Orc Quest; or, A Critical Examination of Agency Through in Interactive Fiction (Warcraft)

I also don't get how the massively transactional nature of Frostwolf shamanism doens't lead to disillusionment with the Elementals. In one of the books Thrall does use Dark SHamanism, he forces an out of control elemental to stop, and feels bad about it, but I can imagine, for example, your house in a flood and you asking the elements to yknow not flood stuff and them either saying 'lolno' or asking what you're going to do in return. Given the elementals are so capricious, half of Shamanism seems to be bribing them with the magical or spiritual equivalent of chocolate.
Its one of those things that we're just meant to accept uncritically, despite the fact that this is meant to be a give and take relationship.

Shaman gives them stuff and ensures that their materium side forms are treated with respect, in exchange the elemental does things for them/doesn't fuck their shit up.

However with ones like Ragnaros as a prime example, some elementals are just dicks.

Slavery is still no bueno, but people should have the right to both self defence and respect.

Frostwolf shamanism is no good. More annoyingly, Thrall's sitting in full support of it...Well, there's several problems- the so-called 'Dark Shamanism' being politically no-go as long as Thrall's around complicates our ability to develop Dark Shamanism traditions or ideals.
That's not really the take away, its not that Frost Wolf Shamanism doesn't work, Grok just has some issues with it. However, he also has issues with Dark Shamanism, and honestly we should. The for lack of better terminology, reverential style of Shamanism has its merits and honestly I prefer it immensely to the style of enslave the elements to do what you want.

A development of dark shamanism and reverential shamanism might be best in the direction of "practical" shamanism. Reverential Shamanism makes sense if you are defacto at the elements mercy, dark shamanism makes sense when they are at yours, however neither is the case so the best strategy (as far as I can tell) is to try and take a toned down version of the respect/bribery of reverential shamanism and combine it with the no nonsense of dark shamanism. No enslavement just don't feel guilty if you have to stop a fire elemental from setting everyone on fire.

A part of me wonders at the idea of mixing Light usage with Shamanism. The idea being something of setting up elementals as being both fed on a low level across the tribe, but for the shamen to do something more akin to Dark Shamanism, draining the Elemental's power. Almost using the Elementals as a way to focus the might of the Tribe into a few exceptional individuals.
?

I'm really not sure what on earth you are talking about. Orks don't feed on elementals and why would we want to focus the might of anyone into a few individuals...and what the hell does that have to do with the light?

Wasn't there a quest where you destroy a phylactery at the bottom of a pond in wotlk? That's at least something. I've always favored the middle of nowhere strat for the reasons highlighted. Can't trust my own side, and if I lose, probably the place I'm at is lost so I shouldn't keep it with me either.

Just don't pick somewhere sentimental unless everyone who ever knew you is dead.

He bears a harness of leather and wood, and with ceremony he sets it on you, speaking a benediction of Draenor, fastening the banner pole to your back with the harness and belt.

You steps out to the camp, your warband saluting as you stand beside the other Blademasters, each of your banners flying in the wind.

The firepit in the centre of the camp blazes and you feel the Spirits gather. You see your father's eyes, his gaze, fel-tainted but proud. You see him through the conflagration, you hear his voice from across the world.

"Rise, Blademaster!"

How does the quote go again?

"A blade! A blade! A Burning Blade!"

Admittedly the Light thing I'll have to scrap it was ideas of like, enshrining the elementals into positions of respect and whatnot, but in practice that's not really requiring ideas of the Light.
And sure, Orcs don't feed on Elementals. The idea, however, is that the Elemental gets to take a little bit from the community of Orcs, but then has it's power expended via 'champions' who keep the Elemental's power in check, while also getting to be the ones who actually do the wielding of the power for their people.
I'd almost imagine it like what the Dark Iron Dwarves have going with Ragnaros, albeit with the Dark Irons in control instead of the setup of Ragnaros being in charge.

But, do to that, we'll need to actually MEET the Dark Iron Dwarves and get a good look at their society, ideally without actually getting on the bad side of the Dark Irons or Ragnaros.

The Twilight's Hammer is also a potential advancement option, but IDK how precisely their stuff with the ascendants work.

Some elementals can be treated with like normal people, just pay them to do a job.

Others need to be beaten until they understand that just because forest fires, floods, and storms are natural that doesn't give them the right to do it in a populated area.

As for the light, that works by just believing in yourself hard enough or something I think. So just believe in your sword arm enough that you'll strike true and use the light supplementary with the elements if possible.

That'd work in a system where something like worship of an elemental gave it strength, but that's not really the sort of co-dependent relationship elementals require.

And yeah, the light has nothing really to do with elementalism. If you were to integrate the light it'd likely be to empower elementals of fire or spirit, since they're the constituit parts of the light.

Emmm...Ragnaros gives the Dark Irons nothing...

Like literally nothing he's not empowering them or anything, and that's not a personality thing that's just not really how elementals or even magic in wow works. The sort of thing you want can be done with arcane magic via things like the sun well, but not really the elements.*

At most you're basically just describing the system that currently exists, (elements are given respect and power and in turn empower specific individuals) just expanding how many people have to give respect mandatorily and calling them champions instead of Shamen.

*Ascendants works by draining an elemental's power into an individual to turn them into a conduit for that element. Permanent ascension seems to drive a non elemental insane, (at least whenever non Twilight hammer people tried to replicate it). Of course this doesn't matter to the twilight hammer since insanity is essentially the bare minimum requirement to join in the first place, but its a pretty big problem for everyone else.

It is possible to beseech elements to ascend you temporarily, which you can do without going bonkers, although its a major deal and not to be done lightly.

As for the light, that works by just believing in yourself hard enough or something I think. So just believe in your sword arm enough that you'll strike true and use the light supplementary with the elements if possible.
Basically confidence that you are doing the right thing makes it work, which is why people who are caught up in the light tend to be very stubborn. Since the light generates positive feel good emotions, as long as you can internally justify your actions, the light will keep working for you, hence why people like the canon scarlet crusade can always exist despite the abhorrent shit they get up too.

Grok'll have to search the answer to it wherever he goes. One of them will be having to meet another elemental or spirit that's nothing like Proudbeak or Forneus.

But my read is that water is liable to lead into either healing or some sort of water attack that probably won't be all that effective more because Grok won't know what he's doing in terms of things like healing or practical uses of conjuring water (besides the obvious like slacking his thirst). And Earth is more about defenses, like raising walls or becoming more sturdy. Grok likely will appreciate that, though I also imagine there's a REASON Blademasters went Air-Fire for their elements traditionally.
Broadly speaking, fire is the most offensive, because it burns stuff obviously, air is more to do with movement and mobility, because again air moves about, water is about healing and sustenance, becaus peoplel drink it, and earth is about solidity and protection. There are of course ways you can do stuff with each one, for example you could do sustenance with fire perhaps to build on fire's ideal as a cooking fire or torch etc, similarly, water is also about tides and floods so that can be offensive too.

However, these would also be difficult to do unless you were already a skillful shaman with a holistic view of elemental stuff. It would also require elementals who were willing to do such things.
the so-called 'Dark Shamanism' being politically no-go as long as Thrall's around complicates our ability to develop Dark Shamanism traditions or ideals.
To be clear, Shamanism in the Horde isn't as doctrinally fixed as this. The Earthen Ring hasn't emerged yet as the shaman police, and FOrneus has shaken that doctrine even more. Dark Shamanism is a meta descriptor, people don't call it that in universe. There'll be a variety of magical traditions in teh horde, on a sliding scale from the Frostwolf 'Reverential Shamanism' to for examplel the 'Basically a Warlock' Burning Blade shamanism. As such, you can do what you want, but there will be various consequences for various actions.

Yea this is possible, but it all stems from doctrine. At the end of the day, waht is the relationship you have with the ELements? Is it respectful and reverential? Do you regard them as essentially animals to be herded or resources to be exploited? Or are you fundamentally hostile to them and seek to dominate and enslave them? There's certainly a worst of both worlds option around here. For example, the exploitation thing probably would produce the weakest shaman because the elements they work with aren't empowered through sacrifice and also aren't enslaved and made to work harder etc
As for the light, that works by just believing in yourself hard enough or something I think. So just believe in your sword arm enough that you'll strike true and use the light supplementary with the elements if possible.
Pretty much yes. However, mixing magical traditions is problematic for various reasons established in the previous chapters
Emmm...Ragnaros gives the Dark Irons nothing...
He does seemt o empower them? I assume they wouldn't be so fire-themed if Rag wasn't' giving them a bit of a boost. Also there are fire elementals hanging about, so presumably these are on loan from Rag
hence why people like the canon scarlet crusade can always exist despite the abhorrent shit they get up too.
Remember though that most Scarlets aren't doing hte abhorrent stuff like torturing Forsaken for no reason. If you're a heavily propogandised Scarlet who's just fighting hte Scourge normally, you're probably feeling great about the Light and you're feeling good about your own contribution. Say then, for example, a pack of undead jump out and murder your friends and tehn start eatingt their corpses or hauling htem off etc, do you really care whether they're forsaken or scourge? No, you're going to go smite them

Respectful and mutual.

Those that deal with us fairly and without bugging out I'd want to compensate well for their services and yes express some reverence for the wonder that is the natural world and the elements there in.

However, no matter how wonderful it is that doesn't mean I don't want the right to stop elementals runamok. First port of call should be to go "stop can we solve this without you freaking out" since it might not be their fault, maybe someone's polluting them, but if they're just being a jackarse or refuse to listen, then we shouldn't feel bad about stopping that.

While I'm hypothesising Forneaus's march disrupted the elements of all types for miles, he certainly didn't care about walking over them.

So yeah.

Not hostile to them, since that's just foolish, you shouldn't be hostile to a group innately, just as you shouldn't be innately hostile to a mountain, but toning down the reverential side of things a bit and establishing more of a give and take.

He does seemt o empower them? I assume they wouldn't be so fire-themed if Rag wasn't' giving them a bit of a boost. Also there are fire elementals hanging about, so presumably these are on loan from Rag
mmm they've seemingly always been fire-themed, but the fire elementals seem to more be overseers rather than on loan as it were.

Yeah, but I was talking about people like canon Whitemane who kept on going past the point of death (multiple times) because blizzard are hacks she believed she was doing the right thing, even though the number of times the organisation got smashed, the dreadlord and other assorted nonsense would imply otherwise.

Reminds me of when teh WFB dwarves declared a grude against a mountain because there was a landslide lol
Kinda :D

In this scenario, if its just a mountain doing mountain things, what are you going to do. If the mountain maliciously attacked for no reason that's another. If there was an actual reason and we can try to talk it out then, well preferably do that

Lordaeron Turn 7
Lordaeron Turn 7

"Anderhol is but the beginning!" Dathrohan roared to the mass of cheering soldiers before him, "Soon, our armies, made ever stronger by our faith in the Light and by the fellowship of our allies, will sweep over this land like a bright flame! We will bright about our new world, a world of righteousness, a world of purity! Rise up my brothers! Rise up humanity!"

The army cheers again, their roars are heard across the valley, and you don't doubt even through the blight cloud around the ruins of the capital city, the Forsaken within might even be able to hear the roaring and clashing of weapon upon shield.

There are fewer and fewer of the blue coats among the warriors, you notice. Almost all the soldiers are wearing the red of the Scarlet Crusade, though perhaps some reds are more ochre or brown, rather than the glorious bloody coats of the Red Guards. There are a few Paladins in silver, a few Elves or Dwarves in other colours, but even the Crusades allies have begun to wear the same heraldry as the Crusaders do.

The army is preparing to march. Previously Dathrohan had been sending out patrols and small detachments to destroy Scourge holdouts across the Tirasfal Glades, unable to most his main host due to the unbreakable defences of the Undercity. Had he moved, the Grand Crusader risked his supply lines from the north, which might be assaulted by the Forsaken.

Now however, with your conquest of Anderhol, the situation is much changed. Supplies can instead be brought up through the passes to the south and Alterac, which though not necessarily friendly territory, is morso than Tirasfal, and Dathrohan now intends merely to leave a 'tripewire' force in place around the Undercity while the rest of his force moves on, pushing into the Plaguelands, as well as other locations.

Dathrohan continues speaking for a while as you stand there. You're a demonstration really, just like Prince Bran of Ironforge or a few elven emissaries, a show of solidarity against the Scourge. It's curious, you think, that Dathrohan calls upon his oldest supporters among the sceptics of the Alliance among his troops, those who followed Mograine and him at first, who upheld Lordaeron, rather than the policies of King Terenas Menethil who had advocated for an internationalist approach, setting Lordaeron not on it's own, but as the lynchpin of the Alliance.

But eventually the speech comes to an end, and you're summoned to Dathrohan's tent.

Alone, the Grand Crusader's manner is much different. You'd heard that he wasn't merely opposed to non-humans but actively hostile, yet speaking to him now you sense none of that. There's still the curious power behind his eyes, that same feeling you got from Tirion, presumably his abilities as a paladin, but otherwise he seems actually pleasant, affable even, the older man smiles, the sort of smile you'd expect from a tolerant patriarch.

"The Crusade has much to thank you for, Grok'mash Fireblade." Dathrohan begins, "Not only have you taken a powerful bastion, but you've demonstrated a previously unknown capacity. The Dwarves tend toward a slow sort of warfare, the Elves are faster yes but they fight lightly and retreat, and our own forces, save perhaps our cavalry, simply don't have the sheer individual power that you demonstrated at Anderhol. Taelan Fordring has reported much to me, and much more I've guessed, but again, I thank you, young Blademaster."

You bear your clan's banner proudly, and many of the paladins in the Crusade have approach you and even congratulated you, speaking of the honour and skill of the Old Horde's Blademasters, and how they'd welcome such an ally now. It brings you joy, a warmth deep in your heart, something to stir the soul, that your people, and your own skill, are so valued, even among your once-enemies.

"Tomorrow I intend to call a council." Dathrohan continues, "But I would first speak with you regarding several matters. Firstly, your value is clear, and I have ordered the quartermasters and arcanists to make themselves available to you, within reason. Equip yourselves as you see fit, you have used all that we've given you well."

"I thank you in turn," you reply cordially, "But what presses most on me is a lack of reinforcements, I have spoken previously on this matter with several people, but I would have orcs for my warband, not merely humans. There is value in the different skills, but our success comes also from our differences."

Dathrohan nods sagely, "That may be so, but let us speak of that another time. For now, I move to my second point: You have committed yourself to the Crusade, but your value may not necessarily lie in simple battle against the Scourge. Let me tell you what I plan, we must eventually seek entry to Naxxramas. From there Kel'Thuzad directs all the Scourge's forces in Lordaeron and beyond, and breaking that control is essential to our success. Whether we intend a full attack or merely a raid is something I've thought much on, but for our purposes now, we know that we'll need certain magical items and reagents to force a way inside the necropolis. The Kirin Tor have devised a way through the magical wards placed upon Naxxramas' rune portals, based on old tricks and study of Araj the Summoner's spellwork, another thing we have to thank you for."

"But the necessary reagents are unavailable?" you enquire.

Dathrohan nods again, "Indeed. Quite literally, a king's ransom in some cases. We require a large number of Arcane Crystals for example, which can only be found in the richest of Thorium veins south in Khaz Modan, and then only rarely. We don't have the resources to trade for such items, and even if we did, it serves us little to beggar ourselves and our allies when we could rather take such things from the Scourge. The Scholomance, the Scourge's school of necromancy, as well as the ziggurats of Stratholme are likely to have at least some of what we need, and I intend to assault these locations. You may be instrumental in this, you have proved at least that a smaller, more skilful and powerful force, might triumph where a legion cannot."

"You would have me lead my folk against these bastions?" you ask. Considering it, you'd be willing to do so, but it would be a heavy burden, you'd put your people into harm for an uncertain reward. But that was war after all. "If they are as formidable as you say, I will need reinforcements even more urgently."

"Perhaps." replied Dathrohan, "But as I say, you may have greater value in other locations, and against other foes, performing actions which my army cannot, for various reasons. In this way, you would free my own forces, allowing me to deploy them to these missions instead. We receive resupply from the south now, and our columns are beset by a lose confederation of bandits, traitors, and elements of the Alteraci military. My troops cannot track them well enough, and lack the strength to defeat their strongholds. There are orcish clans in Alterac, and you might serve us well in tackling this problem."

You reflect immediately that visiting Alterac was one of your secondary objectives on this campaign. Jubei'thos' last known location had been in Alterac, and you'd intended to track down his resting place, or at least he had before his resurrection. Would you be able to investigate this matter while tracking the bandits Dathrohan referred to? Perhaps not, and certainly your honourbound commitment to the Crusade overruled any personal matters.

"Comparably, you might journey to Arathi, where again the Syndicate hold certain areas, but more importantly there are ogre tribes, the Boulderfist, a curious name…"

"They were the first to emerge on Draenor." you supply, "Their foes, the Stonemaul were the second, they innovated by tying rocks to sticks instead of just holding them."

Dathrohan's eyes shine as he smirks, "How quaint! In any case, they've established settlements. I care little for them and their affairs, but we need the land, and they, and certain Orcish settlements in the area, threaten our hegemony over Lordaeron. This is our land, and you might prevent bloodshed in the removal of these groups."

You don't fancy your chances in diplomacy with ogres, but you supposed you could certainly try.

"Lastly are two more investigatory missions. To our west, Silverpine and Gilneas represent untapped resources and land we could use in our fight against the Scourge, and the recolonisation of Lordaeron after it's Scourging. Similarly, the High Elves remain aloof, despite their devastation, and again we could use their power in our war. Both Gilneas and Silvermoon are beset with troubles, and a small, flexible force could do much there."

Dathrohan sits back. "I want to move on Naxxramas within a year, longer than that will allow the Scourge to retrench itself, and our spoiling actions will become less and less effective. Some time will be taken travelling to whichever location you choose, but I anticipate several months of essentially independent action. I don't require a decision from you now, but I would have your choice at the council tomorrow."

Choose 1:

[ ] Plaguelands

The Warband has proven itself in special operations unachievable by most Scarlet forces, continue these actions, assaulting and infiltrating highly defended Scourge targets across the Plaguelands, battling to bring the war to a successful conclusion, and taking part directly in operations in the Scarlet's preparation to take Naxxramas.

[ ] The Syndicate
Turn southward to Alterac and Hillsbrad, pitting yourself against the bandits of the Syndicate, using the Warband's mobility and strength to defeat the numerous groups of rebels and former Alteraci soldiery. While in Alterac you might also investigate the Old Horde's holdings there, but this will not be your primary purpose.

[ ] Remnants of Draenor
The Boulderfist ogres, as well as numerous remnants of Orcish clans which hadn't gone west to Kalimdor with Thrall, inhabit the Arathi Highlands. The Scarlet Crusade desires their removal or neutralisation, and you feel best placed to achieve this.

[ ] The Howling
Silverpine Forest presents a relatively uncorrupted territory for the Scarlet Crusade to expand into, yet from all reports the forest is cursed. Similarly, Gilneas could prove extremely valuable to the Crusade if it's resources are deployed appropriately. Seek out the source of Silverpine's corruption, and try and get yourself through the Gilnean Wall to beg the aid of the dour folk who shelter there.

[ ] Shattered Sun
Quel'thalas, the Eternal Realm, lies broken and bloodied after the Scourge's invasion. Subsequently, Trolls have swept in from the Amani lands, and Dathrohan seeks both more information, and the resources of either or both parties in his war. Journey to that land and see what might be done.

[ ] Write in
You propose a different deployment for the Warband.

So having reached a natural conclusion to the middle part of Arc 2, we're going to do a mini arc away on an extended mission, which will be a little bit more narrative rather than the usual action choices etc. After that it'll be back to the Scourge War, and then finally Alterac to wind up the Lordaeron Arc, and then off presumably to some other place.

If you're doing write ins discuss them with me first. Grok came to fight the Scourge, so anything written in has to be in support of that.

Keep in mind the different reasons for particular places. There's Grok's own development, the prosecution of the Scourge War, and finally the greater good of Azeroth and it's peoples more generally. Obviously in some places there'll be particular advantages which can't be found in other places.

For the moment just discuss things, then I'll open voting tomorrow, which will remain so for about a week I think.

Note, I'm doing to be reviving my guideline of 10% of thread participation. There are at least a hundred of you actively watching this quest, I expect to see more than 4 people voting, which is what we had in Lordaeron 6. One of the things that really kills quests is a lack of audience participation. Imagine you were the DM of a DnD game and of your players, just no one said anything and you spend 3 hours just talking to yourself. So far this quest is being carried by 3 or 4 people, you can do better. If you want to just discuss stuff rather than necessarily making plans or voting, that's ok, but I do expect to see participation.

mmm.

Crap meaningful decision making! NOOOOOOOOO!

I will say Gilneas despite being interesting is probably not the best idea given Genn Greymane was one of the prime advocates for just killing all the orcs post second war.

I'm getting quite sleepy

This however is of interest to Vok'Fonn.

There's also the potential that we might be able to get some of the reagents for Naxx here.

Assuming its based off of the attunement, then the maximum reagents required are 5 arcane crystals, 2 nexus crystals and a righteous orb per person.

And to clarify @FractiousDay when you say that it won't be your primary purpose, are we to take from this that the expectation is this isn't to be the primary time to investigate what happened here?

I wish I had a fortune teller mission just to spoil me on the picks.
Quite, toss some herbs on the fire and decide for us :p

mmm there is an argument that we can go from Arathi up to Alterac, since the syndicate is a major problem in both, while the ogres are only in one.

We might also run into the survivors of Stormegrad there, but I imagine they won't be happy to see us.

Otherwise the orcs there seem to be ones who became majorly depressed by the death of Doomhammer at the internment camp in the area.

I admit there's a fair bit of me that wants to do this because its interesting. It'd probably be a major cluster fuck though. The Amani under Zul'jin probably ain't interested in talking to an orc. Not the elves either for that matter.

Me too. It's a place to develop arcane knowledge too though the main problem maybe the forest trolls whose leader isn't too happy with what the current main horde does.
I mean he's not really happy with anyone who isn't Amani in general TBH.

@FractiousDay nother question, Darion and co be tagging along where we go as the official Scarlet Crusade representatives or are Redpath and co going back to the rest of the crusade?

Maybe another place to fulfill the goals of the Scarlets is either checking out the ruins of Dalaran that Archimonde smashed or go on official capacity to Theramore since that's where much of the Kirin Tor went to with Jaina Proudmoore?

Dalaran's still inhabited, with a giant **** off barrier.

And Theramore is all the way back in Kalimdore...also Jania didn't take much of the Kirin Tor with her.

since the syndicate is a major problem in both, while the ogres are only in one.
true but why should deal with the syndicate with ogres we might be able to get them to do things also their are orkish tribes their, the other loction if I am not wrong is the one with the frostwolves and I feel our char would know that and don't think they will like us or us them
