She seemed awfully young for marriage and a family when she first took up the runefang. And afterwards, the demands and secrecy for the lifestyle of a witch hunter (and was she even one or just being watched over by one?) and an elector countess are completely different. The highest rank of nobility should have their children seen. If for no other reason that when they die, their underlings are actually willing to accept this person saying they're the new boss.
She is in her mid thirties now so I would not say young.

You know what? Sure. I've added another category for 'purely aesthetic but obviously magic in origin' Arcane Mark effects, and leave up to the reader whether they would or wouldn't be a problem.
While these may be a minor impediment to Manfred diplomatically, 'very obviously magical and not causing problems' is like, the ideal outcome from the College's perspective. "Why yes, the Elector Count does prefer to go barefoot - and everything's still going exactly as it should!"

There are not many legitimate reasons for a Witch Hunter to be in the Border Princes. Their authority doesn't really stretch outside the Empire. The biggest reason that comes to my mind is that they are tracking a fugitive.

And what makes that concerning is that most Witch Hunters would give up as soon as the fugitive crosses the border. So either this Witch Hunter is unusually dedicated to their job—which would be interesting by itself—or the fugitive in question is one that can not be left to their own devices.
I mean, sure, their legal authority doesn't technically exist outside of the Empire. But it would absolutely apply to Gretel, because she's a Collegiate Wizard, to whom the laws of the Empire always apply. Also, I suspect you're wrong about Witch Hutners just giving up when people leave the Empire's borders. i'd guess that generally they co-operate with local equivalents (but ehre atre none in the Border Princes) but as the kind of people Witch hunters go after are usually cults, dhar wielders and chaos worshippers, letting them escape just because they left the country seems wildly reckless. I'd apply that to most of the people they hunt, not just a handful of extra dangerous ones (that is, the people it's safe to let go are far less numerous than the ones that need to be hunted down ASAP).

When it comes to the list of arcane marks some pages back, I find myself wondering what controlling a Bright mark would look like.

Thus far, we've only to still an arcane mark, and only briefly.

But... given the associations of Aqshy with passion, I do wonder if one could instead channel the Bright Temper marks away from the usual sort of temper, and instead into going full Gomez Addams level passionate about things.

Grey is really, really unpopular as a choice for him with the thread. It's possible there's a silent majority secretly very enthusiastic about having another apprentice to the exclusion of all other considerations. But that literally nobody has come out to front that view and instead it's floating near the bottom of every list put forward says it's unlikely to be something we need to worry about unless the kid is unbelievably charming on his introductory scene this coming social or his Doom is literally "You will die young unless you join the Grey college".
I'm fully behind the idea of him being a Grey, but have previously avoided posting to that effect because I didn't feel like everyone and their dog jumping down my throat to demand that I justify my preference.

Wait what's wrong with Amethyst? The one other wizard noble we know of is an Amethyst.
Amethysts are supposed to give up any inheritance. The other wizard noble is skirting up to the edge of things because she didn't inherit, just conquered it directly herself (notably, while completely outside the empire) not running straight over which Mandred would be.

Well, there is Elspeth at least in Total War, but she seems to be the exception. It would probably take Manfred his entire life just to get to her level.
It's kinda like what Johann said so long ago.
"Got the arms done while I was in Altdorf," he tells you in between raids. "Last outside part I had left, except for the head, which, yeah. 'Don't gild your head until you can take on arbitrary amounts of hungry peasants' is what they say.
Just for Amethysts it's instead "Don't hold a public position of power while looking incredibly creepy until you can take on arbitrary amounts of frightened populations".

(Gretel cheated by going to the Border Princes where she immediately jumped to near the top of the curve in relative terms)

Elspeth is the leader of the Nuln faction in TWW because she's an actual fighter and had tabletop stats, but in the lore she very much is not the ruler of Nuln, that would be Elector-Countess Emmannuelle Von Liebwitz and Elspeth is just the creepy wizard looming over her shoulder.

Same thing as Tyrion and Finubar.

On the subject of the Witch hunter, I do hope that Mathilde gets to style on him/her with her stealth skills. Like sneak up on them and have them completely dead to rights before having a conversation.

Or better yet maybe figure out what they are investigating and then get all the info they are looking for before dropping it on their lap and kindly telling them to leave.

@Boney : It our work on our unnatural shadow worth a paper? It's not exactly revolutionary, but the fact that we had to experiment further after researching does suggest that it's worth writing about. Unnatural shadow is a common gray arcane mark and it will be interesting if it works the same with all other gray wizards. Only takes them about 5 minutes to test if studying their own shadow causes it to stand still.

Though the manifestations are typically broadly similar, exactly how one's soul interfaces with their Wind, the mutations that arise in extremis, and the relationship someone has with the Mark (and sometimes the relations between those Marks and their spells) are always going to be completely unique. So the products of studying it aren't really going to be publishable unless you manage to do something really neat with it.

So what you are saying is if we ask a follow gray wizard with unnatural shadow to study their shadow for 5 minutes and it stay still then it's a paper.

Ya know, I can't get over the particular fact we planted the tree nut into the center of the Karak. A karak that is moving massive amounts of energy through its waystones. Which the tree is probably feeding off of. I think the vast majority of the nuts that get planted do not get conditions that pristine.

There is a non zero chance that whatever Asrai whose job is to monitor the energy from the waystone network/or Oak of Ages is going to notice something is up.

So you're saying the Karak Oak has possibly experienced some kind of… Miracle Growth?
