The arguments that the Hedgewise would somehow be useless if recruited are ridiculous. Not only have they been suggested as likely recruitment partners since the beginning of the Waystone Project, but we very recently had a beautifully written scene where a Hedgewise used a scrying spell that was, essentially, a temporary Sevirscope spell. There is a story to be told here. It's absurd to reason, somehow, that the Hedgewise won't be interesting character(s) to have around in the project when they've both been signposted for all over the quest and what little we've seen of them defied Mathilde's understanding of magic directly to her face.

...If we're going to relitigate the Truth vs. Faith vote every single time using the Father side of the coin comes up, I don't expect us to ever actually use said coin side. Ever.

Er... I do not think so, a Seviroscpoe is magesight (without touching brain meats because we do not want to petrify Kragg's brain). This was far sight, a form of scrying that all sorts of other wizards can use.

and it tied now...

All those are great reasons why including them isn't political suicide, but that wasn't what I said it would be. That doesn't mean that someone won't raise a stink about it and that it won't be a headache to deal with.

As Marienburg recently demonstrated, people aren't rational actors. Being publicly close to the Empress also means you are in the splash zone for court politics, and I trust nobles to be lemmings if given a chance.

And that's not getting into the actually powerful enemies like Alric and the freaking chaos gods. They would just love using some useful idiot to cause strife.
At that point, why do like... anything important at all, though?

We are operating at way too high a scale at this point to not trod on any toes whatsoever, and the only way we can avoid it completely is by like... Not being involved with things like the Waystone Project. We can't refuse to do something just because it might trod on somebody's toes and they will be annoying about it. If we didn't want to do that we should've stayed a Journeywoman, and certainly not taken up the Waystone Project.

Every single faction we associate with the Waystone Project creates potential political enemies for us regardless. Honestly, the Hedgewise are less risky in that regard than many things we've already done for the Waystone Project. Hosting it in Laurelorn means we piss off Nordland, we played politics with the Light College and could've easily pissed off Alric or got other people suspecting we're playing political games rather than prioritizing the safety of the Empire, and I'm sure there's more I can't think off of the top of my head.

Whenever you try to be peaceful with someone, you piss off those who hate that person. This is the case whether you're dealing with the Hedgewise or not.

The issue is mostly what we had to sacrifice to get those hints, and what we have to sacrifice still to act on those hints rather than just sitting on it. At least for me.

The word "sacrifice" is a lot heavier than is strictly needed. What, exactly, are we sacrificing? We're exchanging two +20 bonuses for a chance to test our new artefact that could add a new faction to our international think tank for free. We're even doing it on a waystone action rather than on an independent action. We're not "sacrificing" anything to pursue this.

Since there's allegedly argument exhaustion going around, even though I've personally seen novel many novel takes and arguments, I'll try to go with the puzzle analogy.

Is Haletha likely to be a Daughter? There have been some great arguments and I'm convinced that yes, this is the case. Should we hang out with the Hedgewise because of this, or just on general principle? Absolutely, yes. Are the Hedgewise likely to have some obscure piece of knowledge or strange perspective that will fit that last missing piece of the puzzle? Yes, I can see that being plausible.

But they'll never be the architects of that puzzle, because that's just not what they do. Research inclined hedgefolk just go to the colleges. The Hedgewise are insular and traditionalist, which is about as far as you can get from innovative interdisciplinary research.

If Thorek and Hatalath get off on the wrong foot, then the presence of the Hedgewise can do nothing whatsoever to fix or circumvent that.

Gambler has no effect on d6s.
It does if you believe Ranald is real.

Er... I do not think so, a Seviroscpoe is magesight (without touching brain meats because we do not want to petrify Kragg's brain). This was far sight, a form of scrying that all sorts of other wizards can use.
The witch in Ostermark used a spell that showed things Mathilde could only normally see through magesight. Sure sounds like a Seviroscope to me.
Relevant part of that update:
"Tch. Colleges." She reaches into a bowl on the mantle and pulls out a fistful of ash, which she throws at the northern wall. The timbers shudder and begin to part, but instead of the village that should be beyond you find yourself looking with mundane senses at something you have only ever seen with Magesight. The life of the river and the forest beyond unfolds before you in overlaid energies, the soft, faint slow-souls of the trees and the darting energies of animals twinkling like dying embers. But beyond all of the mundane energies of forest life and the occasional flaring oddity that seems to sense your attention and dart out of the way, is a blazing sun of shadowed energies.
Bolding by me.

My objection here is that including the hedgewise creates a legal opening by technically being in breach of the articles.

It isn't about not making enemies, it's about not handing those enemies ammunition.

When you make statements that something is "ridiculous" due to reasons. I think it's fair to actually provide evidence of some of those reasons. I literally posted the exchange where the suggestion happened, and it was not particularly suggestive. If you have other strong evidence it would be nice to post them, rather than just blankedly dismissing everyone that disagrees with you as completely wrongheaded.

How is a seviroscope alternative going to help create a theory this turn? If it would be useful I would expect that to be when we're looking at starting to actually do active investigations, which if anything that seems like it argues much more strongly for my stance that we should add others once we have a better idea of what resources we might need in the future.

We are exchanging those +20s and whatever narrative bonus we could put on one of the, if not the single most important action on the project. In exchange for having a better in with the Hedgewise (we already have Kurtis's connections as an in, this just builds on it), which still gambles on them being willing to join for free or on the honor system rather than needing their price paid first.

I do believe the Hedgewise are worth bringing in, just not now in this particular set of circumstances.

Did you know that Hatalath is as illegal a mage as the Hedgewise? It's true. He does not use Divine Magic, and he is not Collegiate. That makes him illegal. We're working with him you know.

We're exchanging an option some think is best for another that they think is suboptimal. Not everyone is convinced that the Hedgewise would be useful, not everyone think it worth to recruit them if it means not using them on the Foundations.

It is not technically a breach of the Articles because we are not on Imperial soil, the same way we could have ignored finding out that Eike was a wizard because we did so outside the borders of the Empire. This is the law working as intended since you cannot have Imperial magisters going to Araby and clubbing Djinn binders over the head to bring back for training.

And he doesn't live in the empire, so that really doesn't matter. In fact he has the same stamp of "approved by a government" that everyone else in the project has at this point, which the empire respects for diplomatic reasons.

What enemies? Who has both the authority to care about the hedegwise, but also lacks any other means of attacking us? The templars? This is a wizard project, and we can get the Emperor to tell them to fuck off. Alric? He's in disgrace at the moment, and we can get Dragomas to tell him to fuck off. Nordland? Nobody trusts or likes Nordland at the moment, and we can get Middenland to tell them to fuck off. Middenland? They want their alliance with the Eonir to work. They are on our side by default.

Hmm... fair enough, that is seviroscope like. Though it should be noted we do not know if she did it without touching Mathilde's brain which is the big barrier on the way to a seviroscope.
True, although if she did touch Mathilde's brain, then she has to have been using Ulgu (no Dhar production), which means it would be at the least a good starting point that Mathilde could interact with, and invaluable to the Greys regardless.

So? We're talking about the project right? We're working with them for the project in Laurelorn, which as you said, isn't part of the Empire. It has diplomatic seal of approval. If somebody wants to use the Hedgewise as ammunition, they can just as well use Hatalath as ammunition. He is as illegal a partner as the Hedgewise. I don't understand what scenario you're proposing at the moment.

Upon deciding to reveal it he did so in a way that was inconvenient and came with a opportunity cost to a very busy person. Does that make him a villain? No, but I maintain that it is what is technically called 'a dick move'.

Of course being a dick is I think mandatory for Trickster Gods so I do not take it too personally :V
As readers, sure, it's annoying to not get told flat out what we want to know. But Mathilde has consistently been characterized as enjoying solving mysteries. So it's less Ranald being a dick and more him giving his friend a fun mystery to investigate whenever she has time. Not like he gave her an order or anything, he just exposed the existence of the question and let her decide what to do with it.

While true, Hatalath isn't in Nordland. The Halethan Hedgewise are, so being seen in Nordland recruiting illegal mages to work on a Laurelorn project could be seen as an escalation from the side of Middenland, on the political front. I don't see this as a big concern, mind, but it is worth taking note of.

There are obvious questions of where Mathilde found this member of the hedgewise, a imperial renegade magic group.

Yeah she isn't constrained by the articles while in Laurelorn, I'll admit that, but it gives the impression of a breach most likely having happened.
