Ahh. Right. DC Martians are not a thing I think about often. Maybe if we succeed enough we could nab one of Jupiter's moons and terraform that once it is in an orbit over earth, or a new orbit in the inner solar system.
Given that straightforward FTL travel is also a thing in the DCQU, it might be quicker and more practical to terraform and colonize other planets.

Though the fact that there don't seem to be a lot of powers in the DCU who do this and any given "race" is very likely to be restricted to a single world... well, it makes you wonder if there are reasons that's the case. Interplanetary and interstellar colonization may be difficult.

If we are using real world logic it might be asteroid strikes on planets without fast orbiting gas giants are a lot more frequent.

Or it's simply more logistically and economically sensible to concentrate your population into a single star system or develop the technology to inhabit other species planets, since it's such a chore defending and developing them.

There is also a chance interstellar colonies have a habit of diverging in either culture or evolutionary trait from their home planet species and declaring independence, making it an unattractive avenue of investment compared to in system space stations.

It would be a good reason for most planets in most solar systems are... questionably habitable, which would in turn explain limited colonization efforts.

Though if a planet is habitable, an interstellar civilization probably doesn't need to fear asteroid strikes as a reason not to colonize it. Tracking all the asteroids in a star system and deflecting the ones that will be hitting a given planet in the next few centuries isn't going to be that hard for a sci-fi setting where entry-level starships already have powerful beam weapons and reactionless drives.

Or it's simply more logistically and economically sensible to concentrate your population into a single star system or develop the technology to inhabit other species planets, since it's such a chore defending and developing them.
This makes a lot of sense if you posit that it normally IS possible to "build tall" in a single solar system.

There is also a chance interstellar colonies have a habit of diverging in either culture or evolutionary trait from their home planet species and declaring independence, making it an unattractive avenue of investment compared to in system space stations.
This, I'm more skeptical of. First, because FTL travel speeds are canonically very high, which should make holding together an interstellar polity a lot easier. Second, because we know such polities exist, they just so often seem to be federations or empires welded together from a succession of "planets of hats."

Though the fact that there don't seem to be a lot of powers in the DCU who do this and any given "race" is very likely to be restricted to a single world... well, it makes you wonder if there are reasons that's the case. Interplanetary and interstellar colonization may be difficult.
So I can kind of elaborate on this a little bit.

Interplanetary and interstellar colonization can be very difficult for certain races. Imskians are tiny and Daxamites have lead be immensely toxic to them. There are also a whole lot of native species that are really dangerous and bad actors in the universe at large who will happily murder you if they come across you that makes interplanetary and interstellar colonization harder since the more you spread out, the more chances you have of having someone like say Flayt, destroy as many starships as possible, or the Blight start turning people into techno-zombies, or Evil Star attempts to mind control and enslave your race.

Furthermore not all planets develop at the same rates and so a lot of the more dominant powers (the Reach, the Khunds, the Dominators etc.) will conquer planets that they see get colonized, since they can reap all the benefit of the other races efforts with minimal cost to themselves. There is some degree of colonization going on but if you're in the wrong part of space and you colonize in a way that's too visible, your technologically superior neighbor might decide to take over everything you've built up and conquer your worlds.

There is at least some degree of colonization (Talokites have colonized at least eight worlds and Graxosians have at least five) going on though.

Edit: To clarify on the problems a bit, here are the barriers to colonization:
  1. Most planets are not habitable. Additionally certain species have biological and physiological factors that complicate things for them.
  2. Some planets have natives that can be immensely dangerous and make it into a death world. Even seemingly innocuous things like Black Mercy which is a plant can make attempting to colonize a world immensely dangerous
  3. Ships moving through space in large quantities can be dangerous as not only can it attract pirates and the like, it can attract one off nasty elements who can cause severe resource limitations and complications. For a basic example, if the Spider Guild go and attack and destroy 1/3rd of your colonization ships, all of a sudden you'll be facing immense complications.
  4. Even if you do successfully colonize a planet, there's always a chance that a larger more well established polity will arrive to take your stuff and conquer the planets you have colonized.
These four elements make it so that generally it's safer not to colonize or to simply join a larger pre-existing polity as a "planet of hats".

Although if you're avoiding colonization to avoid attracting the attention of interstellar nasties... Well, that sounds like a losing proposition in the long run, because it means you're unlikely to have the scale and economic base to fight the nasties off when they eventually find your home system.

Yeah it's not a winning strategy in the long run but it's certainly an appealing strategy when it takes effort and resources to find a viable planet that doesn't turn out to be a surprise death-world and there's a chance that you might lose a whole bunch of resources anyways. Because it's an appealing strategy a good number of planetary governments just turtle up and focus on shoring up the home base before later joining a larger polity either willingly or unwillingly.

There are of course a good number of exceptions to this (I've mentioned Graxosians and Telokites but Thanagarians, Kryptonians, Citadelians and Psions all also follow this pattern) and there are entities/races that do colonize other worlds.

You know if we want some stuff for space colonization we might want to finally take that action to find Thaddeus Romero Hoskins and then mug him. The guy becomes a supervillain obsessed with fleeing earth before it's "inevitably" destroyed. So he might have some nice stuff for us to use in our own space actions.

Hmm. If we combine it with solar refraction satellites and an learn about thermo dynamics to get something to reheat mars internally this could work, though maybe we super crit Lasers and that gives us something.
If we ever make something like solar refraction satellites we also need to look into changing light spectrum from yellow into red. You know why.

Unfortunately at the moment study sunlight action has ??? DC so I doubt that we have room to take it. Turn sunlight red would have been amazing counter to Kryptonians invasion.

With miniaturization tech being viable you can support any amount of population on a single planet. And if anything goes wrong just make bottled cities to double as space ships as to not repeat Krypton fate. Does not prevent all worst case scenarios but potentially less risky than colonization.

You probably still need a large amount of resources (assuming that you first need to create full scale version of city before shrinking it) but space mining is simpler than full colonization.

Well, it'd also fuck over plant life and so on if you did it for any length of time.

Still, it's not a bad thing.

It's kind of frustrating how the ??? DCs combined with the knowledge that we'll suffer significant penalties for any serious failures have deterred us from investigating a lot of things. @King crimson , I know you've remarked on how conservative the thread is sometimes, and I think that's a big part of it. The combination of hidden DC that are often suspected to be in the triple digits, plus the knowledge that if we fail by 50-100 points Bad Shit will probably happen, makes it very hard for options like that to win out over unambiguous and simple projects whose rewards are predictable.

I'm pretty sure city-bottling shrinking tech is the kind of thing that is rare among galactic civilization. Just because Brainiac has it doesn't mean it can be a routine part of people's plans for settling a new planet.

Well, we'll soon have some pretty strong two man teams and 4 Double downs, so it's feasible we could take it. Also, we have that special labs action this turn. After xeno tech and a good amount of points for monitoring and other stuff, we haven't really specified what we want to do with it.
[ ] [Lab] Light (19 points)
The cost for a light lab isn't much.
Well, it'd also fuck over plant life and so on if you did it for any length of time.
I think ten minutes, for any average kryptonean mid fight would be enough to knock them out and get them into a pair of kryptonite handcuffs.

Would you even need a planet? It feels like with shrink tech you could keep the bottle city in the back of a small, cloaked, fast ship and pop the people and a bunch of equipment out to strip mine and asteroid or small moon and leave to sell the pilfered resources before anyone cam along, thus maintaining a thriving mobile mining community on the down low.

Well, your mobile community is hilariously vulnerable to anyone who actually catches up with it, which is one drawback.

And more generally, my point was more that the vast majority of people who are interested in founding space colonies of any kind, mobile or otherwise, would likely not have the ability to do this kind of city-shrinking.

I like DC ??? actions in general for the utility of providing unknowns but I can see the problem in getting people to take them. I'll say that a lot of them aren't as bad as people seem to think.

That being said as a gameplay balance fix, I'm willing to indicate at least some actions for whom failure will be capped (meaning you cannot fail them by massive amounts). In exchange for capping failures I'll make low successes worse. I think that should at least help mitigate the problem a bit as it'll show that there are DC ??? actions that are safer, in that they can only do so much damage to you if they do go wrong.

Right off the top of my head:
[ ] Attempt to reverse engineer the Super-Tank captured in Markovia
DC ??? You have captured a tank that seems to be using highly advanced potentially alien technology to improve its offensive capabilities. Reverse engineering it can allow you to take these advancements for yourself.

Figuring out the tank and combining that with our vehicle operations would be something big to market to the military and use for our security, but we've been too worried about the failures (although I can understand that on a really bad roll, it'll trigger a self-destruct or blow up the lab). It could be the action to get Meena a reverse-engineering trait similar to Ivo's.
Alien Engineer: Whenever Ivo is assigned to a learning action that is far beyond the scope of human technology add +7 to the final result after all other bonuses are calculated

In many cases, the obvious reward for a low success on a DC ??? task is that now we know what the DC is and can prepare accordingly. :p

[x] [Event 10] Don't participate in the Thrown Against the Wall mini-event

(general heads up, Clown Hunt will not be occurring even though the vote I'm quoting doesn't mention it)

It's an interesting mix of things and I'm quite excited to see how more than a few of these actions play out. I won't talk too much about this stuff but I'm quite interested in seeing where the wind blows. I don't want to give away the game too much with things one way or another but I will say that I found the speculation and conversation around some of these to be rather interesting. I found a lot of the villain guesswork around "See You in the Funny Papers" to be especially interesting, as when people just had the title they guessed it was a Joker centric event and now the two guesses I saw were for Mr. Mxyzptlk and the Queen of Fables. I will not confirm or deny anything but I found the speculation fun and people's guesswork was generally pretty solid.

Friendly reminder folks, personal actions are generally not going to affect gameplay all that much. They can do so, but I strongly urge the thread not to try and metagame it and instead to vote for neat little story moments and slice of life stuff they'd like to see. On that note, I'd also like to remind you that you can attempt to get a write-in personal action. You won't get any exp from it, and it requires my approval, but if you've got an idea you think is neat feel free to float it to me.

I'm not going to blather on for too much longer, here's the update.

Personal Actions Next Time subvote
This subvote is a way for me to poll you guys. I tend to randomly cycle through which characters get picked for personal actions though I do tend to have a few pretty consistently show up. That being said it does mean that certain characters might not show up in the personal actions for a very long time. Now for people who might really like that character and want to engage with that character's personal actions that isn't the most exciting thing. As an attempted solution to this (and because I don't want to go back to giving you control over every character's personal action) I'm attempting this subvote as a sort of way to poll for character you want to show up in the personal actions next time. This is a continuation of an experiment started last turn. Feel free to vote for as many characters as you want to see in the next personal actions vote on turn 32. Please format your votes in the manner demonstrated below.

[ ] [Next] Insert the name of a character you want to see in the next personal actions vote here

As Ravens last child action is next turn, and considering what we have planned, I think it's worthwhile to have her next time.

Helena post Vengeance is interesting.

This will be Caitlin possibly during or after Louise leaves.

Planning to have Soibhan work on music turn 33 so it would be interesting to see what kind of options that gives.

Rose is coming back. She is probably automatic, but just in case.

Mick and Lisa are two of the people rose gets along with. There could be some good catching up options.
