A brief stop in the bazaar made sure that they had enough basic equipment for the next couple of days, which was how long the recovery of the necklace was supposed to take.
"Of course, the best laid plans," Taylor grumbled.
"Oft times go astray," Colin finished. "All too true in many cases. Typically a sign of insufficient contingency preparation."
The group had simply walked (or floated, in Vicky and Melissa's case) to the area in question, the section of The Lady's Quarter that bordered The Twilight Quarter. From where they were standing, they could see the peaceful and gloomy graveyard where the people from several dozen different religions buried their dead in accordance with their customs and the laws of the Ring.
In this portion of The Lady's Quarter, the houses, once grand, were run down, dilapidated, and abandoned, if they still stood. No squatters or homeless sheltered there, which implied that it was dangerous for people to stay in the area too long.
"I suspect undead roam the area after dark," Colin mused.
"Zombies and skeletons? Yuck," Takara said.
"Or worse," Dennis added. "Wraiths, specters, ghosts."
"Least of your problems," another voice added.
The group looked towards the sound. The newcomer was a young man, about Dennis' height with long blond hair. He wore a red duster over a black shirt and black pants, and well worn boots protected his feet from the hazards of the road. His right arm appeared to be mechanical, while his left hand was flesh and blood.
"And you are?" Colin asked, interposing himself between the Wards and the man.
"Peace, I'm on your side," the young man said. "Was told we had a shared goal. I'm Edward Elric, here investigating a matter for the Honorable Guild of Alchemists and Artificers. And there's no way I'd try and bluff my way when someone She considers important is here." He looked briefly at Melissa and grinned.
"I have a fair idea of who you all are, but I'd suggest we retire to what's left of that house over there, and we can get to know each other a bit better."
"Agreed," Colin said with a nod.

The house in question was mostly intact, with a few windows busted out, and some of the thatch a bit thin, but the building was stone, and the door thick and heavy wood of some kind.
Everyone was soon sitting around, while both Ed and Colin kept looking out the window, although Ed had produced a camp stool from somewhere for himself. "Yeah, I'm here after this Avanth the Serpent character," Edward admitted. "The guild wants him for violations of their code and charter. Seems he's been stealing from other alchemists and publishing the works as his own. He's also pursuing
dangerous research."
"I hate to ask," said Dennis, "but how dangerous?"
"Dangerous enough to piss Her off if he manages to accomplish anything," was the brusque reply.
"And we decided to come along on this field trip. Why?" Dean stated.
"I think it was because it would help a friend," Chris said. "And it would be something different to do. Got to admit it has been that."
"How old are all of you, anyway?" Ed asked. "He," he said, pointing at Colin, "is practically an old man. The rest of you seem like you should still be in school, or going through a trade apprenticeship."
"I am old enough to ignore that comment," Colin said, an irritated note to his voice. "All but Takara and Dinah are in their late teens."
"OK, it looks like you can handle yourself, as can the Arachne. I'm not gonna even ask about someone who can get away with dressing like The Lady. One of you looks like a bard, but despite being told
who you are I haven't got a clue what the rest of you can
do. I'm not here to babysit a bunch of girls and schoolboys."
"I'm an artificer of sorts," Chris stated. "I'm used to working with higher technology, but when in Rome…"
"You work with what you've got," Ed noted. He looked at Dean. "And you?"
"Something of a fighter, more of an empath," Dean said. "A fair amount of practical experience with my Powers, and some in melee combat."
"Cool. So you could sense someone approaching?"
"If I concentrate a bit, yes. And a few other tricks."
"How about the floating blondie?"
"I hit things hard enough to wreck them, pick up very heavy things, set them down, throw them, and fly as much as I can," Vicky stated.
Ed nodded. "And what about you?" he asked Takara.
"Oh, nothing much," the girl said with an impish grin just before two water tentacles gave Ed a wet willy.
"Ack! Pfft! Augh!" Ed shouted and spit as the watery tentacles tried to power wash his ears. And then he became dead still as a ball of fire hovered in front of his face. "OK, that's cool."
"Before you start," Amy said, "I'm a healer. I can do more than just heal, but I mainly keep it to healing. I've also been called 'Favored of Tamara.'" With that she held up her left hand with Tamara's ring on it.
"And yes," Dennis added, "I am a newly minted bard. Don't expect me to sing. And I'm Favored of Hlal Quicksilver."
"And that leaves me," Taylor added. She shifted to her dragon born form. "I am Naurelin, Favored of Bahamut and Tiamat."
One of Ed's eyebrows arched. "Ok, so you're telling me that three of you are thought-to-be-extinct mythical creatures of varying powers because only other dragons can be called 'Favored of' one the draconic gods?"
"Succinctly put," Colin noted. "But there are
four dragons in this group."
At Colin's cue, Takara transformed, and began swimming in the air, almost tying herself into a knot.
Ed sat down on his camp stool. "Oh." Then his face formed a gleeful grin. "Oh, even if the rest of you are tag-alongs, Avanth is going to get hit
so hard…"
"I do have a question for you," Dennis asked. "What can
you do?"
"Hmm, I've been called many things," Ed answered. "Mainly, I'm an alchemist for hire. My master trained me in a wide range of skills, from alchemy to martial arts, and turned me and my brother loose on the world. The guild likes to offer me jobs like this before asking for outside help."
He stood up and clapped his hands together. At his feet, a glowing spot appeared and a spear began to grow from the ground, eventually reaching seven feet in length.
"Impressive," Colin stated.
"It comes in handy," Ed admitted. "OK, you lot are not what you seem. Cool. What's your beef against Avanth?"
"We're recovering a moonstone necklace from some of his minions," Taylor said. "And I think we might be performing a rescue."
"A rescue?"
"I'm sensing a dragon nearby, a
really young one."
"So that's what's grating on my nerves," Dennis said.
"Yeah," added Amy, "I'm picking up on it, too."
"Hold on, wait a minute," Ed interjected. "Aren't dragons supposed to be extinct, or nearly so? Present company excepted."
Taylor nodded. "There's not enough left in our world for short term survival of the species, let alone any subspecies." Taylor had done some research into the short and long term viability of species and the number of individuals required. The cold equations basically said that dragons were sliding quietly into the dark.
Then she remembered a quote attributed to Lung. "I am a dragon, your argument is invalid."
"So how is there a young dragon here on the Ring?" Ed asked.
"I think that's what we're going to find out," Colin stated.

Fountain woke up out of a fitful nap. She hadn't had much luck finding food, as the humans and nasty things in the cellars here had taken to locking things up securely. Even the rats, whom she didn't like but could work with, were getting ready to move out of the cellars.
We do not know of a passageway that is large enough for you to pass through that leads to safety, the rats had communicated to her. She assumed that they meant her safety, and the way they were leaving, into the tunnels and sewers, wouldn't be safe for her.
They had, at least, brought her a small sack for her precious few belongings.
Then she realized
what had awakened her.
There were multiple dragons nearby! And one felt familiar.
She began stuffing her few treasures into the sack and decided how she would exit the tunnels. She knew where the exit was, and could figure out when there wouldn't be anyone guarding it. It was getting out in those few moments that would be difficult.
Or the dragons would pick her up and take her from this place. She wanted to be super sneaky and follow them out, except dragons could sense other dragons nearby so being sneaky wouldn't work.
She did know one thing, though, and that she was going to get out of this yucky, stinky smelling place with shouting men and evil toad things.

"There're eight, maybe nine others down there, besides Avanth and his henchthings," Ed explained while the group listened. "They take turns watching the not-so-secret secret entrance to the place. Occasionally, one comes out to smoke. That's how I found the place, the smell of whatever he's smoking is
horrible."
"Are there any other exits to the place?" Colin asked. He was watching the area across the road with a pair of binoculars. "I note at least three relatively discreet chimneys amongst the rubble."
"There used to be, but an altercation involving the previous occupants and some Giff mercenaries resulted in a rather large explosion, which collapsed a portion of the tunnels and cellars," Ed replied. "Haven't seen anything suggesting new digging since then."
"I can hear a couple of people arguing," Dennis interrupted. "And boy whoever is smoking that stuff had better get his money back from his dealer." The stench was easily noticed by everyone in the abandoned house.
"So how do we want to gain entrance?" Taylor asked. "I can think of a few different ways."
"Let's use what we've got to our advantage," Dean added. "Naurelin has a weakness breath weapon, and Helbrede has a sleep one. Gas the entrance with one or the other, wrap them up, and question them."
"I was going to use some sleep gas," Ed admitted. "Alchemy does have its uses." He held three glass balls filled with a lavender liquid. "These'll break fairly easily, the liquid vaporizes, and they'll be out for hours."
"I also have one other question," Colin said. "How do you want them?"
"Alive if possible," Ed stated. "However, if they're going to fight back, then it becomes a matter of self defense. They just might get desperate if they see miss Junior Lady of Pain there." He hitched his thumb at Melissa. "Or they might surrender."
"We'll lead off with the sleep gas option," Colin continued. "From Helbrede. We'll save yours for later, as it appears to be easier to limit."
Amy nodded in agreement. "I can live with that. I may not have as many spells to play with as Naurelin does, but I do have a few. The question I have is how do I get close enough to use my breath weapon."
Taylor gave her a devious grin. "You use shape shifting to get close, transform, and let them have it," she explained. "We move in after you."

On cue, as the rest of the group stayed in the cover of the ruined house, they watched Helbrede, currently shapeshifted as an example of a large local insect, flitted her way to the rubble pile behind the 'secret' entrance. Already standing out front was the one guy known for smoking something obnoxious. And it didn't take long before someone else came out and they started arguing.
With their attention focused on each other, they never noticed the insect shapeshift into something far more menacing and dangerous.
She cleared her throat to get their attention. "Excuse me, but you really shouldn't be smoking. You don't want to know what that's doing to your lungs." Neither minion got a chance to speak as she gently exhaled, and both of them dropped into a deep slumber.
Climbing quietly off the pile of rubble, she aimed her muzzle down the entryway, took a very deep breath. And fully exhaled, filling the entryway and its immediate environs as full as she could with her sleeping gas breath weapon.
When done, she touched each of the sleeping minions with her tail, putting them into a far deeper sleep. "They'll keep for a day," she quietly rumbled.
Colin and Edward were already trussing up the minions and hauling them over to the barn. Edward had placed his hands together, and the shortswords the men carried became a pair of manacles on their wrists.
"Most effective," Colin stated as he added extra large zip cuffs to their wrists. "Give the gas a minute to dissipate, and then we'll go in."
