Omake: Imperial City of Gryphusberg
Hey it's that thing I mentioned 500 years ago

Entry: Imperial City of Gryphusberg, from Shining Frost's Un-Abridged Guide to the Cities of the World, [1] published 30 AD

Gryphusberg or Gryphus Peak is the capital and largest city of the Empire of Gryphus. Situated in the southeast of the country, between the Bergträne River and the mountain that lends its name to the city, Gryphusberg is a thriving hub of industry, commerce, transportation, art, science, and administration.

History

Gryphusberg formerly served as the capital of the post-Imperial Kingdom of Griffonia, ruled by the Blackfeather (Schwarzenfeder) dynasty for most of Discord's reign. During the Age of Chaos, Gryphusberg was, like most settlements, a relatively small affair, beset on all sides by an ever-shifting and nonsensical landscape filled with deadly beasts. It is believed that the layout of the city was forcibly changed by Discord's actions at least three times over a three-hundred-year period. The wider Griffonian kingdom, meanwhile, was a kingdom in name only, as few messengers and soldiers could actually reach the locations of the king's nominal vassals on the other side of the chaotic wilds. Nevertheless, due to its advantageous location (most of the time…), Gryphusberg became a local trade hub for the Herzland region.

One of those who frequented the markets of Gryphusberg was Garrick Goldenfeather, a young itinerant merchant whose reputation for reliable and relatively fast deliveries had, until the end of Discord's reign, been his only claim to fame. However, when the last Blackfeather king of Griffonia, Gerhard III, died of alcohol poisoning acquired during the raucous celebrations of Discord's fall, the scribes of the Mountain Palace (Bergpalast), his residence, were forced to locate a distant relative of their liege to continue the succession. The only one they could find was Garrick Goldenfeather, the only scion of a cadet line of the Blackfeathers descended from the bastard son of King Dietrich II. Thus, the future Emperor of Gryphus took the throne, and Gryphusberg's future was forever changed.

In the thirty years since the ascension of Garrick (called the Golden, or even the Great, by his people), Gryphusberg has increased in size fourfold from what it was in the Discordian. The Bergpalast has been expanded to cover much of the eastern flank of the Peak on whose slopes it sits, becoming a truly imperial edifice. The city itself has grown so large that it has begun to merge with the nearby port of Aukland, providing the capital with direct sea access, and linking it and its merchant emperor even more closely to the burgeoning international trade networks.

In 7 AD, as part of the Great Reorganization of the realms of Gryphus for integration into the Empire, Gryphusberg was designated the Imperial City, becoming its own administrative unit, separate from the rest of Griffonia, and subject to its own laws.

Demographics and Culture

Owing to its status as the best-connected and populous city in Gryphus, Gryphusberg is also the most diverse city in the Empire, a far cry from the overwhelming griffon majority that it possessed upon Garrick's ascension. Now, griffons make up only a bare majority of the population of 350,000, with the rest being members of other species.

The earliest and largest minority population in Gryphusberg is that of the diamond dogs (diamanthunde), who first moved en masse to the city after the Pacts of the Packs were made. Over 75,000 diamond dogs currently live in and under--especially under--Gryphusberg. There are so many, in fact, that they have quite literally carved out an entire quarter of the city for themselves: the undercity (unterstadt) of Grand Diamondtown (Große Diamantenstadt), so named to distinguish it from the other Diamondtowns in cities across the Empire. This massive network of natural and artificial tunnels and caverns has increased the living space in Gryphusberg by over a third, and also boosts the local economy through the mining of industrial metals like copper, tin, and iron, and the farming of numerous species of edible mushrooms. The unterstadt is, contrary to the beliefs of certain political figures, just as clean on average as the city above, if not moreso, given the constant effort to reinforce walls, ram loose dirt into place, and fix any potential structural weaknesses that could cause a dangerous collapse. In recent years, the area has become famous for its restaurant scene, with establishments such as Big Mama's Dining Den reportedly being visited even by royalty. Große Diamantenstadt even plays an important role in the Imperial City's defenses, with several large civilian emergency shelters and military outposts and supply caches situated throughout the unterstadt.

The second-largest minority are the crystal ponies (kristallpferden), many of whom migrated north for economic opportunities during the days of reconstruction after the Winterkrieg, though just as many came for other reasons as well. They live in all areas of Gryphusberg, but tend to cluster around the southern fork of the Bergträne that runs through the city. The area is known as the Ruby Ford, after an early community leader of the crystal ponies in the city, Ruby Dazzle, who helped organize the first settlements of her people along the Bergträne and oversaw the construction of three of the Ford's famous Gembridges. The bridges are unique in their construction; they were grown from relatively small seed crystals with powerful crystallomancy, the energy for which was provided by dozens of crystal ponies who volunteered for the projects. So far, there are bridges made of diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire, and most recently, fire opal. Plans have been made for at least three more bridges, made of more exotic stones--tourmaline, purpurite, [2] and ammolite have been suggested.

Various Neighponjin species live in the Downriver district, closest to Aukland, which has a larger population. Like the diamond dogs, the Neighponjin have brought their distinct architectural style to the city, and many of the houses in the Downriver district would not be out of place in Kyoto. Also like the diamond dogs, they have become famous for their cuisine, which has spread well beyond the lower Bergträne area. Recently, it was announced that the crystalmancers of Ruby Ford were being contracted to construct another Gembridge in Downriver, this time out of high-quality Neighponjin jade.

In matters of religion, Gryphusberg has become the largest center of faith in the Empire, in addition to its other leading roles. A shrine to the Crystal Heart, parish church of the Lady of the Lake, and yak runestone are all present near the city center, and the Imperial Cult has announced plans to construct a Cathedral of the Savior-Emperor near the Bergpalast. On a smaller scale, many residents have home-shrines to their ancestors or to Neighponjin kami in their houses or the houses of important community members.

Industry

Gryphusberg has long been the beating heart of the Imperial Industrial Revolution, even before the invention of the Archimedean steam engine. The location of the city between two forks of the Bergträne allowed mills and early factories to spring up once machine tools became commonplace, using hydraulic power to drive their machinery. In addition, the river provided a convenient avenue for shipping the finished products to the great markets of Aukland. Now, the river provides a constant source of water for the steam engines as well. Many of the Empire's largest factories make their home in the Imperial City, drawing thousands of workers from across Gryphus, Kristalland, and beyond.

To keep the managers and owners of the city's factories honest, in recent years, many laborers have begun organizing into leagues or guilds, which represent different sectors of the workforce in negotiations with the bosses. They have scored several notable victories in their quest to ensure that no working being is underpaid, overworked, or unsafe, to the consternation of some aristocratic voices.

Education

Gryphusberg is home to the largest concentration of primary and secondary schools in the Empire; unusually, most of these schools are regulated by a single authority, the Capital Education Bureau founded by a minor imperial edict in 18. Thus far, only a few cities and towns have adopted this model, but it seems to work well for the Imperial City, according to polls.

For higher education, citizens have two main options: the Imperial University of Gryphusberg (Imperatorliche Universität Gryphusberg) and the Imperial Gryphusian Officers' Academy (Gryphusisches Imperatorliche Offiziersakademie) attached to the larger War Academy. IUG, as the civilian institution is known, is well known as the site of the main workshop of Chief Researcher Archimedes and Vice Chief Researcher Genevieve Talonuelli, from which countless revolutionary inventions have been birthed. This alone attracts thousands of students each year, eager to learn from the ones considered the finest minds in the Empire. GIO, the military academy, attracts more warlike students, and a surprising number of diamond dogs. In addition, a few dozen foreign officer candidates, mostly Neighponjin and Yakyakistani, have graduated from its halls, bringing the Gryphusian way of war back to their homelands and adding to their nations' strategic annals. The two academies have, as of late, developed a fierce talonball rivalry, which has led to many a drunken brawl between their students.

Transportation

It is often said that the best way to get around Gryphusberg is on the river. The Bergträne has been the city's lifeblood for centuries, enabling trade and civil traffic alike and allowing thousands to traverse the urban landscape quickly and relatively easily. Gondolas, barges, skiffs, and more ply the twin forks, passing under historic bridges such as the aforementioned Gembridges of Ruby Ford and the Königsbrücke of the northern city, built by King Augustus ("Gusti") the Grey during Discord's reign. The recent publication of Archimedes' nautical steam engine design promises to breathe new life into the already expansive river travel industry.

On land, the central part of the city is built on a grid, a product of the ancient First Empire's prowess in city planning. Beyond this core, however, the streets can be somewhat chaotic, and maps are usually necessary for non-natives. The recent construction of a city railroad in Gryphusberg has helped alleviate some of the street traffic, and enabled rapid transport between the capital and other cities, such as Kristallstadt.

[2] Purpurite, from the Herzlandisch/German "purpur," meaning purple, is tanzanite. I changed the name because Tanzania doesn't exist in this world, and decided to go with a simple descriptive name.

I still say we should be expanding the Royal Guard. In case you have all forgotten, we sent an expedition North that straight up never returned. That doesn't bode well for what lies beyond our borders.

We have both Celestia and Luna at the peak of their power. No army is marching into Equestria without getting turned to ash by a solar flare or destroyed by a meteor strike. The Royal Guard is just there to handle the smaller threats the Sisters can't be bothered to deal with personally, like the Diamond Dogs and the Timberwolves. And a war against an outside threat would do a lot to unify the kingdom. We'd finally have an excuse to clamp down on the nobility.

Again, I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that we can just weaponize the sun and the stars. The QM has never even hinted that that's a possibility.

Putting aside the argument for militarization (this is, what, the fifth time we've had this conversation?), am I the only one concerned that Luna might be slowly slipping into Nightmare mode? We haven't had many interludes from her point of view lately.
Raptor580 said:
I certainly hope not. We've taken all of the personal actions available to try and make her feel more included, given her her own responsibilities…though the fact that the Qm hasn't let us see whether the rolls on those were successes or failures is concerning.

The QM loves to keep us in suspense. We've had at least 6 different mystery rolls with no context for what they were for other than "events beyond Equestria's borders." And those are just the ones he's let us see. I'm still tearing my hair out over what the upcoming interlude is supposed to be about. "Unexpected Developments" is just about the vaguest title I can imagine.

No, Commodore Perry threatened to bombard cities with artillery and gave the Shogun a white flag to surrender with. This Empire is at least polite enough to extend a hand of friendship while making sure we can clearly see the swords sheathed at their hip.

Ok, we need to start pushing for militarization and industrialization. I agree with Snowdrop, we can't assume we'll have magical dominance forever.

Agreed. It's too bad they left before we could ask about buying their tech off of them. I know they probably won't give us an airship of our own (and with places like Cloudsdale it's not like we really need them), but it would be cool if we could get some of their weapons. Outside of the Princesses and a handful of Unicorns specialized in it, our long range combat options are pretty limited. The Royal Guard could really use some Cannons.

A reminder that Gryphus isn't the only faction we learned about this turn. Speaking of Maretonia, should we…do anything about that?

You want to get involved in another country's Civil War? A Civil War that has been raging for years and has featured the use of Magic WMDs? When we have less than two thousand Royal Guards, with little possibility of being able to convince the nobles to call up the levies? No. We couldn't even if we wanted to, and I don't want to touch that mess with a forty foot pole. Let the Griffons stick their hands into that meat grinder, we have enough problems of our own to deal with.

Equestria Nega-verse 2
Equestria Nega-verse 2
AN: I decided after reading the authors negaverse to try and make one of my own. This is based off the informational post on Griffon Cultural differences and some part are just slightly edited. I hope you all enjoy.
Notes on The Winter War and Equestrian/Griffon Differences

I've seen some discussion about The Griffon's Capabilities and Culture recently in the thread. Most notably a lot of arguments about if they should be at the stage of development and why or why not they might have reached it. As such I have decided to provide so more information on why the Gryphus Empire is the way it is. The most important thing to talk about it the war with Sombra or "The Winter War" given it has perhaps the biggest impact of any event so far in the world.

The Winter war began shortly after the Empire was reunified, Garrick defeated his main rival Brochard in battle, who was killed by Grandmaster Konrad Hardbeak now Konrad "Kingslayer" and given that he squeezed his kingdom very hard in order to raise his army pretty much all his nobles were quick to proclaim their loyalty to the new soon to be Emperor Garrick giving him a lot of popularity with all levels of society at the start of his reign. He then managed to get the rest of the minor states to join diplomatically and began to explore beyond it its borders, the first expedition to the west found the Yak tribes... the second to the south found Sombra approaching with a brainwashed army of about 100,000 slave soldiers plus various dark magic horrors alongside an unnatural blizzard that wrecked the land.

The Griffons responded by not just gathering every troop they could but from mercenaries and knights to militia also putting into production as much of their more experimental weapon concept as possible, things like gunpowder, cannons, stationary flamethrowers and eventually a newfound rare anti-magic ore called Orichalcum. The Yaks responded by send every fighting age Yak of every clan to the battle under portents of certain doom from all their shamans. Even then they were outnumber badly.

As such the strategy chosen was to fortify the pass through the Peregrine mountains on their southern border, Redstone Pass and meet Sombra there. A chokepoint like this made the makeshift mines, cannons and flamethrowers very effective in these battles... even though the first was cleared by Sombra sending waves of starving disposable slaves. To summarize the battle the Allied forces held the pass against successively harsher waves with causalities mounting. Sombra eventually had enough and choose to go all in with himself as he lead his elite guard and horrors. Despite serious causalities instead of blowing the pass with explosive to trigger an avalanche and retreating they instead choose to gamble on collapsing on him in hopes of winning it all. It was effective at damaging his forces but Sombra nearly broke the lines anyway with his magic until the Empress Gabriella rallied them and the Triumvirate of Griffon Unification; Empress, Emperor and Grandmaster charged Sombra. The first two worked together to distract him until Konrad can cut Sombra's horn off destroying his army but having to watch his shadows spirit flee south once more. The Imperial war memorial mentioned by Snowdrop was built to commemorate this battle but with the knowledge they would be fighting a war with more sacrifice on the ay in mind.

This lead to a second longer stage of the war as the heavy losses from the battle mean they can't pursue immediately. Scouting then also results in the Griffons finding out that Sombra's blizzards make an invasion practically impossible and the full horror of Sombra fully mind-controlling his entire population with the first Crystal ponies being rescued by horrified Griffons. The war turns into a several years long stalemate where the Griffons rebuilt and upgraded their army, built up their war machine, built fortifications on the border, committed what sabotage they could to Sombra's war effort and saved what Crystal Ponies they could. Sombra responded by sending winter storms to sabotage their agriculture and making this a fight on literally every level of society to the very bottom rung.

The Griffon found a huge break when they made contact with Neighpon and found new allies quick to support them fully against the Shadow King. Ones with a smaller army but with plenty of magic including Qilin Pyromancy which meant they could now actually send an army to attack the Crystal Empire. Instead of immediately attacking however the Griffons choose to meet Sombra's army on their fortifications, he even brings a full grown dragon corrupted by dark magic... Konrad kills it. Then he lights his sword on fire and kills Sombra a second time in his shadow form. This let's them finally attack the Crystal city and after diving into Sombra's dungeon to find the Crystal heart awaken it from a mix of the love from the imperial couple, collective love of the army for their comrades and patriotism of all involved defeated Sombra while also freeing his slaves. Konrad doesn't technically kill Sombra the final time himself but a lot of stories credit him with it anyway.

It did not however revitalize the land that was devastated or heal the trauma from his rule. As a result in order to not starve to death most Crystal Ponies end up in the Empire which implements an "Adopt a Pony Program" to help house them. With the Emperor leading the way by adopting a new daughter and the population have spent years hearing about just how bad Sombra was most see it as a patriotic duty so they are integrated fairly easily. The Crystal Empire itself annexed as the Crystal protectorate with the option to join or leave down the line save a naval base leased to the Neighponese as the Empire begins the process of rebuilding.

There is no question that the Winter War had a great impact upon its participants. Every race, every nation and clan and class was affected by the conflict. The Yaks learned the horrors of true war, and became aware that the world beyond their homeland was both very big and very dangerous. The varied races of Neighpon were forced to reevaluate their differences and rivalries in the face of a mutual threat to their freedom and existence. And Gryphus? The nation that fought and bled and suffered the most at the dark hoof of Sombra, the nation that served as a bulwark against his cruel ambitions?

The Empire of Gryphus went from a collection of fiefdoms loosely affiliated by virtue of a shared history to a unified nation under a centralized authority. It's people, once divided along cultural, economic or racial lines, were united in the face of a dangerous outside world. The demand for material to fuel the Imperial War Machine led to a massive increase in agricultural and industrial output and the creation and spread of numerous revolutionary innovations. Though countless lives were lost, the Empire has emerged from the war stronger than it was before.

As a result of the Winter War while neither Griffons nor Equestrians see war as something to be glorified or celebrated, with many Ponies seeing it as a last resort that should only be considered once all other options have been exhausted, only the Griffons see armed conflict as both inevitable and ultimately unavoidable. And despite, or perhaps because of so many Imperial families having lost loved ones to the fires of war, there does exist a certain romanticization of war and combat in Imperial Culture. Those who serve, be they knights, sailors or common soldiers, are adored and seen as heroes by the civilian population, and even the idea of dying in battle is looked upon with a certain degree of fondness. If the best way to die is of old age surrounded by loved ones, then the second best way is on the field of battle surrounded by your brothers and sisters in arms, giving your life for the nation and those you fight to protect, be they your family, your comrades or the Emperor.

While this is also true to a lesser extent in Equestria, you have not yet had this belief challenged by a massive, nation-spanning conflict like the Winter War. Any armed clashes you have witnessed were between individual Counts, Dukes and Barons in the days before the Alicorn Sisters unified the nation, with skirmishes smaller in scale and scope than the Battle of Wingbardy, codes of conduct between the warring factions, and casualty counts that never exceeded the low hundreds. Your understanding of war is thus quite limited.
The Griffon view of nobility, like so many other things, was irrevocably changed by the Winter War. At the Battle of Redstone, and the Peregrines, and the Storming of the Crystal City, nobles and commoners fought and bled side by side on the front lines. When the battles ended and the dead were accounted for, many nobles, officers and knights alike, were among them. They were cremated upon the same pyres as the lowest enlisted soldier or militiagryph, and when it came time to promote surviving non-commissioned officers to replace them, many commoners, battle hardened veterans, suddenly found themselves possessing equal or greater ranks in the military than members of the nobility. At first, this chafed at their sense of superiority...but as the war dragged on, and the promoted commoners proved themselves equal in skill and bravery time and again, in some cases saving the lives of their noble counterparts, the commoners earned their respect and admiration, if grudgingly.

This, combined with the settlement and establishment of the new province of Kestrella necessitating the elevation of numerous commoners to the ranks of the nobility to administer it (more than one of which was a Diamond Dog), the Post-Discordian economic boom leading to many merchants and bankers building up levels of wealth previously only held by Nobles, and rapid industrialization producing a burgeoning middle class of city-dwelling burghers, resulted in many of the social barriers between the Nobility and the common people being greatly weakened. There still exists a social divide, but it is much less than it was a few decades ago.

By contrast, the Equestrians, who have not experienced an equivalent war, sudden economic boom or rapid industrialization since the end of the Discordian Era, are still very much an agrarian, feudal society divided along class lines, with fewer opportunities for social mobility.

Current events are also very much affected by the Winter war. The Winter war made the culture of Gryphus very anti-slavery so when relations with Maretonia began with several of their citizens sold into slavery that they refused to even admit they had until the Griffon read out a list of their owners things were deeply hostile from the start. It also made the Griffon's warry of starting a new war so soon after the old one and the Maretonians unwilling to attack since it would bring in Neighpon at minimum since they signed a defensive treaty with the option of more joining in due to positive relations. Instead their was several years of stand off were the Griffons refused to offer any compensation to slaveowner for the return of their citizen till they could have their spies rescue them and high tensions between both until the Queen died starting the Civil war.

These are just some of the differences between the Empire and Equestria that are likely to result in confusion and culture clash at some point in the future. Hopefully this help give a better understanding of why the Gryphus empire is the way it is however.

When I called Sombra Unicorn Sauron I was joking! I didn't think their was an actual Lord of the Rings fight going on offscreen!
So does anyone want to continue to argue that the Griffon's militarism is unrealistic?
No in fact I think I might be coming around to doing some of our own now. Though it is going to be a lot harder for us to pull off because of our stupid nobles! Some people get all the luck of having a convenient Dark Lord to help them centralize power.
I cannot believe that you were holding out on all of this for so long. How smug were you when the Griffons finally made first contact?
It was a very happy moment for me.
Wow! Yaks are awesome! An entire nomadic people and their culture going into a battle bloody beyond what they could ever comprehend in their experience? We need to ally with them too!
Ok great but do the Griffon have Pickelhaube or not? Answer the real question please!
First, it is confirmed the Griffons have cannons now just like I said before and we are absolutely buying some. It is number two on the list behind Railroads which I will just as confidently say they definitely have. If we want to unify the nation nothing will do it like good infrastructure.

Second, this whole post has made me concerned about our long term technological development. If there is one lesson from this it is that Necessity is the Mother of Invention, the Griffons had to adapt or end up Sombra's slave so did and did it well. Now they have a centralized government, gunpowder, a standing army, early industrial technology and far more unified national society. But if we had encounter Sombra would we do the same? A theoretical fight with Sombra would have probably been a mage duel with the Sister resolving things. While that would have saved a lot more lives it also means no long term existential pressure at all levels of society like the Griffons had and as such no great unified populace or government centralization to handle the crisis or large army to defeat his. We can import the machine which will go along way to making similar unification but we are missing some of the things that makes them able to produce it. Do we even have a similar proto-middle class to sustain an industrial economy yet? This is going to change a lot of my plans...
Guys I think Konrad might be the most badass thing in this quest so far. Killing a Dragon and two separate kings the most dangerous of them twice! Please tell me the "Kingslayer" is still around so we can meet him.
Konrad is getting on in years now but he is still alive and both still the Grandmaster of the Knights Lion and the Blackwatch which you saw escorting the Crown Prince. He also received the first Imperial medal of honor and an Orichalcum katana made by Neighponese swordsmiths.
Yes! We need to go to the Empire and meet him at some point.
You know with this in mind it suddenly make a lot of sense why they pulled out all the stops with the first contact for us now, they have learned the importance of first impressions. Their positive early experiences with the Yaks and Neighpon fighting Sombra resulted in strong long terms allies on both of their borders. With a negative first impression with Maretonia lead to years of conflict they are having to launch an invasion to deal with the fallout of even now.

It also explains why their expedition was so well armed and prepared, if one of my exploration efforts ran into Sombra I would be ready for battle for the next one too.
That reminds me @Questor what are the Griffon's relations with Canterbury like? They are our current buffer between the two and they weren't mentioned fighting in the war with Sombra.
Canterbury made contact with the Gryphus Empire the turn after their contact with Maretonia. They already had preexisting tension with Maretonia of their own so ended up allies of convenience from the start. Currently relations are only a half point above your's now, they are friendly and allies but not trusted allies to the same degree as the Yaks or Neighpon is. The reasons why, whatever they are remain unknown to you.

Regarding Equestrian Heartsong
In the magical land of Equestria, it is not an uncommon occurrence for ponies to randomly break out into song and perform what one would assume to be carefully choreographed and well rehearsed musical numbers. The fact that these outbursts are not only completely spontaneous but also entirely unpredictable is something that baffles outsiders. The Equestrians themselves have made little headway in their own attempts to understand this phenomenon which they call Heartsong, only able to conclude that it is a product of the harmonic magic which blankets and infuses their lands.

Ponies that have found themselves a part of these sudden musical performances have described a feeling of gentle compulsion urging them to participate, or of being "swept up in the energy of the moment." They report their bodies moving almost on their own, the tune and lyrics of the song popping into their head as if suddenly planted there. These performances are not completely involuntary however. An individual can choose to "opt out" of a Heartsong if they wish to, simply observing from the outside or carrying on their way if they have something better to do than serve as an impromptu background dancer. Most ponies do not do this however, content or even eager to join in on the act. Part of this may be a result of social pressure or so-called herd mentality, but there is more to their compliance than simple fear of judgement.

Heartsongs are seen as a positive thing. Families, friends, and communities that find themselves experiencing or participating in one are regarded as both magically and socially healthy, and individuals emerging from a Heartsong almost universally report feeling more empathetic and "in-tune" with their fellow performers for hours or even days afterwards, alongside a general feeling of contentment or euphoria. In addition, tasks undertaken while in the midst of a Heartsong are almost universally completed faster than logic would dictate to be possible. While in the midst of a Heartsong, tailors have stitched together dresses from scratch in a matter of minutes, work crews have performed tasks that would normally take hours or days, Ponies have found themselves engaging in acts of dexterity and athleticism that they struggle to replicate under normal conditions, and products created by Ponies in the midst of a musical performance are almost invariably of a high or exceptional quality. As a result of these benefits, many Equestrians have attempted to force the occurrence of Heartsongs, but all of these attempts have met with failure. It is commonly accepted that Heartsongs cannot be artificially induced, and can only occur naturally.

Heartsongs are often limited in scale and duration, typically with only a few dozen participants engaging in an act that lasts a few minutes, though there are exceptions to this rule. And while the vast majority of Heartsongs occur within Equestria, records of outbreaks of "mass hysteria" or "religious mania" in Maretonia and Canterbury suggest that it is not a phenomenon exclusive to the lands ruled over by the Celestial Sisters.

It is commonly accepted by Equestrian Mages that Ponies are the only race capable of experiencing Heartsong. (Citation Needed)

Musical Omake: It's Raining Storm
In the wake of the Maretonian Intervention war and the biggest Heartsong ever recorded, here's a full 'It's Raining Men' parody lyric writeup, I tried to keep the tempo unsure if I succeeded or not. Unsure if this is enough to count as an Omake @Questor, but if so, please put it towards a roll we need against the Ursa Major, thanks. Also yes I know Gabriella didn't go up with the push through the clouds, but the song needed a named person to replace Mother Nature, lol so historical inaccuracy.

OOOOO
Omake(?): 'It's Raining Storm' by the Weather Hens (an 'It's Raining Men' Parody)

Hi! Hi! We're your weather hens,

And have we got news for you!
You better listen,

And don't forget those crossbows at home,
Alright!

Heartsong is rising (Mm rising), morale's getting low (Whose morale, hen?),

Mountain pass is the place to gooooo (You better hurry up),

Omake: Even In Death...
"Even in Death they Still Serve" - Plaque Found Upon the Imperial War Memorial, Origin Unknown
———————————————————————————

"Wake up Konrad."

Konrad Hardbeak stirred, groaning in confusion as he opened his eyes. He blinked, staring uncomprehendingly, and swiftly leapt to his feet. He blinked and shook his head, but the image before him did not change: an endless sea of stars and swirling arcane lights in a realm of darkness. He looked down, seeing no floor or other surface that he could possibly be perched upon. Despite feeling as if he was on solid ground, he looked as if he was standing on thin air, suspended in the middle of a void.

His mind worked furiously, trying to recall how he had come to be here. There had been a battle, he remembered. Some great magical beast that had been threatening the Emperor. He'd taken to the skies alongside the rest of the Blackwatch and…

He blinked, his mind drawing a blank. Why couldn't he remember?

"Welcome, Konrad Hardbeak, Hero of the Empire."

Konrad whirled around, suddenly face to face with a Griffon who had definitely not been standing behind him a moment ago. He reflexively reached for the blade at his side, the Neighponese-style Orichalcum sword that had served him faithfully for so many years…and grasped only empty air. He blinked, glancing down at his scabbard, only to find his blade's sheath missing as well. Along with the rest of his armor and equipment. He was garbed in nothing but his fur and his feathers, armed with nothing but his beak and his talons. He didn't think he had ever felt so exposed.

Now very much on guard, he examined the strange Griffon standing at ease before him. They looked…almost painfully average, really. He wouldn't describe them as tall or short, fat or thin, skinny or muscular. The only eye-catching feature they possessed was the unusual color of their plumage: a bright sky blue.

"Who are you? Where are we? What did you do with my equipment!?"

The other Griffon glanced around, as if only now noticing the bizarre nature of their surroundings, utterly unfazed by the anger of the Knight who had slain kings.

"This place? I suppose you could think of it as the space between. As for your weapon and armor…"

They sighed.

"Much as I wish it were otherwise, I'm afraid they could not make the journey with you."

Konrad frowned, unhappy at the nonsensical answer.

"The space between what?"

The stranger turned back to face him, and Hardbeak was suddenly struck by the realization that the other Griffon's eyes had no pupils or irises. They were a pure, almost blinding white.

"Life and Death."

The knight recoiled as if struck, grimacing as he brought a taloned hand to his forehead, memories flooding his mind.

He remembered. The blades of the Blackwatch had bitten deep, but the beast's hide had been thick. The pain and blood loss it had suffered as it's vitals were targeted had sent it into a frenzy, lashing out with increasingly desperate swipes of it's building-sized paws, it's jaws snapping shut with force sufficient to crush boulders to powder.

The other knightly orders had taken to the air, adding their own blades to the effort, attempting to force the beast into a death by a thousand cuts. They shouldn't have done that. The Watch was sufficient, they could have brought it down alone, there hadn't been any need to risk the lives of so many good Griffons.

Some young squire, a fledgling just barely into adulthood, had flown too close to the creature's mouth in an attempt to gouge out it's eyes. The Ursa had jerked it's head suddenly, the aspiring knight falling into it's open mouth.

Hardbeak hadn't hesitated.

He had dived down into the maw of the beast, grabbed the boy's hand, wrenched him up and thrown him clear with all his strength…

Konrad looked out upon the astral plane with new eyes.

"I'm dead."

His tone was resigned. Unsurprised. He was a warrior after all. He'd always known he would die in battle.

The strange Griffon nodded, looking genuinely apologetic.

"I'm afraid so."

Konrad re-examined the stranger, this denizen of the place between the living world and the afterlife.

"Who…what are you?"

The blue-feathered Griffon hummed.

"The answer to that question will require some explanation. You are familiar with the faith of the Neighponese? Their belief that all natural objects possess a sort of guardian spirit?"

Konrad raised an eye ridge, unsure of where this was going.

"Yes?"

"Then, for lack of any better descriptor, I suppose you could think of me as the spirit of the nation."

The odd Griffon mantled their wings about themselves.

"I…am Gryphus."

Hardbeak stared, unable to formulate a response to that. After a long period of silence, and another glance at the blinking stars and lights in the far distance, he chose to focus upon the obvious question.

"So…what happens now?"

Gryphus inhaled, as if bracing themselves.

"Now you have a choice to make."

The spirit raised a talon, and a portal suddenly opened, a tear in space forming in front of Konrad, light pouring out from it in a great radiant beam.

Hardbeak peered through into the realm beyond and saw lightandpeaceandjoyandfamilyandhopeandlightand-

The portal snapped shut, Konrad whirling to stare at the blue-feathered spirit. He found himself panting, a hand outstretched to where the gateway had been. He shook himself, taking a step back, trying to recompose himself.

"What…what was that?"

Gryphus' voice was solemn.

"That was the afterlife. The place where the souls of the good and the righteous go when they pass on from the world of the living."

Hardbeak blinked.

"All of them?"

The spirit snorted, rolling it's eyes.

"Were you expecting each religion to get it's own dedicated afterlife?"

The war hero shrugged. Truthfully he'd never put much thought into what might lie beyond death, if anything at all. He'd only known that he'd eventually find out for sure, one way or the other, so there hadn't been much point in getting worked up over it.

The spirit shook it's head.

"Good souls are good souls, regardless of their race, beliefs, or nationality."

Konrad wasn't going to argue against that.

"So…is that where I am meant to go?"

Gryphus sighed.

"It is where you can go. But there is…another option."

The spirit hesitated, suddenly looking uncomfortable.

"You know better than most that there are terrible things in the world. Things so terrible few can comprehend the true extent of their evil, or the danger they represent."

"I'm afraid that here is no different."

The spirit waved it's hand again, a light like a lantern igniting in it's palm, and Hardbeak saw.

He saw the things in the dark surrounding them, a dark tide of countless millions kept at bay by the light given off by the spirit, beasts of undulating flesh and smoke with hundreds of baleful eyes. He saw gaping, slathering maws filled with thousands of teeth made of shadows and nightmares. And he felt their hatred.

They hated him. Hated him so purely and totally that no mortal being could ever fully comprehend the depth of their animosity. They hated him for thinking. They hated him for feeling. They hated him for being.

They didn't just want to hurt him, to tear his soul to shreds and end his existence. They wanted it to be that he had never existed at all.

Just as suddenly as the light came into existence, it went out, the illumination fading, the monsters melting back into the darkness. Hardbeak could not see them, but he knew that they were still there. Watching, waiting for an opportunity to reach him, only held back by the presence of the spirit that stood alongside him. He stared into the blackness, form rigid with tension.

Gryphus' gaze had never left Hardbeak's, their facial expression not changing one iota as the eldritch horrors had eyed the two of them like scraps of meat that had personally offended them.

"There are things in this realm that are worse than Discord. Worse than Sombra. Worse than anything the mortal world can conjure up."

Konrad took a deep breath, finally understanding what was happening, what the spirit was asking of him.

"You want me to fight them. Don't you?"

Gryphus sighed, their shoulders sagging as their face fell. Hardbeak had seen that look on many soldiers in the past. The exhausted veterans, the officers who had lost soldiers under their command, those who had spent years with the weight of the world upon their shoulders and knew that they would have to bear that burden for years to come.

He would know. He'd seen that face in the mirror more times than he could count.

"I cannot fight them alone. Not anymore. I have held them at bay for as long as I have existed, have killed more than can be counted…but there are always more. If I continue to stand alone, I will fail."

The way Gryphus spoke that final word implied many terrible things. The spirit gave him a look that was equal parts desperate and apologetic.

"I do not wish to ask this of you. You have dedicated your life to the Empire, have done more for it than any one person could ever be expected to do. If anyone has earned an eternity of peace, it is you."

Hardbeak closed his eyes in contemplation, considering. He thought back to the feeling of warmth and light and peace that had suffused him for the briefest of moments, a joy that paled in comparison to anything he had ever felt in life.

"If I do this…will I ever be able to go to…that place?"

The spirit shook their head.

"I wish I could tell you that this is a fight that can be won…that it is a war that will end, that you will one day be allowed to rest…but I can't. I cannot promise you anything but an eternity of struggle."

Hardbeak remembered the stares of unending hatred from a million pairs of eyes, venom dripping from slathering jaws made of nightmares.

"And if you do fail…what will happen then?"

The blue-feathered Griffon gave him a haunted look.

"Should I fail, and the veil between realms be breached…then all will be lost. Gryphus, Equis…even the afterlife itself…all will be devoured."

Konrad sighed. Well…that simplified things didn't it?

"I've given one life for the Empire…I reckon I've got one more in me."

The spirit sagged in relief, but it's smile was tinged with sadness.

"I figured you would say that."

Gryphus waved their hand one final time…and Konrad found himself standing in the main hall of a great fortress. It reminded him of the Lion's Den, the Citadel of a knightly order…but this one was enormous, big enough to hold a city!

And he and the spirit were not the only ones present.

Konrad saw other warriors, hundreds of them, scattered throughout the hall, engaged in all of the actions he would expect to see soldiers and knights carrying out in the lulls between battle.

He saw a hen in the camouflage-patterned cloak of the Jaegerbattalion carefully inspecting the workings of a crossbow that looked like it was made of gold. He saw an entire company of soldiers in the uniforms of the army of Griffonia conducting sword drills in a far corner of the room, their armor shimmering as if in the sun, all while a pair of knights bearing the emblem of the Order of the Panther conducted a spar in midair, the two veterans moving so quickly even Hardbeak struggled to follow their movements.

And there weren't just Griffons present. Konrad saw a platoon of nearly transparent Crystal Ponies standing at parade rest, an equally equine officer instructing and inspecting them. He saw a pair of enormous Yaks what looked like a flame projector on wheels. He saw a quartet of Diamond Dogs in the soot and grease-stained uniforms of the Imperial Engineering corps gathered around a massive cannon, the barrel big enough to fit an entire person inside.

Gryphus turned to him with the tiniest of smiles.

"You didn't think that I would expect you to fight the endless hordes alone, did you?"

Konrad stared.

"Are they…"

The spirit's smile fell as he turned to regard the mass of heavenly soldiers.

"Those who dedicated their lives to the Empire…and those who died in service of it. They are the only ones who I can reach. The only ones who I can ask everything of."

Gryphus shook their head.

"It is a cruel irony that the souls who I must ask to sacrifice an eternity in paradise are the ones most deserving of that final rest."

Konrad Hardbeak turned to the blue-feathered Griffon. If this was only a single hall of a vast Citadel…

"Do you ask every soldier of the Empire to do this? To give up heaven and fight for eternity?"

"I do."

"…How many say yes? How many dead heroes are here?"

Hardbeak had never heard a Griffon sound so proud and yet so very sad.

"All of them Konrad. Every single one."

I know the canon update above took a while and isn't really long enough to justify the wait, so I wrote up an apology Omake that I was randomly inspired to write while working on it. Not sure if it came out as well as it could have but I think I got the feeling I was hoping to convey across.

World Building Omake: Crime and Punishment in the Empire of Gryphus
In the hamlets, villages and rural communities of Gryphus, law enforcement is very reminiscent of the Wild West. Each community typically possesses a Sheriff or Bailiff, either elected to the position by popular vote or appointed by whatever local authority may exist, be that a mayor, town council, or village elder. It falls to these enforcers of the peace to administer the law within their jurisdictions by whatever means they see fit. The use of posse comitatus, or the summoning of local citizens to assist in the enforcement of the law, is a common tactic employed to pursue those accused of crimes. Punishments vary depending on the nature of one's transgressions. In the cases of minor crimes and misdemeanors, fines and public shaming are the most frequently administered consequences. In the case of more serious crimes, accused perpetrators will usually be sent to the nearest town or city for the courts to take up their case...assuming they survive long enough to make it there.

In the larger towns and cities of the Empire, the law is enforced by a combination of hue and cry, where common citizens may make arrests of individuals actively engaged in criminal acts, and the City or Town Guard. Equal parts law enforcement agency and citizens militia, these taxpayer-funded organizations are expected not only to pursue and investigate crimes committed in urban areas, but to serve as a paramilitary force supplementing the Imperial Army and the Knightly Orders should their homes ever come under threat. These are the irregular troops that the Emperor Garrick summoned to fight off Sombra when the Dread King's army threatened the Empire. It should not come as a surprise that many guards are Imperial army veterans who have semi-retired from active service, bringing their considerable experience fighting the enemies of the nation to the table.

The Empire's legal system is based on civil law and a comprehensive code of statutes. Imperial Courts utilize an inquisitorial system where judges are actively involved in investigating the facts of the case before them. This system is in contrast to the judiciary of Equestria, which utilizes an adversarial, common law system with trial by jury.

At the end of their legal education at university, all law students must pass a state examination before they can continue on to an apprenticeship that provides them with broad training in the legal profession over the course of the next two years. They then must pass a second examination that qualifies them to practice law. At that point, the individual can choose either to be a lawyer or to enter the judiciary. Judicial candidates start working at courts immediately, however, they are subjected to a probationary period of up to five years before being officially appointed as judges for life.

There exist three levels in the Imperial Justice System. Ordinary Courts, High Courts, and the Supreme Court. Ordinary Courts are trial courts, which handle the majority of legal cases. High Courts are appellate courts which review decisions of the Ordinary Courts. The Supreme Court, the "court of last word", is empowered to review the decisions of the high courts. Only a bare handful of cases are ever elevated to the level of the Supreme Court, and almost all of them have been civil disputes between nobles and powerful merchants.

Prisons in the Empire vary in nature, but most tend to incorporate some manner of penal labor, from inmates performing minor maintenance tasks to voluntary chain gangs and purpose built prison-farms and mines. These practices are meant to assist in the funding of the respective correctional facilities and to ensure the fitness and occupation of inmates, as it is believed that idleness leads to restlessness amongst the prison population. Some prisons actually provide inmates with a small amount of compensation for their labor, though the pay is not nearly as much as if they had been performing the same work outside of prison.

During the Winter War, many convicts serving time for minor crimes were offered suspended sentences if they volunteered for military service. These soldiers were folded into existing units rather than special penal squadrons, and fought at Redstone, the Peregrines and the Battle of Crystal City alongside their fellow Imperials. Those who survived had their records cleared at the conclusion of their term of enlistment. Many opted to remain with the army after the war to pursue their careers there.

Organized Crime in the Empire comes in two broad flavors: Street Gangs and Underground Guilds.

Street gangs can be found in most cities of the Empire, and vary wildly in size and influence, from groups of only a dozen griffons, dogs or ponies laying claim to a single street, to groups of over a hundred that exert influence over entire districts in the largest cities. These gangs make their money through pickpocketing, burglary, grifting, armed robbery, and "Protection" rackets where merchants that refuse to pay up have their businesses vandalized. These street gangs are largely informal in structure, and tend to be composed of young, lower class individuals.

Then there are the underground guilds. Individuals belonging to these guilds or "societies" rarely refer to themselves as criminals, and in fact many of their enterprises are semi-legal, or at least not as blatantly illegal as those of the street gangs. Their sources of income include underground lotteries, gambling dens, tax-free bootleg alcohol or smuggled foreign goods, high-interest loans, and protection rackets that provide actual protection (usually from the aforementioned street gangs). In contrast to the street gangs, these guilds have a formalized Mafia-like hierarchy, and attempt to cultivate a veneer of legitimacy by investing in legal businesses. Many members were already successful merchants before joining the organization, and some of the most influential and prosperous guilds can actually count minor nobility amongst their ranks.

As one can imagine, the gangs tend to be pursued by law enforcement a lot more than the guilds. Not due to any instances of bribery (which authorities are always quick to crack down on) but due to the difficulty of actually prosecuting them, as well as an unofficial acknowledgment that the guilds are a lesser evil in the face of other criminals, something helped along by the fact that many guilds actually have a tendency to crack down on petty thieves and pickpockets in areas they hold sway in, to say nothing of their feuds with the more threatening street gangs. On more than one occasion the guilds have actually cooperated with law enforcement to combat criminal elements seen as more dangerous to the public welfare than a group of "legitimate businessgryphs."

Rumors also persist of instances of cooperation between underground guilds and the Ministry of Information, the Imperial spy agency supposedly utilizing the criminal business networks as deniable counterintelligence and domestic spying assets. The ministry itself has never publicly acknowledged these rumors.

Maretonia Civil War Aftermath
@TheLordofAwesome @jonasquinn @Questor Here's a version of post-war events that would more sense to me, given the actual realities each faction is facing. I've been working on it since TheLordofAwesome replied to me about the Abolitionists splintering either yesterday or the day before that. Sorry for the delay!

Factions

The Royal Guard: Though they may have won the war, it sure doesn't feel like it. They've been beaten down, decapitated by the pegasi, and are now facing the prospect of the Abolitionists seizing control of the whole country. With their political relevance slipping fast and fear of increased Imperial influence spreading, they must act quick if they wish to continue the legacy of Mareia!

Abolitionists - Reformist: Having successfully won the war and now in control of most of Maretonia, the Abolitionist coalition has found itself set adrift. It may have held together for the noble cause of abolitionism, but no one can quite agree what to do next. The newly-dubbed Reformists and Imperialists have taken large internal pluralities of the coalition, but there still awaits a significant pool of Undecideds fresh for the taking.

As it stands, the lesser nobility and burghers have begun clamoring for Ambrosia to work towards a monarchy that will enshrine their rights and protections and create a new, bureaucratized system from which the best and most-educated can lead the country. Though warm towards the Gryphonian Empire, they seek a Maretonia that is strong, independent, and able to bring peace and harmony alongside their new feathery partners from the north.

Abolitionists - Imperialist: Having successfully won the war and now in control of most of Maretonia, the Abolitionist coalition has found itself set adrift. It may have held together for the noble cause of abolitionism, but no one can quite agree what to do next. The newly-dubbed Reformists and Imperialists have taken large internal pluralities of the coalition, but there still awaits a significant pool of Undecideds fresh for the taking.

Whether through a genuine idealization of the Gryphonians or a pragmatic belief that only they can rebuild Maretonia to new heights, these Abolitionists seek a unification with the Gryphonian Empire, being inspired by the model province that is the Crystal Protectorate. These ex-slaves and formerly oppressed peasantry of Maretonia believe that the Gryphons have a superior technological and cultural gap that would greatly aid in Maretonia's recovery, bringing stability and prosperity back to its lands. However, they will need to push back against the Reformists and sway the Undecideds if they truly wish for a Union.

House White Star: Of all factions, White Star has truly suffered the worst. They have lost their leader, their forces, their wealth, their land, and now their economic mainstay. Though Countess Copper Top remains a favorite among the Old Guard, such concerns are quickly becoming irrelevant to the new Maretonian political scene dominated by the Abolitionist coalition. The Old Guard that still backs her for a return to the status quo antebellum (minus the slavery of course), as the caste is the rightful way of things. These calls have held little sway and White Star has found itself a sinking ship. Something must be done quickly to save its cause.

Army of Pegicles: Dishonored and leaderless, the pegasi are left without goals or direction. Even with them, they wouldn't have the might left to truly enforce them upon others. The command were killed by Gryphonian bombs, most of the grunts have been imprisoned by the Abolitionists, and a scant few former Royal Guards have been taken by Jewelius to face charges of desertion and treason. The remaining bunch have escaped into the wilds, resorting to banditry and sell-swordery to make ends meet. It would take a true miracle for these lost pegasi to once more rise to glory.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Potential Outcomes

Rise of the Gutter Queen: Through charm, guile, and a healthy amount of reconciliation and deal-making, Ambrosia has successfully held together her ragtag coalition of abolitionists to forge it into a true political force to lead Maretonia into an age of prosperity and harmony. Crowned Queen Ambrosia I, the future looks bright for the Maretonians as, for the first time for many, they dream of a future of friendship, peace, and harmony.

Effects: Ambrosia is the new queen. Abolitionists are reforged into a new, stronger party with unifying goals and ideology. Rights of lesser nobility and burghers enshrined into law. Strong trade and investment established with Imperials and high chance of a defensive alliance and furthered partnership in the future. Reactionaries and conservatives sidelined for the moment. Recalcitrant Royal Guard reluctantly swears loyalty. Reactionaries and conservatives refuse to recognize the new monarchy as legitimate.

A New Protectorate: Having successfully swayed the Reformists and Undecideds that the best chance for Maretonia to prosper is with the Gryphons, an Imperial Protectorate has been established over Maretonia at the behest of the Imperialist faction. They have a lot of work to do if they wish to keep it, however. Burdened by promises of prosperity and stability, the Gryphonian Empire will need to act quickly to rebuild Maretonia to new heights if they wish to consolidate their grip over the region.

Effects: Maretonia becomes a protectorate of the Gryphonian Empire. Reactionaries and conservatives are sidelined for the moment. Investment in political, physical, and economic infrastructure needs to be immediate or reactionaries and conservatives will gain support. Royal Guard refuses to swear loyalty to foreigners and disbands as an organization - possible hot spot for future trouble. General populace is cautious but hopeful of their new overlords.

Stinging Maretonia's Rump: Having failed to fully reconcile the two primary factions of her coalition, Ambrosia has had to make strong concessions. In return for the political support of the Imperialist faction, Ambrosia will cede a slice of land along the northern border to be a new Imperial protectorate for any Maretonian citizens or peasantry whom wish to live under the empire or reunite with their families in the Crystal Protectorate. With her position weakened by infighting and the fury of the other factions, Ambrosia can only hope she will manage to consolidate her power quickly enough.

Effects: Ambrosia is the new queen. Abolitionist faction in power but weakened. Limited rights of lesser nobility and burghers enshrined into law. Northern border with Gryphonian Empire shifted south to river. Potential for conservatives and reactionaries to create revanchist sentiment to boost themselves into power. Trade established with Gryphonian Empire. Tenuous chance for investment and alliance with Gryphons due to weakened political position. Royal Guard refuses to swear loyalty to the faction that sold away Maretonian territory and disbands as an organization - potential hot spot for future trouble. Conservatives and reactionaries refuse to recognize the new monarchy as legitimate.

Mareia Walks Once More: Miraculously, Ambrosia and the Reformist faction have managed to find common ground with the Royal Guard and the remnants of House White Star led by Copper Top. With a unity government secured, Queen Copper Top has been coronated and the Legacy of Mareia is secured. Maretonia may face a few bumps on the way there, but there is a happy future to look forward to for most Maretonians.

Effects: Copper Top is the new queen. New moderate faction emerges from the ruins of the Old Guard, the Royal Guard, and the Reformist faction of the Abolitionists. Trade and limited investment established with the Gryphonian Empire. Low chance of strictly defensive alliance in the future. Rights of lesser nobility and burghers enshrined into law. Royal Guard swears loyalty to the new monarchy. Imperialist Abolitionists pushed into stable opposition. Slow process of centralization of powers to the Crown begins. Mareia's legacy secured!

The Army's Pet State: In a move that has surprised everyone, Jewelius has struck a deal with the Old Guard and the remnants of the Army of Pegicles to secure the sovereignty of Maretonia against the Gryphonians and their Abolitionist allies. They have crowned Copper Top as the legitimate queen of Maretonia in what has been viewed by Gryphonian onlookers as a soft coup. Facing mass unrest from the de facto reestablishment of the status quo antebellum and the Gryphonian Empire looking on with a wary eye, this continuation of "Mareia's" legacy seems to have a dark and rocky road ahead of it.

Effects: Copper Top is the new puppet-queen. Anti-Imperialist government established in Maretonia. All Imperials are to leave the country and investment to be gone. Authority centralized in the capital. Stratocracy formed. Former members of Pegicles' army are pardoned in return for loyalty. Former high nobles given prominent positions in the new government. Mass unrest among the general populace. Chance of return to civil war should Jewelius fail to quickly stabilize. Possible chance for warfare with the Gryphonian Empire after rebuilding and rearmament has taken place. Mareia's legacy secured (?)

Maretonia's Warlord Period: Despite Gryphonian intervention, all deal-making has broken down and left Maretonia in a stalemate. Such a situation was never going to last and the battered Maretonians are preparing once more for war, each for their own unique vision of Maretonia.

Effects: Maretonia fragments into multiple warlord states. Recovery set back generations. Famine exacerbated. There are no more clear battle lines to support.

Those Revolting Peasants: The ceasefires and political maneuverings have broken down and Maretonia has once more descended into chaos. Unable to stand the thought of further warfare and betrayed by Gryphonian inaction, the peasantry and ex-slaves have risen up to take control of multiple spots of authority across the, declaring themselves to be under the legitimate authority of a new form of government they call a "Peasant Republic." They shall no longer slave under the old caste. They have risen up to create a Maretonia by the peasantry, for the peasantry!

Effects: Mass chaos and instability throughout Maretonia. Continued rise in banditry as new republic struggles to make something wholly brand new. Republic turns inward into diplomatic isolationism. High racial strife as furious Earth Ponies strike back at the Unicorns and Pegasi they identity as the source of their historical troubles. High chance of fragmentation of Maretonia if republic is not consolidated and stabilized. Increased monster attacks (?)

A Draconequus' Curiosity

Fate.

Always there, always weaving away. Never able to be broken no matter what I do, no matter what I change.

I was angry at first, when I found out what was planned. I was to be a bring of unity! I was to be turned to stone, let out a few thousand years later to test some aspiring student, and then just fade away! So I tried to stop, or at least change fate. When that didn't work I decided that if I couldn't change my fate, I could at least enjoy the time before my end.

Enjoy I did, what caught my fancy I toyed with, and what annoyed me I, well- let's not talk of those not here. And before too long, they came. The sisters, my to be jailers. I fought, I used many a trick, laid some for later. They fought, and brought the elements to bear. Those rainbow rock candies of fate.

I may be a god of disharmony, but even I am beholden to fate.

I was stone.

'And so,' I remember thinking, 'this is it, my end.'

But then, a change. It was unthinkable! Where I, The God Of Disharmony and Chaos failed, some Emperor succeeded in killing himself by drink! I was livid. I was overjoyed. but more than that, I was curious. What had changed? So I used what scraps of my power remained in this stone tomb and looked into the endless probabilities of the world, the chaos that underpins all of reality.

And I laughed. I howled. I screamed. I saw.

Threads.

Stretching across and beyond the infinite.

Beings, the likes of which I had never seen. Not able to do much more than nudge things, but I of all beings know that sometime a nudge is all you need. And so a nudge here, a mix up in the distillation process there, and a Emperor is dead.

I looked further. A merchant heir, a warrior wife. The rise of an Empire unlike any before. The Emperor's seeming foreknowledge of what to do. I was confused, not and easy task for one such as me, but confused I was. Why had they made sure that such an Empire would come into being? Why would it benefit them?

With burning curiosity, I looked Deeper.

And I saw the truth. What had seemed like good fortune and a strangely knowledgeable Emperor was in fact a front for more of these beings. They decided what to research, where to explore. And they were so delightfully chaotic! Endless arguing, infighting, and dreaming.

But more so, I saw plans. What they wished to see the world come to. An amalgam of dissonance and harmony. A story. A game.

I could not agree more.

Fate has much power, but even it can be broken. It just seemed that it took a little while longer than most.

And so I with drew my gaze back into my stone prison and waited.

I cannot wait to see what happens, can You, dear Questers?

The musings of a chaotic spirt on fate

Fate

What a strange word Fate is, So small yet so big. So much weight is put into such a word yet to few ever truly understand it.

But not I no no no, I understands it well Why do you think your little empire Lives My audience?
Surprised are you hmm, and why shouldn't you be after all I planed this beginning why else would The little Rose find that book And the King would conveniently drink himself to death when I was sealed?
My my you think you would learn there are no such thing as coincidence in this world my audience

What you think I didn't know I would get sealed? ha ha ha I am a God and a VERY powerful one at that even though fate is not my realm dose not mean I can't affect it after all it is the nature of chaos to change

What was that saying you mortals have? Ah yes there it is

Fate is not set in stone,
My dear human

Pretty much my first attempt at anything like this :/
