by the Blackfeather (Schwarzenfeder) dynasty for most of Discord's reign. During the Age of Chaos, Gryphusberg was, like most settlements, a relatively small affair, beset on all sides by an ever-shifting and nonsensical landscape filled with deadly beasts. It is believed that the layout of the city was forcibly changed by Discord's actions at least three times over a three-hundred-year period. The wider Griffonian kingdom, meanwhile, was a kingdom in name only, as few messengers and soldiers could actually reach the locations of the king's nominal vassals on the other side of the chaotic wilds. Nevertheless, due to its advantageous location (most of the time…), Gryphusberg became a local trade hub for the Herzland region.

One of those who frequented the markets of Gryphusberg was Garrick Goldenfeather, a young itinerant merchant whose reputation for reliable and relatively fast deliveries had, until the end of Discord's reign, been his only claim to fame. However, when the last Blackfeather king of Griffonia, Gerhard III, died of alcohol poisoning acquired during the raucous celebrations of Discord's fall, the scribes of the Mountain Palace (Bergpalast), his residence, were forced to locate a distant relative of their liege to continue the succession. The only one they could find was Garrick Goldenfeather, the only scion of a cadet line of the Blackfeathers descended from the bastard son of King Dietrich II. Thus, the future Emperor of Gryphus took the throne, and Gryphusberg's future was forever changed.

In the thirty years since the ascension of Garrick (called the Golden, or even the Great, by his people), Gryphusberg has increased in size fourfold from what it was in the Discordian. The Bergpalast has been expanded to cover much of the eastern flank of the Peak on whose slopes it sits, becoming a truly imperial edifice. The city itself has grown so large that it has begun to merge with the nearby port of Aukland, providing the capital with direct sea access, and linking it and its merchant emperor even more closely to the burgeoning international trade networks.

In 7 AD, as part of the Great Reorganization of the realms of Gryphus for integration into the Empire, Gryphusberg was designated the Imperial City, becoming its own administrative unit, separate from the rest of Griffonia, and subject to its own laws.

Demographics and Culture

Owing to its status as the best-connected and populous city in Gryphus, Gryphusberg is also the most diverse city in the Empire, a far cry from the overwhelming griffon majority that it possessed upon Garrick's ascension. Now, griffons make up only a bare majority of the population of 350,000, with the rest being members of other species.

The earliest and largest minority population in Gryphusberg is that of the diamond dogs (diamanthunde), who first moved en masse to the city after the Pacts of the Packs were made. Over 75,000 diamond dogs currently live in and under--especially under--Gryphusberg. There are so many, in fact, that they have quite literally carved out an entire quarter of the city for themselves: the undercity (unterstadt) of Grand Diamondtown (Große Diamantenstadt), so named to distinguish it from the other Diamondtowns in cities across the Empire. This massive network of natural and artificial tunnels and caverns has increased the living space in Gryphusberg by over a third, and also boosts the local economy through the mining of industrial metals like copper, tin, and iron, and the farming of numerous species of edible mushrooms. The unterstadt is, contrary to the beliefs of certain political figures, just as clean on average as the city above, if not moreso, given the constant effort to reinforce walls, ram loose dirt into place, and fix any potential structural weaknesses that could cause a dangerous collapse. In recent years, the area has become famous for its restaurant scene, with establishments such as Big Mama's Dining Den reportedly being visited even by royalty. Große Diamantenstadt even plays an important role in the Imperial City's defenses, with several large civilian emergency shelters and military outposts and supply caches situated throughout the unterstadt.

The second-largest minority are the crystal ponies (kristallpferden), many of whom migrated north for economic opportunities during the days of reconstruction after the Winterkrieg, though just as many came for other reasons as well. They live in all areas of Gryphusberg, but tend to cluster around the southern fork of the Bergträne that runs through the city. The area is known as the Ruby Ford, after an early community leader of the crystal ponies in the city, Ruby Dazzle, who helped organize the first settlements of her people along the Bergträne and oversaw the construction of three of the Ford's famous Gembridges. The bridges are unique in their construction; they were grown from relatively small seed crystals with powerful crystallomancy, the energy for which was provided by dozens of crystal ponies who volunteered for the projects. So far, there are bridges made of diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire, and most recently, fire opal. Plans have been made for at least three more bridges, made of more exotic stones--tourmaline, purpurite, [2] and ammolite have been suggested.

Various Neighponjin species live in the Downriver district, closest to Aukland, which has a larger population. Like the diamond dogs, the Neighponjin have brought their distinct architectural style to the city, and many of the houses in the Downriver district would not be out of place in Kyoto. Also like the diamond dogs, they have become famous for their cuisine, which has spread well beyond the lower Bergträne area. Recently, it was announced that the crystalmancers of Ruby Ford were being contracted to construct another Gembridge in Downriver, this time out of high-quality Neighponjin jade.

In matters of religion, Gryphusberg has become the largest center of faith in the Empire, in addition to its other leading roles. A shrine to the Crystal Heart, parish church of the Lady of the Lake, and yak runestone are all present near the city center, and the Imperial Cult has announced plans to construct a Cathedral of the Savior-Emperor near the Bergpalast. On a smaller scale, many residents have home-shrines to their ancestors or to Neighponjin kami in their houses or the houses of important community members.

Industry

Gryphusberg has long been the beating heart of the Imperial Industrial Revolution, even before the invention of the Archimedean steam engine. The location of the city between two forks of the Bergträne allowed mills and early factories to spring up once machine tools became commonplace, using hydraulic power to drive their machinery. In addition, the river provided a convenient avenue for shipping the finished products to the great markets of Aukland. Now, the river provides a constant source of water for the steam engines as well. Many of the Empire's largest factories make their home in the Imperial City, drawing thousands of workers from across Gryphus, Kristalland, and beyond.

To keep the managers and owners of the city's factories honest, in recent years, many laborers have begun organizing into leagues or guilds, which represent different sectors of the workforce in negotiations with the bosses. They have scored several notable victories in their quest to ensure that no working being is underpaid, overworked, or unsafe, to the consternation of some aristocratic voices.

Education

Gryphusberg is home to the largest concentration of primary and secondary schools in the Empire; unusually, most of these schools are regulated by a single authority, the Capital Education Bureau founded by a minor imperial edict in 18. Thus far, only a few cities and towns have adopted this model, but it seems to work well for the Imperial City, according to polls.

For higher education, citizens have two main options: the Imperial University of Gryphusberg (Imperatorliche Universität Gryphusberg) and the Imperial Gryphusian Officers' Academy (Gryphusisches Imperatorliche Offiziersakademie) attached to the larger War Academy. IUG, as the civilian institution is known, is well known as the site of the main workshop of Chief Researcher Archimedes and Vice Chief Researcher Genevieve Talonuelli, from which countless revolutionary inventions have been birthed. This alone attracts thousands of students each year, eager to learn from the ones considered the finest minds in the Empire. GIO, the military academy, attracts more warlike students, and a surprising number of diamond dogs. In addition, a few dozen foreign officer candidates, mostly Neighponjin and Yakyakistani, have graduated from its halls, bringing the Gryphusian way of war back to their homelands and adding to their nations' strategic annals. The two academies have, as of late, developed a fierce talonball rivalry, which has led to many a drunken brawl between their students.

Transportation

It is often said that the best way to get around Gryphusberg is on the river. The Bergträne has been the city's lifeblood for centuries, enabling trade and civil traffic alike and allowing thousands to traverse the urban landscape quickly and relatively easily. Gondolas, barges, skiffs, and more ply the twin forks, passing under historic bridges such as the aforementioned Gembridges of Ruby Ford and the Königsbrücke of the northern city, built by King Augustus ("Gusti") the Grey during Discord's reign. The recent publication of Archimedes' nautical steam engine design promises to breathe new life into the already expansive river travel industry.

On land, the central part of the city is built on a grid, a product of the ancient First Empire's prowess in city planning. Beyond this core, however, the streets can be somewhat chaotic, and maps are usually necessary for non-natives. The recent construction of a city railroad in Gryphusberg has helped alleviate some of the street traffic, and enabled rapid transport between the capital and other cities, such as Kristallstadt.

[1] In contrast to the far shorter work that is Twinkle Sprinkle's Abridged Guide to the Cities of the World, written by Frost's wife. If you get that reference, yey

[2] Purpurite, from the Herzlandisch/German "purpur," meaning purple, is tanzanite. I changed the name because Tanzania doesn't exist in this world, and decided to go with a simple descriptive name.

good as always, but I wanted to point out a mistake here: We still have NOT taken the immigration actions, so we actually should not have many neighponians or yaks in our country.

We probably only have the magic advisors, and a few ambassadors with their servants and families, basically.

I would think that at least some Neighponjin would migrate to the Empire, considering how close we are relations wise, and they'd be attracted to the capital due to its economic importance. There'd be more in Aukland and other ports, I bet.

As for yaks, there's enough of them and the followers of their shamanism to warrant a famous carver coming to the capital and erecting a runestone there, as seen in a prior update.

I suppose we could finally work on immigration after the war.
oh, sure. Opening it to Maretonians too might help, and it's not unusual for people from poor countries to go into richer ones to send money home.

And for at least a turn or two after the war (if not more) Maretonia will be a very poor country. It will take them time and investments to catch up, and if somehow we don't manage to get them as a protectorate/to annex them it will be even harder for them, as they'll really get much less funding.

I think we should encourage immigration eventually. Especially from neighpon, they would really help cover our weaknesses.

we don't really have any weaknesses, really, except maybe a lack of more versatile magic. Still our technology covers most of those holes, and we DO have some potentially very useful bits of magic, though they're a bit niche in application.

We have some basic runes (young field, still in development), probably quite a few maretonian earth ponies for earth and farming related magic (we might want to, say, try to recruit them not only for conventional farming but also for growing rare/delicate herbal plants or runic materials), crystal ponies for crystallomancy (might be good for architecture, possibly to "grow" gemstones as runic materials and for jewelry and wherever else they can be useful (diamonds are sometime used in industry due to their hardness, for example)), and whatever the hippogryph have, once they start growing up...

...Maretonia can potentially cover the only two things we truly lack. Weather magic from pegasi, and the more "varied" unicorn magic, though unicorns seem to work on a "hero unit" system in canon, with most unicorns basically having tk and a couple of tricks (usually related to their talent), and maybe a small % of them actually having anything more impressive.

Who knows, maybe by studying unicorn spells we'll learn how to reproduce them through runes, or even how to adapt them so that they might be used by other races, maybe by creating something like magical wands/staffs to act as horns.

From Neighpon... well, if we get immigrants, we could get a few kitsune/tanuki for illusion magics, the Oni have superstrenght (so hard labour, mining, moving supplies, obviously as soldiers...) and the Qilin are firebenders, so maybe they could help in metallurgy/siderurgy, to save on fuel, same for most steam-engines...

Generally speaking, Weather Magic is probably the most useful of all of those we mostly lack. getting a few actual unicorn mages to cooperate with our magical schools would also help, but it's not quite as important.

Our lack of magical ability is mostly what I'm referring to. Our access to magic has been getting better but we're still not on par with most other nations in that area. Allowing immigrants from neighpon who have extremely useful arcane abilities like pyromancy and illusion magic would greatly improve that deficit. This would also improve relations with our greatest ally through increased interaction between our people's and theirs.

I honestly love these info omakes your writing, but I just wanted to ask, wouldn't Gryphus Peak have a Little Maretonia in it? I mean, its somewhat close to the southern border, so it would make sense to have even a small Maretonian enclave.

I honestly didn't think of that; I figured that we don't have more than a couple thousand immigrants/freedfolk from there, and that most of them were in Crystal City or thereabouts, since it's between the Empire proper and Maretonia

Its mentioned somewhere in the last few updates, but due to the civil war we've been getting a lot of maretonian refugees, who have been forming ethnic enclaves in our southern cities. The largest is in the Crystal City, yes, but if I remember correctly there should be a few in our other southern cities, which I think Gryphous Peak counts as.

Edit. Yeah it's in the turn 27 rumor mill.

I am sorry if this is a week after the last discussion, but if we explore the ocean more, there are equivalents to hawaii and the maori we could meet.

Geckos as a Hawaiian people are an option, since they very likely came to the island and with humans in our world. And the Hawaiian Crow is an important part of the culture.

The mo'o, which might be kin to dragons, do hide among lizards them and the fish pools of Hawaii. Most, but not all mo'o in stories are female, and I am sure it would be fun to see sone in disguise trying to get the attention of our strong, handsome sailors and soldiers.

I just trying to present things in a more respectful way, so I was thinking of important parts of Hawaiian culture that I am not an ignorant westerner about.

We have both Celestia and Luna at the peak of their power. No army is marching into Equestria without getting turned to ash by a solar flare or destroyed by a meteor strike. The Royal Guard is just there to handle the smaller threats the Sisters can't be bothered to deal with personally, like the Diamond Dogs and the Timberwolves. And a war against an outside threat would do a lot to unify the kingdom. We'd finally have an excuse to clamp down on the nobility.
