Sisters
Lois Lane was sitting at her desk, alone in the dark of her office save for the desk-lamp. It was another all-nighter for the intrepid reporter as there were always secrets that needed to be disinfected by the light of day. She was interrupted by a call on her new Lex-Phone. Despite her suspicion of Lex Luthor, the new phone was handy- as long as she used it only for non-work related and non-sources of information matters. She didn't trust LexCorp that much, after all.
"Hey, Lucy." Lois asked after she noted the caller ID- Lucy Lane. Her sister probably had some thoughts on the new article on Lucy's new boss...
"Seriously? The Dark Side of Metropolis' Favorite Son? You couldn't have just titled it "Hey, let's get Lucy fired!?!"
"Why, hello Lois. I just read your article, Sis. What a well-researched look into the company that I am working for, Lois," Lois said to herself while speaking with Lucy.
"Cut the holier-than-though stuff, Lois. I'm going to get an earful from Shuster tomorrow because of your article. And, its not like it says stuff that people didn't suspect. Newsflash: billionaire technical genius has personality and daddy issues. Yeah, not surprising."
"Maybe not that- but it really raises questions as to the questionable hiring practices of one of America's largest companies. That and the mystery of the assassination attempt- there's a lot more to it than we know."
"Questionable hiring practices? Nice- real nice."
"That's not what I meant."
"No, no. Because Lex Luthor will only hire monsters, right? Its a company Lois- a big company. Its not some sort of scary monster being led by a sociopathic monster."
"Well, the jury's out on the sociopathic part. You needed to be in the room- its a facial charm that's calculated. You sure you want to work for a guy like him?"
"As opposed to the many non-calculating CEOs of multi-billion dollar companies? And, no. If I want to work in this field its going to have to be with the company that employees almost a third of the city. And if I get fired, there aren't many big law firms that will hire me."
"He's not going to fire you- you can just sue. And, it'll look really bad," Lois reasoned.
"Oh, yeah. That's a great career booster: sued her employer for firing her based on her sister's reporting. You know they can just create a good reason. Its just- can you not write really negative articles about my boss while I'm working for him?"
"You know I can't ignore a story because of my personal connection."
"You can, you just don't want to."
"That's not true- the people deserve to know," Lois said with a tense tone in her voice. The entire conversation had started tense and just increased.
"Yeah, yeah. The people know- and then things get worse. Its like what happened with that prison-"
"Not this again-"
"If you just told dad-"
"Nothing would have changed! Dad would have just put the research under military control and continued it!"
"Wow. That's some faith you have in your family, Sis. Just...wow."
Lois didn't say anything for a moment. They'd been having this argument for years, now. Not about the exact issue, but about their father and his character (or lack thereof in Lois' opinion).
"Let's not talk about this- l how about lunch this weekend? At Pete's?" Lois offered.
"That's not going to make up for the shit that this is going to cause-"
"Its not supposed to- its not an apology. I didn't do anything wrong."
Lucy just sighed.
"I don't know what I expected when I called. I just- I have to go."
"Wait, Lucy-"
And then, the call disconnected. Lois put down her cellphone and sighed. Lucy would get over it- she always did. It was just going to be an uncomfortable few weeks.
Lois went back to her work, trying to put the conversation aside. Because, there was truth out there, and the people had the right to know.
