Checked the diceroller on a whim, turns out there are some new rolls.
Mandred got his stats in honour of his tenth birthday. Decent Diplomacy and Martial, that's good for a future ruler. Slightly above average Stewardship, also good for a ruler. Below average learning, kind of bad for a Wizard, below average intrigue, extra bad for a Grey Wizard (not that I think Mandred should have been a Grey Wizard in any case) and arguably bad for a secret Ranaldite. Speaking of which, below average piety, which is worse than it seems because it's actually a 4d6 roll - Mandred had the potential to have a pretty high Piety, but it was not to be. Looks like his secret Godmother has her work cut out for her.
I guess he really does like knights.

5/19 dice came out as 1s. Less than 20% of possible rolls end up that badly. Mandred Quest seems to have a Snake Eyes meme instead of a Boxcars one

High martial and diplo, average learning, not bad for a ruler, he can largely outsource most stats, but personal charisma and military prowess are important in a society like Empire.

These are, I suppose, just his base stats, without any traits? If so, it's not the end of the world. The fluff behind these scores will be interesting though. I imagine the tug of war over him between Sigmar and Ranald might be contributory to the low piety, for example.

Right, so that's a mess, glad it's not our job to fix it. A low learning wizard increases the odds of him exploding during training and low piety increases the odds of falling to Chaos. Also low intrigue makes him a bad Ranaldite in particular.

There are statistical ways this kid could be worse but conceptually he is terrible as a wizard even as he is pretty decent as a future ruler. Is it too late to strap some of those dampeners to him?

To be fair, these are his initial stats. Mathilde started with, what, 9 diplomacy and 6 martial? And look at her now.
And for an Elector Count and potential Emperor diplomacy is arguably the most important stat. You can't excel at everything, and 14 martial and 13 diplo are pretty good. And even his lower stats are below average, but not terrible - nothing a decent education can't fix.

In comparison:
Mandred's stats are 13D-14M-11S-8I-7L-10P for a total of 63 points
Mathilde's original stats were, IIRC, 9D-6M-10S-13I-13L-15P for a total of 66 points
An average person's, assuming perfectly average rolls of 3 dice = 10.5 points, would get 63 points in total as well

Also, 'Karl Franz but also a Wizard' sounds dope

So he just needs to spend the next two decades in life or death learning/piety tests and not die or worse and then he will be a prodigy. Mathilde isn't a good standard for anyone to follow
Getting stats from 7 to 10+ is considerably easier than that.
Maybe spoiler this? Gives away the subject of discussion. Aaaaactually nevermind, enough people slipped here and there a bit. Prolly pointless now.

True but the objective isn't to become Stirland competent he is going to be a target for a lot of unpleasant things and right now he is a very, very soft target. Mandred will be in more danger than Journeywoman Weber in many ways. Heck, right now he is in possession of a secret that could seriously damage the succession and wellbeing of his father the Emperor, namely that his mother is a Ranaldite... and he has 8 base intrigue.

Becoming a wizard isn't like becoming a sanctioned psyker.

Especially since he'll get all the help the Emperor and the Colleges can get him. It's not like he's your random peasant kid, everyone is really invested in him doing well. As seen by how, while your average Wizard is given some advice by whoever found them and left to choose whichever College they thinks suits them most, Mandred is going to get eight high ranking Wizards and Wizard Lords - possibly including the Supreme Patriarch himself - debating about which one is better for him.

Van Hal had terrible Diplomacy, Stewardship and Intrigue and middling Piety (though that was our fault, and he would probably have fixed it eventually). Yet he was an amazing Witch Hunter and a good Elector Count.

Mandred will manage, I'm certain. Especially since he's ten right now. He's got the time, and will have the resources, to improve.

Well ya know there is a whole college dedicated to teaching intrigue he could attend if that's an issue.

Edit:
Also I wonder if Mathilde could help with his piety, right now he's presumably been taught the more orthodox Ranaldian beliefs of his mother but if he hasn't gelled with that maybe Mathildes version of viewing Ranald as an annoying friend will work for him

I like the stats a lot, and the low learning is at least interesting, but man that piety stings. I'm sorry Ranald, I guess your big gambles sometimes do turn up snake eyes...

It also entirely removes the Lights from consideration in my eyes. They used to be my front runners, but low learning in the most difficult to master college, low piety in the Chaos focused college, not to mention it would probably massacre any half formed loyalty to Ranald he still had...

Celestials seem the best pick to me now, especially on a Karl Franz type.

Sure and it is very unfair to judge him by those standards, sadly the monsters out there are no respecters of childhoods and just being a wizard introduces unique weaknesses and temptations that other children do not face. Seriously he has below average stats he needs to not explode, not give in to temptation and not blab damaging secrets
Consider his mother, his father, and a bunch of Lord Magisters interested in his well-being.
