That was my assumption: Guang scientists and engineers might have had some ad hoc testbeds and tools, but we'd need to build up dedicated facilities and a sustained research effort; probably worth it though, and not just for the aesthetics and memes. 😈
TIL, apparently the first paper about CFD in 3D models was from 1968 (from people at Douglas Aircrafts) and it was used at the time for ship hulls and aircraft fuselage; in 1982, the "VSAERO" paper had just been published... which is the most widely-used "panel method" CFD program to this day.
Given that the main limitation of CFD at the time was the computers' speed, and that we are a decade ahead of time on that front, we might be able to get ahead of everyone else with relatively-little effort... and it would make us better at most of our engineering projects:
- better turbines in jet engines, geothermal and nuclear power plants, etc.
- optimizing the aerodynamics of our trains, aircrafts, ships, etc.
ditto for the hydrodynamics of the watercrafts - everything about rockets: from the shape of fairings and nozzles, to simulating combustion chambers (I heard our Chosen One has combustion instability issues?) etc.
- oceanic fluid flows... like in the Gyre Deep Water Fertilization and Sea-Forest megaprojects
- it leads us to weather forecasting... which TIL was also pretty well-developed at the time:
many countries had practical numerical forecasting in routine use by the late 50s, and by "now" (early 80s) models even accounted for the interactions of soil and vegetation with the air 🤯
Also, updated the HKDF proposal with a reference implementation, property-based tests, etc.
I've apparently been procrastinating away all the... general awfulness of my current situation 😅
P.P.S.: Updated it, replaced mentions of SHA-1 to 3 hash function families with the less-anachronistic MD4.
(Can't pick something older, I needed it to still be supported by Python for testability)

I wrote a heckton of notes on aspects I'd like to discuss, while off travelling, on both the railway aspects and (I suspect) even more about the urbanism and land use aspects.

Yes, more-efficient propellers and windmills would make windmill ships even more effective.
It's not just our fuel consumption either, I suspect those might become a hot commodity to export (or tech to transfer)
- ~60% of shipping costs on goods are... the actual ship-ing ;
- I can't find hard numbers on that, but I'd guessthe main cost of marine shipping is oil:
- crew sizes are pretty small, compared to the volume carried by container ships ;
- the ship's TCO is amortized over a looooong time.
- The 70s just got done with their second major oil crisis ('79)... and we can still look forwards to the 90s oil shock and the 2000s' 5y-long rise in oil prices
... assuming we don't butterfly-sledgehammer those: Iraq might not invade Kuweit, given that CyPac's help might help get them out of the debt the war with Iran saddled them with; the 2000s crisis does not seem to have a single main apparent cause, so it's likely still on.

It's fine, I have some ideas how to fit both the technical work, and the character exposition I want to see... though it means I really will have to pick names for more of the people involved, and I have no idea how to. 😅

Not a problem actually. Even if the atmosphere is more formal, I still expect there to be some levity. Also academics do get in fights so that remark in your specification draft would be reasonable. The official final specification wouldn't have it though.

The explosions of four nuclear bombs reverberated around the world like bells struck by deaf executioners, the sounds racing out from the cities they had murdered to be forever etched into the minds of those who heard them like gongs struck by demons wicked and cruel. And like four bells struck with little warning, those who listened to their sounds, be it by radiation or diplomats screaming about missing nuclear weaponry, the world reacted in ways that none could adequately describe when nuclear panic was once more at the forefront of the human races, even if one was far too young to sufficiently understand the dread its elder harbored.
Schools were closed by necessity in America as hundreds of thousands took their children from those cradles of learning or refused to let them go. At the same time, millions more brought the economy to a screeching halt when they refused to work in fear of dying away from family and perceived safety. In the USSR, not even the harshest censors were able to stop the biblical flood of pictures and videos from being played and seen by millions more, the sight and sounds of dying children accompanied by men, women, and more of all ages begging for the mercy of death as blisters and coal-like flesh stood side by side on mangled bones no longer able to hold meat well-done on bones charred and cracked alike by forces beyond human comprehension. Within those places farther from the information networks of humanity, the news reached still, and they reached people deeper yet, for the imagination is a beast that thrived within the dark and the murky waters of a people that were barely educated in the weapons brought to bear against the innocent in faraway lands.

With the advent of ever more sophisticated automation technologies and the growing material abundance that the workers of Guangchou have access to thanks to their labors, the need for yet more means by which those very same fruits can be distributed is required and thought up. One of those is the Durable Good Library, a means by which a selection of households, typically situated within an LSEEH's Service And Distribution Level, can gain access to goods that, while needed, are not typically required in everyday life, such as vacuums or a variety of tools. Within them, residents can "borrow" communally owned goods for use before returning them, all noted down in a computer where one notes name, date, time, and materials before returning them while also noting such down again. A system that requires trust from all involved but also one bolstered by the equipment within, as such has been specifically marked to be easy to track should thieves try to take advantage of the trust extended to them by the residents and workers of Guangchou.

There were certain things that you could not plan for, and some were there would always be a lack or surplus of things, things that could not be adequately supplied in economies that were driven by spreadsheets and human minds intending to bend efficiency before practicality, or chain profit into line before logistics.
For Guangchou, such things would not need a Campaign of a Thousand Little Things, at least for now, as the workers and the people managed to overcome paperwork and bureaucratic inertia as they built factory after factory dedicated to supplying the things that all needed, in great quantity and small, without being forced to wait for months for basic necessities.
A side effect of such a drive was the re-invigoratization of the restaurant and food industries with a glut of cheaper, yet qualitatively superior, wares they needed for everyday operations. One not felt quickly, but felt in time and tasted with fervor.

I am writing to provide a progress report on the creation of a range of products meeting the appetite of the citizens of the Most Glorious Democratic People's Republic of Guangchou, Light of All Nations, Defender of Humanity, and Paradise on Earth for toys, accessories, outfits, gadgets and other objects sexual purpose in order to improve happiness levels and allow the citizen to provide their own entertainment. The focus of this report is the completion or abandonment of projects, milestones achieved, tasks planned for the next months, and current roadblocks.

- Pumps: the new ultra compact pumps have passed the tests with flying colors, all leakage problems have been resolved, they should be capable of transporting all types of fluids that we or future users desire as long as they are more liquid than jello, their application to a variety of toys is in progress.
- Likewise, industrial manufacturing has made it possible to economically make vibration motors that are much more efficient than those that were previously used,more powerful for less space while being less expensive. More extreme versions have been created, capable of vibrating the nails out of a board they should nevertheless still be almost silent and more importantly safe.
- Lupi toy: finally it's done, no more harassment, no more constant request letters or rumors about "the management who keeps them all for themselves" a complete set of all the Lupi themed sex products you can think of from the dildo to the masturbator through the sex doll (inflatable, fabric, latex or other) life-size with a variety of models with variable characteristics and many others, fortunately succeeding in obtaining appropriate descriptions and studies of the reproductive systems Lupi was surprisingly less difficult than expected ,I wouldn't have been able to deal with the incessant requests much longer if that hadn't been the case.

- The reconstruction of the silos: The planning for the reconstruction of the liquid storage silos as well as the cleaning of last week's accident are completed, it is planned to begin the actual reconstruction in four days with more spaced out rows of silos and more solid pillars, the injured from the "great cum wave" are still in the hospital but the doctors are optimistic about their prognosis, the cause of the incident has been formally identified by the investigators and as suspected in the preliminary inspection it was caused by a worker who became unwell and fainted at the wheel of a forklift before hitting the support pillar of silo number 3 of artificial sperm last week, the deep damage in the structure was not noticed during of the inspection and caused the collapse of the silo into the neighboring silos causing the collapse of the entire row of silos making them spilling their contents on the ground,the wave of said content caused the collapse of the neighboring row of type 7 lubricant silos, fortunately the resulting wave of the two fluids mixed headed towards the exit of the factory causing only a dozen injuries, the products spilled being based on water and various biodegradable components the pollution is minimal although due to the perfume added for more realism it is probable that this section of the plant and land will stink (or smell depending on your point of view) of sperm for several years.
- Animalistic theme: We requested a research team made up of zoologist and veterinarian at Guangchou University three days ago and they should arrive in three more, once arrived they will help the design teams create various animal themed toys and accessories to make them more realistic, mainly dildos and masturbators but not only, it is notably anticipated a certain difficulty in the creation of realistic artificial sperm for all the different species.
Some botanists will also come forward to help with a similar series on a plant theme. - Leather and latex: The causes of the supply problems have been identified, it appears that the tannery and latex factory are simply not ready to meet the sudden increase in demand, requests to resolve the problem have been sent at the Ministry of Industry and a meeting is planned in a few weeks.
Current roadblocks:
- Furniture: A large part of the furniture section will have to have its plans reworked, a communication problem saw the engineers think that steel would be the only material used in the furniture structures when in fact wood and plastic are planned as option in almost all cases and sometimes glass, stone, and cane with some other materials more rarely used, this led to several incidents during the test phase which saw equipment break, notably a Smotherboxes with glass side panels (to allow other participants to better enjoy the view) which broke causing multiple lacerations to the two testers (nothing permanent fortunately), a sex swing whose wooden pillars broke causing a fractured coccys and an X-cross whose attachments broke causing the cross to fall towards the front breaking the tester's nose.
- Artistic and highly personalized creation: it was decided that although a certain level of personalization is compatible with the concept of a mass production factory as well as creation with fine detail there is a level beyond which this is no longer the case and it would becomes more efficient to create ateliers which would take orders to respond to requests detailed enough so that our machines cannot carry them out or so out of the ordinary that they cannot be satisfied with the vast ranges of product already available.
