Mathilde rolled a crit on Branarhune and needs a sneaky-type trainer so she doesn't have to reinvent the art of going from zero to murder as innocently as possible.

Alas, the dice serve the purpose of keeping me in check. Really off-the-wall things are fun to write but can't be thrown in constantly or disbelief stops being quite so suspended.
I don't think maintaining suspension of disbelief is something you have to worry about anymore. I think we'll accept anything at this point.
Although, that said, the dice does help to make it more "authentic".

I'm with Boney on this. Keeping the gas pedal floored is exciting only for a little while. Knowing that when we get an insane curveball thrown at us it's the result of something other than author whimsy keeps things engaging and furthers a sense of us all being along for the ride together.

Besides, if bribery/pleading works once, then for every important (and a lot that aren't) roll, you'll have some contigent of the thread bothering Boney with bribery/pleading. Which is just going to be really annoying, especically since a small part of DL is still larger than the total audience of a lot of other quests.
