You know how you can fix this, Halla? Teach people that incredible Calling for Congress spell. If your dad had that spell he'd have been contacting you every day
Hallbjorn is adorable. Halla, you should teach your children Campfire!

Actually we should teach Drifa Campfire too

We were given the option for literal years to spend XP to teach Drifa directly, as well as told that we can teach people as actions to help them learn faster.

We still haven't done either ever. Gotta vote for that stuff to happen if you want us to do these things.

Attacking him this turn is going in blind against what's probably a superior foe (since two of our heaviest hitters are away to Wessex, and he will have his whole kill squad with him), and probably doesn't even actually get him before he heads back to Jurgdby given the timing.

If we can't reach him before he goes home, sure, that's a bad idea. But I doubt this guy is traveling with every single one of his men and allies. Waiting 3 months for everyone to get back might mean we attack him and the numbers are even more in his favor, since it'll be his territory surrounded by his allies. The logic for a quick ambush of our men attacking him and his men is that he doesn't have a home field advantage if he's traveling - he has his current allies, and that's all. No reinforcements.

There's also the dramatic side of things. Norse cultivation and the world around them warps to fit narratives and understanding other people's narratives and how to manipulate them has been mentioned by IF on Discord as very important in high level combat. Trying to short circuit what is clearly a slightly longer narrative immediately does not seem likely to end well, and even leaving that aside, trying to kill this guy before we understand his narrative reasons for approaching us is potentially a fatal mistake if his narrative interacts with ours in a way that effects us badly.

I think you're misjudging the Narrative 'mechanic' as is - though neither of us have seen it so it's hard to really get. Narratives, as IF has talked about, are about the Why for the fight, not about allowing extended time to build up to the fight. A short satisfying narrative close is just as acceptable as a long drawn out one, as long as we have what the Gods think is a good reasoning for what we do, strong, sound, honorable, etc. And I think 'A jarl avenges her people and aids her karls' is a fine enough narrative justification.

I'm gonna admit, part of my arguing this is that... I don't think this guy is on Halla's level. I dunno, maybe I'm overestimating us, but Halla is extremely strong, with a bunch of strong benefits and things she's great at. If this guy out of nowhere can match her, I'd be surprised.

His men might be better quality than ours point for point, but... if we can beat him and move on, or pull some bullshit TSS and finish off multiple of his men or something, it's a winnable battle.

Sometimes waiting and researching and building power and making sure you are good and ready for stuff is good. But sometimes excessive caution is a poison, and makes things worse, not better.

We actually did invest some xp into Drifa (and made sure she knew Campfire among other things) and have been told that our kids are too young to tutor properly. We could teach other people though, it's true.

I mean, if we're waiting, we're not gonna go to his house and attack him in front of all his friends. Part of the point of waiting is to find a good opportunity where he has as few friends around as possible. He also wants something from us, so I highly doubt this is the only time he's gonna come and see us. Lying in wait is very plausibly an option

To some degree that may be true, but even then, understanding his reasons gives us a much better chance of being able to poke holes in them, which is a big and important part of the narrative thing, from what IF just outlined of it.

Jogrim is a Grade 3 Berserk. We have only met one Grade 3 Berserk who was not on Halla's level (the other five were her current level or above), and even he was damn close (at Top). Assuming this guy is notably weaker than we are is a very large assumption with strong evidence disputing it. Even 2nd Grade Berserks (which he also has one of) are all Top or above, so he's likely at Upper Top or higher personally, and has at least one guy at Top as well, maybe more (since Berserk sets more of a minimum than a maximum).

And this guy probably didn't come out of nowhere. I dunno why he's here but he has an agenda, and that means he's related to something going on. What is unclear, but he has some relevance beyond being some random dude.

Which is not to say the battle is unwinnable, I don't think that at all. But I think it's a bad battle to go into when we know none of our enemy's capabilities and they know all of ours (this guy knows Halla's favorite food...he knows how she fights).

Sometimes waiting and researching and building power and making sure you are good and ready for stuff is good. But sometimes excessive caution is a poison, and makes things worse, not better.

I don't think that applies to facing peer level opponents with forces on par with our own. That's exactly the kind of people we need to know more about if possible.

This is correct. The Sagas don't give any specific amount of time between incitement and action, using vague terms like 'some time' and 'a long time' or 'a short while' to describe how long it takes for action to happen. 'Some time' is the most common descriptor, which I have taken to mean around a small handful of months.

0~0~0

Not to put my finger on the scale or anything, but the longer you wait to do something such as this, the longer your foes have to catch word, react, and prepare for you.

Jogrim Foestep is strong, but not stronger than Halla. If he were fighting Halla in a one-on-one, you take it—though it won't be easy. If he's got one of his pals fighting you as well, then things get a bit iffy.

Here are the pros and cons of waiting vs going, as I see it.
Waiting;
+Learn details
+Spying on movements
+Prep time
-Your enemies can, and will, be doing the same thing to you
-Jogrim will return to his farm in Jurgdby if you take too long, where he has many more men and can call his allies for aid
-You cede the initiative, allowing Jogrim to, should he so choose, attack when you're not ready yet

Going;
+Advantage of Surprise
+You are taking the initiative, which is inherently advantagous
+He is lacking the majority of his men as well as any proper armor they may have
+/-Jogrim won't know the details about you and your men, though you won't either
-You'll be attacking Griss Strongthrow's farm, which, depending on how things play out, nearly guarantees he and his mens' involvement in the fight. However, this can be mitigated by attacking Jogrim when he is not at Griss' farm.

+/-Jogrim won't know the details about you and your men, though you won't either

This seems like a big assumption when Jogrim knows our favorite food, but the rest is fair enough.

Hmmm. @Imperial Fister could we try and gather info on him and then attack as part of the same action (assuming it's a Focus Action)? Or burn Work on getting some info if that's an option?

I'm not so much against doing this soon as against doing it blind, though the missing people off to Wessex are certainly an issue.

...Because he asked Magni what your favorite food was, because Magni had told him that you had cool horses and him, being a horse farmer, has an interest in checking out 'cool horses' in case those horses are better than his. In such a situation, it's important to be on good terms with the owners so they are more amenable to selling either the horses or stud rights, or at least convinced to not try competing with him. Bringing the owner's favorite food as greeting is a very good way to get into their good graces

You can, yes.

Fair enough. Maybe I'm overly suspicious due to the weird vibe I got from the guy. Or just getting paranoid.

That does make the attack plan look a fair bit better, if he's as in the dark as we are. The attack plan would look about like this (it needs to be a Focus thing and the conversation with Halfdan, while important, is not super urgent):

[X] Plan Well, Let's Kill Him

-[X] [Focus] Find, Ambush (in the Norse sense), and Kill Jogrim Foestep
--[X] Bring all available retainers, and any of our adult family members who want to come
--[X] See if we can ferret out any information first so we're better prepared
--[X] Make sure he's away from Griss Strongthrow's farm when we do this

-[X] Use Calling For Congress or other Fylgja use to get on the same page as Corpsemaker in terms of timing for taking care of Dorri
--[X] Take all available precautions to ensure privacy

-[X] (Crafting) Try to make something (1)
--[X] Reforge Ashen Kiss (+16 successes from Tools/Workshop)
--[X] Being careful to leave the intent of the current runes unaffected, and adding Crowfeeder's Runes
--[X] Adding wolf bone ash
--[X] Use Experience Forging to infuse it with our Lesson Of Fire Muna
--[X] Adding 1 Odr to the crafting and add the Aspects to the runecraft roll
--[X] Attempt to use Frenzy on crafting rolls, attempting to achieve a state of focus via hashish if we can't manage it otherwise. Have a spotter to make sure we eat and drink while doing this.
--[X] Quench the blade in a potion made to enhance its heat involving hearthroot oil, 1 Odr, and various things associated with flame and heat.
-[X] (Crafting) Try to make something (2)
--[X] Silver And Gold Torc for Abjorn (+16 successes from Tools/Workshop)
--[X] Use bear bone ash
--[X] Add runes saying "Let no trick serve to escape my wearer's grasp."- Hopefully magically prevents magical effects that would free people from his grapples
--[X] Use Experience Forging to infuse it with our First Kiss Under A Falling Tree Muna

-[X] Special Note: On all Crafting add the following if possible unless otherwise specified:
--[X] Using Sundersight (+1d3 Successes)
--[X] Burning Frami, Virthing, and Saemd (for +1 Success each, +3 successes total) to enhance the crafting process

Training:

-[X] (Training) Hamr (511 xp to rank up)
--[X] Train Combat Skill 6xp (3xp)

-[X] (Training) Hugr (255 xp to rank up)
--[X] Train Time Stands Still 72xp (36xp)
--[X] Train Inertia-Arresting-Throw 36 xp (18xp)
--[X] Train Standstill 36xp (18xp)

-[X] (Work Options)
--[X] Make 10 Restful Clay Cups and 2 Alarm Charms (4 Work)
--[X] Write A Poem – Niflheim, spending 7 Odr (3 Work)
---[X] If we manage to make Frenzy work on our crafting, use the same methods on the poetry
--[X] Make 9 Superior Shields w/Bog Iron Rims for Retainers (9 Work)
--[X] Find out what gossip has to say on Magni Little-Rock (1 Work)
--[X] Get information on Jogrim Foe-Step and his people (1 Work)

-[X] (Incidentals)
--[X] Infuse 16 Odr into Wordplay
--[X] Adding Taafl Board Capacity Gains to: Halla,
--[X] Receiving Metal from Dwarves: 24 oz Forged Iron, 6 oz Dusty Iron,

I'm a bit ambivalent on whether to actually do this, so I'm also still voting for the other plan.

[X] Plan Some Important Conversations

EDIT: Adding preliminary Roof Fixing Vote:

[X] Examine the man's roof and see what the problem is. If the roof is simply poorly built we'll rebuild it for him for an appropriate price. If it's something magical we'll chase or bribe away any spirits outside the household, propitiate any household spirits (or help him do so), break any curse, and so on. If it's a prank by someone at the house we'll figure out who and why. If it's something else, we'll figure out another solution...maybe magical waterproofing?

As I've been arguing for it, I definitely have to back it. Take a potential enemy off the board now, not later.

This probably makes us enemies rather than gets rid of them. It's necessary to maintain Kare's loyalty and arguably for moral reasons, but I don't think this is a net loss of enemies. It's gonna be expensive as well, though the loot from Jogrim's people will hopefully make us at least break even. Ugh. So much weregild.

Which doesn't mean we shouldn't do it, mind you, I actually think that it's a necessity at some point, but let's keep in mind the very real down sides.

FEUD TIME LET''S GO!!

Being a proper Norse chief and murdering a man and his friends over a grudge held by one of our retainers. That's some good quality Saga action right there, and no mistake.

Only comments would be:
- I would like it if we could talk to Halfdan rather than the crafting this turn, but I accept that probably isn't happening.
- We stopped practicing Stepping Sword, but I think we'd made something of a breakthrough on that? Might be good to get back at it at some point.
- When we have our timetable RE: Dorri worked out with Corpsemaker, we also need to fill in Skane + our other allies. Can be for next turn, but a general reminder. Also we haven't actually told Skane that it's Dorri yet... might be better done in person?
- Once again, I would like to do the flying really high experiment, but it's not urgent.

I think that needs to be a Focus action, and we only have one a turn and if we're to kill Jogrim, we need it for that (I'm pretty sure big combats are always gonna need to be a Focus action).

IF clarified we can't spend xp on it, only actions. We probably spend one next turn.

Traveling is still limited so probably not in person, but we can definitely call them in once we have a timetable, yeah.

Fair. Maybe next turn or the turn after...

So, on the roof situation, here's a placeholder vote idea if we don't get more info:

[ ] Examine the man's roof and see what the problem is. If the roof is simply poorly built we'll rebuild it for him for an appropriate price. I'd rather have something less conditional, but if we don't get more info, I'm voting for this.

The boy with the clammy hands smiles, big and wide, and promises to hunt a strong, virile buck as payment for the services rendered. A few days later, a fourteen-pronged deer arrives on your doorstep, fieldstripped and ready for use.

A week or two after that, a man comes by with a complaint of his own. After inviting him inside and having some food prepared for him, he reveals that his roof keeps leaking! No matter what he does, it just keeps leaking. He's tarred it, he's stacked hay, he's even entirely replaced the wood of his roof, but nothing seems to help!

He wants you to offer a solution.

What solution do you offer?
[ ] Write in a solution
Hi, Man with Leaking Roof, to help diagnose your problem, I have a few questions:

1) When did your roof-leaking problems start? (Helps to identify if it is a curse)
2) Has there been strange oddities other than a leaking roof? (Helps to identify if it is a curse)
3) Where is your home with leaking rood issues at? (Helps to identify if problem is location-based: Somewhere wet or cursed might have greater propensity for leaking roof)

All of this makes sense! Honestly making substantive Research take a proper action slot makes sense given the amount of stuff we used to jam in there.

For Skane, it might be able to wait until we can travel again, depending on when that is exactly.

It sounds a lot like there's some kind of spirit of the house/roof who's annoyed with him, given there's no natural explanation for it.

I would suggest leaving out an offering for the spirits of the house to placate them, and generally being more forthcoming with leaving a bowl of milk out in the future.

Yeah, more substantive research being an action is totally fair. For Skane, I think we want to deal with Dorri before we travel, which necessitates calling the Skane relatives rather than visiting.

Why do we need to reforge Ashen Kiss?

If we are reforging for more benefits, we should apply Seidr to it. In this case, IF has already mentioned quenching a forged item in a potion brewed with Seidr. We could do that: Make a potion/brew using hearthberry juice and probably a bunch of Salamanders and ash, something like that, and use that to quench Ashen Kiss.

I think having a backup weapon is good and, realistically, Ashen Kiss is currently not a very good one at all. Quenching it with something magical is possible, though.

I think we should also add in 'check if the Nisse is pissed off'. Nisse retribution can be extremely varied - Consistent leaking at the same point is within that variance.

Realistically I don't think it can be a simple construction defect if he's repaired the roof multiple times. A curse might be possible but... it you're cursing someone, you'd probably curse the person and not their roof?

I'd bet on at least five to one odds that it's an annoyed household spirit, because that feels exactly like what they would do.

Fair. Adjusted wording to take nisse and other household spirits into account.

If it's a design issue, like the roof being slanted wrong, rather than a material one, it's very possible he built the new roof with the same design. Now, I suspect it is in fact magical, but we should at least check for the alternative.

It's certainly possible, but it sounds like he basically rebuilt the roof from scratch, and I think he would probably be mindful of a slant or dip that might cause water to pool when he was doing that. Unlike a modern roof where it might last many years before needing a repair, and generally only specialised craftspeople can repoint it from scratch or replace the rafters, roof repair is likely going to be a yearly chore for most Norse farmers. So I'd imagine he's broadly experienced enough to be able to rule out a design flaw like that on his own.

All that being said, there's no harm doing our due diligence.

--[X] Start by talking about what happened with the Hading Witch (we don't intend to spread the story, but we do need to know if possible), and any oaths Halfdan may have with Dorri. Assuming he's not sworn to side with Dorri in fights or something, try and get him on-side for our looming conflict with Dorri...we would mention Dorri was involved in setting up the Revenge Raid if he needs convincing, as well as the Drysalt thing.
--[X] Ensure absolute privacy, including from things like ants, using various privacy wards, Eyespeech to impart more sensitive information, and Owl-Eye Pulse and similar abilities to check for eavesdroppers.
