Okay, arguing about the vote aside since basically all the arguments are repeats now.
Some examination of the update proper.
"Very good, the messages?"
"S-sent," Yan Shenyi wheezed. "Evidence planted, false leads sent, discord will be sown. Please, I've done as instructed."
Renshu is holding Shenyi hostage with something.
And Shenyi was instructed to lay a trail blaming someone for events, while also being bait.
Its some good leverage, since Shenyi is on the hook for a hell of a lot if he gets caught.
Something about the indulgent self importance of those tickled Ling Qi's memory, even as she studied the formation circle. It was a transport array, tuned for sending small amounts of mid qi density goods, or single individuals of no more than third realm. A smugglers array, and a high end one. Something to transport reagents of medicines of dubious provenance. It pointed to a location east and down, the sewer outlet which emptied into the river?
Her senses fell back on the shaking man and the crystal. The crystal was out of place, the formations at its base newer. She did not think the speaker and the builder of this room were acquainted. No. It felt very much commandeered.
Shenyi seems to have expected to be able to evacuate, since once he felt he was made, he fled here, probably expecting to use the formation to bug out.
Now, we remember from the previous update that this room is
integrated into the city's formations, and the transport formation is tainted black.
Simply put, this room
is built by the city's founder.
Perhaps with the original purpose of a panic room and last ditch escape route for dependents. Now, how does Renshu find it?
He doesn't. He doesn't have the connections.
The Lith must have known about it, which explains much about
what it was used for.
The underground trade.
Lith surface agents are no more than third realm, and this shielded room is an ideal place to make trade arrangements, while a sewer outlet wouldn't bother impurity cultivators.
We can presume the formation has been hijacked and modified, since its integrated with the city's formations, a suitable formation master can use it to propagate signals through the city formations.
Or chain it to another formation, though I don't think a hackjob would last long.
"You have done well, but with the target in place, your role has come to an end. Your gift will flower and activate the party favors. That girl will be removed from the board, ending the farce in the south, and the wretches of the Emerald Sea destabilized. Hail to the Twilight King, live in death, disciple."
Her thoughts spun. Removed from the board, her, the Twilight King? Cults of such dark things existed, usually small and petty committing minor terrors, but the sheer sarcasm in that catechism left her with little doubt that it was anything but a cover.
Quite a lot packed into very few words here, since Renshu felt the need to monologue to the guy he's betraying:
-Gift - As we suspected, the ruptured lung meridian is a Lith symbiote, which he likely believed to be beneficial. Possibly a patch for a preexisting problem? The self destruct function was likely part of the parcel, given that Lith cultivators have shortened lifespans, their communal ideals would make such a thing a feature rather than a flaw.
-The Yans, as we learned last update, hails from the peaks, and have that predictable dismissal of foreign diplomacy.
-Destabilization leverages on the Diao being on the hook. A viscount's seat of power being smashed would provoke intense blameslinging, because someone's going to eat a lot of shit regardless. Even if it was stopped, if the Viscount/Count isn't seen to have taken appropriate measures, there'd be a big shitnado.
--Bonus points, based on how Qi acted back when Renshu framed her, a reasonable expectation would be that she'd privately investigate and follow the trail to the source. If so, it'd set her up for responsibility for killing a city in Diao lands, and pitting Renxiang against the Diao would be
easy.
-Hooking it to the a cult of the Twilight King means the ES is going to be open to serious MoI investigation, since its no longer State but Federal. Worse, without direct evidence, the Shoggoths aren't really distinguishable from other kinds of undead abominations, especially given what it'd take to stop them. Given that the symbiote would be the core of what comes out, it would look like he tried an undeath ritual.
All told, whoever planned this out seems to have a keen insight into Imperial strata politics, but seem to be working with very narrow understandings of ES politics. So probably Yan Renshu's detailings on the plan, the Lith's comprehension should end at the point of "destroyed a city".
Things slotted into place, the cardinal locations he had visited over the last few days, a map assembled in her mind, lines drawn, this little cubby the center. She hadn't sensed any formations at the locations, but if there were, something of this size, hidden in the lines between the cities wardings…
This portion sounds more like a Finger operation, they certainly have the stealth for it, and you wouldn't need formations, his presence leaking Impure qi is all the signal they need to arm the caches.
Yan Shenyi's eyes bugged out and he stumbled forward grasping the crystal. "You-no, you promised, you unfilial little shit!"
"Come now Cousin, it's… nothing personal."
It struck Ling Qi then, the tone the self assurance, the smug, self satisfied sleaze. She felt a pulse of something corrupt and impure, like the energies of the ith'ia, gathering in the now ranting Yan Shenyi's chest.
"No."
Her voice was a cold wind, sending the little candles lighting the room guttering out. It interrupted the frantic man's ranting, made his red face grow white as the temperature in the room plunged. Made frost spread across the slowly pulsing gray crystal.
"…What." said the voice in the crystal.
Hey, Renshu, shouldn't be surprised, this was hardly the first time Ling Qi was Already There in your base, nevermind expressedly seeking to lure her there and THEN being surprised that she's there.
"I said, no." Ling Qi said coolly, and her hand plunged into Yan Shenyi's back. She had felt it there, as it pulsed, the little knot of corruption throwing off its veil, so like she had experienced down in those tunnels. A ribcage wasn't exactly a vault, but what good was she if she couldn't improvise.
She reached into the spaces between solid matter, around the gnarl of twisted space, and grasped something segmented and slimy, with far too many wriggling legs, it was grasped tight around Yan Shenyi's lungs, it's legs dug in like a clamp, any attempt to physically remove it would no doubt kill him, and, she suspected, set off these 'party favors' if in reduced form.
So she didn't remove it physically. With a tight grasp on its writhing body, Ling Qi stepped sideways through the veil, and walked, for a moment in dream.
This meanwhile is a combination of several things she's been learning applying simultaneously:
-She watched an implantation ritual from start to end. Without that, she wouldn't even have had any option other than killing Shenyi to try to stop it. And killing him would just activate it
anyway.
-She had Opened Vault. There are a number of other methods, but of the
Green options, most of them would destroy and activate the Symbiote regardless. You'd have needed a Medicine, Fleshcrafting or some kind of realm defying means that wasn't lethal...like Stealing.
-The symbiote would have died after removal from the host due to the environment, activating it. It had to be dealt with in a way that didn't kill it. A Green realm escape talisman wouldn't get it out of range. Liminal stuff is Cyan stuff(and Renshu wouldn't know about it yet before he went rogue). A Purification technique could work, but it'd have a very tiny window to work in.
It would be a foolproof plan normally against anyone within Green Realm other than a seriously Purification oriented cultivator. And even a Cyan would have trouble without a well aligned Way.
She saw for a moment a grey expanse, a misty city in twilight, quiet streets where nothing ever happened, where the grand troubles and intrigues of the world were far away. A place where inspectors and criminals alike had an understanding that nothing was truly worth getting worked up about.
And she saw the black rot beginning to set in at the foundations. Apathy, stagnation.
Wonder if its a deliberate setup, a city setup to be a large scale game of cops and robbers.
Because the secret room had to be built by someone tied into the official powers.
And it'd be a good place to season intrigue and investigation focused cultivators before they go into more hardcore places.
But the situation enabled institutional decay, so there wasn't enough oversight or the inmates had taken over the asylum.
A pale and sinuous worm lashed in her hand, legs wriggling circular tooth lined mouth gasping and flailing a whiplike tail tipped by bone hook lashed at her wrist and skittered off her skin as if it had struck steel.
She regarded it with some disgust, it was a tube filled with rot and decay, a living battery. Ling Qi glanced up at the sky overhead, full of clouds, and just peaking through was a crescent moon, hanging grinning in the starry sky.
"My offering," Ling Qi said, cocking her arm back, fixing her eyes on the lunar crescent as she hurled the worm skyward. There was no law of earth here, and so it vanished with only a fading squeal, and a puff of cloud.
Its a fitting sacrifice.
An impossible theft, after a contest of wits.
And then she was back in the room, standing behind a slumped over man and looking into the crystal.
"What?!" the voice from the crystal, Yan Renshu's voice snarled.
"Dead men lose their hearing, good to know," Ling Qi said coldly.
"You... you can't be here! This room is impenetrable without the power of a fourth realm! And what did you just do to my masterpiece!"
She cocked her head to the side, her eyes narrowing into viscous slits. "Have you ever considered that you're just not very good at security."
Her response was a wordless scream of range warbling through the crystals distorting filter.
I mean...the weak point was the guy using it. Just follow him in lol.
As for the 'masterpiece', sounds like his worm pit method evolved to include lith techniques. Suyin remains his dark mirror it seems.
'Sixiang', Ling Qi thought.
"Sending a message out, telling them to shut down the locations, full search, major cult attack in potentia."
That was for the best, she could explain the details later, that would kick the whole Ministry of Law over like a hive of irritated bees.
Without the details that would be alarming and confusing as hell.
Welcome, MoL, to the Ling Qi Adventure.
Enjoy the ride!
"I don't know what you did, but its far beyond a child's grudge," Ling Qi said. The qi in that worm pointed to nothing good. His words, that she would be taken off the board… he had to be confident in the killing power of his work, to kill one as resilient as her before the patriarch and elders of the town could react.
How many mortals and low cultivators would have died to that.
We did make a Fourth Realm work for it. And we stalled Su Ling's mom for like 2 exchanges.
Pretty big punch needed.
"A child's grudge, you dare…"
"Found you."
He spluttered, Ling Qi smiled softly. She hadn't of course. He was speaking through a communication array that she couldn't even parse. She had no technique which could track someone like that, and while she could maybe conceive of tracking someone down via impression in the dream, her current skills didn't go so far
She felt the connection cut off, the crystal growing dark. Would he dare open another connection to the city, not knowing what she could do?
...reminder that as far as Renshu knows, Ling Qi hadn't stopped improving in Formations since she walked through his base and dismantled all but his best formations.
He had every reason to believe she could backtrace it.
Rather than shelve formations for a year.
"Stop," she spoke and he froze. "What do you know about these 'party favors'?"
"Seeds. Seeds in the sewers, rat men, corpse eaters, needed guidance. Not any formations I've seen Had… friend in the Ministry of Works, got maps. In the cisterns, had to be.... watered regularly." he wheezed.
So this is a multivector attack:
-Seeds in the sewers. Biological weapons, dumb. Likely can be triggered by symbiote, Lith agents or proximity/disturbance trigger.
-Lith agents needed guidance, and his travels topside acted as a homing beacon for them, as well as smuggling them maps from the Ministry to identify targets. They'd act once they receive word that the mission is busted, but that requires that Renshu value the mission over his own fear. Otherwise they'd remain armed, but would likely not deploy for a day yet, waiting for a signal that hadn't come. Will go aggro once any intruder finds them.
-Cisterns had another biological weapon that needed regular tending. Delayed dead man switch I bet. Once he stopped tending them they'd go off and likely set off the sewer seeds, which makes sense as a secondary trigger since the sewers are inherently downstream of the cisterns.
This is a massive op. And it reminds me of the disease spirits attack.
Blown apart by Renshu's inability to let a grudge go.
The Lith are NOT going to be happy about this.
