Returning to Wurtbad is not necessarily remaining on as Spymistress - possibly even if you want to remain Spymistress. The incoming EC might prefer someone they know, or they might have different ideas regarding the trustworthiness of wizards.
Would Mathilde remain an advisor of some sort, or is the outcome entirely up to the dice rolls that determine the new EC's traits, and stats?

I think it would do us good to spend some time soul searching. And not (necessarily) in the necromancy sort of way.

Honestly, I would be 1,000% okay if we stayed around Wurtbad even if we're not an advisor anymore.

I mean, Ranald literally gave us a secret underground palace, and we've proven our loyalty in every way that matters. Sticking around here is a good idea regardless--at worst, we just have more free time and need to come up with a better source of income.

That being said? We're still a large shareholder in the big trade company, that's likely enough to get enough disposable income even if we lose our official position.

While I mull over the vote, I wish to articulate something that occured to me after Mathilde made an oathstone of Van Hal; a low level Ulgu spell is 'clone image' which means that in theory Mathilde could create a half dozen images of herself while fighting. The idea of combining illusions with swordplay isn't a new one, but I wonder if it could become a way for Mathilde to punch her way into a higher weightclass than her spellcraft or swordsmanship alone would warrant.
Oh, hey, the spells described here are more extensive than those on our existing spellbook, I wonder what-
Confound Foe - This illusion can be cast by an illusionist who has suffered combat damage. It can be cast even if the caster has been killed, so it is a somewhat exceptional spell. The spell has the effect of negating all damage sustained over a select amount of time, just as if it didn't really happen - because it didn't!
Why is "get killed and then pop back from death while claiming that you never actually died, it was all a lie" not on our spell list, and what do we need to do to get it there?

Well, 'EIC Shareholder' should start meaning something now that it can be reconfigured to profit, right? And if we take the 'use intelligence aparatus to give EIC a leg up in market prices' option that should help both the intelligence community and the trade cartel the Grand County has a 28% share in.

OTOH, it doesn't get much higher than Spymaster of an entire province of the Empire.

Unless you are made Elector Count, which we can't be because magic, as we've been shown, is clearly Bad.

Heck, remember that land we own? Lets make ANOTHER castle, maybe even make it partially underground too.
Nah, castles are expensive.

Let's just do a fortified mansion that's mostly underground. We are a wizard, we can get away with a lotta eccentricities. Plus, at least we're not a trader.

Don't we still owe money to Stirland? This might become an issue when the new Elector Count comes to office, since we don't actually know or understand what type of loan contract we took to buy those EIC shares.

We owe money to the Eastern Imperial Company, which we're paying off with the money we earn from the Eastern Imperial Company, because modern finance is its own kind of magic bullshit. Mathilde possibly thinks its a ninth Wind or something. :V

Pretty sure the loan was given to us by Stirland and all our EIC income is going directly to Stirland loan repayments. We don't owe money to the EIC, we owe money to the Stirland treasury.

Wilhelmina has offered you an interest-free loan from the Stirlandian Treasury to cover it, and promises that unless something goes terribly wrong, the dividends will more than pay for it.

Ah, not quite. The buy-in to the company was 1000g. We got the money by taking a loan from the province and are currently paying it off from the dividends we receive from the Company.

I personally can't stomach the fear that the Van Hall's family will fall apart just like the previous Counts of Stirland, being made a Count again was a second chance for them.

In regards to remaining spymaster it might very well come down to the fact that if the new EC is someone besides a Van Hal the other ECs might view Mathilde as a little bit too successful.

That comes with owing a great deal of money to Stirland it was 1000g iirc, and without being spymaster of Stirland Mathilde will need to be careful about not amassing wealth due to no longer having that cover when handling money.

Entirely up to the incoming incumbent, who you know absolutely nothing of.

Because they're from a much older version of the RPG from before they nailed down balance and lore. Their absence isn't an oversight, it's deliberate.

We can always slack on our duties as a spymaster (we have Julia and Jack to cover us anyway) but we've got way too many useful resources to just abandon them and go wandering. We have our magic juice that needs to be examined in our new lab. The griomoire of super evil magic that we want to read. The magic death swords we still haven't gotten around to auctioning off for personal profit or examining. And most important of all we recently got the watch a bunch of puppies, who doesn't like puppies?

On the other hand... We'll be going back to Stirland.

This is a place so crappy that they let their Elector Count die due to lack of medical care and their best (and apparently only) priest was capable of flubbing 'stabilize person'.

I'm starting to suspect the only reason we aren't overrun with Skaven and Chaos cults is because when anyone suggests invading Stirland they all go, "Urggh Stirland, let's invade Ostland instead." We can make it a marketing slogan about the province's safety though. Stirland, so crappy even Chaos won't touch it.

Qhaysh Juice + Liber Mortis = fun

Time to deal with the fallout of our Elector Count dying. Wilhelmina and Anton are not going to like this and considering we're most likely going to beat the runners back, we're going to be the one to break the news to them.
