Quiet Patrol- Turn 1
Phoenix
< This is the Phoenix, we'll be your capital ship this evening, high command didn't want to risk the carriers. >

You and GK flank Thunder in a standard arrowhead formation, looking for all the world like a model EFF Squadron. Your beam rifle rest in neatly in your Gundam's hand and your shotgun on your back, the shield feels a bit strange though. GK decided to go for a Bazooka and Bullpup MG combo, were as Thunder went for a GM rifle and Beam Carbine. Of course she did still have that massive Heat Blade on her Gundam's back.

Magic Hand
<
This is Magic Hand, 85th Lead. Leave the support to us. >

The 85th didn't have a Gundam among them and their weapons were a mix of GM Rifles and C2 Beam Rifles, although Magic Hand was flying a GM Guard Custom.

Magic Hand
<
It's gonna be a long patrol so settle in everyone. >

Federation Pilot

Damn! I hate missions like this I never know what to say! >

You could sit in silence, would be a nice change of pace. >

Think we should talk to the people with us. Would be a nice way to get ties and connections to other formations. We can talk about anything but I think a good topic is what kind of celebration Zeon forces got dragged away for.

[X] Just focus on the mission

We can chat when we aren't on duty. Conversation could distract people and possibly be the difference between spotting an ambush and getting hit.

also, @manofjay I was wondering, Pulse-AA seems like its flat out better than normal AA guns for warships. Could we retrofit all our ships to use Pulse AA instead of normal AA guns?

It is more expensive, so it would have to be an action to refit each class. However once the rest of the fleet is filled out we will be able to refit based on size (Capital/Cruiser/Light Cruiser/Destroyer).

As of now you are missing a Battleship and a "medium" Cruiser. Your also missing the tech for proper torpedo mounts (which which will be available next turn) so you don't have any torpedo Cruisers or Destroyers.
Medium Cruisers aren't really a thing though. For the most part cruisers are split into two categories escort cruiser and combat cruisers. Missile Cruisers and Battlecruiser are actually just derivatives of the two with a changed focus.

While obviously we need a battleship design, (I remember we were planning to do that once the space elevator is built) we already have the Nova and Hela cruisers, why do we need another cruiser design?

Your current naval tech base can be most accurately described as "WW2 in space" so well you have a Battlecruiser and a Light Cruiser (that's really more of a Destroyer leader), you don't have a "Cruiser" Cruiser.
If that makes sense

But WW2 had both heavy cruisers and light cruisers, lots of them. A battlecruiser is basically just a faster battleship with less armor, but the Nova is less armed than a battleship and is designed to be produced in large numbers, ergo its a heavy cruiser. The entire point of heavy cruisers is that they are in between light cruiser and battlecruisers, and are cheap enough to have sufficient numbers for convoy protection or serving in multiple combat theaters.

I will put together a write-up on how I would think our doctrine would be, what roles our ships play, and what ships we need to round out our fleet.

The Nova fills the normal Cruiser slot though yeah it is called a Battlecruiser but it is the main combat ship in the cruiser bracket. The only other thing that could be made is a Missile boat in either cruiser size or destroyer size (cause we wouldn't make two different sizes for that role)

All right, all right, fair enough. Still need the Battleship though, and I look forward to the write up.

If we hadn't made the Nova the first real combat ship then it would probably be in the low enough Numbers to be considered a major capital ship instead of a normal one. But it was created with the intention of forming the backbone of our fleet. If we had armed to a greater degree as well it would move up in rank but that would also mean it was a bit larger. Once we make the Battleship and Missile Cruiser that fills most if not all roles.

Still working on doctrine and ship role details, but that will take a while
Proposed Fleet organization:
  • The purpose of the Federation navy is to defend strategically important locations, protect civilians, and destroy enemy fleets.
  • Therefore, the navy should be arranged into 4 fleets, each of which is assigned a general area of the solar system to operate in.
  • Each fleet's primary goal is to ensure that strategic locations and convoys in their theater are kept secure, and their secondary goal is to destroy enemies operating in their theater.
    • 1st Fleet protects the Earth Sphere and surrounding area
    • 2nd Fleet will defend Atlas Station, Mars, and the surrounding area
    • 3rd Fleet is responsible for patrols and convoy escorts in the inner Solar system (all space closer than the asteroid belt)
    • 4th Fleet is responsible for patrolling the asteroid belt and the outer solar system.
  • Given the vast distances inherent in space, Fleets are further divided into Task Forces.
    • A Taskforce is a group of ships drawn from their parent fleet, assembled for a specific purpose or mission.
      • Task forces are designated using a 2-3 digit number. The first digit is the fleet that the task force is from, while the second number is sequentially assigned.
      • Example: The third Taskforce from 1st fleet would be TF 13
      • Example: The first Taskforce from 3rd fleet would be TF 31
      • Example: The eighth Taskforce from 4th fleet would be TF 48
I was going to add more detail about how to break the TFs down even further, into Task groups and Task units, but realized that's more detail than is really needed. The method for designating Taskforces is from how the US navy did it during WW2.
