Halla herself also tried to connect herself to that squire via a promised duel to the death like Reinarr but it didn't pan out because presumably he wasn't Norse.

True, though I think that was less 'forced to duel to the death' and more 'we will meet again'. Still failed, of course.
Random thought inspired by these comments:
Conciously forcing such a fate thing does feel... Skald-y.

Do promised duels to the death also guarantee a Fated Day, or can it end in a Bodily Death?

I don't think anything mortals can do can effect one's Fated Day. High end cultivators, sure, but this doesn't seem a technique restricted to them, so I doubt it can effect that. Which means if you can arrange a Promised Duel to be to True Death, it'll only happen on the preexisting Fated Day of one or both participants.

So you can probably guarantee that, yeah, but it risks putting the duel off quite a bit since you do it by making the duel happen on the day in question, not the day happen when the duel does.

Tolkien did base his dwarves on Jews...
The Norse also did the whole work and rest thing, they just did it on saturday instead of sunday if I recall correctly.

I could also be entirely incorrect on this one, lmao.
Hey Halla,

How often do your children's Fylgjur show up?
Did Aki ever visit your farm, or your father's farm?
What weapon does Abjorn use in spars, since using Steel on your sparring partner doesn't seem right?
Not especially often
Occasionally
The sword he grabbed from his ancestral crypt
Hey Blackhand,

How does the 'Fated Day' thing work? If it was my Fated Day, would even someone like, I don't know, Osborn Burrison or something, be able to kill me?
What's the difference between my Hugareida tricks and Seidr?
'Your fated day results in your final death. The date is set in stone, but the manner and circumstance are up to you.

As for your hugareida and seidr, seidr relies on the power beyond the gate while hugareida relies on internal prowess. Hugareida are also far more confined in scope and scale then seidr tends to be.'

Can you mix hugareida and seidr? Powering your weird fire/time/sword tricks with energy from beyond the gate?

Technically, by powering hugareida with Odr we're already powering them with that energy. Using seidr to power hugareida, however, would be a slightly different route. Perhaps along the lines of a temporary powerup that reduces the energy costs of/empowers the next few Trick uses?

I feel like I should throw on this one cover of STALKER's Fighting Unknown I have whenever you folks encounter a new unknown cultivation system/combat methodology

I wonder what rewards we can get from the Dwarves given that we'll probably get better quality rewards rather quantity given our choices. Aside from ore, gems, and equipment what can we get from the dwarves anyway?

Let's see where this goes then.

The lack of responses to my plan has me more nervous than usual, I admit.

We could get cash if we wanted, I suspect (though we'd rather have forged iron or molten iron). And I, at least, am hoping for better deals on long-term trade with them as part of our reputation increase with them. That actually seems pretty likely given what we know of them...they don't do 'friends' but 'valued business associates' seems within their wheelhouse.

I mean, I've had much of my energy and attention taken up by Final Fantasy 16 the past few days, I hope to return revitalized.

hooo boy, did i missed a lot.....
When his Death comes, do we want to use Loyal Hound Boneash for anything? Perhaps for a weapon that always returns to your side? Or a dog headed arm band for our best friend?
Alright this caught me by suprise, totally forgot about quoting it...
But i feel like using a loyal dog, who is there to guard the house and is part of the family in a weapon is... not quite right?
Not bad, but seems like armor would fit better. if we do battle related item with dog bone ash....
Wolf though? Yeah, i can see that in a weapon. The wolf Fyjgla is the damage doubler, after all.
As you follow the broad-shouldered dwarves, you find yourself noticing their rather odd gait. It's a steady rhythm, but it's an unfamiliar one. Where the average human walk is a smooth, falling-forward motion, dwarves only lift their back foot when their front foot is firmly braced against the ground.
Ah, they test if the floor will collaps under them before placing their entire weight on it, huh?
Makes sense, there is a lot of burrowers down there, and who knows when you walk above a cave or another tunnel....
As the Kindle Spinner whips out across the ground, one of the dwarves reaches into a belt pouch and pulls out a strange, brass club. The dwarf steps forward, into the way of the Kindle Spinner, and freaking hits it with the club!

What is he thinking?! It's just going to expl-

It didn't explode.

Instead of exploding, like it should, the Kindle Spinner simply bounces off the club like a game of knattleikr! Your eyes widen as your own trick comes hurtling back your way!
oh.
OH...
THEY CAN PLAY BALL!
well, this will be interesting.
The dwarves you're facing off against are very difficult to read, likely having realized that you're a berserk and making the necessary changes to counter that. Heck, they might even be using it to create a smokescreen over their actual intentions!
Wait, how did th-
That being said, the baseball bat is a good counter to Kindle-Spinner. I will admit though that it's very strange that they can just "Adapt" around a Berserk and just become perfectly immune to being cold read, that's impressive.
oh.
cold read.
and their whole fucking race is walking scientific calculators.
Damn... makes you think if any Norse has ever made a "Dwarf Mind" trick to mimic berserker cold reading....
Anyways, what is your favorite part of NorseQuest so far?
hm... world building. That and how all the things connect with each other. So many possibilities....
These cultivators aren't just courting death, they're dueling tongues with it in the middle of the street!
Shameless! :V
Are you telling me all the years i have been in secluded cultivation and hunting for things to turn into pills in the course of days was for nothing? No, wait,! Less for nothing, because i also spurred my family and friends and any meaningfull connection in my pursuit to stand at the top? And they have it all while still beating my centuries old mastery in multiple fields???
Mhm, Knightly Armor is horrifically complex with how it works and all the stuff it lets them do.

Like, you once got a peek at the inside of the armor and every inch was covered in itty bitty letters.

To give a small peek behind the curtains; it increases fervor regen, allows for stupid amounts of damage to be taken, enhances attack and defense, provides unique bonuses, and so much more. It's fucked.
I assume the damage tanking is also enchanted by the prayers or whatever is written inside the armor?
But does that me-
Easy-peasy. The hardest part is getting all the metal necessary, figuring out how it all fits together (as all Knightly Armors are different when worn) is way easier in comparison
FINALLY! it has been confirmed!!!
Now, i just want to see the reaction of a knight when Abjorn joins us in the battle from out of nowhere decked out in full plate armor.
Just imagine, this almost 3 meter tall mountain of muscle appears out of nowhere in GOD DAMNED PLATE ARMOR!!!!
(yeah, not gonna happen for a long time, but still)

well, dwarvess are of the "waste not want not" school of thinking due to the deep environments, so we might get less loot than we would expect, especially with our reasoning on coming down here...
But i think its fair to assume we can loot who we kill.
The lack of responses to my plan has me more nervous than usual, I admit.
just caught up.
Didn't really seen it brought up, most likely just missed it, but wouldn't dismissing Mire Ward, closing in, then dropping it again worked as well?

Possibly. They have ranged options, though, so if we want to engage them in melee for any length of time (which I thought we did) we likely need to stay mobile. Or at least, that's what I was thinking. Too late to change it now either way.

Worse if you consider runes and that blood is a very legit paint to use for them.
On the inside, instead of tons of prayer or whatever, have a clever runespell for resisting damage or an analog of crowfeeders runes.
Then add a trick or runespell item that attracts the spilled blood of enemies.

The 3 meter mountain of muscle walks towards you, whatever you throw at that monster, it may damage the armor, but the armor repairs itself while the blood of your slain comrades flows towards it.

nono, IF just confirmed plate is easily doable. the really hard part is all the prayers inside the armor or runing up the plate outside.
but plate by itself? hardest part of it is securing the metal.

Edit: Oh... OH!
You meant their reaction will be worse if we figure out how to rune up the armor!
yeah, sorry there, its getting late...

Doing a bit of research to confirm my memories on the subject, plate armor isn't really any heavier than mail. Often lighter, if anything, so I'm not sure it would require more metal? I mean, mail is already a crapload of metal, but I don't know why plate armor would require more.

It's more being made of solid plates instead of a bunch of rings, and I imagine Norse chain isn't especially heavily linked either.

Right, but 50 lbs of iron is 50 lbs of iron. The plate requires an entirely different skill set to make, but the form does not effect the amount of metal. Looking into it a bit more, the weight I was looking at was for a full suit of mail, not just a mail shirt, so plate is probably a bit more...but we're talking double the weight of metal at most.

Mmm, keep in mind as well too that Cultivator style Plate doesn't need to have limitations for weight as well, so you can have even more weight without causing issues.

The hard part with Plate is that it's complicated as hell and a pain in the arse to put on, but an Armory Pocket solves that problem handily.

Mire Ward falls to the side as you launch into and the dwarves tense in anticipation for another round of combat. Pickaxes rise as the stunted figures prepare to meet your charge.

Wind falls from your limbs as you blur into motion, an aura of fire following each of your movements. You dart across the short stretch of battlefield faster than the mortal mind can process.

But dwarves are not mortal humans.

Even as orthstirr surges down your weapon and sparks fly across its cutting edge, the dwarves are moving to counter.
(Trick Attack: 61+5=66 vs Combat Analysis: 20x3=60, Attacker Wins! 10 Armor Damage!)
Unfortunately for them, you've got the upper hand in speed.

The air snaps and crackles as the smell of burning ozone fills your nostrils. Sagaseeker flashes as its edge crashes against dwarven iron. A bright light snaps out as the explosion rumbles forth, sending the dwarf crashing to the ground as his armor clanks and clunks.

The aura of fire harms those foolish enough to get close, leaving all three of the dwarves worse for wear.

You spin on your heel as the dwarves try to mount a counter-attack only to find their speed lacking. Sagaseeker purrs as you bring it around to bear.
(Trick Attack: 60+5=65 vs Combat Analysis: 23x3=69, Defenders Win! Dwarves Auto-Attack!)
Sagaseeker sails past the head of a ducking dwarf, his small stature making him just a little harder to hit, but its enough for him to dodge. You scowl as a flanking dwarf pulls out a hammer and chisel, a certain sense of dread clambering up your spine.

Time slows as the dwarf moves to attack, his armor taking Heated Shroud's fire without complaint.
(Halla's Hamr: 28+5=33 vs Dwarf Hamr: 31, Halla Wins! 10 Armor Damage!)
The dwarf goes fly as Sagaseeker strikes him upside the helmet. The explosion carries him out of Heated Shroud, but not out of the fight. He's already back on his feet and rushing back in by the time you round on the nearest dwarf.
(Trick Attack: 53+5=58 vs Combat Analysis: 28x3=84, Defenders Win! Dwarves Auto-Attack!)
The dwarf leaps out of the way of the attack, a burst of speed carrying him clear and out from Heated Shroud. The moment your attack misses, chisel dwarf leaps back into the fray.

His armor starts to crack from Heated Shroud's pressure, but he doesn't seem to care as he aims his weapons your way regardless.

Time shuffles on as hammer and chisel race to meet your body.
(Halla's Hamr: 35 vs Dwarf Hamr: 18, Halla Wins! Armor Pierced! 10 Damage!)
The dwarf explodes into a pile of meat-turned charcoal as the Firebomb-Strike meets his helmet.

A bead of sweat trickles down your brow as you breath heavily — not a wheeze, but definitely tired. You've exhausted most of your ability to fight, which the dwarves are quick to notice and even quicker to capitalize on.

The dwarves swap from a defensive-focused posture to an offensive one in the blink of an eye, leaving you no time at all to respond. All you can do is defend.
(Halla's Hamr: 28+5=33 vs Dwarf Hamr: 19x2=38, Dwarves Win!)
Sagaseeker slips from your hands as twin pickaxes race from opposite directions. It clatters against the rock as a pair of Halting Vortexes whirl into existence, stopping the attacks in their tracks.

But that's all the dwarves get to do.

A pickaxe point sprouts from the neck-guard of the bat dwarf, arresting all forms of motion on the spot. Toki wrestles him to the floor as he wrenches his weapon free, taking a length of spine with it.

Another pair of orange-sashed dwarves tackle the last Lurkaling and jam their thick-bladed knives into his eyes, leaving this leg of the battle over.

There's no time for celebrations, though, as the sound of an approaching stampede grows louder and louder in the distance. Looks like Teams Andesite and Gabbro have done their jobs, meaning that it's up to Team Basalt to actually get to work.

Before your eyes, the heavily-armored dwarves of Team Basalt work as one to construct a quartet of squat fortifications. With only a scant few minutes to spare, these are little more than slightly elevated positions. However, that's all they need to be.

Pulling pieces of machinery from their backs, the dwarves set up four of these strange spout-headed, leather bags — one on each tower. It takes two dwarves to operate one machine, which leaves nine dwarves to hold the line.

Nine dwarves and you, that is.

The Lurkaling miners emerge from the tunnels with around forty in number. A good portion of them are injured and Teams Andesite and Gabbro are surely hot on their heels, but that is still forty dwarves.

Nine dwarves and you against forty.

You set your jaw and flick Sagaseeker back into your grip. This is going to get bloody.

(Hugr (Tactics): 6x4, 4x1, 3x4, 2x2, 1x1)10+5(Frenzy)+2(Rounds)=17 Successes

A thick, greasy scent rises from the weapons the dwarves have mounted on the towers. You're not entirely sure what it does, but it should even the odds. All you know is from Toki telling you not to let the 'grease' get on you, as it'll hurt. Unfortunately, you weren't able to get any more information as the battle began in earnest.

The hostile dwarves have formed themselves into a loose wedge. Not a whole lot more complex than that, though the rows are three dwarves deep. It's simple, but that's not a bad thing.

Friendly dwarves are clustered around the trio of towers. There's not quite enough dwarves to set up a solid formation, so they're working in teams of three to defend the towers while, hopefully, whatever the weapons do evens the odds.

You haven't lost any dwarves on your side, thanks to them wearing the dwarven equivalent of mail.

AN: Alright, it's time to see what you're made of.

This part is more surviving until Teams Andesite and Gabbro can crush them from the rear — as has always been the plan — than anything else.

No moratorium. I wouldn't mind doing a second update, but it depends on how the planning goes, I suppose.

Oh boy. Looks like underground chemical warfare, or perhaps napalm, is about to commence. So, I'm guessing we should bombard them with some ranged attacks then get ready to defend?
