A talisman that's completely useless against the forms of magic that are most likely to be used to ruin someone's day with?

How ass-backwards is that? It's at it's best against legitimate magic users--but not the most dangerous legitimate magic users.
I figure it's either a thing because it's somehow easier for them to create anti-magic against "uncombined" winds or because they're high and dark magic users and they don't want talismans effective against them floating around.
The second has obvious downsides in terms of it being actually useful, since Chaos cultists are still gonna be able to bypass the protections, but if you have to choose between your minions being protected against Chaos cultists and you being able to put down rebellions easily, there's some obvious incentive to be callous.

Isn't that likely because of the widespread Tzeentch worship going on there?

I mean, I doubt it's entirely unrelated, but frankly in-setting the knowledge of magic that the Colleges have is exceedingly limited - I wouldn't be surprised if the Cathayan paradigm touches on some entirely true principles that Teclis simply left out of the curriculum because he made the executive decision to focus on mono-wind casting instead of Qhaysh and Dhar.

And indeed given that Qhaysh and Dhar are both about combining multiple winds, albeit "harmoniously" and "chaotically", I'd be surprised if there weren't certain similarities there on some level.

Yes and we are currently just funneling aetheric vitae out of a snek.

We need to study vitae more, get a better source of vitae, figure out how to make vitae solid, then we have a replacement for warpstone for the Weber Gun!

I think Vitae is far too useful as a spell-casting and rune aid to do the equivalent of stuffing it down the barrel of a gun and firing it, maybe if we figure out how to get more of it.

[X] Send it to the Colleges as a potentially useful trinket

*sigh*

Waste of a perfectly good AP, but that's fair, not every curiosity can be useful.
Could not have known beforehand. Happens. Shrugs

I imagine people who find themselves fighting Bright mages and priests more often than elves and vampires prefer to have protection against that.
I meant out of the list of people that was suggested to us, sorry. Because someone who has that can't be healed or blessed or... (unless dark magic is involved somehow) so, not useful to those who we would like to be protected.

Yeah, that's what I figure it is. "It's a protective talisman against possible rebellions from your subordinate casters." A weak Dark Magic caster you can kick the shit out of the usual way, but if your upper class are using High and Dark Magic respectively thanks to their bullshit Dragon Blood letting them pull shit humans aren't usually supposed to be able to pull, then you don't want to block out your own capacity to use magic.

So yeah, that seems to feel about right. Cathay is more interested in talismans to help suppress rebellions than they are to actually deal with their peers, because they've got no significant rival powers between "Chaos is generally disinterested in applying regular pressure outside of the Old World" and their own bullshit dragon blood letting them dodge the usual consequences of using Dark Magic while allowing them to use High Magic.

[X] Gift it to someone as a protective talisman
-[X] Elector Countess Roswita van Hal

It would be great if we expected a fight against Bretonnia or Kislev. Hmm, @BoneyM, does it protect against Waagh magic? From the lectures, that's a combination of divine and arcane, so it might fall under the stuff this thing protects from.

There's also another valid use: Fucking With Elves. Especially if we can give it to Wolf without shutting down the mind link.

Yeah, only real downside to the gem is that you can't give it to a mono-wind or divine caster unless you're willing to take their powers away for the duration.

And unfortunately, the ones it'd work best on are also our own natural allies, so it's not really valuable to keep for ourselves or hand to one of our own allies.

Pretty much just curiosity level--it'd be useful for the right person in the right place, but for our own purposes it's a mediocre treasure.

That's a valuable niche at least. Makes sense too, because Cathay would still have headaches from greenskins even if they don't tend to get the god tier monsters who keep getting pulled into the Old World.

A talisman that doesn't work against dark magic? Let's give it to the college, they might be useful for some experiment or enchantment. Giving it to Rosala is almost useless because it's ineffective against dhar and necromancy, the true dangers for her.

[X] Keep it in case it comes in useful later

Don't give it to Mandred since it'll remove the possibility of him getting blessed by Ranald.

This seems like the sort of thing a future friendly Elf might find to be a useful gift. No effect on High (or Dark) Magic, yet repellent to individual Winds.

Maybe they could use it as a focus or something, for training in High Magic. Lets the spell through if you get it right, disrupts it if the Wind balance is off and you're going to screw it up. If you're creating Dhar you're already hosed, do better next time if you haven't already melted your head.
