I'm too embarrassed at Mathilde's part of the work, which is sloppy all on its own, to give it to the Colleges.Donating it to the Colleges might be the best for what we actually enchanted this item for - a proof of concept. We will no doubt write a paper on this, but if this paper is accompanied by the actual item I think the colleges will be more impressed. So all in all I'm leaning towards the EIC or the Colleges right now.
@Boney Is Clarity one of those spells that no non-Light Wizard should be using on a day that he also plans to cast spells on?
If he is, that kind of puts a darker slant on him assassinating the Empress and making way for her to be replaced by a prophetess of Ranald. Is Regimand a Ranald worshipper?
Can't remember if that's the case or not.
Still very interesting that we know of at least one focal Waypoint that is in the Human style. I would be very interested to spend an action visiting it with Tochter Grunfeld and looking at it with our Windsight. There may have never been anyone looking at it with enough skill that Teclis (who was biased) and maybe Volans (though he might never have done so and/or kept certain observations to himself). The reason that the major waystone network is Jade in nature rather than Elven appears to be because the Elves did not build up Altdorf like they did their other major cities.
Speaking of Windsight, I'd like to compare Mathilde's to that of the Elven contributors to the Waystone Project at some point. We know we are definitely worse than Teclis and the two Dragons we've talked to. But we have no idea how it compares to that of your average Grey Lord, greater forest spirit or Hekartine mage.
By now she must definitely have developed her own recognizable style. I'm curious if her readers can tell the difference between a paper she mostly wrote personally and a paper she phoned in and let Max do most of the writing. At least this part was more productive. This is particularly nice to expand Mathilde's recent journey into being a sensationalist writer. I'm starting to think people in the Academic sphere who pay attention to her are starting to look forward to her work. Exotic, thorough AND well written/engaging. You couldn't ask for more.
Prices of crafted goods being pegged to supply and demand instead of rank and effort. Interesting glimpse into an Imperial Dwarf. Thanks for sharing. His indifference is for good reason, and he is more than happy to set his own prices.
So there's no canon info on who they are or represent politically? Are they the nobles of Talabheim? The head of the local church? Generals appointed by another political entity?"The Hunters' Council controls Talabheim's militia, City Watch, and even its levies for the army. The Hunter Lords, all of the ranks of General, include Mannfred Schultz, Christoph Stallmaier, Detlef Kienholtz, and Joerg Hafner. Schultz commands Talabheim's army and was severely wounded during the recent struggles. Still recovering from his grievous injuries, he leaves the day-to-day affairs to his various commanders. Stallmaier commands the Taalbaston Guard, and Kienhotlz commands the City Watch. Joerg Hafner is in charge of the Militia and serves as the commanding officer of Taal's Chosen."
A mix of the above?
The whole mountain? Did the whole thing betray its nature under her Windsight or only a part of it? Did Mathilde have to go to the base or the top to manipulate it?
Does that mean you rather we don't do it even when it makes sense? Or just that we should keep repetition like that rare and have a compelling reason for it that we discuss beforehand?
I was actually expecting that it might be harder. Just not being easier is a relief.plus the problem was having to overcome instinctive reactions to enchanting in close proximity to another Wind, which is something that Mathilde will grow better at with any experience, so repeating the same enchantment instead of trying a new one wouldn't make it easier.
Also, her problem this time was, among other things, her instinctive aversion to Hysh in particular being thrown around. So if there is any lingering problem that translates into a numeric malus upon repeat actions it might affect whatever enchantment we next attempt with Egrimm.
So it does the job it was supposed to, even if the spell work is sloppy and ugly. That's a win in my book, even if an embarrassing one.
Although... How unprecedented is what Mathilde achieved here even? Could it be seen as nothing more groundbreaking than an enchanted Hysh pommel and an enchanted Ulgu seat that are then merged into something fundamentally less flexible and useful than either of the two? Or is it actually a proof of concept that can do something never done before in the Colleges, even if it does it badly and inelegantly?
I'm not asking how the peer review of Magisters would ultimately judge it. Just Egrimm's and Mathilde's own assessment of what they wrought here. We didn't see Egrimm be either exhilarated at the new discovery he never thought possible, nor saw anything like politely hidden confusion at what the point of all this was. Nor did we see his initial reaction to Mathilde explaining what she has in mind. So I have a hard time gauging how revolutionary any of this was.
What's the capital of Talabecland in sources that don't have it be Talabheim?Whether Talabheim is independent or part of Talabecland flip-flops wildly depending which source you read. For DL, I'm going with it being the capital of Talabecland.
So one could say that Talabheim differs from other provinces in that the EC's Military advisor is not necessarily in charge of the province's military. Instead they have a separate council with no permanently selected supreme commander that has quite a bit of independent political power. That must be at least a bit scary to whoever rules the place. Who appoints the individual Hunter Lord Generals (or whatever they are called)?Talabheim's military council, consisting of various military leaders including those in charge of the Army of Talabecland, the Taalbaston Guard, the Talabheim militia, and the City Watch.
I think she's pretty conservative (in this aspect) even compared to the standards of the wider Empire. Or at least when compared to the standards of the Human company she usually shares.Mathilde was embarrased at showing her ankles in Eagle Castle. She's pretty conservative by our standards.
I vaguely recall that Stirland (commoners?) are more prude than average, though I don't remember where from. The Jade, Bright, Amber, Gold and Amethyst Orders also probably have less of a culture of being embarrassed by nudity than the other three (though the latter two for very different reasons than the first three). Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if the Grey College actually subtly encourages some of the pre-existing prudishness. Not only is the Order not a fan of their Magisters having children, confusing feelings about sexuality are probably also conductive to Ulgu without sabotaging operational ability.
I'm pretty sure Heidi is capable of using connections that don't out her as the Empress. The problem with bringing Heidi in is that while she'd no doubt have a lot of sway we very much does not want Alric to get disrupted here and start looking into the Empress instead. The Empress' influence is anything but subtle, regardless of how deftly it's used someone like Alric might notice it. The former Patriarch of the Lights would be a nightmare for our Ranaldian conspiracy if he caught sight of it. Regimand has the same issue. We care about stopping Alric, keeping the Heidi conspiracy secret and stopping whatever is happening here, but Regimand only cares about the last. If we bring him in specifically for his knowledge about the last conspiracy against the Haupt-Anderssens he's likely to start looking into Heidi. We might be able to leverage our personal relationship but I'm not sure we can stop him if he uncovers something he shouldn't.
If either of these two men find anything strange we're in a lot of trouble. Maybe we should take on this one on our own.
Pretty sure that Tor Lithanel will want to keep foreign politics under their own jurisdiction, similar to how the Empire had to go through Karaz-a-Karak when they wanted to ask what was going on with the canals.Interesting place.
Wonder how well their political system will handle the chaotic situation of increased contact with the Empire.
I can wholly agree with that.Stirland needs a Dämmerlichtreiter. And if Mathilde's not there herself for it, she'll damn well make one.
