The time...has finally come.
The stars are right.
The constellations have aligned.
The pieces are in their places.
And the Most Glorious Democratic People's Republic of Guangchou, Light of All Nations, Defender of all Humanities, and Paradise on Earth, begins a work that has always been started, always been done in the background, but has never received any amount of funding or attention it needed to properly function and fulfill its purpose.
The talk is, naturally, about the construction of a national railway system.
And yet, while there is a stupendous amount of work to be done in its creation, from the factories that will produce the tracks and locomotives to the assignment of the workers and deference to the Unions to ensure local conditions are correctly utilized and circumvented, another, far more important, work is to be done.
The talk is, of course, about how the locomotives, train cars, and railway stations will look!
Unfortunately, some things of lesser concern must be prepared for, like the requirements for your trains, if you will use different locomotives for goods and people, and all that, but that can be pushed aside for the important things. Fashion.

There is nothing to be seen besides pure white like snow freshly fallen upon a canvas of nothingness.
And yet, a sound begins to toll out.
Steps.
Steps of shoes upon the ground, falling one after the other like a slow staccato.
Coming closer.
They sound out, one after the other, unto the ground, until...a heavyset man appears from the left, hands behind his back, wearing a black and white suit with a red tie. Dressed like one would to a funeral, or perhaps an important meeting.
Dressed like someone expecting to be heard.
And listened to.
The man unfolds his hands from behind his back and gestures slightly behind him with a minute twist of his torso, and his mouth opens.
A voice made from honeyed gravel, deep yet melodious and confident, emerges from his broad chest, and he speaks.
"The day is 1983," he says, and black numbers appear behind him in the white void. "The 8th September. Around the world, people begin waking up or going to bed on a Thursday like so many others, like so many to come."
The white void and black numbers are switched, with scenes of a rising sun casting its dazzling brilliance in hues of red, orange, and yellow, replaced by a setting sun crossing the horizon, casting the world into a black abyss.
Until lights appear, twinkling and warm, as a city is shown, the distant rumbling of thunder intermixed with the glimmer of tracers in the far distance, near enough to be worrisome, far enough to allow the people here to ignore the sounds with little willpower.
The faint shadow of a clock appears in the image, hanging over everything like a pale noose, ticking onward its endless circular path.
"It is 4:13 in the city of Baotou, and two weeks ago, the forces of the Democratic Chinese Republic left in a hurried evacuation, harrassed overhead by the soaring jets of both the People's Republic of China and Guangchou. They left behind a city of nearly a million people, fearful of their future and the forces marching in their direction."
Images of tanks and soldiers driving through streets deserted by civilians play in the background as the clock ticks on. One truck slows down and halts before disgorging soldiers by the dozens, many beginning to enter a large government building. In contrast, others fan out, the patches of the Guangchou Volunteer Battalion visible upon their uniforms, if the presence of armed women did not already hint at their allegiance. Then, the camera shifts abruptly from filming the soldiers a story below to the hulking forms of a quartet of Iron Tigers being driven down the street on a truck, oversized weaponry as visible as the scars of battle they bear proudly. Two of them hold a massive block of metal shaped like a shield, ugly craters pockmarking their surfaces, while another, equipped with an oversized rifle, looks straight at the person filming them.
They move on, and the video ends.
"The PRC and Guangchou took the city without a single fight a week after the DCR left, leaving nothing more than the bare minimum of a garrison to ensure public order and act as a tripwire if their enemy had set their retreat up as a feint."
A photo of a group of smiling men faded into existence over the void, each holding up a bowl filled with food as the flag of the PRC hung on the wall.
"They did not need to fight; the retreat was genuine. But they let through a truck, allowing it to enter the city, after being bribed not to look closer and ignore the vehicle's cargo. They likely had assumed these were looters rather than foreign agents, as they did not see any people other than the duo of driver and guard. A sensible precaution in these times, in these lands, they assumed. No need to be alarmed."
A CGI of the city began to appear, zooming out from the middle of Baotou, and a red dot began to bloom near the Yellow River.
"The task force of agents, soldiers, tanks, and Mecha racing after this truck was alarmed. They had finally found one of the missing nukes, and they were not willing to allow those who held it to do what they wished with it."
The red dot blooming near the river expanded, beginning to encompass a large portion of the city, rings appearing within and without. The words: 'Surface Detonation' are large and prominent above the image.
"They were here to stop them or die trying."
One after the other, the rings were marked.

The clock, always visible in the background, continued, nearly at midnight, and the soft tick of the clock grew louder, louder, louder until it was like a falling hammer unto an anvil.
And a second before midnight...it stopped.
"Yet, for Baotou, that future would not come to pass."
The scene changed, no longer a rendition of a burning and destroyed city but that of another morning sun rising above the city to the song of birds and the waking of nearly a million souls.
"Those who had tried to set this nuclear conflagration ablaze would meet a violent end, one from the task force sent after them, another by their hand. Baotou would not see the heart of a newborn sun bloom in its midst."
The scene, once showing a waking city, began to fall away slowly, then ever faster, until a large portion of China could be seen as if from orbit, browns, greens, and grey staring back indifferently to its silent observers.
And four lights glinted across the lands below.
Slowly, four black lines krept to the blooming balls of fire and smoke, drawing clinical estimations to each spot, names appearing as numbers rose.

The man appears again, hands once more folded behind their back.
"In the span of one hour, 1.4 million people were murdered. Two million more would follow in the next two years alone as radiation began to descend in the shape of a black rain falling across the nation, carrying the hidden, quiet, cruel horrors of radiation with it. Were it not for the political and humanitarian efforts spearheaded by Guangchou, distributing medical aid, opening corridors of evacuation, sending what medical personnel could be spared, and volunteers in the tens of thousands amidst an active civil war in the nation they were trying to aid, then the numbers would be fivefold, and the lives of those dying would have been hell on earth."
The man pauses as scenes of utter misery and torment begin to play behind him, some static pictures taken by reporters trying to immortalize the situation, others videos depicting scenes of medical personnel and helpers rushing everywhere in hospitals slowly emptying themselves as soldiers carried bodybags from rooms and hallways.
"And although it is unconfirmed, tales of triage were no stranger in those horrific days after the atrocities committed upon the Chinese peoples. And if they are real, then a painless death was perhaps the only mercy these men, women, and others could give their patients."
The man takes a breath as all these scenes begin to fade into the void once more, white beginning to creep into the world until all but the man was devoid of color once more.
"And were it not for the actions of one man aboard a submarine of the USSR, that mercy would have been given to far more if any at all. Vasily Aleksandrovich Arkhipov was all that stood between two naval officers serving on the same submarine as he and the launch of its nuclear complement. Upgraded with new electronic components, overhauled, and left to prowl the oceans once more a mere three months back, the submarine had not been in a position to inform its crew of the frantic scrambling of Guangchou's diplomats and politicians trying to ensure that what they were about to do would not come to pass. The work of these men, women, and others ensured that while millions of soldiers around the globe were readied as heads of state were ripped from their sleep or daily lives scrambled for answers; de-escalation would commence within a mere hour after the detonations. Blindingly fast in the political scene, glacial for those military commanders and pilots sitting at consoles and ready to sally out, leaving behind all to deliver retribution for assumed nuclear devastation on their homes."

The explosions of four nuclear bombs reverberated around the world like bells struck by deaf executioners, the sounds racing out from the cities they had murdered to be forever etched into the minds of those who heard them like gongs struck by demons wicked and cruel. And like four bells struck with little warning, those who listened to their sounds, be it by radiation or diplomats screaming about missing nuclear weaponry, the world reacted in ways that none could adequately describe when nuclear panic was once more at the forefront of the human races, even if one was far too young to sufficiently understand the dread its elder harbored.
Schools were closed by necessity in America as hundreds of thousands took their children from those cradles of learning or refused to let them go. At the same time, millions more brought the economy to a screeching halt when they refused to work in fear of dying away from family and perceived safety. In the USSR, not even the harshest censors were able to stop the biblical flood of pictures and videos from being played and seen by millions more, the sight and sounds of dying children accompanied by men, women, and more of all ages begging for the mercy of death as blisters and coal-like flesh stood side by side on mangled bones no longer able to hold meat well-done on bones charred and cracked alike by forces beyond human comprehension. Within those places farther from the information networks of humanity, the news reached still, and they reached people deeper yet, for the imagination is a beast that thrived within the dark and the murky waters of a people that were barely educated in the weapons brought to bear against the innocent in faraway lands.
But in all the world, in all the people who heard and saw the pictures and videos of the victims of this heinous crime, there was one thing that rang true in soul and mind alike: the fear that it could happen once more and that it could happen to them.
And a voice was joined by ten more, a hundred marching by thousands, until the cities of the leaders of the world were filled with throngs of humanity united in fear and righteous anger, and all clamored to be heard, to have that fate brought upon 1.4 million innocents not be repeated upon them and theirs. On the 7th of February of 1984, a treaty would be signed by all who held within their arsenals nuclear weaponry, an agreement made upon a mountain of corpses and the abject terror that the resultant mass graves employed liberally brought. Some would say it went too far, others not far enough, but it was a step for most. A step into a future where the scenes of Lanzhou would not haunt their streets.

With the advent of ever more sophisticated automation technologies and the growing material abundance that the workers of Guangchou have access to thanks to their labors, the need for yet more means by which those very same fruits can be distributed is required and thought up. One of those is the Durable Good Library, a means by which a selection of households, typically situated within an LSEEH's Service And Distribution Level, can gain access to goods that, while needed, are not typically required in everyday life, such as vacuums or a variety of tools. Within them, residents can "borrow" communally owned goods for use before returning them, all noted down in a computer where one notes name, date, time, and materials before returning them while also noting such down again. A system that requires trust from all involved but also one bolstered by the equipment within, as such has been specifically marked to be easy to track should thieves try to take advantage of the trust extended to them by the residents and workers of Guangchou.

There were certain things that you could not plan for, and some were there would always be a lack or surplus of things, things that could not be adequately supplied in economies that were driven by spreadsheets and human minds intending to bend efficiency before practicality, or chain profit into line before logistics.
For Guangchou, such things would not need a Campaign of a Thousand Little Things, at least for now, as the workers and the people managed to overcome paperwork and bureaucratic inertia as they built factory after factory dedicated to supplying the things that all needed, in great quantity and small, without being forced to wait for months for basic necessities.
A side effect of such a drive was the re-invigoratization of the restaurant and food industries with a glut of cheaper, yet qualitatively superior, wares they needed for everyday operations. One not felt quickly, but felt in time and tasted with fervor.

"The animated edutainment (educational entertainment) series "So Many Ways To Love" is a series created by a small team from within the Third District of Guangchou, and had, at its beginning, to struggle with budget allocations and a lack of talented animators, leading to the early-series janky-ness that nonetheless managed to be turned into a strength by the team with a simple yet ingenious trick. In the show, an Artificial Intelligence is sent to Earth by an unnamed space-faring nation to study and catalog humanity, with said AI kidnapping a trio of humans from the planet; a Guang, a West German, and a South African, to help it in its understanding by providing varied understanding and context to gathered information. The sections where the AI and the trio interact with each other are animated to the expected standard of Commiewood. However, that quickly changes once the narrative of each episode dips into the story segment. There, the style and quality is of noticeably lesser quality, but is outweighed by providing three distinct styles of visuals to the audience depending on who tells the story. The Guang visuals are akin to theater cut-outs moving across the screen, rigid poses, and limited action sets moving about; the West German has a blocky and functional appearance with plenty of pencil strokes and sketch visuals, while the South African shows their segments with watercolors and shapes draped in colors that coalesce and dance, rather than adhere to rigid forms. Each story is started with the AI asking a question about human life, typically something regarding inter-human interaction, and the trio answers in turn, engaging with both the AI and the audience to whom the stories are told. Said stories are typically centered around sexuality, gender roles, norms, and love in all its forms, relayed by the experiences of the trio, and heavily show functional relationships rather than the usual standard of entertaining and drama-filled relationships usually shown in TV that would be unimaginably toxic in the real world. It takes some finagling of Jungmin's schedule, but with some work, a few hours are shaken loose here and there, enough to take some lessons in some of the instruments he had always had some interest in; Bo Ni quick to learn the violin with a passion, one he and Mai happily support, even as his other kids do not seem to enjoy the musical lessons as much. Nonetheless, there is some good time to be had and some new developments to be explained. Daiyu has officially told Jungmin, Mai, and his siblings that they do not wish to be addressed as He and Him anymore but as They and Them. They seemed far more confident after saying such, like a burden had been taken from their shoulders, a burden both of his parents had noticed but not talked about to allow them to come to their conclusion and solution themselves. With CyPac being what it is and the infrastructure and early designs for rockets and the space program mostly finalized, suggesting an international collaboration with CyPac member nations to take up funding (and gain recognition, flag placements, or personnel allocations in return) could make this venture far more digestible for Guangchou.
(Funding functions as a way to gain Space Actions. The more Actions you put in, the more CyPac put in if something is taken. For example, every two Actions at 50% would gain you another. Every tenth at 10% would do the same.)

"What'cha lookin' at?" Wei Long asked, poking their head into my room, disturbing the comfortable gloomy darkness with the harsh lights from the corridor outside, stabbing me directly like a lance of legend.
"Close the damn door," I hissed quickly, shutting my eyes as the door closed with Long stepping inside. Then, taking a sip of my tea against the migraine I had for the last month, I allowed the sound from the TV before me to wash over the silence before I answered. "I am watching a live broadcast of the US Vote. They say the next President is basically guaranteed to be Jimmy Carter. Mathematical impossibility for him to lose right now. He's giving an impromptu speech," I add, causing Long to hum in appreciation of my answer, hopefully letting me nurse my hurting head in continued relative silence.
"Isn't Chen doing the same?" Nope, they were apparently in one of their chatty moods.
"Yes, but we need some redundancy to ensure translations are accurate. Can't have one agent with an agenda translating a statement of peace into a declaration of war, can we?"
"Instead, we have two?" Long quipped, making me snort as I looked at the screen where Carter had just finished a sentence and stared at his wife.
"Well," Yang began to speak as half a world away, a man looked at his wife, soon to be the First Lady of the US.
Years had been spent attaining this position, with bartering and trade even within his party only barely getting him the support needed amidst the uncertain times tearing at the unity of the United States. Even with a close race, one close enough that many among his opposition will call for a recount, he had still won the presidency, intent on healing the rifts and cracks forming within the nation, setting it on a path to reconciliation and renewal. If all went well, he would not leave his successor a nation assailed by unrest, protests, crime, and extremists of every stripe spewing vile rhetoric and hatred on the streets and news. A small taste of ash entered his mouth as he remembered that he had to completely ignore the issue of the Lupi to win, every advisor telling him that speaking positively of the controversy, or at all, would not get him the voters that mattered, only those that would already vote for him anyway.
Looking back at Rosalynn, he smiled. Without her, he didn't know how he could have managed the months leading up to the vote, and his subconsciousness acted on the love before his conscious mind could react, a hand already lifting itself to grab her hand, a small gesture of intimacy shared between them.
The piece of metal fired from 1.3 kilometers away enters his head, passing through the thin outer layer of flesh to start piercing his skull, bone offering no protection from the projectile's kinetic energy. The nerves responsible for noting the pain and notifying the corresponding sectors of the brain to send their signals, scream at the hole that suddenly appeared within the previously healthy wall of cells. Said signals fail to reach their intended destinations, the neurons responsible already pulped by pressure exerted by the now malformed piece of metal, bone shards of his skull adding to the destruction as they slice through his brain, turning once vibrant fat, water, salt, and energy into a mush being dragged out the other side of his head. Thanks to the large hole, there is little reason to suspect the death of Jimmy Carter, all but assured to be the 40th President of the United States of America, was anything but instant.
Rosalynn Carter stands, sprinkled with her now dead husband's brain, blood, and bone fragments, a proud smile slowly fading as she realizes what has happened.
People watching the event worldwide, especially in the US, look on in utter shock.
The crowd watching the speech during their celebration of the win of Carter begins to panic as the security agents nearby realize what just happened.
1.3 kilometers away, a man leaves, the information gathered from the clues left behind pointing at a black man with communist sympathies in New Orleans.
Two months later, Ronald Reagan became the 40st President of the United States, as the recount demanded by Republicans confirmed him to be what was requested.
