Can we buy egg iron, or secrets? Or dwarven products like Sunstone? We don't really need more metal do we?

We 100% do need significantly more metal. We currently have 652 oz of Forged Iron...meaning we'll have less than 100 oz. after even one set of Nordic Plate. We also are basically out of Magic Iron and need to make four more swords for our retainers. Which is to say, we need and will likely use basically all that we're buying in my above plan in the near-ish future (okay, not all of the magic iron...more like 3/4).

It does seem reasonable to me

Sweet. That definitely seems the way to go, then.

One option might be to ask those we commission for to provide the forged iron, honestly.

We almost certainly would require that, yes. Though I'm dubious we're gonna be selling many suits of Nordic Armor any time soon.

Also, when this Dorri business is finished, we should find some local families and offer to take on their kids as apprentices. It's not a Norse tradition, but it's a useful way of spreading knowledge and cultivating alliances at the same time. I'd like us to have a grand workshop with an attached library - we can be like Aristotle's school, but for the children of Norse royalty rather than Alexander and friends. That's a profound way to break stasis and piss in the Enemy's cornflakes. A new generation of Norse leaders who are literate in multiple languages, new learning, and new perspectives? That's the biggest change to the status quo we could make.

I'm definitely down with starting a school, yeah. We've discussed that previously and it seems like a really good idea in general...we'll see how viable it winds up being in practice.

I'll call the vote in an hour. It's probably not going to be an especially long update, given that it's just the dwarves and then gacha before voting for next turn. Sorry about that, but it's just how it worked out.

Alright, voting is now closed
Scheduled vote count started by Imperial Fister on Jan 7, 2024 at 2:15 PM, finished with 40 posts and 3 votes.

  • [X] Plan Replenishing Stocks
-[X] Purchase 600 oz. Forged Iron (-51 Food)
-[X] Purchase 10 oz Forged Iron and 1 oz Molten Iron for 1 Food (-1 Food)
-[X] Purchase 24 oz each of Dusty Iron, Molten Iron, Drafty Iron, and Storm Iron (-16 Food)
    -[X] Purchase 7 Socket Stones (-7 Food)
-[X] If our social Tricks indicate it wouldn't be a terrible problem, broach the idea of them paying us for the delay in returning the ledger to the tune of doubling our usual gains from our existing deal (so +24 oz Forged Iron and +6 Magical Iron per turn, while we continue to provide only 3 Food) until the translated ledger is returned to us...with back pay based on when they said they'd have it to us, this would also net us 48 oz Forged Iron and 12 oz Icy Iron immediately, which we'll forego if we need to do so to avoid problems or look more reasonable.

With almost all the demands and offers laid bare on the table, there's just one more thing to do. Lacing your fingers together on the table, you deliver Toki your best authoritative stare as you speak your final demands, "Given the delay in returning me my ledger," Toki slowly nods as you speak, eyes narrowing all the while, "I feel it fair for, until the ledger is returned, the quantity of iron you send my way to be doubled. Do you feel the same?"

Toki nods, a big smile suddenly sprouting from underneath the suspicion, "Only double? Why, of course that feels fair to me!"

As you shake hands, you can't help but feel like you may have been scammed. Or, perhaps, you could have asked for significantly more...

Regardless, the deal is done and the only thing left to do is collect your iron.

AN: Blegh, I'm sorry for how long this took me to get out, given that it's so small. I just didn't have much desire to write more dwarf diplomatic things.

Still, the turn is done and there shall be no moratorium. I'll call the vote sometime tomorrow.

Oh... boy. If all they have to do is pay us double iron... they can just pay that indefinitely and keep it for themselves forever.

Okay, so, tentative plan. Basic idea is going to Folkvangr and finish off weapons for our remaining huscarl along, via Work Dice, with whipping up some Yule presents for just about everyone. Research could be adjusted, but with our Rewrites refreshing before next turn, now is the time to get experimental with them (and we are...I'm not sure if either of the Rewrite actions will actually work).

We're going down to only one Mail Shirt for Dorri here (though the quality goes up)...we're not seeing ay returns on that deal yet, so it's more suspicious if we keep producing at the same rate than if we slow down.

-[X] [Travel] Go To Folkvangr
--[X] Taking with us Hasvir Horrasson and possibly a couple of others (probably just Stigmar, and Abjorn if he wants, though other family members who know the Drysalt situation are possible)...we're not telling anyone who doesn't already know about the Drysalt thing or our destination other than Hasvir.

EDIT: Switched from Size Up to training Sword Stepping. Added some wording clarifications on some of the research.

Oh... boy. If all they have to do is pay us double iron... they can just pay that indefinitely and keep it for themselves forever.

Dwarves are very profit-oriented, this is them taking a loss every turn, they absolutely want to stop that as quickly as possible. They were just expecting us to be harsher about it.

Didn't IF say that we can do the research on our Revalation and then throw xp at Sword-Stepping on the same turn? Or is Size Up just more important

It's my hope we can make a Training Item for Sword Stepping next turn...it's worth a slight delay in grabbing stuff for it to get it all at half price, if that can be arranged. If that's not valid we could swap some stuff around.

@Imperial Fister is that plan possible? if not we could shuffle some stuff around slightly.

Maybe it's because I associate the song with this thread, but I'm almost disappointed you didn't name the plan "Folkvangr calling me".

Right, yeah, that's what I was thinking of, thanks.

I went with the Immigrant Song reference instead as it was just more at the forefront of my brain at the time.

[X] Plan Folkvangr We Are Coming

This broadly looks good to me.

In terms of the research, I have a couple ideas:
- If you're willing to swap out the Puncture/Sharpen Alloy project, then I'd throw a reward dice towards trying the same thing with Stoking Engage/Kindle Spinner. Alloying Sharpen and Puncture would be nice, but it's basically an (admittedly considerable) Orthstirr saving, whereas I think a Stoking Engage/Kindle Spinner hybrid would be great for attacking large groups or generating a bunch of Stoked Dice at the start of a fight whilst being harder to interrupt.
- I would kinda like to try testing how high Halla can fly. If Ember-Winged Cloak does not need reaction mass, could she get into orbit? Presumably air would be a concern, but with her constitution and the practice holding her breath we've done for TSS, not to mention using Gale or some sort of magic item, the idea is worth considering. If we can get into orbit, then there's a couple of cool ideas which open up. (Okay, mostly I just think it would be cool.) Obviously we wouldn't try for low earth orbit in our first flight, but it would be cool to see how high we get before Halla starts to pass out.

I would be opposed to swapping out the Puncture/Sharpen project. If it works it's really good for our basic attack spam.

I don't think we need the extra Stoked Dice very often, honestly. It's worth checking, but not over the Puncture/Sharpen thing. We do have a third Rewrite and IF has sometimes let us throw in an extra Research beyond the normal six if it's via Reward Die so you could ask if that's an option, maybe?

This is interesting, but what's the actual practical use of going that high? It seems like a risky thing to attempt for little practical benefit right at the moment absent some application I'm not thinking of.

It might get us a muna? Assuming we don't pass out from lack of oxygen and die from the fall although if we made a trick with gale to continuously supply us with breathable air we might be able to go pretty high. However emberwing cloak will burn up a lot of the oxygen that we need.

@Imperial Fister is that plan possible? if not we could shuffle some stuff around slightly.
I'm going to have to say that you can't make a training item for something on the very turn you first train it.

Speaking of musical references, there's a fair few in NQ that I reckon not many have noticed.
Does our accidental generosity at least give use more goodwill?
It does not, no.
