Furthermore, we actually have very good compact hydraulic actuators! Our Iron Tiger hydraulics are aerospeace grade Electro-Hydrostatic Actuators, which are very compact and only need an electrical connection.
I agree that if we keep the torpedoes free flooded intentionally we don't have to build the tubes as an air lock. However that still doesn't solve the issue of being unable to easily conduct maintenance or repairs, the need to wire a connection to to the bridge for each individual torpedo, or the problem where a jammed shut or broken launcher means we cannot use that torpedo.

If we went for a 4 tube submarine build with internal storage of torpedoes in the pressure hull, we would be able to manually inspect the torpedoes and the launch tubes, and be able to perform some level of maintenance or repairs while underway if needed. Only having to wire 4 tubes to the bridge means that we would need only a quarter of the wiring compared to 16 individual launchers. And even if 3 of our tubes were broken or otherwise unusable, we would still be able to fire every torpedo we have out the 4th tube.

In addition our Iron Tiger engines are good, but I don't recall if it was ever stated what they actually are. Either way they don't work when submerged, or at the very least were never designed to. The SCARS is less a underwater operations equipment and more, well I can't even call it just a pressure vessel since it was never designed to handle pressure. It's just a sealable compartment around the pilot with an internal re-breather. The only reason it's water-tight is because it's air-tight to defend against gas and fallout, and even that's going to implode if you take it to submarine depths since fallout won't crush you like deep water will. I left out the ability for the Iron Tiger to move underwater to make the roll easier, and HeroCooky said that we are going to need more equipment if we want the IT to move underwater in the results update.
or possibly even underwater if additional protections were developed to prevent water ingress to the other vital systems.
"If these things can go without air for about three hours," he spoke, nodding to some finished thought in his head, "what else would be needed to ensure they could walk underwater?"

Mounting stators in front of the blade generates beat frequencies due to the interactions of the flow fields - apprently once you get to basic explanations about cavitation, a big reason skewback propellers look the way they do is that they impinge on those incoming flow fields more gradually and thus generate less noise. We see a general trend toward making torpedoes quieter over time, so I figured this would be a good place for it. Eliminating the stators probably does reduce the effectiveness of the propulsion system due to imperfect swirl recovery, but it also removes the drag of said stators, so it's hard to say whether it's a net gain or loss.
Most submarine pump-jet photos I've seen have the stators mounted behind the rotors to counter-swirl after the propeller has mixed up the water, not before. Would that fix the problem with the beat frequencies since the propeller isn't interacting with the flow from the stators?

edit: I hope people don't mind these wall of text infodumps about submarine technology. 😅
I imagine HeroCooky is going to be taking notes to help decide what goes well in our first sub, and what blows up in our face. Possibly literally if we're talking about high exposives and LOx.

@HeroCooky can you chime in on whether this is canon?
Your engineers can design such a system by adapting what they already have/know from the IT.

It's difficult, but not enough to incurr a -1 Penalty in the d12 system.
I imagine HeroCooky is going to be taking notes to help decide what goes well in our first sub, and what blows up in our face.
I am currently just very glad Jungmin is a delegator+populist character, instead of a military one. Means he'll be as confused about the details as I am, since his military education was about logistics (like mine, kinda) and politics. (Glorious Victories ever closer to home, anyone?)

The Tsunami wasn't... gentle. Or, perhaps, it being too well-timed would be a better description of what happened. Long hours within the shipyard and in the offices to rush out the construction of the fleets resulted in overenthusiastic engineers green-lighting ships with faults and poor construction. Having completed botched inspections, the two fleets set sail into the wider ocean to begin their first assignment, coming back with great success and bellies full of fish and other seafood. Following the selected schedule to maintain maintenance and avoid equipment breakdowns, the second fleet was put into the dock while the third set out. Unfortunately, the Tsunami smashed the third apart, with all hands lost in either the water or on the island. At the same time, the second had only a dozen survivors due to them meeting family as the tsunami warning was issued nationwide. A minute of silence was proposed for the lost lives, though folded into a national day of mourning of the dead.

--[X] Assemble A Scuba Organization to farm seaweed\kelp and oysters for additional food.
(9 + 4 - 2 [Overwork] = 11 - Boosted)
Despite dealing with water and the ocean, the creation and incorporation of auxiliary food harvesting organizations within our efforts to feed the nation were spared the wrath of nature due to their non-ocean-going nature. The program has already seen widespread approval from many sections of the population, as unemployment decreased due to the needed personnel. In addition, many drafted workers reported increased job satisfaction as their work directly aids the nation and future efforts to ward off hunger and starvation.

---[X] Look into the creation of dedicated farms for Oysters. The Oysters as both a source of food and their mother of pearl creations abilities. For revenue.
(3 + 5 - 2 [Overwork] = 6 - Optimal)
The Silver Pearl Marine Science Institute (SPMSI) has presented an updated and comprehensive inquiry and study of the feasibility of oyster farming around Guangchou, with several additional books and undergrad studies centered around the goal. Though not particularly unusual, the promise of luxury goods in pearls and oyster meat for foreign markets, alongside the meat for internal consumption, has led to some excitement in the lower bureaucracy due to the perceived gain in status if such could be procured. Other than that, the SPMSI has made some promising developments in its attempts to design various aquaculture methods to increase food availability.

--[X] Build A Rudimentary Train Network (Helpful) (+1 Reputation)

(7 - 2 [Tsunami] - 2 [Overwork] = 3 - Sub-Optimal)
The effort to create a train network was cut short by the incoming Tsunami, dashing any hopes of the engineers that they would finally finish a long-planned attempt to tie the workers of Guangchou closer together in distance and logistics. Though they constructed a single line from the capital to the Disputed Straight of Oshumi (fuck the IJN!), most of the prepared stockpiles of materials had to be repurposed in the recovery after the Tsunami.

--[X] Construct Another Steel Foundry (Harmful) (+3 Reputation)
---[X] With extra security for both foundries based on the results of your investigation.

(9 - 2 [Overwork] = 7 - Optimal)
The construction of another Steel Foundry proceeded without any problems aside from the disruption of the recovery from the Tsunami, adding yet more capability to our Heavy Industry. Furthermore, the additional security measures were incorporated without any significant problems, though necessitating hiring more guards to ensure that no subversive elements can attempt to destroy our people's industrial capacity again.

--[X] Construct Five Merchant Marine Vessels (+1 -10 Reputation)
(3 -6 [Tsunami] - 2 [Overwork] = -5 - Utter Disaster)
Like the creation of the second and third fishing fleets, so too were our efforts here met utter disaster, as the tidal wave of the Tsunami utterly destroyed our attempts to enlarge our anemic Merchant Marine. Officials informed the crews' families, and the dead were laid to rest with full military honors, though few bodies were recovered for any grave or cremation.

--[X] Construct a food processing factory for frozen and flash-frozen foods for those refrigerators and freezers—primarily meats and vegetables. Keep expansion in mind for either biodegradable boxes for frozen box meals that the people can throw away or nonbiodegradable boxes. You'll pay your people a tiny amount of the price to return to the factory.
(3 - 2 [Overwork] - 1 [Scope] = 0 - Stopped)
Though grand in scope, forward-thinking in nature, and designed to plug a hole in our available capacity to freeze and cool food, the ground for the factory was never broken, as all resources had to be re-directed to help the nation's recovery after the Tsunami.

--[X] Construct a factory to create electric microwaves and microwave ovens for the people to cook with.
(1 + 2 [Ambition] - 2 [Overwork] = 1 - Sub-Optimal)
Construction of a factory for electric microwaves and microwave ovens started shortly before the Tsunami hit our shores. Unfortunately, due to many of the materials not being applicable to the recovery effort continued despite the nationwide drive to restore the nation and the Iwo Jima Crisis happening alongside the effort. Despite the best attempts of the workers and architect, the factory is decidedly... flawed. Yet, it is capable of producing, and maintenance and scheduled improvements will see it able to pave over or remove many of its inadequacies. To be entirely fair, most of that is absolutely due to the stellar work of the assigned engineers working wonders in creating rugged and efficient electric microwaves and microwave ovens.

--[X] Design a new energy-efficient electric microwave and microwave ovens.
(12 + 2 [Ambition] - 2 [Overwork] = 12 - Boosted)
"These," the engineer in front of you says, nearly affectionately patting the electric microwave, "are the future of easy-to-make food!" Then, perhaps sensing your doubt or seeing your exhausted and overworked face, they proceed to give you the run-down of the new creation. "Imagine wanting hot food. We all do. But you don't want to make a whole meal; you either don't have the time or energy to do so. Well," they say, grandiosely gesturing at the somewhat bulky machine. "With a little creativity, or some bought or assigned premade food, you can put it inside, type in the temperature, cook time, and what type of food you are making! This little machine will revolutionize how much time people spend making food by cutting down on the preparation of meals itself! Imagine," they continue as you look at their assistant, both of your long-suffering eyes meeting each other and forming a bond only the critically overworked can share. Premade soups, dinners, meat, vegetables, anything your heart and stomach crave! Just pop-" And on they talk. Dear Lenin, you miss their predecessor. She was curt, to the point, and, best of all, limited her need for weirdness to wearing cat ears. You asked about the capabilities; why are they talking like you want to buy that thing?

(6 + 2 [Food Reality Compliant] - 2 [Overwork] = 6 - Optimal)
Though not as grand a success as you may have hoped, the newly created show "The Workers Kitchen" has seen decent popularity with its focus on creating dishes that can be both produced with what the people have, as well as how to make long-lasting dishes which the people can store even without access to any fridge or freezer. In the broader picture, it is not something useful like another expansion of the farming space or fishing fleet. Still, you have yet to see a downside to auxiliary programs designed to boost what you already have. Besides that, the hosts both know how to make the show enjoyable and able to be sent over the radio, narrating what they are doing and how. Some of the blind workers have sent letters as thanks for just that.

"Justice Prevails!" That is the slogan on the lips of all workers before the Tsunami, with grand posters and signs all over the nation immortalizing the decisive and swift effort to try and close the trial with overwhelming evidence. As a result, the faith in the justice system has never been as high, with more people reporting crimes to the police and courts.

Though you are not in the business of creating capitalistic roots and subversive tendencies within your birth nation, you are a father of five, a soon-to-be father of eight, and a man that wants to see his children grow up with all help and safety you can without smothering them under your gaze and attention. Speaking with staff that helped raise you, friends that have young children, and pedagogues, you bring together what you believe to be enough to make caring for your children much easier for both yourself and the staff. (You also make some notes to improve the child-care programs.) It is nothing groundbreaking, but every little bit helps, especially after your triplets are born and hold Chaoxiang, Hu, and Daiyu in your arms. While you couldn't be happier, the glares of Mai after you got her pregnant with triplets again made the whole thing more than necessary.

--[X] Sneak a few hidden cameras here and there. Surely my lovely wife will appreciate getting the voices of our darling's very first words on tape, especially if I can get them to say mommy first.

Two significant setbacks beset the secret mission to get your children's first words on camera. The first of them was Mai finding the cameras within the bedroom after you had placed them there without hiding them. While that led to a few rather enjoyable nights with experimentation, letting off stress, and cuddling, you had to set back the timetable until you could get the cameras back. The second setback was the Tsunami, which made the whole endeavor take a step back in favor of the nation. Also, the original films themselves vanished, though luckily only after you had made copies. Still, where the hell did you put the darn things?!

There are expectations to be a child of the Great Leader that have to be upheld, no matter what one may think of the subject. You know this first hand, as the pressure to exceed and do well in study, politics, and life had only been eased with you sneaking out and spending time without any of that. Starting to create the best environment you could to help your children without making them seek freedom by doing drugs or running away, having nervous breakdowns, developing an "attitude" better described as becoming arrogant little shits that think they deserve the world or becoming strippers wasn't easy. Though you, personally, wouldn't mind the latter option, if they were happy with doing that, other people would only see your station and demand the same dignity/poise of your children, further adding pressure. Or, to put the whole matter into one short sentence: it was a mess to start helping your children become the best they could be and would be for decades to come.

Guangchou's electronics are in advance of even those of the West, and while central planning at a national scale will require a dedicated supercomputer, a more limited implementation of the system (such as within a single closed city) is achievable with existing resources. So, out of curiosity, how do we start the star metal alloy action chain now that we've unlocked it?
Edit: also what benefits does it give?

... OK so, if I remember right Hetalia is nation-people right? So I see Guangchou as a super happy go lucky, flamboyantly bi-sexual person of indeterminate gender. Normally very chill, but when provoked pulls out a fucking iron tiger suit to stomp people with. Also on par with Russia during winter in terms of "Places you shouldn't invade". As for situations that could be amusing to see this as... I feel like a scene of Guangchou digging up a box full of old German stuff and starting to tinker with it, in the background a totally normal day in the world of hetalia, where Guangchou is just slowly building up a massive mechsuit behind the other countries while they're doing something else and no one seems to notice. Might end up writing this omake, probably won't though since I've got a lot to do today.
Do any metal-use-related action and you'll trigger the event for the Starmetal Alloy Chain.

And the benefits is a better alloy. :V
Better than current IT derived alloys?

That will be up to the thread to decide once the alloy is revealed.
Wait, so the thread is going to get to decide what kinds of properties it has then? Am I interpreting that right?
...
I feel like this event chain is going to be another step down the road of awesome chaos that began with Guangchou's trait being selected, continued with the discovery of Iron Tigers and then further escalated with the Iwa Jima incident. Like, this alloy might turn out to be something way more unusual than just being a better metal for making stuff out of, just judging by our past record of this stuff. Honestly I hope it does because it'll doubtless be awesome if it does happen.

So, finding a maintenance evolution for a modern torpedo is... difficult, for pretty self evident reasons, however here's what I can find on the wiki:

Germany introduced its first battery-powered torpedo shortly before World War II, the G7e. It was slower and had shorter range than the conventional G7a, but was wakeless and much cheaper. Its lead-acid rechargeable battery was sensitive to shock, required frequent maintenance before use, and required preheating for best performance. The experimental G7ep, an enhancement of the G7e, used primary cells.

...

Modern electric torpedoes such as the Mark 24 Tigerfish or DM2 series commonly use silver oxide batteries which need no maintenance, allowing torpedoes to be stored for years without losing performance.

Now, I can't find a primary source for this, but it seems reasonable? Removing the need for underway maintenance would be a huge boon so I can see navies investing in it.

The wiring issue I don't even see as a problem? It's a wire that gets connected to the main computer system (remember, we're using Alfa class automation), which is probably the compartment right behind the forward ballast tank so the wire runs wouldn't even be that long.

Finally, the jammed launcher is likewise not really an issue for me? Firstly because I don't expect it to come up with any sort of regularity - it's a very simple mechanism, and it would be designed to be as reliable as possible. In fact, I would rate a regular torpedo tube to be likelier to be rendered inoperable by some sort of mechanical issue given it's larger number of components. And if it does jam in the closed position, it's just one torpedo. You've got... 13 more. No biggie. Jamming in the open position would be more problematic tbh because it would mess with the hydrodynamics, but again, that's why you make sure the mechanism is reliable. There's a degree of mechanical risk that's involved with any military vehicle, and that's ok because the capabilities it brings to the table are worth it.

The turbines wouln't function underwater because they don't have a snorkel, and the electrics are probably not waterproofed against long term immersion, but the actual actuators should be fine.

Most submarine pump-jet photos I've seen have the stators mounted behind the rotors to counter-swirl after the propeller has mixed up the water, not before. Would that fix the problem with the beat frequencies since the propeller isn't interacting with the flow from the stators?

It would, yeah.
I'm fine leaving the question of stators+rudders vs combined-stator-rudders to our engineering department. :p

I imagine HeroCooky is going to be taking notes to help decide what goes well in our first sub, and what blows up in our face. Possibly literally if we're talking about high exposives and LOx.

?????

I'm sorry but this just seems weirdly doomery? Like, there's a degree of risk to anything we do? Especially developing military hardware? That doesn't mean we shouldn't try to push the envelope - this sort of risk can be managed.

Your engineers can design such a system by adapting what they already have/know from the IT.

It's difficult, but not enough to incurr a -1 Penalty in the d12 system.
I am currently just very glad Jungmin is a delegator+populist character, instead of a military one. Means he'll be as confused about the details as I am, since his military education was about logistics (like mine, kinda) and politics. (Glorious Victories ever closer to home, anyone?)

Huuuuuuuuuh. So we might actually be able to use rim-driven pumpjets on our submarine. We do the initial development on the torpedo, and then figure out scaling on the submarine. Honestly, for the chance to eliminate the hull piercing propeller shaft, I'd be willing to take the hit to low speed efficiency - not having to seal that would be a huge savings in terms of production complexity.

We'll have to be carefull with the hydrodynamic shaping of the hull tho...

Hmmm, we'll need a good high strength steel for the submarines, and that sould be useful for all kinds of other construction projects
Through we should also spin up an Aluminum foundry sometime soon, or specialize one of our steel plants for stainless steel.

OK, but do we want to use this action for something reasonable like that, or do some omake fuckery in order to see how far we can push it? Also given it's name it's probably going to be a metal at least partially derived from meteorites and such, which could prove to be an issue if we try and use it for anything large in scale. Though it might end up being simply an alloy inspired by the composition of meteorites, in which case we wouldn't need to go about constantly securing more meteorite bits to use in the alloy.

As a more broad note about the action chain, we should contemplate that this alloy could be something other than a simply a better version of an existing thing like steel or aluminum. We could go for some more exotic properties to make it useful in other things, like maybe it could be a really good conductor of electricity, or maybe it could have the ability to act as a solid state battery or capacitor, or perhaps it has some weird magnetic or chemical properties we can exploit to use it in manufacturing and high tech equipment. There's way more possibilities for an exotic alloy made from rocks that fell from the sky than just being a better structural material or more durable armor.

Excellent. This'll teach people not to bloat their plans.

Proceeds to conveniently ignore that I voted for said plan. But only to teach a lesson, honest!

There's really nothing special about the stuff meteorites are made of - the secret sauce is all about the process. I would imagine it's something to do with how the heat of re-entry and the impact acts on the materials. That's something that can be replicated on the ground.

edit: @HeroCooky, are the reputation losses for the Mingxiang mega projects all applied up front and cover all the sub-actions?

You forget the other things meteorites go through that most other earthly materials wouldn't have, at least not recently, long term exposure to unfiltered radiation from the sun and other stars, existing in vacuum while being bombarded with all sorts of tiny high energy particles and micro-meteorites, along with possibly passing through earth's Van Allen radiation belt. Those will probably not end up being part of what makes it special unless we discover something really unusual about it, but it's still possible that they might be. I do get your point, it's probably not going to require specialized materials, beyond maybe a few trace elements, but it will likely require some very special machinery and equipment to refine. I still feel like we should keep our minds open about perhaps using this action chain to create a material with some more exotic properties though.

And what does 'Any negative trends are blocked for this turn.' mean?

This is an absolutely wild ride of a plan that dips us back down to 44 reputation in exchange for laying the groundwork for saving the USSR from collapse, rebuilding our lead in electronics, and starting to unfuck our lack of educated personnel. As the #1 Voted Most Hated Squadmate of Mass Effect 2 would say: Heavy risk, but the priiiiiize.

To be frank, this would not be so painful if we'd spent resources earlier to secure our lead in electronics, but it is what it is. I've got us going all in on Mingxiang: closed city, electronics factory, supercomputer design, CybersSsn development. All these items are interconnected: we need the electronics factory to make computers for CyberSyn and the supercomputer, we need the supercomputer to expand CyberSyn beyond Mingxiang, we need CyberSyn to actually keep the USSR from economic collapse, and we desperately need the closed city established so we can start to catch-up to the west in terms of computer chip manufacturing because OOC once they discover the same design rules we use to optimize our chips our advantage will be erased while they race ahead because they've poured more money into lithography research.

I've thrown in Commiewood because it's fucking +5 rep/people's opinion, and frankly I expect entertainment to become our rep farming action that we can spam without raising tensions with Taiwan, which we'll need after taking such a hit this turn.

Also threw in Kelp Expansion and Freezedried Foods to finish up food security - after this 5YP I think we should switch to using imports to bump our food situation from Adequate to Good by trading consumer goods and heavy machinery to the PRC and USSR in exchange for food.

Goddammit. Did someone steal our homemade porn? Guangchou won't care, but that could be annoying on the international stage.
