It is at the back of the neck. I was just scrambling for a word to use without repeating 'neck' twice in the same sentence, right after another usage.

Just prep another piece of Runework to disarm the bomb if you guys are worried. You'll have the time, and flipping Wolfwind like that mid-battle would be more than worth the time investment towards making it happen

Yeah, this was my initial idea. But ripping out the bomb is looking more and more plausible. I mean... why don't we just do both? Rip out the bomb if the runework doesn't work.

Also, the valleys filled with people descended from big names. Well, it's only really us and Kolla, but it's still pretty surprising.

Huh, is it a spike rather than a collar?

It's an implant. So neither.

Damn. Was hoping that rune-phrase would actually prove useful. :(

I mean, it still could...cutting open his neck to get at it seems like a viable stage one of a quick removal plan...it's just not the only stage.

For runework, bear in mind it might not be a literal bomb. It might release toxins into his blood or something like that. It's a kill switch but not necessarily literally explosive.

"He's alive and is accompanying Horra as he makes his way here. Some manner of magical charge rests in his throat, in the place where the neck meets the spine."
So we have prewarning, giving us valuable information and time.
"magical charge" evokes both ideas of explosives (explosive charge) and energy (electric charge).
If the latter is true, we could just try to have runework that sucks the magical energy from the trap, until either the charge is inert and can be removed later(win), or our runework used up all its paint (fail).

I mean, we too can fly, if not for very long. And malicious compliance on his part might give us the opportunity.

Also, regarding this for a moment - yeah, we can fly, but the fact the Seeress said he's 'mastered' flight makes me believe he can fly for much longer than us, and he's probably just a better flyer than us in general. Although we'd still have a chance of catching him with EWC if we're lucky...

I mean, not like this really matters. He probably wouldn't try and dodge, considering malicious compliance so... ignore me.

Also, I hope Kolla being Ironjaw's daughter doesn't attract salty Jomsvikingar looking to avenge their warband/Steelfather by killing his daughter or something equally stupid.

You know it would be really nice to save his life, but if we could set it off then he wouldn't be a problem for long either way, and it's probably easier to spoof activation than remove.

We owe Wolfwind and he seems like a decent guy. This isn't off the table if he's about to kill our dad or something, but it's definitely a last resort for several reasons.

It probably does something worse than just kill him or he might tank body-death and hope someone raises him rather than follow Horra's orders.

Depends on context, but I suspect it doesn't just kill him, no. Maybe it dumps, like, 9 Frenzy into his system and drives him insane first or something like that. That would be...bad. For everyone.

Winter 7/Pre-Trial 1.2 Part 2
[X] Plan Prepping For The Future
-[X] Speak further to the Seeress, both regarding the trial, but particularly about Wolfwind, both how to free him if he's been magically compelled and to see if she can find him.
-[X] Go shopping. Specifically, we're looking for any available magical plants and to buy an arm-ring or some other jewelry appropriate for putting Runes on. We have silver, so the iron shortage shouldn't stop the latter.
-[X] Try and see if there's any more networking to be done. Three judges on-side is great, more would be better.
-[X] Try and find anyone in town whose testimony can support ours. The skald who told the story about Horra, or the guy who sold the elephant to him, or whoever else.
-[X] Try and see if we can find anyone who has kids around the same age as ours so we can hopefully help them achieve a proper peer group.
[X] Buy 2 slates (10 oz. silver)

Unfortunately, it seems that the ships bringing jewelry got hit by raiders, so the little that did make it through has had their prices jacked up.

Damn merchants. Damn pirates.

Well, at least it wasn't all lost.

Just more expensive.

For a basic piece of jewelry, it'll cost 12oz silver.
For something fancier, it'll cost 18oz.
And for the fanciest, it'll cost 24oz.

Would you like to purchase any?

Unfortunately, you weren't able to find any magical plants on sale. A shame.

Networking (Hugr (Silver-Tongue): 4x2, 3x2, 2x2, 1x6)4+1=3 Failures, wtf
Unfortunately, all you were able to glean from the little networking you were able to accomplish was that at least one of the judges is susceptible to bribery. After all, it is only right and proper to accept payment for services rendered.

"The elephant?" The merchant's eye twitches as you give the reason for tracking him down. "What about it?"

"I was wondering who you sold it to. Do you recall?" The violent twitching ratchets up a notch.

"Sold?" He almost spits the word. "It ran away! Who told you I sold it, I'll have their liar's tongue for supper!"

You hold your hands up as you slowly back off. "Sorry, that was my assumption!"

He settles down from the rabid bristle to a mild, dark-eyed grumble. "Fine, fine. Just don't go spreading that around..."

'Ran away, huh? Why is it that I find myself rather doubtful of that particular fact?'

You make to answer, only for the squinting gaze of the merchant to stop you in your tracks.

Yeah... It's probably best not to talk to Blackhand in front of people.

Scouting out potential friends for your children (Hugr (Silver-Tongue): 6x8, 5x4)24x2(Max Success)+1=49 Successes, wtf
After quite a bit of talking to people, particularly couples both new and old, you've come up with a list of potential friends to set up playdates with for your children.

There are more boys than there are girls, at the moment, but that's likely to change in the future. None of the children are from families in the Valley, they're all either from the Hading side of the fjord or the coastline.

Boys
Henrik - Age 2, Bold, Rude, Rowdy (Great Potential)
Hrimnir - Age 1, Bossy, Quiet, Sharp (Good Potential)

Horra arrives later that day and sets up camp. From what you can tell, his opening strategy is going to consist of flaunting his wealth. He's got some things in his back pocket as well, that much is clear as day.

Currently, two of the judges are swayed your way. The other seven are undecided.

What will your opening strategy be?

[ ] Open up with a display of how trustworthy you are
[ ] Open up with a display of how untrustworthy Horra is

AN: Welcome to NorseQuest: Courtroom Drama Edition.

The mechanics of this are pretty simple. You make repeated silver-tongue contests against Horra while bringing in witnesses, involving bribes, making threats, employing violence, and/or all manner of tricks and tools.

You have from sun up to sun down to win the case.

In order to win, you have to sway a super-majority of the judges to your side. At least seven judges must be on your side in order to claim victory. If the sun sets before the case is concluded, it is thrown out regardless of the facts of the matter.

Good luck.

25-minute moratorium.

What the fuck on that playdate roll.

Anyway.

A pure write-in for this is, uh, it's going to make things a headache, I think.

Has the Trial even begun yet?

Ah, that's better.

A plan then.

I'm thinking what we want to do is get the public eye on the bandit problems we've all been having, how much of a pain they are with everyone--but that we've been doing our part to keep the peace--while, we even managed to take down one of the bandit camps not too long ago!

It's just a shame that we're in such a time of troubles, where everyone's pulling together to help each other out.

Basically, we make Horra's insane wealth look suspicious--or at least really gauche by pointing out how everyone else is having trouble, and yet he's magically coming out smelling like roses. This is set-up for the Trial Proper of course.

We can't beat him in a straight up Money Contest, because he's getting insane amounts of dosh from the Lurkalings and the Bandits, he's expecting an attack on his character, and while we're trustworthy, we're also running the problem of not being a man.

Instead, hammer Deeds, and Actions. We did take out that bandit crew, we even have a pretty damn solid poem that we made on the whole thing! We've even got two survivors who agreed to surrender and join our own household who can back our testimony.

Trial starts tomorrow morning (in quest). You're planning on how you want to play the opening statement of cases before you go to bed, as it were.
Hmm. My thinking is that we may want to start on an emphasizing trustworthy. Because we need to persuade them to go looking in the sanctum where all the killer evidence is. And Horra already isn't regarded as the most trustworthy of people, it's just that he's relying on his relations with half the valley and no direct evidence to avoid trouble.

Although this might be a way of making it work.
