Isn't Eye of the Gods relevant after the unit champion won a duel? there is a jump between giving a blessing(...hopefully) after a successful dedication of victory to getting into a slugfest with another god in a still ongoing duel.

Yep, but my point was that the chaos gods watch all their champions whenever they challenge the champion of anyone else, and will dish our rewards/punishments as a result.

Sometimes I absurdly wish we had more than one Boney so that more quests based on the "roads not taken" at character generation for DL could be explored.
I think alternate versions of Boney would prefer to keep things fresh actually, and my theory is that they would all branch out to make their own way with a different story instead of making alternate versions of DL. Perhaps not even Warhammer related. I think Boney said that he had the next quest's opening post read to post the day after this quest ends if Mathilde dies, and I believe he implied that it wasn't necessarily Warhammer.

Eye of the Gods in the tabletop triggers after you win a duel against a unit champion or character or you defeat a model with the Monster special rule. You roll a 2D6 and look at the reward given to you, which is sometimes not so much of a reward (double 1s is either Stupidity or Spawndom). In the RPG Eye of the Gods works differently, but suffice to say that you have to perform a great deed as determined by your GM then roll a D100 to determine what your Reward is going to be, and if you roll 96-100 you get Eye of the Gods.

If you have less than 6 mutations and 6 or more Rewards of Chaos, you turn into a Daemon Prince. If you have 6 mutations, you turn into a Spawn. If you have less than 6 mutations and less than 6 Rewards, you're gifted with Chaotic Armament and/or mount or upgrading your existing equipment. Other results on Rewards of Chaos can give you a mutation, a Chaos Weapon, a Chaos Steed, a Daemonic Steed, a Daemonic Weapon, a Gift of the Gods (a mutation that doesn't count as a mutation and is almost purely beneficial) or some other stuff that I can't remember right now. Only Champions roll on Rewards of Chaos.

In the tabletop, Chosen are a Special Unit that can roll 3D6 before the battle starts and discard the lowest score, applying the reward from Eye of the Gods to the entire unit. While that's good, it's nothing compared to the customisation you can do to your Champion Character models from Gifts of Chaos. Collar of Khorne is a Gift of Chaos that can only be applied to Characters, and Gifts can only apply to one person per army like a Master Rune.

Now this sounds relatively convoluted and involving tons of RNG, which it is. But my point is, Collar of Khorne is a big deal, and very few people get to wear it. Well, if they're not a dog. Every Hound of Khorne has a Collar of Khorne, but that's a given.

Part and parcel of being a god, I was referring to actively being involved before the duel is won.

Also
I played one game where I had to deal with a 'Suddenly Daemon Prince' option with my high elves.
They have a 'Suddenly Daemon Prince' option in the tabletop!? I thought that sort if thing was reserved to the RPG, talking about a lucky roll.

What do you mean? That a Choas champion suddenly transformed into a Demon Prince? How did you deal with it?:V

Tar-pitting them with a spearmen unit, I think but I can't really remember. Pretty sure I lost though

Eye of the Gods rule. Something like roll 2d6 after winning a challenge, double six means your champion becomes a daemon prince, representing them having accrued enough favour from their patron to ascend.

It requires a decent amount of luck. You need to roll double 6s on a 2D6 on Eye of the Gods, which as I said is only triggered in specific circumstances, then you need to make a Leadership test with your character. Leadership tests require that you roll a 2D6 and see if the result is equal to or less than your Character's Leadership score. The maximum Leadership score, and this is for Lords and the like, is 10. If you succeed on the test, you turn into a Daemon Prince. If you fail, you become Stubborn. If you're already Stubborn, you get +1 Leadership.

Snip about Eye of the Gods
Thanks for the info, was only familiar with the tabletop version, and an old one at that.

Damn, must mean all Chaos players go around with an extra Demon Prince model hoping and waiting for that one lucky day.

Far as I know Chaos wasn't all that good until End Times when they introduced tons of new overpowered rules that made Chaos utterly stupid powerful because they wanted them to win so bad.

Remind me of those 40k tournaments where player submitted results affected the canon and GW was baffled how the factions they intended to be a threat got crubstomped. There was a few Fantasy event like that I think?

Also I won't be surprised if the Rule buffs were released coincidentally with a new line of Chaos models.

I think I've heard that DoC was considered overpowered when they were introduced in 7th?

Though that's Daemons of course, not Warriors.

I haven't checked out 7th Daemons yet, but 8th Daemons have a bunch of limiting factors that make them variable in their strength and fall short if you're unlucky. They didn't seem all that horrendously powerful to me. Part of that is that they have a serious lack of ranged stuff, so the shooting phase is the "dunk on Chaos phase". Also, it's very funny that if you roll a double 1 on Daemonic Instability your entire unit gets zapped out of the table. Just gone. Yes, rolling double 6 means all your units come back to life, but if you roll a double 1, you don't get to roll anymore. That unit's gone. There are some Daemon summoning mechanics, but it's limited by the fact that you have to keep rolling good.

Reign of Chaos also had just as likely a chance of screwing you over as it did helping you. What Endtimes did was that it removed nearly all of the RNG factors that gave Daemons weaknesses and made it all strength.

Definitely Storm of Chaos and Shadows Over Albion were tournaments like that.

Right, I forgot about Storm of Chaos because GW retconned the results, the cowards.

Pertaining to more relevant matters to the thread, assuming we find Alberich, this is going to be the first major combat since the chaos wastes no?

Would be nice to fight someone without magic immunity to outright no sell half of Mathilde tricks.

There's also a neat connection here as well.

Alberich teleported into the realm of Chaos roughly 18 years ago around quest start when Mathilde became a Journeywoman and started her journey as councillor to Stirland. She's grown a lot since then as she finally went out into the world to hone her skills. Alberich was also likely honing his skills, albeit while we trained in the material realm, he was practicing in the Aethyr. It was 18 years for us, but it could have been anywhere from 6 months to 100 years that he spent in there.

I think Alberich coming back as an antagonist is a neat little bookend to the Stirland Arc, particularly as the mini turn had a bunch of reunions and catching up with Stirland characters as we get a look at their developments (Roswita being so comfortable with Wizards, Regimand proud as punch to have an apprentice seeing through his tricks, Anton being content with his love life, the Waldenhof and Mikalsdorf sieges coming to an end, heralding the end of the Sylvanian wars for the moment).

It would be nice to put Alberich to rest as a symbolic end to the Stirland chapter of Mathilde's life, so a new chapter can be written without the Haupt Anderssens or the legacy of the Van Hals haunting the lands.

Just read the whole quest over the last 5 days, I love this story. New to questing so I hope I'm doing this right.
Welcome the quest. You are doing it correctly, the tally picks up on anything that begins on a new line with a [x]. If you wish to see the current vote count you can click the 'New tally' box below the reply box or 'Vote tally' in the thread tools drop-down at the top right of the page, it will also tell you the last time it was ran, so you can see how current it is.

What I often wonder is what would have happened if at character creation Mathilde had been an Amethyst wizard. Or even a Muggle. In the later case, I imagine she would have stayed in the Empire instead of gallivanting to K8P.
This question has come up before. Back then my conclusion was that the biggest early difference was our ability to Shadowsteed and Mindhole. Without those two things the story would have diverged quite early on.

Welcome welcome.

May I ask how you found this Quest?

Welcome welcome.

May I ask how you found this Quest?

I found Threads of Destiny on Royal Road, and when I was caught up there I followed it here to catch up to the latest stuff. I discovered I liked it even better with the context of the the quest roleplay, really scratched my itch for RPGs. I've been lurking on Threads of Destiny for a few months, I found this when both Divided Loyalties and Threads won the user's choice awards. While reading this (thank Ranald for reader mode) I made an account because otherwise I couldn't see the dice rolls (the SV dice roller doesn't show unless you are logged in) and once I had an account there's less excuse to keep lurking. I've only read Threads and Divided Loyalties so far so if there's others I should check out I'd appreciate DMs with recommendations.

@Boney thank you for writing this quest, it's really good and I can't imagine how much time and energy it's taken total.

Welcome welcome. I'm pleased to see a new reader. If you've been reading the story in Reader Mode you might have missed some of the informational posts:
Members of the Waystone Project
This is the Organisations threadmark to keep track of Mathilde's organisations.
This is the Collection of Important Information threadmark, which includes a bunch of enlightening response from Boney in regards to certain topic across the quest's lifespan.
Spellbook of Grey Magic
This is the collection of spells from the Ulgu spellbook. Vital for keeping track of Mathilde's masteries.
This post is Boney answering a bunch of FAQs.
Player-Created Informational Posts
I'm shilling my own work here, but there's also other great posts made that are collected in here which I think you should check out. This quest can be a bit overwhelming at first glance, but we've done our best to make it more digestible for newer readers.

This is just neat and cute fanart.

You know it just occurred to me... we took almost all the research options. you can tell we are playing a very learning heavy Grey Wizard. Ironically I think the worst foe for Mathilde would be one that is mostly mundane, like a criminal syndicate or spies from another nation, people who do not show up much on mage sight and who are not written of in obscure libraries.

In this case, that's what Regimand is here for. While Mathilde is busy researching stuff in libraries and using her high profile contacts, Regimand is getting down and dirty with the mundane people that get the wheels of everyday life moving. He's had decades to hone his skills in the mundane spheres, Mathilde has had little experience in that since Stirland and even then you could hardly call what she experienced there mundane.

I do agree that stuff like that is probably not something she'd be great at, but that's where delegation comes into play. Can't have everyone be good at everything.
