I think we probably don't want to do horse trading here. We should just send him where we think he should go. For me, I'm currently leaning Gold. Gehenna seems unlikely to be blowing smoke when saying he has a great affinity for Elemental Chamon (the only Wind we've actually been told he's got a knack for other than maybe Ulgu), and Gold is pretty sweet for an Elector-Count on a practical level.

I'm less against Grey than I was before Mathilde's argument, and might be talked around to that as well. I'd prefer Jade to Bright, but neither talk about his magical proclivities, only politics and him being a good warrior, so I'm against them.

Generally it would be entirely reasonable to use this to extract a promise regarding Mandred's education.

My immediate first thought is that it would be very reasonable to argue for the Grey College to give Mandred some lessons on diplomacy and spycraft even if he isn't a member - they're the undisputed champions of those disciplines among the colleges.

That this is an opportunity for Mathilde to stick her oar in and help make sure the whole Ranald thing sticks can go unsaid. :V

Hmm, I feel like I'm leaning more towards either the Golds or the Jades. Mandred seems to have more natural affinity to Chamon, but the Jades' points about the political potential of him going Jade combined with the Order's efforts in Reikland intrigue me.
I agree that Jade seems the best, Reikland is the breadbasket of the empire, so a potential large-scale infrastructure project involving jade mages would be very beneficial for the whole Empire.

I am more worried that the Dranchenfels is stirring. Like we may want to rush reading the vampire material we have because the empire may need it.

I really do not think Mandred should be a grey. While I love the kid and the stories told to him he is not really subtle. He is Karl Franz so either gold or fire would be best for him.

Golds are the only ones who can safely wear armor for what it's worth, if he is going to spend a lot of time on the field sword in hand it is best that he does so in the best armor he can. Heck he could probably rustle up some dwarf plate given who he is.

He purses his lips, and the anger that flashes on his face does not seem directed at you. "I have assurances that there would be more willingness to bend for the heir to the Empire."
Well, I'm glad to know at least one authority figure was on Hubert's side for that. Maybe Mathilde throwing that one in their faces over such an important decision will get the celestials to eat a little crow.

that of the Clever Wizard who stole power from Gork and Mork so that it could be used to steal a Princess from the clutches of the Vampires. It doesn't take much embellishment to make it work, and his eyes go wide as he realizes that the 'Princess' is his very own mother.
And now he (thinks he) knows the reason why his mom is such close friends with the weird shadow lady.
Really liked the storytime, and especially that bit.

She then tells of Ranald and Ulric growing distant as Ranald tricks Ulric into doing what needed to be done with a series of bets and illusions. First, of Ulric being given a tankard that had concealed within it a portal to the Sea of Claws, and being bet that he could not drink it in one go, which lowered the water so that Mother Rhya's children could walk to the Old World. Second, of being bet that he could not lift a cat, which Ulric could not see was really the eldest and largest of the Dragon Ogres, which allowed Ranald to hide a terrible Daemon-Sword beneath the sleeping giant so that none could wield it. And third, of being bet he could not win a wrestling match against an old woman, who Ulric could not see was actually Dread Morr, his father's most trusted advisor, which forced King Death to release a fraction of his hold on mortal life, allowing Shallya to steal away some of His inevitability and allowing for the possibility of death to be forestalled by medicines and blessings.
But no mention of the eating contest with Aqshy that Ranald was involved with.

For shame, Gabriella, for shame.

I'm more willing to accept a Grey Mandred after Mathilde's argument, and I don't think it would be detrimental to him. The only real downside for the Greys is their reputation, and I think even that can be got over. Really I just think we shouldn't dismiss the possibility out of hand.

Hmmm. I know I said I was against horse trading, but I might make an exception for this. Getting him diplomacy and spycraft instruction from the Grey Order has some interesting possibilities even if he winds up a Gold Magister or whatever.

It's on the list, certainly. I even put it second, right behind Gold. Gold has a really nice balance of factors recommending it, though.

Being 'given a sword' in exchange for your generosity has a very different connotation as a feudal lord than it does as a random guy. Like, as a random person, that probably means being stabbed even without the Morr allusion...as a feudal lord, it could mean being given someone's service. Probably someone poor if all they have are tuppence and their sword.
Of course if we're getting metaphorical we should also consider how the two penny grudge could tie into this.

[ ] Bright, for (specify what)
The boy's a warrior. He has high martial and prowess baseline, and not taking advantage would be criminal.

But he's also a future Emperor. The other side of the coin is that if he's not going to be good at intellectual pursuits, he will need companions who are and the diplomacy to keep them around. Which is what I want to mandate.

Educate Mandred as a Bright Wizard, but ensure he can socialize outside the one college. They can make a Martial Lord out of him, but he needs to be nurtured into the role of a Guardian of the People by being exposed to and forming genuine relationships with other, more intellectual personalities.

Not just inundating him with what I can only assume is enough concentrated frat house energy to match the entirety of Miami during spring break 30 times over.

Mathilde continues to have no idea what children are, I see. Lol, I wonder if she knows she's blowing up her mysterious wizard facade every time she speaks up about them?

- I'm away from my PC at the moment, and sorting out the books on a laptop would be an enormous pain, so the payday for the Ithilmar deal will be resolved in a future update.
...Dang man, keeping me in suspense like that? Oof.

Well, whenever it's ready. Perhaps we can bargain for more books in the meantime. :V

He nods to his left, making it clear that arguments will be made by the order of the Wheel of Magic, which is probably the only way to do it that wouldn't immediately start a magic.

Mathys own reasons for grey do make them a solid choice. I think. The brights also convinced through simply bringing gorman, they know there is more then fireballs and send their best for that.

Gehenna and Haruspex Stern seem to be getting along very well - unusual for a Gold and Celestial, but less so for two Battle Wizards with an affinity for the Elemental.
Between this and his previous anger, I think Stern might've been Hubert's master.

I'm probably gong to be busy/sleeping for most of the discussion period, but I'm going to list why I think he should go to the Jades while I have the chance.

1. The arguments stated in the update - Reiklands shunt, magical infrastructure and prospective breadbasket status offer extremely unique opportunities as a ruler he frankly wouldn't have anywhere else. Uniquely and straightforwardly virtuous, as well.

2. He would swing the Jades away from the hardcore druidic traditionalists - hard to argue men shouldn't be doing green magic with the face of wizardkind in your lecture halls, and every wizard in the Empire looking real hard at your lecture halls.

3. Popularity with the common people - the Jades, being the wizards who do food and medical miracles, are some of the most widely accepted wizards in existence, especially in the northern provinces where they work extremely closely with the cults of Taal and Rhya. A good magical and diplomatic reputation is essential for someone who will be the face of, essentially, a human rights movement.

4. This is debatable, but personally - in terms of mindset we're encouraging - I would much prefer compassion and growth to be foremost in a rulers mind, rather than intense passion or overwhelming logic.

5. Popularity with the troops - being known as the leader who directly saves his men's lives, on their deathbeds and off, would be invaluable.

6. As @Critian Caceorte points out, and I can't believe I missed this - the Jade wind would also improve his chances of, well, living. Spending time on the battlefield or otherwise, anyone would be much, much safer when they can regenerate from otherwise fatal blows.

The Brights, who have a reputation as magical artillery and only one or two spells involving leadership, would be an autopick if they were more Indic, but they're just not. They're my second choice, but only because it offers few concrete disadvantages. He would be the perfectly spherical in a vacuum Wizard Count Fighty McFightman.

The Golds are a no go for one reason imo- Feldmenn being a politician is seen as both notable and indicative of not going far into his wind. Mandred has to be a politician. If we sent Mandred to the Golds, we would be accepting both him not being taught the normal way, and him never going very far with his wind.

I'd really like to just stop this line of thinking altogether. Mandred may yet become a great scholar. Mathilde originally had Martial 6, but I don't think anyone would say she's not an excellent warrior by this point, and whatever College he goes to, instilling Learning will be on the agenda. We can argue which College is best, and I have strong opinions, but let's not assume he's gonna have low Learning all his life or something.

This goes both ways. The internal political issues of the jades could result in resentment towards Mandred, resentment that he's ill equipped to notice or deal with.

Be careful of assuming he can be our solution to an unrelated problem, because the unrelated problem gets to be a problem right back.
