Fair enough, though to be honest once we have her under our tutelage I will probably be suggesting we turn her a dragonbone staff. :V
"What were we... oh, yes. It is my pleasant duty to inform you that the Grey College has seen fit to bestow upon you the rank of Magister, along with all responsibilities and privileges thereof." He nods to his staff. "We used to give a staff to commemorate, but the previous Turner passed away and none have shown the ability and inclination to take it up. So I'm afraid all I can offer you to commemorate the occasion is my congratulations."

You stand there silent for a moment, taken aback by the abruptness. "I was expecting something more," you admit.

We should give her the staff once she becomes magister.

I don't want to coddle her too much.
Remember how Panoramia had never had a serious miscast, and needed to be reminded of how dangerous things can be?

Giving her a dwarf made grounding rod early is like that.
She's got wealth, a supportive family, the patronage of a lord magister and a safe(ish) career waiting for her.

I just hope Wilhelmina didn't tell Eike she expects her to be done with the opening course in 3 years, Eike certainly doesn't need the pressure.

...she did, didn't she.

Skinks like all lizardmen are immortal, it is the same Beer Holder unless some daemon or skaven killed him
Or a Druchii on a raid, or a dwarf looking to avenge a grudge, or a human looking for treasure, or another Lizardman in one of their thankfully few intraspecies clashes.

Point is that there are a lot of things that can kill a Skink and there's a reason we don't have a specific unit denoting century or millenium old ones like we do Saurus.

Now now, there's a decent chance that Wilhemina just said something like "I hope you'll finish in 3 years" and Eike extrapolated from there.

I don't think it was ever explicit that Skinks don't die of old age like it was for Saurus? Its in every Saurus and Slann army book entry but I've never seen it for Skinks. In fact Tetto'Eko is explicitly mentioned to be decrepid and at the end of his life span while also explicitly being quite young compared to any Slann. Though no hard numbers unfortuneatly.

There is also Oxyotl who's literally Gods know how old.

Then again, Oxyotl is not quite what you'd call a regular example.

EDIT: Also Tehehauin who's a few millenia old, at least according to the timeline I found on the wiki

Eike'll have more than enough attention on her already without getting expensive stuff from Mathilde. I'd only support such an action if we're committed to taking her as an apprentice. Which, I am, but the thread at large may not be.
Only one thing for it, we get every Apprentice a grounding rod!

Good ol' DoomLizard!

Poor Wilhelmina, I wish Mathilde just hug her, knowing that your child having magic is just one of those life changing event for good or ill.
We should go drinking with Wilhelmina at some point to help her vent over this, felt like we're Wilhelmina only friend at this point.

Eh... I care more about her safety than about any formality, a staff will help her live to see magister.
Ehh. A journey can be pretty safe too. Even Mathilde, who was thrown in the deep end, would've been mostly safe if she didn't misread spymaster as master spy and then decided she was the James Bond type of master spy. Eike's journey will probably have something to do with the EIC, and bigger magic isn't the most useful thing there.

I think the best thing for her safety would be to teach her the shadow hose, aka Mathilde's mastery variant of shadow horse. It means she can run away from nearly any fight, and makes her damn near impossible to intercept and ambush (because she doesn't need to stick to roads). Plus, that variant of the spell is probably the single most useful and effective thing Eike could get from her magic in her role as EIC boss (maybe some high level celestial precog could compete, but that's much easier to hire. There's no way to hire the ability to really quickly be where the problem is at any time, or for that matter to cease being where the problem is).

Another really useful tool would be Mathilde's high level of windsight, but it would counting chickens to be sure we can get her there before she becomes a journeymanling.

So now that we know for sure Eike is going to be a wizard I would like to seriously put forth the notion of getting her a dwarf made runic grounding rod. Dwarfs are better at that kind of brute force manipulation of magic than wizards. At the same time that is not some Kraag-worthy piece of runecraft so we can just buy it for money (being that we are a dwarf) and gift it on.

Eike probably is not going to need something that heavy duty as a junior apprentice but in the 0.1% of cases when she does she will really need it, and we have seen her luck runs to extremes in one direction already.

Just as soon as she is ours specifically, I would one hundred percent support not only getting the Grounding rod—even if it comes off as spoiling, teaching her proper safety measure first is fucking important—but also turn her the staff, and maybe even spend that KaK boon we have to get something similar to the Belt made or something. Because it's a really good thing to have.
We should give her the staff once she becomes magister.
Pan pan had one as a Journeyman, so it's not like there's a formal requirement. I want Eike to have as many advantages as early on as possible so she doesn't risk exploding into daemons.
