On Billionaires and Press
Lex Luthor tossed his copy of the Daily Planet back onto the desk he was sitting at with a dissatisfied grunt. Mercy looked up from her LexPhone where she was coordinating the newest security plan changes with a raised eyebrow.
"Lane giving you a hard time again? Let me guess- she's claiming that the constant attempts by the terrorists is just a safety hazard to Metropolis and LexCorp should relocate to a place that is less populated?" Mercy asked with a sardonic smirk.
Lex snorted at that- he wouldn't put it past the reporter. Her unjustified snooping and pointed articles about LexCorp were getting on the grating and ridiculous side. But, this time, it wasn't that.
He turned the newspaper over to show the headline "Gotham's Favorite Son Returns!". A hard-nosed reporter going after moneyed interests or those in power, Lex could understand. It was so common and traditional that it was a stereotype in fiction and proved to be true in real life. But this?
"It's a soft piece- detailing his tragic background and how he has powered on through adversity to return to continue on his family's legacy. Really giving good press to both him and his company."
Which was why Lex was annoyed. Why go soft on Wayne and his company, which if you looked at it actually increased the medical costs in Gotham in the name of profit, and basically accuse Lex Luthor of being a danger to be watched over when all he did (that was known) was introduce new technology to the world? Did she have a personal vendetta against him? Something to look over and subtly question her sister when he had the time to speak with her (possibly when a shadowy organization wasn't actively trying to kill him).
Knowing his luck, Lois Lane just didn't like the shine on his head and the next time some person with power came to town she'd write a glowing article on him. Lex shook his head. That was pushing it a bit far.
"So, some kid gets good press and-" Mercy turned to look at the picture on the front page of the Daily Planet,"- let me correct myself: a very good looking, rich man, with a great sob story. Yeah. I could see it."
Lex raised an eyebrow at that.
"Just the picture? Really?"
"Look, Lex. I think our relationship is at a place where we can be truthful to one another. Right?"
Lex paused. Mercy was his closest...friend was the closest term he could think of. He trusted her intent and competence (though she was not as competent as he in most things- not a minus as few rarely were.)
He nodded.
"Well, look at him. He just screams: rich, handsome, and needing someone to hold him and make all the pain in the world go away."
Lex looked at the picture and really examined it for a moment. He still didn't see it.
"And me?"
"You look like the status quo and capitalism in human form. If they ever made a movie about the spirit of capitalism...they'd cast you. And, you know, the press likes to go after the status quo."
Lex scoffed at that.
"I'm hardly the status quo: I've revolutioned-"
"-multiple industries and improved the human condition. Yeah, I know, Lex. But, it's about appearances and not actually action. We're not stupid: Wayne hasn't done anything and probably will be a pretty bad shareholder. But, the image, and the story..." Mercy finished.
Well, Lex shrugged internally at that. Their story wasn't that different: both he and Wayne are orphaned billionaires. Lex more recently so. Actually, Lex mused, his own story was worse- Lex's father lived to make his life miserable. How much happier of a man would Lex have been if Lionel had passed on decades ago?
"Thanks for your feedback," Lex stated," I'll probably have to go to the welcome back party."
At that, it was Mercy's turn to frown.
"Why? That's just inviting danger- the assassins may attack."
"I know. But, there aren't many billionaires in the world. And, I can't avoid every get together- especially when its welcoming back a person with that story. Oliver, I could avoid- we know where we stand. But with Bruce?
We might start a good working relationship. Or not, but if I miss it then the press may really get speculating. I've had enough of that."
Mercy continued to frown as she sent a message to the security team. There was going to be a lot of planning to try and make sure that Lex was going to be safe. Oh, and the party guests (too).
