NGL I am a bit wary of becoming Mandred's mentor, because teacher of a Reikland's prince is a very...full... Fullest time sort of a job, imo.

Everything gonna spin around him like around center of a tornado.
Not much need to worry about that, given the thread consensus (heh) so far has been to keep him away from the Grey College.

Unless of course... the recent reveal of his stats invites a sentiment of "fine, I'll do it myself" with regards to educating him. Still seems unlikely though.

...and? Are you suggesting that Hubert would be better off if he hadn't been a wizard, dampened his gift and gone into the military? Because if so, I encourage you to reread the updates from 2020 where we counseled him and then saw how he reacted over the next few years. Our boy loves flying and loves throwing lightning bolts. He's incredibly happy as what he is. The theme of our interactions with him, and to a lesser extent every one of the K8P wizards, is that there is no one right way to do it: the standard career tracks and stereotypes are common, but not universal.

If our godson hates magic, then sure, don't make him. If our godson sees magic, not as an end in itself to be loved and pursued, but as a tool he can use to enhance his real passions like martial glory... that's 100% valid!

I think Hubert would have been considerably happier if he had not turned out to be a wizard yes, he certainly would not have been pining for flight since that would not even have been on his radar. Even though he eventually found peace and some measure of acceptance that does not mean that the twofold social isolation and alienation that drove him to the edge of the civilized world was inherently worthwhile. It was pure luck that he was even able to find that niche at all and there is no guarantee Mandred would be able to find one with the comparably greater pressures of being the heir of Reikland.

The question at hand isn't about if he hates or loves magic, as he would not have the experience of magic, but about if he wants the grueling mental trials that come with mastering magic, the risks to mind body and soul that journey involves, whether he is willing to deal with the distrust of wizards endemic to the Empire for which he will become a lightning rod by virtue of his position.

If he doesn't become a Grey then I doubt she'll become his Master, but considering this is, again, a future Elector Count and possible future Emperor, I wouldn't be surprised if he's given lessons on 'universal' subjects by whoever is best at that in the whole Eight Colleges, and I can think of a few things that Mathilde could teach him.

Even if Mandred joins the Greys we'd have another several years before he moves from Baby Apprentice who isn't allowed out of a monowind environment to Workplace Tailing Apprentice like Eike.
And just like Eike, there would probably be multiple other LM's who'd be willing and interested in taking on Mandred.

Yeah, the fear is that merely means Mathilde moving into that very monowind environment to be near Mandred, instead of getting a couple more years of relative freedom.

Tutor and mentor to the most important child in the empire: Fullest Time job. Altho... No, Boney prolly would not run it like that.

I don't think anyone would suggest that.
And I mean anyone... in universe or out of it.

LM's like Mathilde are extremely valuable. The idea that she quits the incredibly important dual diplomatic/research she's doing in Laurelorn to return to Altdorf to teach magic 101 to 1 specific student is ludicrous. To say nothing of the fact that she'd probably do a worse job of it than the previously existing and already experienced staff who have been running those lessons for decades.

RE:Miscasts specifically

Items that more or less completely solve up-to-and-including-Battle Magic-tier fuck-ups are available from both Colleges and Dwarfs.

A lot of people with a lot of resources are very invested into making sure that This Particular Wizard does not explode.

Ever.

Small note here, grounding rods give a bonus against miscasts. At no point was any grounding rod, imperial or dwarf sold to us as 'more or less completely solve up-to-and-including-Battle Magic-tier fuck-ups'.

I wouldn't worry too much. Even when we were offered the 'bodyguard Mandred' job it was just as a cover for being his (and his mom's) political troubleshooter to ease his way into becoming Emperor.

Teaching someone How To Wizard or How To Prince is not really Mathilde's strength and everyone knows it.

I'd like to point out that even if dampeners were a reasonable reaction (they're not), the time to suggest them was when the only ones who knew about his magic were Mathilde and Heidi.

Not when the colleges are holding a meeting to fight over who gets to take him.

Hey, Mathilde has been a fantastic teacher for Eike. And she was good with the ducklings as well.

I don't actually want Mandred as an apprentice, mind, but teaching does actually seem to be a strength of her's.

Magic is a massive asset for a ruler. He's not going to get the choice to be surpressed, whether he'd want it or not.

Edit: I stand corrected.

Not if they decide he is more of a liability than an asset. I mean for the sake of argument say Mandred's reaction to being told he is a wizard is to scream that he does not want to be one. Do you think anyone is going to want him then?

That is an intentionally extreme example, but there probably exists a level of hesitation where most of the people in that panel will think 'best not to risk it'.

It's true, Mandred could benefit greatly from being able to summon an army nobody expects...

That's not how grounding rods were presented in previous discussions I was present at.

That aside, remember how Belt allowed Mathilde to kinda swat aside that Shyish miscast?

What? No, that was something she did by rolling high on managing the miscast after learning the lessons of the Liber Mortis, it was not an automatic quality of the belt. Mathilde with belt and grounding rod is fully capable of miscasting and has done so.

You are misreading the post; IDK from where you are deriving "automatic." Same for "incapable of miscasting."

Ah, wait, I get it. No, but "See the other wizard miscast, just stomp that out" is a capability granted by the belt. I certainly don't remember miscasting with the rod, though.

Oh if he hates is badly enough he is going to get the option. There is a term for 'unwilling wizard' and it's 'daemon bait', the question is more where the line it I'd say
Look, I know your thesis was that the slightly below average learning stat indicates a disinterest and not just the lack of talent but at this point you are arguing hypotheticals that would give you the result you're advocating for with zero connection to or support from the actual evidence.

And on the substance of that core point I observe that if he was actually disinterested we probably wouldn't be talking about having a council at all, he would already have dampeners. People can be interested in things they're bad at, and as others have pointed out Mandred is not necessarily bad at this for his age.

More or less completely is far more than either belt or grounding rod can do as seen by the fact that Mathile who is very careful about miscasts has miscast while in the possession of both.
