Earthsphere News Network 8/9 Suplemental

Turmoil and change in the Aerospace Industry:

Harvick has found itself facing two separate attempts to buy out and absorb it; the first from Anaheim Electroics attempting to break into the arms industry and the second from Zeon's MIP corporation. With three industry giants distracted, formerly bit players have re-risen to prominence including Northrom (formerly Northrop Grumman) and General Motors. Both Northrop and General Motors have secured licenses to produce the RGM series mobile suits for the Federation and the Colonies.

Notes:
Northrom and GM eventually became Shinsei Industry and General Galaxy respectively in Macross Canon.
Anaheim bought out both Harvick and MIP in Gundam Canon.

A round of mergers in Zeon:

Several Zeon armaments companies are in the planning stages for mergers next year. Abine and Brash are Zeon's major energy-weapons research and manufacturing corporations, they intend to streamline Zeon's beam weapons research and manufacturing by bringing it all under one aegis as part of the United Maintenance Plan. Felipe, Garmonica, and Khanom worked together to develop the Zaku's monoeye and now they are planning for greater cooperation in line with Zeon's UMP.

Notes:
All of these Zeon companies were gobbled up by Anaheim in Canon after the One Year War.

Earth Federation Forces ignores push from arms industry to upgrade Earthside forces:

With the EFF ground and naval forces obsolete in the face of Mobile Suits and Alien Overtechnology numerous manufacturers are offering upgrades and replacements for the EFF's arsenal, but the EFF simply isn't buying. The only companies who have weathered this appear to be the mergers Viggers/Chrauler and Centinental/Kransmann who have developed specialized ground-variants of the Zaku Ritter and GM and industry juggernaut Rheinmetall which has spearheaded research and development of the EFF's new railgun technology.

The only bight spot appears to be the newly burgeoning submarine force. Earlier this year the EFF launched the first vessels of the U-class and Lockwood-class submarines with many more having begun construction in drydock. With the looming potential threat of orbital bombardment the EFF has made the decision to transition from a surface-based fleet to an entirely submersible fleet. Naval architects now have the daunting task of building submersible aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships to satisfy the EFF's perceived needs.

Notes:
1. Viggers/Chrauler and Centinental/Kransmann manufactured Destroid mecha in Macross Canon
2. I don't know why having Rheinmetall spearhead railgun research in the private sector jumped out to me, it just seemed to work.
3. In Gundam Canon the U-Type and Lockwood class submarine prototypes were captured by Zeon before the EFF could launch them. Zeon devolped them into the Jukon class and Mad Angler class respectively while adding the capability to carry and launch mobile suits.
4. In Macross Canon the Prometheus and Daedalus actually were submersible, we just never got to see them do it because the SDF-1 took them into space.

Zeon's Third-Generation Mobile Suit Competition set to go ahead:

Later this month three prototypes from three companies are set to face each other, each one with the intent of replacing Zeon's venerable Zaku-II. Zeonic's Gelgoog, Zimmad's Gyan, and Kampfer a collaboration by Zimmad and MIP. All companies are keeping their cards mostly to their chests regarding final specifications but some details have come to light.

Gelgoog is supposedly a general purpose machine that can fill most roles evenly, like the Zaku and GM. Gyan is supposedly meant to complement Zimmad's Dom-II, the Dom focusing on heavy armor and ranged firepower with the Gyan focusing on speed, maneuverability, and melee combat. Kampfer is even faster and more lightly armored than the Gyan but features engines and an Inertial Dampaner that promises speed and acceleration comparable to Zero-Wolf's new Resolute fighter.

All three machines are suspected to have alien Overtechnology integrated from the very beginning rather than slapped on afterwards.

Notes: The Kampfer was designed and built by Zimmand in Canon but I decided to change things up.

Pretty good but the Navy is not obsolete and we have upgraded all our forces with better tech from beam weapons, to ballistics and missiles which means the arms manufacturers are getting a massive increase in profits since we are expanding all our branches as fast as practical. Not to mention armor upgrades and better engines and generators are also being built and purchased by the EFF so if anything the arms manufacturers should be making bank and expanding production.

Simi-Canon, take a plus 15, the only thing keeping from full canon is that both me and Zeon have plans for the Gelgoog and Kampfer.

@manofjay Can you put my +15 from the omake into the TZ White Rabbit action. Also Maybe you should make a new Information Tab that keeps track of who has Omakes and what they are and how much they are worth so people know when they can use them. Cause I think there are a few people who have bonuses that might have forgotten about them at this point.

Sure thing, I'll think about the info tab too.

You know now that we have improved our ballistic weapons and are refining railgun tech and should figure out coilgun and gauss tech eventually we should be able to improve the conventional military forces as well. Trying to rely on only Mobile weapons is a good way to lose once those MS get beaten. True Combined Arms doctrines are going to need to be used to win this fight instead of relying on a single type of weapon.

its giant robots, but hey if we get far enough in the automation tree, think we can build the Arsenal bird super-weapons from Ace Combat but with Human Oversight?

And those same Giant robots got their asses handed to them by conventional forces in one of the largest and most important battles of the OYW. Plus in Macross, the mechs aren't the real main weapon that is the warships.

Just to be clear, Operation Odessa was fought by conventional forces and the EFF did win but they won by drowning Zeon in a tide of EFF's troops marching over their own dead Warhammer Imperial Guard Style.

Ok, I'm exaggerating a little bit but the Type-61 tank had "Kill Me" written all over it when the Zaku-II was still new.

Like I said earlier in the thread, combat aircraft will remain viable until we mass produce flying and/or transforming Mobile Suits.

Transport aircraft will won't be obsoleted until Anti-Grav becomes cheep enough to mass produce.

Gundam UC has two types of giant aircraft.

1. The Gaw Attack Carrier; it pulls double duty as strategic bomber and transport. It can carry 6 OYW-era Mobile Suits, or twice that number of tanks or jet fighters, or half & half.

Build Fighters Episode 11 has a good look.

2. The Garuda class flying fortress. An enormous flying carrier that can go into the upper reaches of the atmosphere.

Unicorn Episode 14 has a good look.

No the EFF didn't just win by throwing bodies at Zeon. They won because they used a combined arms doctrine to overwhelm the Zeon MS forces with superior firepower. They had numbers but the truth is they were simply better equipped and better prepared for that kind of large scale offensive. And like I told you earlier as well we have flying MS already and transformation MS are not only a major waste aside from prototypes like the Zeta and ZZ Gundam they are far weaker overall. This is even true in the Macross series the Variable Fighter and other transforming mech/fighters were weaker than the non-transforming Destroid mechas that had better armor and stronger weapons.

They won because Amuro found out the EFF general in charge of Operation Odessa's reserves had sold out to Zeon. The "combined arms doctrine" consisted of arresting the traitor and throwing the previously idle forces into Zeon's flank. Hardly Rommel or Patton grade genius.

Yes I am aware of the traitor. And no they didn't just throw more troops at the problem. Due to the limited scope of the show you don't ever see the full extent of the operation. Because if all that was needed to win was throwing bodies at the problem the EFF could have done that at any point because they outnumbered Zeon forces by a huge margin. The EFF forces numbered 150 million during the war and that was after they took the losses in the opening battles of the war. And I am not saying that they used genius tactics Zeon didn't use any modern tactic and only relied on their MS to win them the war and we see how well that turned out. As for the tactics they would have used considering the General Revil was in overall command and that man is known as a great military leader I am going to say they did use effective tactics and strategy or else they would have not made it nearly that long in the war to begin with. I am going to guess that you are aware of what combine arms actually is. Your arguments for your variable/transformation MS and that all other forms of non-mobile weapons forces are useless means you either don't understand how a battle would play out in reality or you just want to ignore it for the sake of what you think is a cool concept. While it is a cool concept it is at its core flawed since a transforming mech will never be as good as a dedicated mech instead.

So with the next-gen of MS in development, we might get the Pale Rider sans the HADES system which should make it more producible and useable for the rest of the EFF pilots. We also should start getting the variants/upgraded versions of the GM line like the GM Sniper II, GM Custom, GM Quel, Powered GM and the Ground versions of these MS when we take that action for ground MS development.

I mean you're not entirely wrong, but the correct answer there would just have been to upgrade the damn things.

Well, they couldn't do it with the technology they had at the time, but we absolutely can make a tank with a beam turret or a railgun.

Well, Type-61 had no idea or doctrine to fight Zaku at the start. While Zakus were prepared to chomp Type-61s. That was somewhat fixed approaching Odessa

Once we get the refined beam weapons it might be possible to add a beam weapon to a tank. Railguns on the other hand will only be possible on super heavy tanks. They are too big and power intensive to be used on anything smaller. With the new generators we are making powering both kinds of weapons is possible but they need more work before it is practical.

I suspect beam weapons will be something of an equalizer against MS, since it creates a weapon able to kill most MS in one shot that can be mounted on smaller platforms.

That was in Canon sure; just compare how much armor the Jegan had to the Dom, armor was pointless so get rid of it. And by Victory Gundam armor had been omitted entirely, Mobile Suits could fuck each other up with head vulcans.

Electromagnetic Conversion Armor (ECA) throws that dynamic out the window. It triples armor effectiveness while adding mild engergy-weapon dispersion, in layman's terms aircraft duralumin becomes as strong as tank armor and Mobile Suits can no-longer one-shot each other with beam weapons.

Beam Weapons are still among the most powerful weapons that Mobile Suits can carry but ECA means kinetic weapons aren't obsoleted anymore. Kinetic Weapons can still be used to hose down an enemy MS and drain their ECA's battery.

The combination of new materials, anti-beam/energy coating, ECA, and I-fields make the defensive measures we have extremely powerful.

It is also Energy Conversion Armor. And like I told you before it is not battery powered. It recharges at a certain rate and is powered directly from the Reactors.
