But Christianity taking over the Norse is the neutral ending, right? So is the debt stuff wrong, not applicable here, or there's an even worser fate than the Enemy winning?
Well this is Norse Quest, not Missionary Quest. Though Halla may on an individual level be saved if she came to see Christ as her personal Lord and Savior, that's not really the point of this quest as a game.

Its victory by refusing to play by ceding the victory to a higher power, rather than player agency

Well, not worse than the Enemy winning, as they're the Neutral End (the Enemy winning is Bad End territory, obviously), but worse than the Norse defeating it themselves and remaining a distinct culture and religion separate from Christianity.

If nothing else, as has been noted, Norse Cultivation is extremely egalitarian, which is frankly a lot better than the Christian version we saw in several ways. If we can get it to prolong lifespan as well (at higher levels), which seems almost certain to be in the cards (it will never make you immortal in the strictest sense, all men die, but unaging and with no set death date seems possible given the Gods), I think it's better in almost every way, in terms of, like, the quality of life for people who follow it.

The changes needed to make that work are almost universally positive changes to Norse culture as well, which is also helpful in making it a better option (converting to Christianity will not let us change or ameliorate the bad aspects of that culture in the way that being the founder of modern Saga Cultivation will let us change or ameliorate those of Norse Culture).

It doesn't even need to prolong lifespan, the simple fact of the matter is that Norse stuff can benefit everyone, and applies to anything they set out to do, it's just that Warfare is unreasonably disproportionately rewarded compared to all the other crazy shit they do.

Converting to Christianity rends all of Blackhands efforts meaningless, because from the Christian perspective it kinda is. Why persist in the flawed mortal world when you can spend eternity in literal Heaven?

Cultivation and things like that are the result of pride in the material world. It's why Halla was able to Kwab that Priest so easily, imo.

I bring up the lifespan thing because you can argue it as a benefit of the Christian system otherwise. It's arguably better even without that, but it's inarguably better if it can duplicate it, at least IMO.

This kind of talk makes no sense to me.

You still benefit from Christianity even without cultivation. You just need faith to benefit from it. The Norse culture only recognizes value in accomplishment.

To say that the one is more egalitarian is false on its head. It's more convenient. Sure. But only if you prioritize that sense of pride and overwhelming agency in an ultimately transitory existence.

Not really. The Christian system of cultivation is based on the feudal system and only a few people receive the benefits of cultivation, which include a high degree of personal autonomy and ability to achieve what you set out to. In the Norse system, at least once it's fixed, everyone can have that.

I don't think a system that encourages immortal overlords who rule over peasants who will never have a chance at a drop of that power simply because of their birth is a good thing.

Now, Christianity the religion is another matter entirely...but we're talking Cultivation systems here, only incidentally about religion, and both Norse Paganism and Christianity aren't as simple as you're painting them (just for example, these people are all Catholic, they don't believe in salvation by faith alone).

...Christ was a Jew, not a Catholic. Catholic doctrine is secondary to the Word. Even if the Pope would try to have you believe otherwise. It is that simple, shockingly enough.

Edit: Anyway, that's not the point here. I was providing context for why the contest is kind of sidestepped by converting to Christianity.

I'm not going to get into a religious argument here on this subject. My main point was that we were talking cultivation systems when discussing advantages, not religions per se.

Ironjaw is a dude who apparently reached Steelfather Tier just based on being That Fucking Swole that nobody protested the title, even though he wasn't Actually Fucking Invincible like Steelfathers are supposed to be.

Yeah, Ironjaw has managed to get a position as a Steelfather despite not actually becoming spiritually bound to Steel (hence the name, I suppose), and that makes him, like, probably the most hardcore guy in Norse lands who isn't cheating. Maybe even an Odr cultivator if Blackhand talked to him about it.

I definitely want to meet and talk to that guy.

It would make sense if Ironjaw was a badass Ironbrother, talked to Hallr on his quest, and then managed to become a steelfather level badass via cultivation.
Noteworthy: He has tried to kill Hallr, maybe a deal with the enemy that leads to him being tolerated as long as he:
  1. doesn't oppose the enemy
  2. doesn't spread the knowledge
  3. doesn't try to grow beyond the control of the enemy
'I only ever encountered, until the time of my death, a total of seven Steelfathers. Of those seven, Careful-Strider was the only one who never tried to kill me.

There are a small cadre of Steelfathers that have earned my begrudging respect. Ironjaw for his refusal of Steel, the Matron because she made it at all, and Careful-Strider because he watches where his feet fall.'

It's interesting that Steelfathers appear to have no name, just a kenning. I suspect the Sacrifice needed to obtain that power is involved there, some giving up of that-which-is-you. Certainly, since kennings already constrain behavior, I would expect their behavior to be even more constrained.

Hang on. What are the tiers of power here? Having trouble pinning down the names.

Slagsons are the term for relatively low level people (and may be being renamed in a very minor retcon as the QM is unsatisfied with it). Ironbrothers are serious people (the bandit leader in the cave was Ironbrother level). Steelfathers are currently the peak of Norse power level and are...something else. They (with the sole exception of Ironjaw) seem to make some sort of spiritual pact with the essence of Steel (which is very bad news) in order for their bodies to actually become as tough as Steel (which verges on indestructible in this world).

It took nine Steelfathers taking him by surprise to kill Hallr Blackhand. He claims he could've taken them if he was ready for them and I believe him.

Hm. And if there's any place where what we know about this is localized, can you direct me there? I've read a bunch of the Information posts and I think I'm missing something.

It was revealed in-story and details discussed various places.

Small note here; kennings aren't 'additional names', or rather, they're not just that. They also serve as replacement names to differentiate you from whoever you may have been named after, for example.
Slagson -> Ironbrother -> Steelfather
Slagson is named as such because you 'bring the iron from the slag' (note; that's not how it works in actual forging, but whatever). I am thinking of changing the name to Smeltson, though not super happy with that name either.

Could do 'Coalson', I suppose. 'Stoneson' as you draw the iron from the stone?

I'll make a Warbands post which includes that.

I wonder if Steelfatherification involves actually physically incoporating Steel in one's body or soul, in Pockets or Fasts.

We should, uh, avoid doing that, though that goes without saying. I doubt we'll be touching Steel until we have a much better idea of how the curse operates.

Almost certainly not Pockets, as those are part of Odr-based cultivation and the Steelfathers wouldn't have access. Fasts would be possible, though.

The Norse in real life wouldn't have been using coal for ironworking. They didn't know how to coke it and wood was readily available for processing into charcoal, the worldwide most popular fuel for the purpose.

Collections: Iron, How Did They Make It? Part II, Trees for Blooms

This week we continue our four-part (I, II, III, IVa, IVb, addendum) look at pre-modern iron and steel production. Last week we prospected our iron ore and extracted it from the ground and did some…

Stoneson would be my choice, for what it's worth. There are other options but none of them SOUND as good.

Also, 'Stoneson' doesn't sound contemptuous the way a lot of the alternatives do, which is probably good, because in a relatively egalitarian culture the fact that you're merely average shouldn't mean that you're referred to by a disrespectful category name.

If I had to guess, I imagine it's either something from True Norse Cultivation that's been twisted into some facsimile, sort of like how Shapecrafters can unlock someone's Frenzy, or it's something entirely foreign to True Cultivation.
