I'm morally opposed to slavery. Additionally, taking cultivators as slaves is always pretty dubious as a plan, especially given the Story-Based nature of Norse cultivation...them escaping and coming back to bite us is too good a story for me to feel sanguine about it. Sure, Thanes own cultivation isn't story-based, but when ours is...

And the difference in price for the men our kinsman has isn't worth pissing him off. It's just...not actually all that much money.

Even discounting morality I'm not sure that its a very good idea to thrall these people
we don't need our own Gabriel to our Steinarr

I know the situations are different, but I feel like after what happened with Gabriel Halla would be a bit leery of taking Thralls. That and I'm hoping we can get more stuff from Alfie.

I am whatever on the thanes, whether we thrall them or bring them back to Alfred like a cat, to be executed later.... i am fine with either.

But Deadman did make a good point, no point making our kinsman angrier than he is....

Everyone who is voting for thralls,
I would like to ask you to please reconsider because even discounting morals I don't think it's wise to sell a bunch of warriors into slavery who won't be fully constrained and will have a very long life to seek vengeance against us or our descendants.

we really don't need our version of Gabriel swearing vengeance

Thanes' power comes from their lands though....

Which thralls have none of.
And i am sure we can fashion magic manacles for them easily.

Yeah, I think this is the best we can do right now, get our payday, get to know our Kinsman, and trust the other matters to work themselves out.
Weren't we opposed to taking florida interns and prefered hiring people?

Nice! Seems like the battle plan worked pretty much how we hoped!

It's then that the tower's door opens and you crack a grin as Heima Smiles looms. He throws something from the doorway. It bounces once, twice, before rolling to a stop at your feet.

"Caught him putting on armor," Heima announces without much fanfare as you heft the decapitated head of Tobias Belanger by his hair.

Heima Smiles: Voted Most Likely To Be Completely Apathetic Whilst Decapitating You

Taking the Thanes as Thralls is probably our best bet to save their lives, if we're so inclined. We could set a fairly low bond for them to pay back, at which point they're free men.

Asking for a high weregild and then talking to our kinsman because it will be highly entertaining to see how nettled he is.

Voting to interrogate the squire mostly so we can inspect his weapon.

Edit: Did not realise we already had his sword!

That probably just means that they can't grow in power not that they don't keep the high stats and the frenzy lookalike

In more detail I think that the Thane system is basically if Odr was needed for everything in our cultivation so without land they might not be able to grow at all but they still might be quite dangerous.

So we just don't know.

Will they be crippled? Will the Thanes lose a big portion of their power like a (normal non Horra) Nidingr would? Will they be fine and just be unable to grow? Some combination?

It's information we don't have that we should probably think through before tying up cultivators and setting sail with them.

No thralls please. Gabriel will have strong feelings about us taking any since Steinarr made him one and that relationship is strained at best. I don't think its the thanes are worth making it worse.

Well we do know where their power comes.
'A very distant cousin to our own. They gain internal power from the land and convert it into external strength—a play on a rather common cultivation method, all things considered. The nuance is that they only gain power from land that they own, as has been granted to them by the King.'
but lets make sure:
@Imperial Fister Do the thanes keep their powers after Alfred gives their lands to other people?

If nothing else they will keep the high stats and all infusions as well as the budget puncture

My own guess is that stops their Internal Power income and thus stops their cultivation progress rather than just depowering them completely. Removing existing cultivation is unlikely. Not impossible, but unlikely.

I don't really care about saving the Thanes' lives. I care about not leaving them in a position where they blame us for the bad things in their lives and are inclined to come looking for us.

we looted his weapon and the armor, so he is pretty much only in his cloths now.... and we might just loot the spare armors if there is any in the fort!

Good point! Changing votes to looting.

Their funeral.

"Taxes," the Knight hisses. "A dozen men dead for taxes. Unbelievable." He curses in French under his breath. "I will have no further part in this," he lifts his visor a crack and spits, "tax evasion scheme."

He turns and starts to saunter off, much to your disbelief. He's just gonna leave, just like that? Is that something you can even do?

It's only as he climbs the pile of rock and rubble replacing the gatehouse that Stigulf takes a step forward. "H-hey!" It takes him a second to process his words before he can truly start. "You can't do that!"

Louis Dubois doesn't even bother turning around as he casts a solitary, upright finger behind him, "Fuck you, Danish-Dog!"

He clicks his spurs together and a ghostly specter of a horse appears beneath his legs. Grabbing hold of the reins, he wheels about and swiftly departs from the sea-fort battleground.
That was super cool. Diplomacy winning was worth it with this alone.
