Crystalwatcher's Magical Girl Quest!

So, random thought, how do you get the nickname "Sega" from "Natalia", which I'm 90% sure was Nep's Sister's actual name?

Here's a spreadsheet I made. It has my best guess at how our purchasable skills will improve. I assume Adamantium improved Solid Core's base resilience by 20, otherwise there's an oddity there. Hopefully this helps the thread picture what they can get with a given amount of EXP.

Actually, I'm fairly sure your numbers for Starshine are wrong. We know that Starshines "Danmaku" ability is "Full Auto" on sterioids. Full Auto, from what we've seen from the Team, grants 5 bonuses equal to 20% of the base damage of the weapon. Danmaku provided 10 bonuses equal to 25%(rounded down) of the base damage of the weapon.

I very much doubt those are coincidences.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't have enough data at the moment to judge. If I saw another weapon's Full Auto or the next level of Starshine I'd make the appropriate changes, but right now I only have one data point for each of those.

Right, going through looking for grammar errors, which means thorough re-reading.

I am now 90% sure that Sega is going to show up later, as a magical girl.
either as an enemy, or Juggernaut Core (although those may not be mutually exclusive...)
There are just too many hints and it makes every ounce of genre savviness I have twitch.

I'm kinda vaguely hoping that she doesn't.

...

But that's mostly because it'd be nice for my Pattern Recognition skill to fail more often so I'm surprised by things.

Anyway here's wondering if our ultimate attack in the future is just going 'CORE EXPOSURE' and just irradiating entire armies with Rei playing bodyguard for us. We get the nickname Nuke. No one doubts were from the Light Side as a result :V

Actually, could you perhaps go into detail about what the Divinty effect does? I feel that what knowledge we do have about it basically amounts to: causes big damage in anything it hits. More information would be helpful in determining how impressive this new acquisition is.

Is that something we are capable of deactivating when faced with enemies that resist Divine attacks?
More during next fight. It's how I've been revealing things in the quest so far.

Either there is an extra bonus for Adamantium which pushes the formula to 4.5 * 10 * 4 rather then the expected 4 * 10 * 4 in which case the rank up increase should bring us to BR 230. Or you made an error with the upgrade to Adamantium calculation in which case it should be 165 which the level up bonus should increase to 205.
Math Error. Forgot to add the original 5 resilience to the end score count.

Adamantium upgrades Base Resilience by 45 per level, but I forgot to add the original 5 you guys started with, so yeah. It's 230 not 225, sorry.

"Full Auto" does 20% of the base damage of the given weapon five times.

For Team GEAR's Anti-Demon rifles this means they do 250 plus five iterations of 50 a piece.

Thus: 500 damage total. Samael can sacrifice three of those bonuses to negate an enemy attack.

"Danmaku" does 25% of Base Damage ten times per cast. Thus 312 (rounded down) per casting of Starshine. Minus any outside modifiers.

"Quadra-Magic" allows the spell to fire four times at once, thus doing 1,248 damage total in a single cast.

So on. I've shown this in the story already, Full Auto during New York, the Base and the Mausoleum fights.

Right, going through looking for grammar errors, which means thorough re-reading.
I'm grateful, thank you.

Meh. I'm at least trying to add in twists to what's most likely coming. Like the Zombie thing.

If it starts getting too repetitive, let me know and I'll take a look at my plan.

First Kaliedoscope to feature her had her name blanked out except for the "N" at the beginning, and was roughly the right length. Plus "Natalia" fits with "Anastasia", so...

Oh, no, it's fine. It's not repetitive at all. :)

And I do want to see her come back, because that'll be fun.

Purity as an affinity causes extra damage to 'evil' things like zombies, demons, and eldritch omfgwhatisthatthing type creatures. Basic affinities from these are things like 'Blood' and 'Chaos'. Purity will do minor bonus damage to either of these as a simple matter of fact. The deeper into the 'Dark' affinities one goes though, the more damage Purity will exact from it's target. The reverse is also true though, as 'Corruptive' affinities (Slaughter and Evil being two of them) will do more damage to Purity the higher they are.
Probably worth keeping an eye out for. Purity vs evil opponents is a mutual supereffective. Kill each other FAST.

Divinity gets a bonus damage count against nearly everything. But Myth, Legend, and Epic affinities get varying levels of durability when clashing against it.
Affinity: Love | Justice | Myth Maker
...and I just realized that Candy Heart would have resisted Starshine while the evil seal would not. ;_;

...and I just realized that Candy Heart would have resisted Starshine while the evil seal would not. ;_;
Myth Maker and Myth are different levels, by my read.
Story Makers were the slowest. It took them forever to get to the same level as someone that had the Myth Maker, the next highest, affinity. From there, you had in order: Legend Maker, Story, Myth, Legend, Epic, and finally the recently revealed and highest growth rate: Divine.
Sadly not, she wasn't quite at that tier...
But if we're fighting Juggernaut Drive in the future it may come in useful

Early installment weirdness. Was going to use 'Neptune' but decided 'Sega was better. Might go back and edit that later.

Myth Maker is very different from Myth. Like... several levels different. Myth is the lowest where resistance to Epic and Divinity starts coming into play.

I think you've got another math error here. Starshine does 125 Base Damage, 25% of which is 31, which gives 125 + 31 * 10 = 435 per casting. I think you might have accidentally added the Base Damage as 1.25 which would explain how you got 312.

Also 435 times four is 1,740 total damage.

Grammar corrections part 2: electric bugaloo
Goes from Ruinous gear to the latest. Edits in red.
"You care to say that again you bitch?"

You went to the base's airfield with the intent to make a visit to Carnage as you had promised two days ago. Once there you had found... this. Your state of mind can be summed up as confusion.

"What, didn't hear me the first time horny?"

"That's it-"

"Gha-!"

Carnage has Truth pinned to the tarmac. Straddling her struggling form, the smile on her face confuses you rather thoroughly. At least, that was until Truth leverages her arms enough to force a head-butt. Carnage goes cross-eyed, rears back, and loses her hold on Truth. Temporarily freed, the taller girl thrusts her hips forward, upending Carnage and flipping her to the side. Instantly she rolls atop her, grabbing an arm and bending it behind her back. Pressed against the tarmac, Carnage grins.

"Oh, if this is how you wanted it, all you had to do was ask~"

Truth's face goes a bright red. You have no idea what the fuck you had walked in on.

"I- That- WHAT?!"

At least you're not alone in your confusion. Loosening her hold as her brain tried to process what was just said, Truth is unprepared as Carnage bucks. Thrown forward, Truth face plants into the ground. Carnage then shows off her flexibility as she folds herself into a semi-backflip to land on Truth's back and wraps her arms beneath the other girl's and run her fingers through her hair. Your mind, still in mid reboot, freezes again. The nose bleed starts.

"But I do so prefer to be on top though... so much more fun for us both in my opinion."

"I- Y-" Truth seems to be choking on something. "How did we get to this? How are you doing this to me?"

"Maybe I want my own little sister~"

Truth's brain shuts down just as you collapse from lack of oxygen and blood loss, drawing Carnage's attention to where you crumpled.

"Huh. That worked far better then I had intended. Two for one maybe?"

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

The White Dragon ignores your fidgeting from where you rested on his neck. Truth was curled into as small a ball as she could manage right below you as Carnage ran the metal brush she had been using last time you had come by along the dragon's side. You kept trying to clear your mind of the mass of lewd images that were stuck there while Truth tried to finish her reboot.

"You have absolutely no shame. Do you?"

The question provides sufficient distraction from the... other distractions. Your face still feels like it's going to melt though.

"Not a smidgen. Have you seen my Magical Girl outfit?"

And there goes your hope for a distraction. As your new-found libido goes for another Carnage X Truth-fueled joyride, Truth nearly screams in frustration. Sounds more like a drowning cat but the point is given. Carnage simply laughs at the both of you.

"I'm lesbian, as you both probably guessed. My mother and father didn't take too kindly to learning that little fact. Mom tried to kill me and dad... Well. He though he could 'fix' my orientation with the right methods. According the psychiatrists the whole mess screwed me up for life. I've adapted reasonably well, but I've been left with some... interesting proclivities. Or so I'm told."

This leads to you blanching and having flashback to your 'mother' while Truth simply stares at Carnage in horror.

You already know what your dreams were going to be about that night.

"Ya damn brat! I work my tail off to put food on this damn table and this is how you thank me? You little shits need to learn some damned respect!"

"M-mom! Please, stop! Your hurting her!"

"Shut up you little bitch! Don't you dare think ya're off the hook either!"

"Gah!"

"Anastasia!"

On the fourth day at the base you wake not to Jessica's alarm clock.

You wake the wailing of sirens.

You're out of your bed almost simultaneously as the rest of your team leaps from theirs, everything tinged red by the alert and memory already gone.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

"What's going on?" You follow your team at a dead sprint towards where the entire military compliment of the base seems to be funneling towards: the air fields. You hadn't bothered to get anything other then your skin suit on and transformed before your team began their rush to the helicopters. Once there James confronted the base commander, who was in an apparent argument with Rei. The leader of Truth's team is also there, also intending to find out where you were all needed.

Rei responds first. "New York and a small town in southern New Hampshire are under attack. Manhattan Island has already been taken, but the bridges out are holding. There's fighting along the rivers surrounding the island but..."

The simple fact that whoever was invading had come in through one of the major North American cities meant whoever was doing it was confident that they would be able to pull it off. Which said a lot because of the fact they were directly invading Earth.

When it came to the Local Dimensional Cluster, the Unified Darkness and Unified Light were divided along a roughly equidistant line. Relatively speaking anyway. The fact was the different 'dimensions' were lined up like a honeycomb structure. The tactics this lead to meant that the 'positioning' of those dimensions mattered when moving armies, despite some spells allowing the jumping of entire sections of the structure. Earth was positioned along the battle line between the two factions in such a way that to breach the Unified Light's line, one would have to either neutralize the Earth's ability to support the local dimensions or take Earth itself.

And that? That was a pretty tall order. Two Thirds of Earth's armies were spread thin across the nearly two dozen dimensions that made up the battle line in the war. But that didn't mean that last third that remained on Earth was a pushover. A single platoon of Human Infantry could smash most other opposition. A tank column tended to get entire groups of Arc Demons as responses. The fact that Earth's armies were spread so thin was so far the reason the war was in a stalemate. But attacking Earth meant you had to face that disparity in quality while focused.

Very few demon lords had the guts to try pulling that off. Especially after the Second Fall of Rome and the Oblivion Incident.

"So... what the problem?"

Your voice cuts off the arguing almost immediately as everyone remembers that your right there. The base commander sighs.

"The problem... is that the secondary attack is being made by Goddess Red."

And there was the clincher. That meant...

"Rei... will have to go to the location of the second attack. But... the number of Demons needed to take and hold Manhattan Island would..."

"It would require me to clear them out without significant casualties."

Rei's face is contorted in frustration and rage. It is obvious she wishes to be at both locations, but knows she can't. If she respond to the Manhattan crisis, it would leave Goddess Red free to do whatever it was that she was doing because there were no other Magical Girls capable of stopping her. But if she responded to Red, the forces fighting on Manhattan would take numerous casualties.

"Trust us." Rei starts and looks at you, while all the soldiers turn as well. You walk up to your 'owner'. "We can take care of New York. Trust us." She watches you for a moment before...

"Alright. I'll go find out what Goddess Red is after, and you all go purge Manhattan of it's little demon infestation." She's grinning. And you feel your spirits lift.

"Right!"

"Yes Ma'am!"

The soldiers are smiling now as well.

As you and Team GEAR run to your designated helicopters with Truth and Carnage ahead of you, you can't help but feel that everything was going to be ok.

Can you see me? Sega?

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

The sun is well into the sky by the time the relief forces arrive in the sky over Manhattan Island. Pillars of smoke stretch into the sky, screams echo through the air, and the smell of burnt flesh fills your nose.

And in the center of the city, five massive doorways. Each the size of a five story building, and marching out of them, massive columns of ten-foot tall demons. Your confidence is suddenly nowhere to be found.

"Five Hellgates. That many means more than one Duke is in on this." You're not entirely sure what Truth means, focused as you are on the seemingly endless ranks of demons, but her voice cuts through the sound of chopper blades easily, "If we're going to retake the island, those gates need to close. The tanks are ten minutes behind us, but I'm not sure if the barricades will hold those five minutes." [this last sentence parses oddly. can't identify why.]

"Then we go for the Gates. Plow through as quickly a we can and close them. One of us should seek to aid the barricades while the other seeks to close those gates." Carnage sounds slightly distracted as she gazes across the battlefield.

You can see demons trying to cross the water, but soldiers gun them down in droves. More try to rush the bridges but local defense vehicles use heavy machineguns to push them back. The whole thing is pure chaos. But you can tell with the number of demons coming through it won't last forever.

"Then I'll go help the barricades. This is your kind of battlefield Carnage, so I'll leave it to you to handle the Gates."

She nods, and they both turn to you. "Who're you going with Solid Core? Your choice."

You turn to James and your team: they all nod at you.

Your choice...

"If those barricades fall, then this is all for nothing. I'm too weak right now to help directly, but... I can do at least that much."

Truth looks at you with surprise. Carnage... with pride? Her smile is a small thing. But you can't help but feel that she thinks you've made the right decision. You smile softly at her yourself, but the moment is interrupted by the helicopter pilot.

"Drop Zone one is coming up. You girls ready back there?"

You turn to your team and nod. They return it: GEAR is ready. Carnage's smile turns cruel, and Truth summons her massive blade.

The machine dives fast, the small group of helicopters bringing reinforcements to the beleaguered defenders of New York announcing their presence with the attack helicopters opening up with a rain of missiles. Explosions fill the air as the helicopter swings to a stop at the edge of Manhattan's largest park, you can't remember it's name but you can easily identify the five massive gates in it's center.

Carnage leaps free of the Helicopter and your off again as the White Dragon swoop in, unleashing a devastating breadth of fire.

Winged demons rise from the crowds to meet the attack choppers in the air, while the transport helicopters scatter into smaller groups to drop their cargo off at the barricades. Your own transport swings low, close to one of the heaviest fights and you leap free with Truth. Your wings ignite from your back and you rocket down, guided by an instinct you barely understand and flip before reaching the ground, Panzer Blade pulled back.

"Celestial Severance!"

That same instinct guides your hand as you swing. A white pane of energy sweeps forth from your weapon, tracing a line of light across everything before you-

It's like an apocalypse. The two buildings to either side of the road come down in an avalanche, literal walls of steel, glass, and concrete. Not a single Demonic Soldier from the platoon survives your opening attack, crushed to little more than paste.

Truth hits the ground next. Not even blinking an eye at your opening attack, she launches herself forward, over the rubble that used to be a building and at the next group of demons. Stunned from the sudden violent death of their comrades they don't even get a chance to raise their weapons before truth is on them.

A single swing, both hands behind it, and not a single one survives.

The Equalizer pulps through bone and armored flesh with ease, It's sheer weight backed by Truth's own significant strength renders their pathetic attempts at guarding meaningless. And just like that twenty demons are dead.

It hasn't even been ten seconds into the fight.

Team GEAR hits the ground, veterans all, they're already inured against the sudden escalation they don't even blink. They unclip themselves from their grapple lines and ready their guns before rushing past you to clamber over the rubble left behind from your attack. Truth straightens as they pass her, and you leap after them, using a short burst of flight to catch up.

You and your team almost sprint around a corner, coming to the on-ramp of the first bridge. The barricade is gunning down the most recent assault of demons, leaving a bare handful holding a siege-point at the end of the bridge where cover for approaching forces could get in close for a charge.

Truth bursts through a wall and is among them before GEAR is even in range.

"See No Evil."

Your line of sight is blocked, but James, who is ahead of you quickly covers his eyes.

A vague sense of light and the five demons behind the siege walls are-

Slaughtered. Those who you can see lose their heads as they literally explode. Some with enough force to rip their torsos to pieces. Blood fountains everywhere as bone and viscera fly through the air to rain upon the defenders and your team as you all rush up. Jessica and Michael quickly plaster several of the makeshift walls with C-4, attaching detonators, and like that Team GEAR and Truth are past the siege-point and the makeshift cover is going up in flames.

You don't stick around to celebrate: there are more barricades in need of help.

Your run meets no more resistance on your way to the second barricade. But you do catch a glimpse of the park where Carnage was dropped off. And from what you could see: it was a bloodbath. A discus of red blood spun in place, sucking in Demons by the droves, ripping them to pieces. The White Dragon devastated entire tracks of demonic forces itself with pillars of flame.

Carnage obviously didn't need that much help.

It takes only two minutes at a dead sprint to reach the second Barricade... and it is much worse off then the first. A dozen demons man the Siege Wall, along with one creature you haven't ever seen before personally.

It stands almost twice as tall as the Demon Soldiers. It's armor is thick, and it's ax is broad. And the lesser creatures around it are obviously scared more of it then the Human guns guarding the Barricade. Not like it was going to save them.

Truth hits the Siege Wall like a juggernaut, smashing through the make-shift defense like so much paper, and opens with a massive swing.

The world seems to shatter from the noise. As if it's unable to contain the sheer fury unleashed from your weapons: the remaining six Demons are practically obliterated near instantly, being reduced to clouds of blood and flesh.

Truth crosses the remaining distance to the Demon Commander, but it's turned around and ready for her. She lunges for it's throat-

(Equalizer: 300 Base Damage, +43 Dice, +15 Momentum = 358 Total Damage

But he manages to partially dodge. Instead of loosing his head, the Commander ducks aside, instead taking the blade to his shoulder. The Equalizer bites deep. You an almost hear the weapon grind against bone as it slides forwards, carrying Truth towards her victim. But the Commander isn't a pushover.

He swings his ax with what force he can muster. Truth twists desperately to the side, but is still clipped by it's path arc. You see a streamer of blood fly from her...

But to her everything is moving in slow motion as she retaliates.

It's brutal. Using the momentum imparted on her from the hit, she spins in mid-air, her blade singing through the air at a speed something it's size shouldn't be moving. A vertical sweep slams into the Demon's faceplate, throwing him off balance, and almost throwing him clear off his feet.

Truth lands on her feet, balance low, and feet spread wide a she sweeps her sword across the thing's chest. The Equalizer plows through it's armor with ease, rending flesh, and breaking bone. The Commander is woefully unprepared for the over-head double handed strike that she finishes with, nearly cleaving him completely in half.

It's a testament to his durability that it doesn't. He stumbles, blood flooding from him in a fountain as his armor falls to the ground in countless pieces. Sheer determination all that has him on his feet by this point. Then you're in his face, Purifier Beam charged and glowing.

"Disappear."

(Purifier Beam: 45 Base Damage, +19 Dice, +10 Opening = 74 Total Damage

The energy beam doesn't even slow. The smell of charred flesh joins the smell of blood as the Commander's corpse literally bursts into flames. His scream chokes off almost instantly as skin and flesh dissolve to ash in moments. His body disperses on the winds.

You're breathing hard. The seven of you haven't had a break since the initial drop, but with the death of the Demon Commander, you have a chance to take a breath. A roar from the direction of the Gates draws your attention.

You see three of the flying demons from earlier dogpile onto the White Dragon and pull it from the sky.

"Ah- Carnage!"

Truth turns to you, just in time to see Carnage's dragon fall from sight behind the buildings.

"That's definitely not good." She turns to look at you. "You want to go help her? I can probably help the last of the barricades on my own but..."

You grimace and clench your hand into a fist against your chest. Carnage might need the help, but there was no telling what was hitting the last of the barricades.

You turn towards James. The nominal leader of Team GEAR is frowning towards the center of the island. "I vote for helping Carnage... But the decision still rests with you in the end Solid Core."

You look towards the park...

Truth is staring off towards where the White Dragon fell. "Positive. The tanks should be here soon. I'll clear the last barricade then come help you. Stay alive, alright kid?"

You tactfully refrain from commenting on how you're only a year younger than her. Instead you nod determinedly as Team GEAR reloads their weapons. With a grin Truth turns back down the road and leaps away without a word. No longer bothered with letting you keep up, she speeds off.

Then you and GEAR are on the move. Your position from the second barricade means a mad dash through the center of the Island in order to reach the central park where Carnage was facing the main invasion force alone. And for the first three streets it's relatively quiet.

Then you run into your first demons.

The look on his face conveys his disbelief as she promptly puts a round through his skull. He dies in pain and confusion.

After the wrecking of what you assume was an overwatch, you and your team make haste towards the park. It is immediately obvious that the reason you haven't run into any more demons besides the group from before was because they had much larger fish to fry. How?

You barely turn onto the street surrounding the park before tripping over a Demon Commander's brutalized corpse.

The smell is the first thing to hit you. The stench of blood and charred flesh fills your nose as you take in the battlefield.

"Army Killer" they called her. And an apt title it was. One on one Carnage was an exceedingly difficult opponent to overcome. Why or how you had no idea... But in the same breath one would always comment on how sending an entire army against her was a fools errand. When you had first heard this you didn't understand how such a paradox was possible... But now, gazing upon the Park you could understand.

Hell's armies carpeted the ground, thicker then grass. Two or even three corpses deep in some areas, not a single corpse was truly intact. Trails of fire crisscrossed the field. Blood ran into literal rivers as the ground drank it's fill from Carnage's tally.

In the time it had taken you, your team, and Truth to clear two of the Barricades, Carnage had literally wiped out an army.

And over the literal mounds of corpses, just in front of the Hellgates, Carnage stood proudly. A thousand and more demons flooding from the gates in a mad attempt to drown her in sheer numbers... And right behind her is the injured form of the White Dragon. Wings in tatters, scales broken, and bleeding from more wounds than you believed anything could survive.

Surrounding it are five of the flying demons from earlier, dead or good enough they might as well be for all the difference they could make. And that is where you notice how it all went wrong:

Ahead of the surging tide of demons is a single massive form. A sixth Flyer, dozens of times Carnage's size, virtually unharmed it stands tall before the Army Killer. And you know, with the Dragon wounded as it is, she won't win. "We need to help her!"

"Right!" Team GEAR doesn't even hesitate as they follow you into the coming maw of destruction.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

"Gha... ah." A barely parried blow, Carnage skids back. She cannot dodge, for if she does, it would leave the Dragon Open for an attack. In it's state, it cannot defend itself as it otherwise could. It is little more than a holding action. One that she could not sustain.

It's a good thing you arrive when you do, then.

The wall of bullets tear into the beast with vengeance. Blood flies, and it's pained roar drowned out by the bark of GEAR's guns. It leaps in an attempt to get away, but crashes back to the ground. A small part of your mind notes that if this keeps up GEAR might become well known on the simple fact of just how far out of their weight class they hit.

Murphy then promptly takes that as an invitation.

The beast breaths deep, and you scatter. A blast of Hellfire from it's mouth barely misses hitting any of you, but it proves sufficient for a distraction as it lunges for the White Dragon again. Carnage leaps to intercept, catching the Hell Beast's claws across her back. A flash of light, and she is knocked away, unmarred from the attack, but it succeeds in opening a path to the wounded beast. None of you are in position to intercept again as it lunges... And somehow you know that if it manages to kill the Dragon, then Carnage would die as well. And part of you vehemently rebels at the idea of a friend dying right in front of you.

So, despite all the warning to play it safe, all the order to keep yourself alive, you make a very stupid move.

A burst of flight, and you hang above your allies as the Hell Beast rushes for the Dragon.

An instant later you're atop it's head. Taken by surprise, the creature bucks. This is a very bad thing for whatever is on it due to spikes: something you learn first hand as it's horn rushes you.

Pain. The damage from the Spawn of Mayhem is nothing compared to this. You nearly white out instantly from having your guts nearly torn to shreds by the single blow. How you remain enough sense to grip the horn before it rip itself free and finish you off, you have no idea. Your body is on automatic, your mind a blank noise from sheer pain. Nothing remains besides the agony.

But somehow. Somehow... You manage to raise the Panzer Blade.

"Celestial Severance..."

Your voice is weak from the pain. As the spell slips from your lips, death descends. The results speak from themselves.

Blood everywhere. Yours is a brilliant scarlet, while the demon's is a deep, almost black red. Something thumps against the ground, and rolls away as you yourself slam into the dirt. Pain fills your everything. You cannot think through it, you cannot see, you cannot hear, you cannot feel.

Everything is white, but you can tell that the army is coming. You cannot pull yourself to your feet, the pain too much, but you manage to raise your face from the blood soaked ground. What you see is awe-inspiring despite the pain.

Carnage sweeps through the oncoming Demon horde like a juggernaut. She blazes a trail of pure death towards the towering gates, screaming in rage. You watch as the wounds on the White Dragon heal as she slaughters her foes. GEAR stands around you, gunning down any demon stupid enough to try getting closer.

And coming down all that... [a word is missing here, but I'm not sure what.]

Tanks.

Each larger than any machine before them that had ever born the title, they advanced upon the Gates. Titans of Steel, their treads are turned by wheels larger than you are. Their guns spew death like no other.

Nothing in the Demonic army before them has a chance.

"Like shit... My stomach hurts really, really bad." A part of you wants to try and sit up, but the other part that was cataloging how much your stomach hurt beat it down with enthusiastic brutality. "How's the fight? Did we win?" Now that you know your alive, you needed to figure out what happened. Priorities.

"Hm. The fighting is over. After you killed the Hell Beast the rest of Team GEAR and I stayed with you while the Counter Force cleared the city of any stragglers." Jessica turns away from you, grabbing a jug of water from your bedside table to fill a cup with. Once the cup is filled, she passes it to you. "Carnage took out the gates, and we set up a triage center towards the northernmost barricade. We brought all the wounded here to recover enough to move back to base... You're lucky you know?"

You blink, "Lucky? How so?" The water feels heavenly against your throat.

Jessica is smiling now. "There are tree known types of Magical Girl transformations. The most common is when the Magical Girl's power infuses their body directly, causing changes and allowing them to reach super-human ability. Almost all Magical Girls have this kind of transformation. The problem is that any damage they take in this form carries over to their regular human body." She downs her own glass of water, before propping her feet onto your bed, "The second most common type, and until recently thought to be the only other type, is when the Magical Girl creates a spare body to use for the transformation made out of their magic. They'd store their human body somewhere and use the magical body to fight."

You open your mouth... then close it. "So... what's the third type?"

Her grin is vicious. "The third type is when the Magical Girl apparently replaces her Human body with a magical construct as well as using a spare magical body for combat."

And for a moment you find yourself staring at her with incomprehension. When it dawns on you, you actually drop your cup.

"As far as the lab coat can tell, you no longer have an actual human body."

The wet sensation from your spilled cup slowly spreading across your lower legs leads to your brain resetting.

"I'M NO LONGER HUMAN?!"

A nurse across the tent jumps at your shout, and her clipboard goes flying out the 'window' to brain a trooper smoking a cigarette.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

A while later, after Jessica had managed to calm you down with a lot of pudding and hugs, your curled up on your bed as your teammate dumps the small collection of pudding cups into the trash. "So... how's the team? I kinda went out in the middle of the fight and... well, you're the only one here right now. So..."

"Don't worry. Save for you, we all got through that without a scratch. Though... your move did give us all quite the scare. We've agreed to let Rei do the scolding after we meet up with her next, but Richard is a bit miffed right now so he's off moping in the mess. James is giving his report, Michael is... I'm actually not sure. Samael is moping with his magic books." She returns to her chair, propping her feet up again, "Over all we're good, but worried about you. I already sent a message to them to let them know your ok. Nothing bad."

You grin, and scratch at the back of your head at that, "Sorry. It... it just seemed like a good idea at the time and... Part of me felt that if Carnage's dragon died then she would... and I... kind of panicked."

Jessica's eyebrow raises. "How did you know about that little tidbit?" The tone of her voice is wary, but the curiosity is there.

But... the question brings you up short. "What tidbit? I was acting off instinct or something."

"Carnage's relation to her Dragon is... Complicated." Jessica's feet drops, and she leans in close to you, "It's not a very well known fact, and those of us that know try to keep it under wraps but... Carnage and the White Dragon have their lives linked. Totally and Completely. One dies, the other does as well. It allows them to synchronize their attacks like no-one's business, but it's also a major weakness, since the Dragon is actually easier to kill then Carnage is in a way. So..."

"If the Darkness found out, then Carnage would be far easier to kill."

It made a lot of sense actually. Each Magical Girl had a weakness. The trick was finding out what that weakness was. It also tended to be the cause of fifty percent of all deaths in Magical Girls.

Then... what was your Weakness?

Putting that thought aide, you decide to lead the conversation into the next topic. "So... how is Carnage doing anyway? Last I saw her she was rushing the Gates."

"Oh, she's fine. She's with Truth right now in the intensive care unit actual- I shouldn't have said that."

You're up, out of your bed, and out of the infirmary tent before the pain from your gut even registers that you had moved and starts screaming obscenities at you with great enthusiasm.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

"What happened to her?" You're leaning heavily against the makeshift crutch that Jessica had given you. Your stomach really didn't agree with the sprint from the infirmary. But it, and everything else around you takes a back seat to Truth, who lay in the bed, unconscious and in her human form. (You note that she's kinda cute.)

The reason she was in the intensive care unit though was obvious: an entire arm was torn off, shoulder and all. The bandages around her torso are red from blood, and with her legs in casts whatever peace it could have given the image is lost. Carnage is asleep against the bed, head propped up by one hand as she snores softly. A blanket is draped around her shoulders, drooping slightly.

"There was a Class Three demon at the last barricade. She barely managed to hold it off before the Tanks got there. Passed out right after the reinforcements killed it, had to carry her back here to get treatment. She survived, but no one's sure how she managed to."

You limp slowly over to the empty seat next to Truth's bed. The weight of your decision to rush to Carnage's aid suddenly hits you. You had left Truth to run alone to the last barricade without help. And that had almost gotten her killed. Sure you had managed to save Carnage but... You feel tears well up behind your eyes. Truth's injuries were a direct result from your choice. "I'm sorry... Truth."

You sob silently as Jessica places a hand on your shoulder. Her comfort is warm, but lacking against the guilt. It is there you remain until Carnage wakes up, and finds the two of you sitting vigil with her.

"Hey, when did you two get here?"

"Just a bit ago. Nepgear here has been beating herself up over her decision since we got here."

You barely register their voices in the background, the pain of your own injuries ignored.

"Have either of you eaten yet?"

"No. Nep woke up not even ten minutes before she found out Truth was here. I was thinking of going for some food, but I don't know if I should leave her here alone."

"I'll keep an eye on her. Just remember to pick me up something as well, ok?"

"Alright. I should be back soon."

There's a noise of boots on the ground as Jessica leaves. As the tent closes, you hear Carnage rise from her seat and drag it with her around Truth's bed to where your sitting. The feeling of warm flesh pressing up against you, and a blanket falling around your shoulders raises you from the drowning guilt as Carnage pulls you into a hug.

"I lost my first teammate to a choice like this. Save one or the other. His name was William. Got pinned down by a pair of Crystal Horrors. The problem was another teammate was on the run from a pack of foot soldiers. I only had the time to save one of them or risk my entire team dying. So... I went for the easier of the two. Saved Blake and made a break for the portal. Last thing William ever told me was how he didn't blame me fore the choice, and to kill a few more demons for him. Then I got through the portal and the artillery strike wiped the Unified Darkness base off the map. Never really forgave my self for that."

You curl up into a ball and lean into Carnage's hug. You say nothing, and she continues.

"The rest of my first team died the following engagement. A bunch of Horrors nuked our part of the line with some kind of area-of-effect super spell that I survived because I was trying to reach something I had dropped. Got a second team not long after. We never got around to choosing a team name before our first engagement where we were cut off from the main Angel forces and overrun. It was where I learned that so long as I had enemies to fight I couldn't die. My third team died off slowly, one or two after every third engagement. After them... I just couldn't bring my self to accept a new team. So I've been fighting alone since.

"When you found me at the base I... All I saw was just another little girl in over her head, and probably wasn't going to last past her first week. Your offer of friendship wasn't what I was expecting and... I'm still not sure how to take it. Truth is the only person that ever actually came to me for friendship after my last team died. Now she's here and..."

She's trying to keep talking. You can here the force behind each words she grinds out through the choking grief. You can see your sister. Both at the height of happiness during your birthday as well as the remains of her body beneath her truck. The grief is there. Mingling with the guilt...

You unwrap yourself from your ball and instead wrap your arms around Carnage. Her arms wrap around your shoulders as you bury your face in her chest, tears falling in thick streams from you both.

"I'm tired of all the bloodshed."

The cleanup of Manhattan Island goes smoothly. Civilians are released from bunkers throughout the city and the Military sets up a forward post just in case the portals are re-opened and need to be closed again. All the wounded are loaded up in long-range helicopters to be taken to a different facility with better medical equipment while those still operational are loaded up to return to their respective bases.

Truth never wakes up before everyone leaves, going with the wounded to the hospitals while you and Carnage ride with Team GEAR back to your base.

The ride is quiet and somber. Any thoughts on the battle are quietly shelved, and any other conversation is killed by the atmosphere before it even starts.

It remains this way until a sword suddenly tears through the top of the helicopter and embeds itself in your seat between your legs.

"What?"

A shout and everything goes to hell.

The world dissolves. You jump, and someone tackles you. Gravity falls out from under you. Red light starts to flash. Sirens going off. Spinning. Impacts against the walls. The sound of metal tearing through metal. Blood flies. Pain from your injuries. Your screaming. Fire everywhere. [can't tell if that "your" should be a "you're". either could work in context.]

The helicopter slams into the ground and everything goes black.

You come around, with something on top of you, and blood flowing down your face. The sky is dark, flames crawling across the ground as several burning buildings swim into focus around you.

A chill as you realize it's Richard laying limp across you. "Richard?"

You twist carefully, feeling the edges of something sharp slice your arm. Biting back a whimper, you grab his shoulder, and shake.

He slides off you, the blades impaling his back clanking with a note of finality as you realize he's dead. You stare insensate at the sky as you realize the blood drenching you is from him.

"Nepgear!"

Your nickname pierces the rising horror. You sit up swiftly, "Jessica?" You see her, propped up against a piece of the helicopter, sans helmet. "Jessica!" You scramble to your feet, ignoring the splashing puddle of blood you had been laying in. "Jessica! It's Richard! He's-"

"I know kid." Then you realize what your seeing. Jessica isn't propped up against a piece of the Helicopter: she's nailed to it, and her legs are missing. "I know... James and Carnage went to try and figure out what's happening. Sam and Mike are keeping an eye out. We thought you were dead as well." Considering the position you were in and the blood? Not surprising. "Would have checked on you but as you can see I'm kind of in need of a leg up."

You choke out a laughing sob at the attempt of a joke. The flow from her legs is sluggish, and you know she doesn't have much time left. "What happened?"

"The helicopters were all shot out of the sky. Not sure what else besides that. And it's kind of obvious."

You nod but... "I remember a sword. It plowed right through the top of the helicopter before..." You also tactfully refrain from pointing out the dozen of swords littering the ground around you, and the ten or so sticking out of Richard.

And the one speared through Jessica's chest.

In hindsight it's kind of obvious what exactly happened.

"What should I do Jess?"

"Well... Considering I'm on a timer here, sticking around would probably be pointless. You should go help everyone else and let them know you're still alive."

You look down at the sword stuck through her.

"I... I can't. I just can't..." You fall to your knees. Your reality is unraveling around you. "I... I can't just leave you here Jess. How do you expect me to just run off without you?"

As you sob, the older woman smiles softly at you. Your not sure if it's because the pain has passed or that she has blocked it out. Her hand suddenly on your head catches your attention. "It's alright kid. Can't really blame you for it. Help me pull this out, would you? I'm kind of tired of hanging here."

You nod, before standing and gripping the blade. A nod, and sharp yank, and the blade is free, allowing Jessica to drop to the ground with a thud and a grunt of pain. Tossing the blade aide, she allows you to pull her into a hug, pressing her bloody face against your chest. You sit there amongst the burning wreckage, holding Jessica close, for your comfort or hers your unsure. But...

"You know. I always hated all those magical girl shows on the TV."

You blink. "Really?"

She nods, her hair brushing against your skin. "Yeah. My city had our own local magical girl. Seeing all those shows romanticizing what she went through on a regular basis always pissed me off. She was out somewhere on the D9-8 front most the time, before Reluxus fell. Me and the other kids would gather together once a month and collect letters for her from everyone in the town and ship them out. Once in a while she'd send back some responses. But... She died, right after Hope."

"Hope? But that was..." Your gut drops. Hope was a relatively small dimension. It was also where the Goddesses splintered. And the War entered it's current stalemate. It was when the Unified Light's own hope had died.

"She witnessed the battle. Got wounded from the crossfire, but died when her evacuation group was hit. She's what made me decide to join the Counter Force." She adjusts herself so she's laying flat against you, "I'm glad. That I got to help you. Even if..."

She trails off. And as the silence continues, you blink and reach for her hand. As it falls from her lap and lands in the dirt, you know what has happened.

Jessica Roberts has died.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

You are numb as you pull the swords from Richard's back so you can drag him to lay next to Jessica. As you lay your former teammates next to each other you kneel next to them. "Thank you. For everything." You don't know what else to say to them. You don't have the time for a proper burial, and you're not physically strong enough to carry either of them with you away from the flames. In either form.

So you do what you can. It only takes you a few minutes to lay them flat and pay whatever respects you can, but you find yourself numb. You had known the two of them for all of four days but...

They had been friends. In the wake of your sisters death both Jessica and Richard had been there for you with the rest of Team GEAR. Sure, Richard had cursed you to continuing your stupid nickname, "Neither of you deserved this." And with that you stand, you had a team to find.

You climb from the wreckage of your helicopter. Once free, you transform into your magical girl form in a flash of light and push off from the ground to see the damage to your immediate area. All around you buildings burn lightly, yet to catch into full infernos. Michael and Samael aren't in immediate sight, but you can hear their guns around the corner. And so you follow them.

And it's immediately obvious that things are going bad for them. A small pack of demons are huddled behind broken debris from another helicopter, it's crew and passengers already slaughtered, as Sam firs short bursts from his rifle to keep them at bay. Michael, from what you can see is injured, missing a forearm, while Samael is limping from a gash in his side.

It is into this fight you plow.

Sam euthanizes the soldier he shot while you set the other on fire with your Purifier Beam.

Once everything is over, you nearly tackle Samael with a hug. "Sam!" Thankfully you remember his wound in time to keep from tackling him and instead simply grab him in a hug.

The man grunts, but manages a grin, "Hey kid. We all thought you bit it. How's Jess?"

And like that your good mood dies. "She..." You clench a fist, and Sam suddenly sobers.

"Sorry. Was it before or after?" He doesn't need to clarify. And the way you almost curl up standing is answer enough for him as he pulls you into another hug. "Dammit. Sorry kid. We'll figure out what's going on and make sure they get funerals. Alright?" You nod into hi shoulder, forcing the grief down so you can move.

"How's Mike?"

"I'm alive! But I'm not going to be much help in a fight." You jump at his voice. Michael had clambered out of the make-shift hidey hole that he and Samael had been hiding in while you had talked to Sam. His arm was bandaged up rather well, while you also realize that Sam's side was bandaged as well. "Found some first aid kits in these Helicopters. Were on our way back to Jessica to get her stabilized before we got pinned down by these demon motherfuckers. Sorry we couldn't get back sooner." You resist the urge to break down again and take a deep breath instead.

"We need to find James and Carnage. After that... I'm not sure." Your teammates both look at you in understanding.

"Last we saw them they were heading towards the air field. If any helicopters from the flight survived they'd land there."

"Lets go then."

The three of you make a limping pace towards the Air Field. And strangely enough don't run into any other demons before reaching it. The confusion mounts from what you find.

A handful of helicopters had apparently managed to land, but their troops and crew had been collectively slaughtered. The dead litter the tarmac as you and Michael slowly work your way out into the open. Sam clambers atop a turned-over fuel truck to give overwatch.

You are the one to find Carnage and James. And a tiny part of you wishes you hadn't.

The Second Strongest Magical Girl, and Strongest Fighter of the Forces of Darkness.

Goddess Grey. The Blacksmith.

Simply laying eyes on her nearly causes your heart to stop. She exudes an aura of power on nearly the same scale as Goddess Gold.

Your knees almost give out as someone speaks.

"Carnage! Get out of here! I'll try to hold her off."

"Not a chance! That bitch killed Nepgear!"

Kneeling in front of Grey is Carnage and James. Carnage is missing an arm. You can see it laying on the ground not far away along with her blade, a thick trail of blood crossing the ground between them. James' armor is ruined. His breastplate covering little more than his stomach, thin trails of blood leaking through rent metal. His gun is missing as he holds up a broadsword he had obviously picked up from the hundreds of weapons speared into the ground.

"No time to argue goddammit! Here she comes!"

It's an amazing sight.

A spear appears in Grey's hand in a flash of light, and she thrusts it forward, faster than anything you've ever seen before. And it should have ended it. There and then. But James' wasn't one to go quietly.

He moves his blade, a fraction of the speed of the incoming attack, but he moves it.

And somehow he deflects the spear. The weapon bucks in Grey's hand, and it goes wide. Opening presented, he goes for an attack.

Another flash and a short sword deflects the stolen broadsword.

Back and forth it goes. Goddess Grey is like an avalanche of steel. Swords, spears, axes, maces, cudgels, flails, and more. So many weapons you find yourself nearly catatonic from the sheer variety alone. Weapons you've never seen alongside weapons out of fantasy, to weapons that could have been mass produced in an earlier era. And she wields them all with peerless skill.

And James does the impossible by holding her back. When the broadsword breaks, he snatches up a longsword. When that breaks a short sword. Then a spear. An axe. One weapon to the next as the previous fails. He does something a Human shouldn't be able to and matches one of the most powerful existences to ever exist and holds her in a stalemate.

Sword deflected by ax. Spear by Mace. Axe by sword. Mace by ax.

Again and again he does the impossible. And you cannot help but feel humbled. But it quickly becomes obvious that doing the impossible weighs upon his merely human body. He's tiring quickly, and it's obvious he cannot last much longer without aid.

So you do yet another very stupid thing.

The blast from the Purifier Beam travels at the speed of light. You cannot measure the time it takes for it to lance across a distance that is less then insignificant to such.

The flat of an ax meets it halfway there, and your are stunned stupid from the bullshit.

The fighting ceases instantly. From the collective looks of surprise on everyone's faces even they hadn't expected something like that to happen. Goddess Grey stares at you. A glimmer of something beneath her eye draws your attention. Somehow visible to you, even at this distance: the slight edges of swords. Just beneath her skin.

"Holy shit."

A fragment from the destroyed ax had nicked her. And that was almost as stunningly impossible as what James had been doing before your interruption.

"Nepgear!" Carnage's voice breaks the trance, and everyone's eyes flow to her. "You're alive!"

"Umm... Yes?" Your intelligence shines through your comment.

Samael and Michael both come barreling around the corner of the overturned vehicle that had been blocking the light as Goddess Grey turns fully to you.

"You... I do not know."

Grey's voice is deceptively soft. Almost like woven velvet. But she stands unnaturally still.

"You're lucky. I have to leave before Big Sis gets here."

The surviving members of Team GEAR as well as Carnage all blink in surprise at that as she turns away. Sam tries to raise his weapon but you quickly grab it and force it down.

A wave and a black doorway opens in front of her. And after a moment, she steps through.

You let out a shaky breath as it closes.

The sun is slowly climbing over the horizon as the fires finally die out and Golden Goddess' group returns. Rei finds you shifting through the burnt wreckage of Barracks 3, pulling out the few items that had been able to survive the fire. You're trying very hard not to think about the number of soldiers that had died last night to Goddess Grey' attack.

"Hey."

You make an affirmative noise in response, but keep looking.

"Heard you met Ichi last night. Also heard about what happened to Jessica and Richard. Carnage told me you were over here going through the remains..."

You force down the spikes of emotions that the names bring. Mechanically cog what motions that didn't require their input.

"The dead are going to be given last rites later today. Then we're going to be moved to a new base. Come find me if you need me."

She turns away, probably off to salvage something herself but...

"..." Your voice cracks, and fails to form words. But the soft noise is enough to draw Rei's attention back to you. "How do you do it? How are you able to keep fighting, even though they're your sisters?"

She turns away from you and continues walking away. "I try not to think about it."

You stare at her retreating back.

James is sitting outside the remains of the base store. He and Sam watch as workers slowly pick it over for bodies and anything salvageable. Sam is in his dress blues, neat and tidy. James is missing the jacket to his, and you find that you don't care. Your silent presence draws their attention shortly after you appear off to the side of where they're sitting.

"Nepgear? What you doing over here kid? Shouldn't you be getting ready for the-" ["What're you doing over here" is what I would use, but what you have works okay, so I leave it up to you.]

"I'm not going." Your silent proclamation is broken with grief. The both of them are surprised until you lift up a soot-covered object in your hand. "I... found this under Richard's bunk. So I thought... instead of going to the funeral and listening to the meaningless platitudes for the fallen..." You don't need to finish. And it's obvious that you need not explain as the two of them stand up.

"Any one else invited?"

You smile.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

Rei Mitsubishi is slumped in the half-melted remains of her once-gaudy throne. Her head is propped up by a hand, her eyes dull. Mind lost to wondering thoughts of which you know not. And, again, you find that you don't care.

This time, instead of waiting for her to notice you, you simply walk up and grab her wrist. Startled from her reverie Rei doesn't resist as you pull her to her feet and drag her after you.

And that is how what remained of Team GEAR and the Goddess Four found themselves a short distance above where they were holding the funeral for the fallen. Perched on a hill, you lean against Rei as the five of you lounge in the grass, a soft breeze stirring the air. None of you have spoken since the procession below you started.

James is the first. "Me and Jess grew up in Kansas. Lived in a small town near some farm but not much else. Most interesting thing there was this huge well. Tended to act as a pit stop for travelers going through. After the Unification Crusade dissolved the world's countries me and Jess got into Highschool. Turned seventeen when the first Demons attacked openly and the Akashic Pillar joined the Unified Light. Graduation day, my town was attacked by some Dark Lord looking to make a quick name for himself before the Second Fall. Jess was at her boyfriend's place when it happened. He and his family got through it fine, but Jess had to kill a demon with a spoon. We both joined up not long after that."

"Joined because I was a glory hound." Michael is swirling what's left of his drink around in it's bottle. "Wanted to join up, kill some demons. Come back hailed as a hero. I was there at Reluxus and Gabriel's Last Stand. A single battalion of angels facing down a horde of demons dense enough to hide the ground beneath their feet. A literal ocean of hellfire and brimstone charging the Gate. I was the last one through actually: I got to watch as a paltry hundred angels stood alone against damn near the entire Fifth Legion. Instead of accepting the discharge after that battle I fought tooth and nail to stay in the Counter Force. Been on mostly shit duties but... It frees up actual soldiers to fight instead of wanna-be washouts like me."

Samael isn't even watching the funeral with the rest of you as he speaks, instead contemplating the sky above you. "Discovered I was a practitioner when a girl at school started making love potions and selling them for cheep. Got the genius idea to buy one and try using it on a teacher that I had a crush on at the time. Brilliant way to find out she was actually a doppelganger hunting for Magical Girls hiding among the student populous. My magic woke up and burned the entire school down to the ground. Started checking out magic books from the library shortly there after, and not much longer before I found my self signing up with the Counter Force to fight the good fight. Got a little awkward when I also found out my girlfriend - the one selling the love potions in the first place - was actually a succubus. We've been thinking of marrying after my time's up."

Rei has already finished her drink, having already tossed her own bottle aside, and is now running her fingers through your hair. "Me and my sisters got it into our heads early on in the war to beat the Unified Darkness. Promised each other we'd be heroes worthy of legends being written about us. That when we were added to the history books we'd all return home to mom's grave and tell her of all the adventures we had. Of all the people we helped, and how much good her little girls did. When Ichi died at Hope, and Ni went off the deep end... San just left. Said she couldn't fight Ni and Ichi. Told me that she'd find a way to get us all back together again... And to not kill either of them until she found it. I promised her but... I haven't seen her since, y'know? I've been trying so hard to convince the both of them to come back to me. To come help me find San so we can just go home... We were like four points on a compass. Nothing could beat us. And now... I just don't know any more."

You stare through your own empty bottle at the funeral. Letting their words wash over you as the soldier below pay their respects. "Dad was in the Counter Force. Engineer for the Seventeenth. Would have been infantry but took a bad blow to his back in college football. He died when the D9-7 sector was overrun. Mom never really recovered from his death, and started taking her grief out on me and sis. Sega tried to protect me from it as much as she could but... she wasn't always there, y'know? I always dreamed that she was out helping people, but it's silly. After she turned seventeen she got a job and moved out, then fought mom in a legal battle for custody over me. After she won, mom killed herself. Moved to another city, but... you all know what happened to it. I survived by dumb luck... straight from the beginning. I would have died when that thing launched my roof across town if it wasn't for the bully tripping me. Made it to the street because it was busy eating my school. Survived long enough to activate my magic because a local magical girl tried standing up to it. Survived long enough for Rei and the Counter Force to save me because it was probably laughing it's ass off from my attempt at shooting it."

You all watch as the funeral slowly comes to an end. You had heard that the Counter Force had taken elements from the old United States, Great Britain, and Russian military funerals. Your not sure how true that was, but you could easily identify bits and pieces of the old American Military influences thanks to old vids you had watched.

"What now?" Your voice cracks. Tears blur your vision but you refuse to wipe them away. "I'm barely strong enough to go up against their Rank and File. Rei can't be there forever... and... I'm so lost. How can we win this?"

Your not sure if it's telling how none of them answer you.

The survivors from your now ruined base are loaded up and moved to a new location. A hastily set up firebase recently christened 'Defense Base Momo' is little more then a handful of pre-fab structures at the moment, and wasn't expected to actually be up and running fully for several weeks. It was to be your new home for the foreseeable future.

A small part of your mind notes that you had never actually learned the name of your last base.

Several minutes after arrival you and what is left of Team GEAR is with Rei as you all report to the acting commander to find out exactly what the last attack was supposed to do. And it's not a pretty picture.

"The attack on New York and the second attack that Goddess Gold intercepted have turned out to be part distraction, and part of a greater scheme. After plotting the two locations on a map we were able to find out that they were using our responses to the two attacks to pinpoint the location of our North-East American base. They then sent Goddess Grey to take it out while our forces were otherwise indisposed in order to hamper our defenses. We have reason to believe that more attacks are incoming across the region. And until this base is fully operational there's shit we can do about it. So be prepared to mobilize at even the hint of a dropping hat. We won't catch everything, but we hope to minimize damage until we can start interception duties again. Understood?"

"Yes Ma'am." You're nervous as hell about going into another fight like New York but you knew it would be inevitable. Funnily enough Rei is the only one in the room that doesn't respond to her. Considering the lack of reaction, this is probably normal.

"Good. Get settled in and keep your guns close. Dismissed."

The room is hastily cleared, and you shuffle out of the tent right behind James. Once out you take a quick look around you and nod to GEAR. A wave from Samael, and they're off to find your new barracks. Rei is already gone, but Carnage gives you a hug before wondering off towards the makeshift airfield to stay near her Dragon.

The sun is sinking slowly. Your fifth day as a magical girl is almost over.

You nod to your self. The thought of loosing any more of your team was something you didn't want to contemplate. As it was, it was only a matter of time before you got strong enough that the stronger forces from the Unified Darkness came gunning for you. And with their standard issue equipment Team GEAR was horribly outclassed. And if nothing changed, they would die.

And you weren't going to stand for that.

But the problem was: how exactly were you going to pull that off? You frown in thought for a moment, crossing your arms and squinting. It was actually a really good question.

The Titanium Plate Armor was standard issue for all Human soldiers for the simple fact that it was the strongest and cheapest protection that the Akashic Pillar could produce. It was leagues ahead of any other faction in terms of durability that didn't somehow involve magic. And thanks to the Elvin Empire giving mining rights to the Pillar resources weren't actually all that scarce. Some Human practitioners could enchant their standard issue armor, but that was on their own budget. There were also a few Magical Girls that could drastically enhance and empower their own teammates, but you didn't have anything like that. Yet or otherwise.

At the moment, Team GEAR had the best standard issue equipment they could get without Samael finding some way to enchant it all with his own magic. Or you for that matter.... Wait.

Standard Issue. Standard.

"There's an idea..."

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

Ten minutes of being lost and confused as you attempted to navigate the mess of tents and mud roads that was Firebase Momo found you at the longest tents of the camp. Apparently, this was where the researchers were piecing together their own setups. Like that affinity chamber thing from a few days ago.

It was also were they stored all their research: magic, demonic, nightmarish, and so on.

You were here for a very specific thing though: Weapon Research. The war between the Unified Darkness and the Unified Light had been going on throughout the Local Dimensional Cluster for nearly eight thousand years. Originally started by the Fairy Home Realms and Dark Star over the Fairies wanting all races to live in harmony and peace, and Dark Star wanting the strong to rule the weak with lots of blood and chaos mixed in. This inevitably led to the two polities declaring war on each other and starting the whole thing off.

Hell heard that shit was going down, and after a bit of poking into the sudden conflict, had joined in on the orgy of destruction with agusto on the side of Dark Star, the idea of ruling everything else just because they had a bigger stick appealing to the rulership at the time. Heaven, being well... Heaven, had leapt in on the side of the Fairies in order to try and keep their nemesis in check. Everything spiraled out of control though when the largest faction at the time joined in on the mess: the Elvin Empire.

With the Elf Legions sweeping onto the battlefield in hilarious numbers the Unified Light had damn near steamrolled the Unified Darkness. Individual Elves were rather weak, their magic subpar, and technology was nothing compared to Heaven, but they fielded armies in the hundreds of thousands. A tide of steel and flesh, an Elven invasion was compared to tidal waves.

But with the seeming inevitable defeat of the Unified Darkness, Hell was contacted by a previously unknown group: the Children of Nightmare. No one's sure what exactly they want but they had joined the Unified Darkness, and fielded... things, that had almost collectively crushed the Unified Light's advance.

The tide's sudden change had almost spelled the end of the Unified Light up until a Demon commander had fucked up.

He got the genius idea to invade Earth that had only recently discovered that yes, magic is a thing, and colonized an unclaimed dimension. The event was known as the Second Fall of Rome to Earth. To the rest of the LDC it was known as the Moment of Fury.

A single battle, and deployment of a single weapon had erased a Demonic Fortress, and an entire Legion from existence. A smoking radioactive crater was all that was left of the Seventh Duke's holdings. So, with the Akashic Pillar's entry into the War the whole thing ground to a stalemate. The Unified Light didn't have the forces to push back the Unified Darkness, but if the Darkness tried to force their way past Earth they'd more than likely leave themselves open to another Nuke up their asses.

The Pillar's scientists were working to find a way to break the stalemate. This lead to research into everything from super-soldiers, to powered armor.

The Super Soldier track had yet to give anything adequate as far as you knew. But then again... your clearance level wasn't all that high. What you were positive about though was that the powered armor track had been giving results. The problem was finding a workable mass-production design that could be handed out. So, Scientist teams would mock up different designs with the potential to be mass-produced, and allowed a few groups of soldiers to take some prototypes and test them out to see their effectiveness.

So... since you wanted to ensure Michael, Samael, and James' survival... why not see if any of the local research teams had any open slots for power armor testing? Which is why you were now standing right inside one of the extra-long tents and staring in confusion as one of the scientists ranted at you for 'interrupting her delicate research with your childish whimsies and why are you here children shouldn't be on military bases or in highly classified locations they could break something and why are you standing there staring get out outoutoutoutout".

Your are nearly catatonic from confusion as the scientists you had been hoping of asking questions of all but physically tossed you out of the tent. As it was, you had a hand half-raised in defense and were flat on your back staring at the sky a you tried to process what just happened. Sadly, you find yourself failing at that.

"Sorry about that. Liz doesn't like anyone trying to interrupt her when she's on a roll." You blink as a new face intrudes into your vision of the sky. "My name is Alexandra. You can call me Alex for short: I was one of the techs that helped you during your Affinity Testing."

"Your survived?" For some reason that's the only thought that actually makes it through the mess of your thoughts. "I thought everyone had died." You unconsciously flinch at that. The feel of Jessica in your arms as she died suddenly there at the small reminder.

It was going to take a while.

Alex smiles softly at you, and reaches down a helping hand. You grip it and she pulls you to your feet, "I was lucky. Me and my team were looking over the Affinity testing room when Goddess Grey attacked. Room got wrecked, but we survived. I heard that Carnage and one of your teammates managed to hold her off long enough to cause her to retreat."

You grin wirily and scratch at the back of your head, "Yeah... It was really impressive. I only showed up at the end of the fight."

"I'll need to get the full story from you at some point. But I'm sure talking about the fight isn't what your here for. What can the science division help you with, Solid Core?"

Thankful for the change in topic, you take a deep breath to brace yourself incase of another rant. "I want to see about signing my team up for power armor testing."

The smile slips from Alex's face at your sentence. "You do realize only certain soldiers are allowed to sign up for powered armor testing? We can't just hand them out willy-nilly you know?"

"I know." You bow your head. "It's just... I almost lost my entire team last night. So... If I can, I want to find a way to make sure they can survive. Ya'know? So I'm here to find out if any of you have any slots open. I don't want to loose anyone else."

The scientist looks at you for a long moment. You know not what goes through her mind, but a part of you knows that this was a very important moment. Something that had to happen.

"Alright. I'll take a look into it and let you know what comes up. Swing around here next week, I'll tell you what I find out."

Your smile is brilliant, "Thank you."

After you finish with Doctor Alexandra, you leave to find your team. Which you succeed at.

What you hadn't expected though was that Rei had decided to commandeer you and your team and have them bunk in her tent. When you tried asking she said, "Large tents get lonely." Which kinda made sense when she led you to a very large tent, where Mike, Sam, and James were setting up their own areas near the entrance, and Rei drug you over to a very large four poster bed and declared you her teddy bear. ["drug" seems weird here. It's not technically wrong, but it seems weird for me and my west-coast dialect.]

You would have objected but you found having her curling up against you with a near-lethal grip a good counter argument.

It took you a while to go to sleep after that.

Images. Fire.

Screaming metal, and a rain of blood coming down around you.

You hold Jessica's mutilated corpse close to you as Richard rests a hand on your shoulder, ignoring the blades impaling his own corpse.

It is not Jessica's alarm clock that awakes you in the morning. Instead it is the sound of Rei humming a sweet tune.

You are struck by grief and comfort in equal measures.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

After you get dressed, you catch up with James just outside Rei's tent as the older magical girl wonders off... somewhere.

You decide not to ask as you get James' attention, "So. What for today?"

The older soldier shrugs at you. "Nothing really. What little training was left for you was nothing more than basic tactics, and you've already shown a decent grasp of those yourself as you are. Not all magical girls are so lucky. Your time will be more or less free so long as your ready to move out in case something comes up. I'll probably be looking for something to do myself. Might visit the memorial later today, but I don't have any real plans. Mike went to the cafeteria already, he's planning on looking into what magical girls are getting moved into the area to help out since Carnage and Truth are down for medical. Sam's looking into magical research. Got any plans?"

You shrug, considering you had thought that today was going to be filled with another round of training, you hadn't made any plans. "Nope. But I'll think of something. I'll see you later James'."

"C'ya kid." And with that he walks off. You turn away and gaze across the already bustling firebase.

All this time and nothing to do with it.

It's not much, but it's a plan. And with it in mind you start your day.

A quick trip to the mess got you some breakfast, though you half wish you hadn't from how it tasted. After that you quickly made your way to the half-raised training ground. And once there...

You realized you had no idea how to train yourself. Up until this point you always had someone else giving you pointers. If not teachers, then your sister, and later your own teammates. The thought of your sister and dead teammates send a pang of grief through you, but you force it down. You were intent on making sure you could prevent something like that from happening again.

And with that in mind you start going over what you had and already knew.

Your Purifier Beam was both a melee and ranged weapon. When you changed into a magical girl, it had come with all the skills required to wield it as a gun, and only few skills to wield it as a blade as it could obviously double as. But you had also rapidly improved on your sword skill in days where it would have taken anyone else decades. So it was obvious you were also meant to know how to wield a blade... but it seemed as if the information that was supposed to be there was missing.

Like half of it was misplaced somewhere else...

But past that you knew that the Beam's Judgement ability allowed you to completely neutralize your opponent's ability to send magic into their defenses when faced with the beam, rendering them vulnerable. It was something that was inherent in the blade itself. In such a way that you were sure you could also extend that same ability to their offense somehow.

Struck with sudden inspiration, you pick up a rock. It was roughly the size of a small ball, but big enough to give a good welt if it hit. After testing the weight for a moment, you toss it straight up into the air as far as you could manage. Once it was airborne you drew back your blade...

"Consider it as an incoming attack..." As it came back down to you, you focus. And with a lunge you attack the rock!

... And miss it completely with the Panzer Blade. Your blade flashes right under it, leaving you wide open for the stupid thing to land heavily right between your eyes.

"Gurhk!" Your head snaps back, your balance runs for the hills, and you find yourself on your back, in the mud, with the top of your head landing first with a thud. You focus enough through the sudden headache to glare at the object of your ire for a moment before the pain gets to you.

Four tries later, and winding up in the mud each time, you finally manage to pull off what you were intending.

The rock went up, came down, and was met mid-air by the Panzer Blade. With a crack, the blade cleaves through the stone with surprising ease. With a laugh of success, you repeat the process with the smaller pieces, now that you had a better idea of what you were doing.

Again and again you do this. Each time it becomes easier to do, though every now and then requires you to find new rocks to practice with. Soon though, you find it almost a easy as breathing, no matter the size of a rock, and eventually find yourself confident enough to use it in a fight. "Though I should test it against a living opponent first. Just in case."

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

After getting a handle on your new possible ability, you make your way over to the medical tents: just to discover that Carnage had already been discharged.

Though surprised, you don't let it deter you and instead scurry your way over to the airfield where you know she'll be.

"Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr-"

The Doppler effect, you find, is a very strange thing. If an object making noise is moving fast enough, it would cause the sound waves in front of the object to compress.

"-rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn-"

This would cause the sounds being emitted by the object to sound weaker, or more distant than it would otherwise be.

"-nnnnnnnnnnnaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-"

And when the object passed, all that compressed sound had a tendency to hit all at once.

"-AAAAGGGGEEEE!!!!!"

Not like it was a very relevant fact to Magical Girl Carnage when you bull rushed your way across the air field screaming at the top of your lungs straight at her into a sprinting tackle that actually picked the poor girl up off the ground, carried her at least seven feet, and plowed her into the ground at speed.

In pain and confused, Carnage didn't have a chance to even gasp more than "Wha-" before her head met pavement and she was out like a light. The event was enough to halt all ground work around the airfield, and even made the White Dragon leap from a laying position into the air.

To you? Your friend was alive, and lacked any serious injury. It was a joyous occasion.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

"What the hell happened to your arm?" Is your poorly described revision not even fifteen minutes later after Carnage awoke from her impromptu flight and subsequent crash landing.

"It was cut off. Remember?"

"No, actually." You realize you didn't. "I was a little more focused on the fact I met God and she didn't feel like smearing me across the ground for the shits and giggles. So yeah. The fact you were missing an arm was kind of lost in the transition."

Carnage opens her mouth to try and refute your 'facts' and turns a slight pink when she realizes she can't. You grin at her as she obviously wants to smack you for a moment. "So. What happened to your arm?"

Sighing, Carnage rubs at the bridge of her nose, "During the fight with Goddess Grey, she severed it at the elbow. Since my regeneration relies on my ability to damage my opponent, healing it back outside of combat is impossible unless I start trying to kill an allied magical girl. And since it'll be fully healed shut by the time the next fight rolls around, I decided to just stick a prosthetic to what stump there was and go from there." She waved her face hand through the air, "so far there's been no problems, even during basic practice with it, so I'm sure it'll be good. So, besides trying to turn me comatose, what other reasons are you here midget?"

"Well... I was wanting to check up on you and see how you were doing. Also, to check and see if you have anything on Truth and how she's doing."

Carnage shrugs and turns away, "Could have fooled me, with the way you tackled me. Anyway, a you can see I'm fine. Missing arm regardless. Truth's regeneration is separate from battle, so she'll recover her legs perfectly fine. It'll take her a day or two though, so she wont be back for a bit. They sent in three new magical girls in the meantime: though I haven't had a chance to meet any of them. I've sent Truth a message telling her about the attack, and what happened so she's not overwhelmed entirely when she finally gets released and returned to us. Said to tell you sorry though."

You blink. "Sorry? Why would she want to tell me that?" It was a bit of surprise. Truth didn't seem like the kind of person to apologize much for anything.

"About the barricades at New York. She wanted to apologize about failing to handle the last one like she promised."

Oh. Oh... Well, that just turned this whole thing awkward.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

After beating a hasty retreat from Carnage before she was able to guilt-trip you into helping her wash her Dragon, you flee to the far side of the base where the surviving magic books were gathered, and where Samael Balier was doing his magical research.

And despite that grand description, what you find is surprisingly lackluster. The magical books that had been salvaged and rendered safe for use from the previous base, measured just enough to fit into a small home-bookshelf. Said bookshelf was sequestered in a corner of the depot filled with kitchenware, and you were positive that everyone had forgotten about it. Save for Sam anyway. He actually used them.

He was also more than likely a little surprised when you showed up out of the blue and asked him if he minded the company.

"I'm curious about magic. I'm hoping that if I can find out how mine works, I might be able to do more with it. Instead of relying on what's there already, and potentially run the risk of running into something that my current abilities can't handle."

What went unspoken was the guarantee that there was very little you could handle as it was, but it was the thought that counted. Yes?

"Alright, it down and lets see what we can find out."

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

Your affinities: Purity, Faith, and Divinity, outlined the shape your magic took. The first was the base, the thing that all future powers would build upon, regardless of intent. The second was the frame with which it would take shape. It was possible to use them in opposite directions, but it would default to this arrangement nine times out of ten. The third described your growth potential.

Growth Affinities were ranked loosely because magic had no limit to how much it could grow. So instead of listing them by caps, they were instead listed by how fast they grew.

Story Makers were the slowest. It took them forever to get to the same level as someone that had the Myth Maker, the next highest, affinity. From there, you had in order: Legend Maker, Story, Myth, Legend, Epic, and finally the recently revealed and highest growth rate: Divine.

Every growth affinity save Divinity grew by chunks. Massive chunks in Epic's case, but chunks none the less. Divinity growth on the other hand, was multiplicative. Meaning that their strength multiplied, instead of growing by chunks. Meaning, that though they started weaker than nearly anyone else, they would begin to outpace literally everyone else rapidly. To the point it was theorized by Human scientists that some of the strongest magical beings in the cosmos, including Cosmos herself, started out as just another Magical Girl, that got lucky on the draw.

No one was exactly sure what Faith did, save for the fact Judgement Core apparently used it to incredible effect, but the independent Magical Girl wouldn't share her secrets. Purity, on the other hand was a lot better understood.

Your purity Affinity rendered your attacks to a sort of 'scale' system: the more you were disgusted by the target of your attack, the more powerful it would be. And the more the target was reviled, the less defense they would have against it. And so on.

Sam's Library affinity though, was a lot less straightforward. It was based on his ability to collect and store knowledge. If he knew enough about a given system of magic, he would be able to perfectly replicated without error or flaw.

Yet, as awesome as this sounds, he had absolutely zero talent for any kind of magic.

"Have you tried a magical girl system?"

Sam's blank look your question prompts answers your question for him. Regardless though, he still replies. "No-one can replicate your magic. Believe me, it's been tried."

"Have you tried it though? I got a feeling you might be able to." Sam sighs, but relents to your persistence.

"Fine. Meet me by the training grounds tomorrow, and we'll see if your idea holds any weight. In the meantime, lets see what we can figure out with your magic here."

And surprisingly enough, you do figure something out.

If the theory holds, you'd be able to over-charge your Purifier Beam with magic, and subsequently use an entirely different ability.

Hopefully. Otherwise your weapon might just blow up in your face.

After a bit of searching you manage to find Rei. And probably in the last place you actually expected her to be: the very training grounds that you had spent your morning at. She was simply standing there, in her Magical Girl outfit as Goddess Gold, frowning in annoyance at the ground as she drove the end of her weapon into it.

"Hey Rei. What wrong?" Your voice seems to startle her from whatever thoughts had been occupying her mind as she looks up at you.

Her annoyed frown twists into an amused grin as you approach, "I was stuck with the base Commander all day going over plans to cover the North East Region until the base is fully operational. I'm not even sure if she listened to me at all during the whole process." She shrugs at the last bit, but turn to you fully, "What about you though? Heard that your training was labeled done; so what have you been up to?"

"Well... I wasn't sure what all I should have done, so I spent part of the morning trying out something new... Visited Carnage to see how she was doing. I just got done doing a bit of magic investigation with Samael though. I think I have a good idea of what Sam's issues with his own magic are, and I think I've got a good idea on another Spell I can use. I'd like to practice first though."

Rei's grin grows a bit at that as she turns to gaze at the 'training grounds'. "Well... they're not quite done demolishing this area for training yet... so why not we have a bit of fun?"

You blink. "Fun?" Rei's smile turns vicious.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

"Hahahahahahahaha! That was great! Throw another one!"

"Alright! Here... I... Go!"

"Chains of the Earth!"

The commotion that you and Rei kick up draws a lot of attention to the rapidly disintegrating area at the edge of the base. And in no time at all, you and Goddess Gold have a small audience to your antics. You would take the largest object you could lift, and toss it into the air, and Rei would subsequently try to smash it out of the air with her Chains.

Every few rounds, the two of you would switch off and she would toss objects into the air where you would try to blast them out of the sky with your new-found Starshine spell.

Exemplified as the large rock you had just tossed is smashed apart by the magical links as they dance through the sky. Bits and pieces of the destroyed rock fall to the ground as Rei laughs again. "Alright, your turn! Shoot it down!" Her Chain twists around a tree, ripping it -roots and all- from the ground and throwing it into the air, where you wait.

"Easy!" You summon your Purifier Beam to hand and take aim, "Starshine!" You are almost giddy in excitement as your magical power erupts from the end of your weapon in a flashing rain of light. Dozens of lasers arc through the air in an intricate pattern, to home in on the flying tree, and to smash it to splinters in less then a second. A few that failed to hit before the tree was obliterated spiral outward across the sky in a brilliant display before fading away.

"Your getting better. Try to keep the attacks wasted from the spell to a minimum. After the initial target is dead, attempt to lead those that didn't hit to another target, get ready!"

Instead of replying, you simply raise the Purifier Beam again, charging another spell as Rei grabs more objects: two trees and a large rock this time, and launches them into the air.

"Starshine!" The rain of energy blasts this time spread out, a hurricane of destructive forces that batter away at the objects in question. You try to focus and maintain control over your spell, but only manage to destroy the rock and a single tree before the remaining shots spin off across the sky, leaving the last tree to fall to the ground in mostly one piece. You audibly huff in annoyance as Rei waves you down from the air.

"Good enough for now. As fun as it is, skeet shooting probably isn't the best way to get ready for a proper fight. It's also getting late, so we'd better call it a night." She turns to the gathered onlookers. "Alright, shows over everyone, time to get going." You smile as Rei waves away the onlookers. A sudden sense of nostalgia hitting you. A memory of your sister doing something similar with several neighborhood kids when she had still been in school, before Dad had died, hit you softly.

You felt the grief of her passing, but at the same time, you couldn't help but feel happy with the reminder.

"Come on pet, time for us to settle in for the night."

"AAAAEEEEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!" Is your less then professional wake up the following morning.

Rei, surprised at being almost thrown out of her bed sits up in surprise, "Whuzza?"

Her voice triggers another bout of panic in your half-awake brain and you promptly flip.

As in: Flip the bed.

Rei is not amused, despite the laughter from the rest of Team GEAR.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

After a rather awkward morning wakeup call, you find yourself standing outside the tent as Rei stalks away with a huff and both James and Samael practically flee so they can laugh without being overheard.

Leaving next to Mike, who is sporting a rather colorful selection of bruising to the side of his head.

"You alright? What happened?"

He raises an eyebrow at you, "Apparently hitting on a Magical Girl that already has a fiancée isn't productive of one's health."

You blink. "Wait. Wouldn't she be..."

"No actually. She's nineteen. Thought I could get lucky, but... yeah."

Yeah, you could tell how well that had gone. And with that bit of conversation, Mike wonder his way across the base... somewhere. Your unsure where, but you have a pretty good idea. Well, Rei was annoyed with you for flipping her bed, James and Sam are off somewhere busting a gut, and a long day to figure out what to do ahead of you.

"I wish I had some of Sega's hot chocolate right now."

With the way things are, you really didn't want Rei to be mad at you. As it was, your sister was dead, and two of your team mates you had only recently become friends with had died right in front of you. So the image of Rei abandoning you over the wake up call of a flipping bed was a rather poignant one. A bit unrealistic, but one you couldn't stomach even for a few hours.

So immediately after watching Michael wander off you turn on your heel and nearly sprint after your 'owner'.

You manage to catch up to Goddess Gold before she walks right into the command tent for the base. Probably to check up on the current status of the war, and to argue tactics with the local commander again. "Um... Rei?" Your voice carries easily in the clear air. She stops before reaching the tent and looks over her shoulder, frowning in your direction.

"Yes?"

You slow to a stop only a few feet from her, several personnel stepping around the both of you, as she also steps away from the door. Gaze dropping, you clench your hands in front of your chest as your nerves almost lock up. "I... Um... I wanted to apologize. About this morning. I-I didn't..."

"Stop." Your mouth freezes at the command. "It's not you specifically I'm annoyed at Nepgear." You hear her boots on the ground as she walks towards you. And just as they enter your sight up look up... just in time for Rei's hand to land on your head.

"Rei?"

"When... you flipped the mattress... well. Just some bad memories. Ni used to flip our beds if we slept in too long when we were all younger." You didn't need much more clarification then that. Any memories attached to her younger sisters would be a sore spot for Rei. As it was, you were stilled awed by her ability to fight in the war despite two of them being on the opposing side. Had Sega fought for the Darkness... You didn't know what you would do. "So don't worry about it. Just give me some time to think, and it'll clear itself up. In the meantime you work on what you need to work on, and leave the heavy thinking to me. Okay pet?"

She runs her hand through your hair before pulling back and leaving you standing there.

Heavy thinking eh? You could work with that.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

You find Carnage, surprisingly, not at the airfield with the White Dragon.

Instead you find her with James over near the administration tent. And the conversation you walk in on would probably sound a lot better in context.

"So how big is it?" Carnage sounds curious.

"Pretty big. Jessica called it 'a little to large to swallow." James' delivers it in a deadpan tone.

"Anything else?"

"Not long enough."

They both turn as you emit a strangled sound. The sudden jarring change from Rei's melancholy to... whatever this was, was more than just a bit jarring. That, and you were very imaginative even though you sometimes wished you weren't.

"What? We were talking about shotguns."

"Gwhsdg." What comes out of you is less language and more some eldritch squawk that could reliably be mistaken for some Lovecraftian language of the Elder Gods. James somehow manages to translate it.

"Wait... If you think about what we were saying as she walked up, it'd sound like-"

He trails off as both he and Carnage gain luminescent blushes. "Subject! Change!"

You bury your face in your hands as you mumble out, "I came to apologize to Carnage for disappearing on her like I did yesterday. I didn't know what to say, and I kind of panicked, so I... fled."

Shaking off her own embarrassment, Carnage walks up, and throws her fake arm over you shoulders, and pulls you into a one-armed hug. "Don't worry about it kid. I thought you might need a bit of distance after that conversation my self, so I didn't think too much on it. Truth was beating herself up over that the whole time she was telling me, so I know how uncomfortable it can get. You'll be able to forgive her yourself once she gets out here. Until then, its best to let her stew and get it out of her system."

"Yeah... Thanks Carnage." You lean into the hug, grateful for the support. You hadn't really considered Truth's promise about the barricades at all after you had charged off to help Carnage at the Gates. So hearing her apology for failing to keep it, had struck a powerful cord of guilt as you realized something else: you hadn't stopped to consider that promise. Instead you had simply charged off without thought of it.

To a girl that held truth to such importance that it had become an Affinity, how cruel would it be to discard a promise so easily?

"Anyway, I was off to talk with Administration about something, when I ran into Carnage here." James draws both of your attention off Truth's promise with another subject change. "We got into a conversation about shotguns when she brought up what regular Humans do when forced into melee without Magical Girl backup and things we could do to minimize our uselessness when it comes to getting in close with our larger and stronger counterparts. I'm pretty good with a sword, but Mike and Sam... aren't."

That was actually a really good point. As it was, even you were next to useless in melee combat. (You studiously ignored the small voice in your head that pointed out you were still next to useless in about everything else as well.) If the three of them took up some kind of Melee weapon, even if it was just a shotgun, it could increase their own survivability until you were strong enough that they wouldn't need to worry about it.

"I'll let you know if I come up with anything."

"Thanks Nepgear." You smile at him as he takes his leave to the administration tent.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

Last but not least, you find your way to the training grounds where you find Samael had more or less relocated the entire magical 'library' to an outdoor-half tent ready and waiting for you. "Hey Nepgear. Been taking a look into what scientists currently know of Magical Girl Magic, but so far not much of use."

He places a book down as you approach, "Really? What do they got?"

"Well. As you know Magical Girls get Three Affinities right? Instead of the usual one or two that everyone gets?"

"Yeah."

"Well. Turns out due to numerous Magical Girl Shows throughout the years, some with their magic being explained better then others, it has led to a pretty straightforward understanding of how Magical Girls get their affinities and how circumstances influence them. For example, Goddess Gold and her sisters awoke their powers when their mother was killed in front of them. Now, due to the way mythical lore has portrayed magic throughout human history sacrifice is a BIG THING. This forced their magic to take on what is nearly the pinnacle of Affinities in their respective fields. Goddess Gold's Affinities are all based around the Rights of the King. Their right to Rule or have something destroyed. You could almost call her the King of the End. Goddess Red on the other hand has Affinities based around what are known as the Rights of Creation. The unholy hell that all life spawned from in the form of the primordial earth. So she can easily be considered the King of the Beginning.

"Goddess Grey's Affinities are based around the Rights of Civilization. The unforgiving forge of which Man built his kingdoms and separated himself from the beasts. The tools that legends are made of. She could be called the King of History, or something like that. Goddess White's Affinities are built on the Rights of the Wild. The inevitable march of Time, and the power to influence the world in all of it's wonders. King of the Primordial would be a good descriptor if you would. All Magical Girl Affinities are granted and grow along these lines.

"Now. If what you said yesterday is true, my power is to record these Affinities and then later use them myself for special effects. So, today I want to see if I can record your affinities, and if so, how to do so." You blink from the sudden info dump. But in a way it kinda made sense.

Not long ago, you remember Rei telling you how the four of them had seemed like points on a compass. This simply confirmed it. "So, you want me to transform... and then what?"

"Well... First I'll try to record your abilities myself using the only spell I got. After that we'll have to get creative. Staring with you shooting me."

"WHAT?" That last part didn't sound too healthy, and the last thing you wanted to do was shoot Samael.

"Trust me. It won't be too bad."

You grimace... but in the end it had been your idea. Too late to back out now. "Kneel in the Darkness, and Burn in the Light. Magical Girl: SOLID CORE!"

A flash of Light, and you stand before Samael in your magical armor, wings ablaze behind you. With a nod you take off and hover several feet away from him, as he pulls a single hand to his forehead, and concentrates.

"Libras!"

(Libras: 20 Base Damage, +5 Dice = 25 Damage
Solid Core: 45 Base Resilience, No Dice = 45 Damage Reduction

A small blue orb flies from his hand, and spears across the distance in a flash. A golden barrier appears across your body, barely a hairs breadth from your skin and blocks it: but you feel something latch on and pull. Five more orbs, this time the color of your magic, leap from you and race back to Sam, sinking into his skin and he stumbles from surprise.

"That's never happened befo-" He cuts off as a look of realization dawns across his face. "Holy shit. You were right."

He turns to the ide and raises the same hand he had just used, and shouts, "Purge!" A barely-focused flash of power, and a tree suddenly bursts into flames. "It works!" His exuberance in almost comical. And you find yourself sympathetic. Samael had gone years dabbling in his magic and not once finding anything that had worked for him. Due to his 'Library' affinity none of the 'standard' magical schools had worked for him... and now, now he knew what his power could do.

You couldn't fault him for his child-like exuberance in the face of that.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

He manages to get two more spells from you and later Carnage after you had ran off to get her own help and explained the situation to her. The older girl had happily donated after learning of the situation.

But you had managed to convince Samael to keep his Libras to enemies unless he had his allies' permission to use it on them rather easily. It was a pretty happy event all around after the rest of Team GEAR learned of it themselves.

The day was nearing it's end but you find yourself with a bit more time on hand.

(Samael Learned Purge!

Samael is practically jabbering in excitement to anyone who would listen when you part ways with him. The man was more excited then you had ever seen him, and you couldn't help but feel happy for him yourself. You could remember how happy you had been when Sega had taken you from your childhood home to your new home town. It wasn't the same... but it was similar enough you could almost understand his own happiness.

A happiness that grew a bit tiresome after fifteen minutes.

Which is how you found yourself wondering around the base in the growing twilight of the day, watching as the base personnel wrapped up their daily activities for nighttime. The whole thing carried with it a kind of peacefulness that was hard to describe. A sense of duty, and a job well done permeated the air of the make-shift camp.

Supply officers joked with one another as they locked up what they could. Surviving Pilots hazed the replacements that had been sent in with the new helicopters. Grunts teased rookies and looked at you with gratefulness. Many of them specifically would have been consigned to death if not for your own actions at New York, and they knew it.

You weren't used to it yet, but you also knew that it wouldn't be long before more soldiers started to look towards you with hope. It was a daunting thought.

"Walking the base?" The young voice shakes you from your thoughts. In surprise you turn around and come face to face with a girl that was around your own age. She stood roughly two inches taller than you, and had blond hair and blue eyes. A white dress flowed down to her knees, with a pair of simple shoes, and a blue headband. "I don't see many other girls my age at military bases these days. Most that get stationed on Earth are either older than me, or hide in their barracks until they get a deployment order... Oh! My name is Ada Castle. Nice to meet you."

She leans forward and thrusts her hand out with a large grin on her face. Drawn in by her enthusiasm, you can't help but smile at her as well. You take her hand in your own and give it a firm shake.

"It's a pleasure to meet you! My name is Anastasia Boheart." 'For what it's worth I think it' a brilliantly adorable name!' You give an almost imperceptible flinch at the flash of memory. Ada though, catches it, and your smile turns melancholy. "But... Everyone calls me Nepgear these days..." The image of Richard's grinning face imposes itself on your mind. His look of cheerful amusement comes with a poignant sense of regret as you realize you had never forgiven him for his attempts to cheer you up after the death of your previous life. Regardless of how annoying you found the nickname.

"I sense a story there... but I won't ask." Ada is able to read your mood easily. Noticing the pain the nickname came with now she sidesteps the issue and barrels on to a new topic. "So. When did you get relocated here? I only heard what happened to the last NE-NA base after they loaded me up in a helicopter with my stuff."

Grateful for the subject change you latch onto it, "Actually, I was stationed at the previous base here before it was destroyed. I was coming back from the New York Attack when the base was hit."

She grimaces at that, "Ouch. I didn't think that you'd have been stationed here. Is it true though? That Goddess Grey was the one that wiped out the base?"

You nod an affirmative. It wasn't like it was classified knowledge, or any real secret. "Yeah. She left before she finished killing everyone because Goddess Gold was on her way back to the base herself, and I don't think she wanted to force a confrontation just yet."

"That's bad. If one of the Goddesses lead the attack, then it means the destruction of that base was important for something."

You can't help but smile at the worried look on her face. "Then I guess that means we just have to work hard to make sure whatever it is doesn't work out, right?"

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

"Ahhh, come on, Nepgear. Do it for me, pleaaase?" It wasn't a simple request, but she did ask for it from time to time.

"Come on, sis, it's too embarrassing to do it out in the open!" Now that they were older, the younger sister was self-conscious when doing it.

"It's not as bad as you make it out to be. Besides, I hardly ask you to do it anymore." They only had each other, so in a way, this was important to the elder sibling.

"...Do I really have to?" She was really reluctant to doing this in public.

"Tell ya what: You do this for me and I promise to leave off on the nickname for a while." The older one sighed while smiling.

"Your promise? You swear that you'll do it!?" The younger one's eyes were full of desperation while her hands were balled into fists.

"Of course, of course! I wouldn't break a promise to ya, would I?" Whenever she promised to do something, the elder sister made certain to stick to it, especially ones involving her sibling.

"Alright, here goes..!" The younger was filled with resolution and gathered up her courage to do something that was both embarrassing and kinda stupid, but stilled filled with the love that bonded the both of them.

Anticipation filled in the older one's chest as her sibling was about to do one of the younger sisters' least favorite things to do but would always warm the requestor's heart.

Finally, out loud and in a singsong voice, her name was spoken:

"Seeeeee~gaaaaaaaaa~~!" The name of her sister, Sega, reverberated out at the top of Nepgear's lungs.

Half a dozen people looked rather strangely at the tall girl, and she did feel embarrassment from the looks by the onlookers, but in her eyes? The payoff for doing this stunt would be worth it. Sega smiled immensely as she gave a big, warm embrace to her younger sister.

"I love you, Sis." Nepgear said while her eyes were closed as she embraced her sister back.

"Love ya too, Anastasia. Love ya too." Was the only thing Sega said back.

Your sight is blurry as you stare at the roof of Rei's tent. Your quiet sobs a soft background noise to the slowly waking base outside though the rest of Team GEAR with Goddess Gold still sleep. The memory of your dream refuses to fade with the waking of the mind and you feel the grief of the last few days bear down on you like the weight of Atlas' burden.

"God... dammit... Sega." You cry quietly to yourself as the night melts away.

Why does it hurt so much?

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

"Goddess Gold, ma'am. The Lieutenant requires the presence of Team GEAR in the command tent."

Thoughts of your sister are pushed to wayside as a soldier runs up to your ragtag group to deliver his message. Rei looks at him in surprise, as does the rest of your team. You had subconsciously known that this would happen... but so soon after New York?

"Tell him we're on our way." It takes a moment, and the look of surprise on Rei's face for you to realize that you had been the one to speak. A blush creeps up your cheeks as the silence stretches. "Um... sorry?"

"Oh. My. God! You are so cute when you take command like that!" Rei literally throws herself at you in her sudden eagerness to give you a hug. Your squawk is audible as she impacts and carries you to the ground to snuggle you like you were some kind of puppy.

"Gah!! Help! She's... smothering me!" With her arms wrapped almost completely around your head you find yourself almost unable to breathe as she reels you in.

It takes you almost fifteen minutes to make the normally four minute trip to the command tent, and when you arrive your hair is an incredible mess and your face is locked in a shell shocked state while Rei carries your limp form in her arms.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

The base commander is older than you. By a lot.

His form is massive. Almost seven feet tall, he towers over your ragtag group like a giant, huge muscled arms crossed before him, and deep green eyes peer out from underneath his grey hair as if trying to define if you were joking with him or not.

The fact Rei was sporting a smile that held absolutely zero remorse didn't help matters at all as you remained in a limp daze.

"I'm not going to ask." James and Michael are burying their faces in their hands from shame, while Samael watches from his position like he was seeing a comedy act live. The Lieutenant simply rolls his eyes. "We got word of strange activity around a graveyard. We're not certain what they would want from it, but due to reports of similar activity around other grave yards Regional Command wants us to investigate. We need to find out what's going on, and if it's the Unified Darkness, we need to shut it down, whatever the reason. But since it's not a confirmed attack, we're only going to be sending out only a small group to investigate. Magical Girl White Knight, Magical Girl Solid Core, and her team will be the ones getting deployed. Goddess Gold and Blue Sky will remain on standby just in case..."

Your daze fades through the briefing, but you find yourself unwilling to have Rei put you down. So, instead you take the opportunity to take a quick gaze around you as subtly as you can manage. Rei is still grinning as if from some joke only she knew, while James, Mike, and Sam were all paying close attention. And just to the side stood a young woman alongside Ada: she stood slightly shorter than you, but held herself in a way that made her feel larger than she was.

Blond like the girl next to her, the most obvious difference besides the height would have to be the blazing green eyes that seemed to glow with an inner fire.

You blink, breaking the spell and draw your attention back to the Lieutenant. She must have been White Knight.

"We want to do this quietly, so you won't be able to expect much backup or long range support. We'll see about handing out earpieces that'll allow you to contact command if necessary but it'll be on a case by case basis. Any questions?"

James raises his hand first, drawing the room's attention, "How large is the graveyard? And how important is it?"

The Lieutenant nods at the question, "It's not very large. A single central mausoleum surrounded by about seven hundred graves. It's where we buried the dead from the previous Base, a well as a portion of civilians from a town that was recently destroyed."

You flinch. Rei glances at you, but Team GEAR's notice are a lot more significant.

The only town that had been 'recently destroyed' had been your own. Meaning... "Sega..." your voice is small, but, draws the attention of the rest of the room. You had not gone to your sister's funeral. Burying yourself instead in your new role as a Magical Girl, you had not been able to bring yourself to face your sister's death. Now, you were going to the very graveyard that she had more than likely been buried at.

James' hand lands on your shoulder and you twist to look at him. "Don't worry kid. If there's time after the mission we can take a quick stop at her grave so you can visit her."

He doesn't need to elaborate, and the dawning comprehension from the rest of the room tells you they know what he's talking about.

"Your..." Ada doesn't finish her sentence.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

The flight to the graveyard is a quiet affair. You lean into Michael as the sound of the engine washes over you and your team.

At some point White Knight had changed into her Magical Girl form and stood next to the door instead of sitting. From her position, she watches your fragmented team as you lose yourself to your thoughts.

"Hey Kid." Her voice draw your collective attention. "The Graveyard is small, but if we split up, we might be able to cover more space faster."

The suggestion is straight, and to the point. And while layered in logic you know what she's offering.

(Unlocked Character Sheet! Magical Girl Blue Sky (Level 0)
Unlocked Character Sheet! Magical Girl White Knight (Level 1))

For a moment, it's tempting... but...

You shake your head, "No. We have a job to do, and it's better to just get it done. So lets get it over with." White Knight looks at you for a moment before grinning and returning a nod.

"Alright. I can respect that. We'll sweep over the cemetery in a clock wise fashion. Keep close to one another, and if you have to choose between loosing sight of each other or scrunching up, crunch up. Don't split up or lose sight of one another, alright?"

You nod with the rest of Team GEAR as they check their equipment and you pull on your power to transform into your Magical Girl outfit. Once the glow of your transformation fades, you share a glance with Michael.

"Who wants to bet we'll run into zombies on this?"

"Sucker bet." Is the unanimous response to the question.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

The transport helicopter lands in the middle of the main approach to the cemetery, disgorging it's passengers before taking off again, and vanishing into the bright afternoon sky with the steady drone of it's rotors. James stands close to you as Michael and Samael both drift slightly off to the side. White Knight takes the lead as the five of you make your way into the graveyard on foot.

The trees rustle softly in the quiet wind, and the song of birds filter through like music. Otherwise, the silence is almost stifling.

"I've never been to a Cemetery before." Your whisper to James is barely audible. A part of you balks at the thought of talking any louder in the soft silence for fear of breaking it and somehow disrespecting the dead in the graves around you. "What if we don't find anything here?"

"Then we visit your sister's grave. Check to see if they moved Jessica and Richard here after the funeral. Probably pay our respects before leaving. I'd rather whatever was happening around the graveyards is something simple but we're not that lucky."

Considering your first day as a magical girl, and the following days you didn't bother arguing with him. The thought of someone disrespecting Sega's grave filled you with a kind of cold rage that scared you. Thankfully whoever was responsible for this was more likely after military graves then civilian.

Necromancy as a magical school was rare and didn't tend to have many practitioners, on either the Unified Light or Unified Darkness' sides. This was because of how difficult and complicated it was, as well as the fact one of the Unaligned Factions had a rather brutal response to any large-scale necromantic efforts. A neophyte Necromancer was just as likely, if not more, to kill themselves with a spell as they were to succeed in whatever they had set out to do. Even if it was simply attempting to resurrect a dead rat.

Necromancy was one of five schools of magic that didn't require any kind of affinity for one to use. Or even actual magic in the case of some humans. It simply required a very good understanding of base biological functions, and a willingness to use one's own soul to fuel the magic. If a Necromancer botched a spell, they ran the risk of having their soul sucked out through... something, and pureed. Violently.

Thankfully since it didn't recall the victim body's soul from the afterlife in order to pull off, it didn't have the same stigma among the Unified Light as one would expect. True Resurrection on the other hand was an entirely different matter and a lot more complicated.

A matter you didn't feel like distracting yourself with.

"White Knight, I got something over here." Michael's voice drew you out of your thoughts and brought the attention of the group over to the soldier. He stood before a recently dug up grave, dirt thrown willy-nilly across the immediate area, with it's gravestone knocked over and clearly missing coffin. "Seems like we have grave diggers."

"No shit Sherlock. We're in a graveyard. What else would people be doing here if not digging up graves?"

Michael raises an eyebrow at Samael before responding, "A Dark Magical Girl might just get remorseful or something, and come looking for dead family to visit." Samael looks at Mike with annoyance as you try to choke down a giggle before it can escape. Instead you make some kind of sound that was a mix between a drowned rat and a strangled snake. White Knight instead simply covers her mouth with a delicate hand and giggles quietly to herself. "Anyway, I don't see why they would be interested in a dead teenager, or why they'd go out of their way to dig her up and steal her body."

You blink, turning almost in unison with the rest of the group to the over-turned grave marker. Stone face gazing up into the sky you read the inscriptions out loud, trying to figure out why someone would dig this poor person up.

"Alexandria Soft
January 1st, 1995 to December 31st, 2012
A loving daughter and close friend.
'May nothing stand before you in the next life, my juggernaut.'"

The strange epitaph sticks out in your mind, as you mentally go over any significant people you knew of that could match that age. "Who do you think she was?" Your voice jolts the group back to reality. They all trade looks as you contemplate the headstone in silence. Part of you can't help but feel that the epitaph on the stone is incredibly important.

Sadly though the universe doesn't want to give you enough time to contemplate this. You also find out that expecting Zombies does jack shit for you when they actually do show up.

The team is so distracted by the grave that no one caught the thing running up to you until it leaps on Michael in one great lunge. Limbs elongated to inhuman proportions it clears the ten feet with incredible ease. Though emaciated, with loose skin hanging from bones and seemingly no muscles to speak of, it carries the hardened soldier to the ground, and wrestles him for a moment before it's jaws open impossibly wide, and it lurches forward.

Michael, with desperate strength, somehow manages to force it's attack off just enough, so instead of latching onto his face the beast's jaws latch onto the side of his neck.

A spurt of blood and a scream, the thing's jaws latch onto Mike's neck like a vice clamp. It growls and rears back, tearing a chunk of flesh away. The whole attack takes less than two seconds. You react on instinctual panic. A twist of your ankle, and you bring the Purifier Beam to bear like a club, swinging for all you were worth at Michael's cry.

It catches the beast mid-dodge across the face, stunning it. Bone caves in, and it stumbles aside in a sudden daze. White Knight, also reacting on instinct, takes the opening and throws her sword.

(White Blade: 1,500 Base Damage, +366 Dice, -1,125 Not a Throwing Weapon = 741 Total Damage
Assault Zombie: 15 Base Resilience, no dice, -25 Took a Panzer to the Face = 5 Extra Damage

746 Total End Damage

The White Blade was never meant to be a throwing weapon. It's beautiful elegance was meant to allow it's wielder to dominate a blade fight. Not act as the impromptu missile that White Knight used it as. But regardless, her magically enhanced strength threw the blade with enough force, that the hilt of the weapon completely obliterated the head and a good chunk of the zombie's torso on impact. It even retained enough force behind it to plow through one of the more ornate stone grave markers that had rested behind the creature as well, and embed itself in the ground behind it.

If the arrival of the helicopter earlier hadn't alerted everything inside the cemetery to your presence earlier, the resounding boom of the headstone's obliteration did.

The difference was: now everything knew where you were.

"Oops?" Knight's strangled apology was drowned out by what sounded like a hundred bestial roars ascending into the once quiet air all at once. Birds took startled flight, and the ground writhed as more of the zombies scrambled into motion.

Michael scrambled to his feet, hand clamped over his wound as he lifted his gun, "Fucking zombies! Of fucking course. This is the second time I got bit by one of the fuckers! Be careful, these thing's claws can tear through armor and love to latch on! I watched them swamp a squad once and tear them to pieces." Well, wasn't that a pleasant thought? You knew from hitting it with your Panzer Blade these things wouldn't go down to your Purifier Beam all that well, and you were leery at the thought of firing off your Celestial Severance due to the way they traveled across the ground. You couldn't be sure you'd even hit any of them if you used it.

"We're too exposed out here. We need to head to the mausoleum if we don't want to get swamped as soon as they reach us."

White Knight grabs her sword and rips it from the ground. "Agreed. We can't stay here, lock and load! We're running for it."

She flourishes her blade, Michael adjusts his grip on his gun, James racks the chamber, Samael takes aim, and you steady the Purifier Beam. The zombies cross more than a dozen yards in the few seconds you plan your attack, calling their hunger to the air. "Go!" White Knight kicks off, and the ground beneath her greaves shatters. Team GEAR breaks and sprints after her, but as fast as the four of you sprint, she is far faster.

A hair's breadth and White Knight hits the line of zombies like a meteor.

She is less then a blur to you. Three strikes arc through the air in such perfect form that it almost resembles a flourish... and three zombies are diced to pieces between eye blinks. Each strike delivered with precision you had only ever seen from Goddess Grey or Red Rose. She flicks her blade, putrid blood splashing across the ground as it slides from her blade, almost as if it was repulsed to have even touched such a thing. It's gleaming light untarnished.

You and team GEAR sprint past her as the horde of zombies change course to try and stop your escape. But it's of no use as the hole was made too suddenly, and you passed too quickly. White Knight takes up the rear of the group as you all hurry to the mausoleum in the center of the Cemetery.

You barely make it to the door when two zombies outright tackle you to the ground.

"Gah!" Your shout draws attention, but its too late as the two zombies pile atop you. But their jaws are stopped by your golden barrier, unable to break through.

"Nepgear!" The rest of the zombies are closing. Fast. If you didn't find a way to get up-

"Purge!" Samael's voice has a primal tinge to it as you feel his magic answer.

The spell washes over you, and you feel when the things atop you burst into flames. Their screams quickly turn to whimpers as James runs up and drag you to your feet. "Come on kid, now's not the time to be laying on the ground!" You scramble to get your feet under you as he half-drag you to the doors of the crypt, just as White Knight kicks them open and you all almost tumble in.

Right out of pan and into the incinerator.

A handful of figures stand in front of you, partially blocking the sight of a small portal of which a pair of Demonic Soldiers are lifting a coffin through, while eight more soldiers stand next to a pile of four more.

But what dominates the scene are instead two creatures of which you had never seen before: their bodies seemingly made of a dark purple rock, emanating a malevolent violet light. They stand individually fifteen feet tall a piece, and emanated power on an impressive scale. (And considering you personally knew Goddess Gold, that said a lot.)["two creatures of which"?]

But overshadowing even their dark presence stood quite possibly the worst individual you could have ever personally met.

Goddess Red. The Mother of Monsters. The fourth strongest Magical Girl in existence and second strongest fighter for the Unified Darkness. She was considered the Apocalypse Incarnate and the only 'mortal' force in the universe capable of personally de-populating an entire dimension.

Death held no bar over her, and only one of the other Goddesses posed a true threat to her.

"Hm?" Her voice is shockingly young. Almost like what one would expect from a under-classman at school. Not a living force of nature. "Oh." She turns to your group, and fear locks you in place.

Dead. Dead dead dead deadeadeadeaddeaddead-

Your mind nearly breaks from her gaze resting on you. The entire world seems to tremble around you as your vision funnels down to a single point.

"That explains all the ruckus." She speaks as if talking to someone about what she was planning to do for supper. Sliding through the gravity of the situation like butter. "Well. Good thing we're done here... but I'd feel bad if I didn't leave a parting gift."

The Demonic Soldiers pick up the last of the coffins, but one pair carry their burden to rest in front of Goddess Red without a word.

"Desires of The Impure World."

A wave of power so great that you nearly fall to your knees from the weight of it. Team GEAR, being purely normal humans are unable to resist, and do so in your stead. A crack, and the lid of the coffin falls off, revealing a horrifyingly familiar sight.

A young girl climbs from the inside of the coffin, bare skin of her back filling your tunneled vision, and she kneels in front of Goddess Red.

"Not much of you was left when they buried you... but enough. I need you to take care of this little problem, would you?"

The girl looks up and smiles at the older woman. "I'd love to! You won't need to worry mother!" And with that she spins to her feet, and Goddess Red turns to the portal and walks away, the Necromancers floating into it ahead of her.

"I'll leave my Knight to help you. Stay safe." And as she steps through, a black figure bursts from her back in a wave of dark smoke, moving to stand next to the resurrected girl.

"Understood! Now, time to transform!" Light spills from her hand, and as it arcs around her she speaks words that nearly tear your heart from your chest, "Candy wrappers and cane canes! I am Magical Girl Candy Heart!"

The Purifier Beam nearly drops from your limp fingers as her transformation finishes and you gaze upon the young girl that had tried to save you on day one.

The roar of the zombies outside break the trance on Team GEAR and White Knight, but you feel as if your entire nervous system was frozen.

Weapons are drawn, the group's human members turn to the door, while White Knight sticks her arm out in front of you, blade bare.

The Black Knight draws her own sword, and Candy Heart summons her heart-tipped wand.

Your skin feels cold. But you know you can't avoid the fight.

It happens fast, and without warning.

"Team GEAR! Hit the radio! White, try to stop up the Black Knight!" Your team springs into motion with determination. White goes straight for Black, and James has the Radio on and is shouting into it before he's even fully turned around.

Your own feet leave the ground in almost the same instant, and Candy Heart is rushing right at you.

"Countdown start! Core Purge!" The sound of breaking glass fill the air, and you feel your armor literally disintegrate. Something inside of you rushes out of the metaphysical gap it leaves, and the world is suddenly...

Light.

Your inner energies flood out like a tidal wave. A wall of sparkling power that washes over everything and fills a good portion of the mausoleum. That infinite something spreads through the air, searching for something else, but fails to find it...

But in that failure it succeeds in something else.

The first zombies through the door cease to exist. As they enter the light, they turn to dust, and that dust then fades into nothing. The Black Knight noticeably flinches as it is hit in turn, and Candy Heart doesn't even have a chance to scream.

The instant before she disintegrates into a cloud of dust and blood you can see her mouth open, her face twist in pain, and fear fill her eyes... and then she' gone again. The girl that had tried her best to save you when your town was destroyed is so much dust on the wind as her blood rains down around you.

But the fight doesn't stop there. The Black Knight's eyes are locked dead on to you, registering you as a significant threat. And instead of going for White Knight like you were sure it would, it instead changes direction and goes straight for you. It crosses the distance in moments, and you rear back, trying to get away because you know you don't stand a chance against it...

Then White Knight is between the two of you and swinging desperately!

The Black Knight swings it's own sword, and steel shatters. The White Blade barely even slows the Black Blade down. Fragments of enchanted metal fill the air as the false knight's attack sweep in and nearly cleaves White Knight in half. Blood fountains through the air, mixing with Candy Heart's. White Knight's eyes are wide as she falls, staring blankly as her blood paints the world red.

Then the Black Knight is past her and face to face with you, Black Blade singing through the air. You raise your own Panzer Blade but you know that you've fucked up.

CORE BREACH!)

Your Panzer Blade doesn't even slow it down. Metal rends, and half of it is flying away as the seemingly unstoppable blade goes right through the rest of you like your made of paper. Blood and dust flies from the titanic wound, as you are literally cut in half lengthwise.

You feel no pain... and the incredible light that your Core Purge had revealed floods from the wound... and you know no more.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

The light that suddenly envelopes the Cemetery where Team GEAR and White Knight were deployed is unstoppable.

A wall of force sweeps out barely centimeters from it's advance as both tree and stone are wiped from existence. The helicopter that had been on station to extract them should anything go wrong is enveloped as well without warning, meeting the same fate.

The second Helicopter carrying Goddess Gold and Blue Sky barely have enough time to realize something had happened before the wave of light is upon them.

"Oblivion!" Rei cuts the name of the attack short to fire it off faster, a mad attempt to stem the destruction heading right at them. Light meets Light, and the world almost shits itself. Everything shatters, and the helicopter is almost knocked out of the sky instantly.

The raw turbulence caused by the clash though knocks Bly Sky screaming into the air, as the Light washes over her, taking her as well. Seemingly to take forever the battle of will against destruction ends in mere seconds, leaving the devastation free to view.

And as far as the eye can see... Rei sees nothing but the glass crater and blasted land. "Nep-?"

(Character Sheet Updated: Goddess Red)

"White Knight, Take care of Black, GEAR! Zombies and backup!"

You move and the stalemate breaks. Your wings flare, and you skim backwards along the ground as Candy Heart rushes you. She's fast. Not nearly as fast as White Knight, not even remotely, but she's faster than any normal Human. She's faster than the demons you've fought before...

But she's not a fast as you. You skim backwards between Michael and James, flowing out the broken doors and up into the air, while Candy Heart chases you. Several Assault Zombies leap at you, but fail to latch on, while the rest flood through the doorway in a stream that breaks around Candy Heart as she chases you outside.

"Candy Heart! Please!" You shout is unheeded as the young girl that had tried saving, turns her efforts to your doom. She leaps up at you, swinging her wand like it's a club and you grit your teeth, and force down the grief.

You bring the Purifier Beam around.

The attack takes her square in the chest. You can hear her scream as flesh cooks and her armor burns away. The physical momentum your attack imparts on her is enough to toss her into the ground with a crash. As she lays there, stunned, you find yourself staring at what the destruction of her armor reveals: a red pattern of lines that seem to twist before your sight.

"What..."

"Neapgear!" James' shout draws your attention back to the mausoleum, where the zombies are charging recklessly into Team GEAR's guns:

The guns of Team GEAR roar a deafening symphony of defiance at death, and the wave of zombies answer.

None that enter through the doorway survive. Ripped to shreds, mere flesh and bone animated by necromantic magic does nothing against the steel and fury that fills the entrance. But more and more come pouring towards the killing fields, and you know that the tide of zombies would break through eventually. Team GEAR was merely three people, and they would need to reload eventually.

"Don't ignore me!" Candy Heart's voice though reminds you of priorities. "Candy Crush!" You spin and try to dive aside, but the magic doesn't let you. Sweets fill the air around you, blocking off all escape, before rushing you in one wave with more force then they should have been capable of.

"Gah!" You swing an arm over your face, and the candy slams into you. But instead of pain, it is met with a flash of golden light, and you feel none. "Huh?" You lower your arm, and watch as a lollipop falls away to the ground. Candy Heart stares up at you in surprise herself, the fact you had just no-sold her strongest attack, causing her to lock up in confusion.

You recover first.

"I'm sorry!" This time, the Purifier Beam punches through flesh and bone, as well as armor. "GaaaaaaaAAAAAHHHHH!" Your scream of grief pierces the air, as Candy Heart's chest implodes, her blood cooking away as the light torches what remains. Her body falls to the ground lifeless. Your vision turns red as her blood and you scream.

Rage and grief mix in equal measures in your mind as you gaze upon her lifeless eyes. A sound and your sight turns upon the zombies still funneling towards the mausoleum where the last of your friends try to hold them off. "I won't let you!" The Purifier Beam swings around, but in your grief you fail to notice the change.

Instead of the bright, brilliant Light that emanated from your gathering magic when you were training with Rei, instead a darker light roared around you. Power came forth and you cried your grief out. "Just die! Starshine!"

Assault Zombie(x40): 100 - 2,715 = -2,615 Health Remaining)

Your power comes down as if the sky itself dropped. In the haze of pain and grief, you somehow keep enough presence of mind to direct each bolt of energy that your attack spews out at individual targets. If one isn't enough, then you send another, and another, until the creature dies. A swath of zombies die en masse, wiped from the field in a single brilliant moment of light as the sound of fireworks flying through the air fill your ears.

Then the Golden Annihilator descends. You do not catch her arrival, but her presence is impossible to miss.

As she strides across the graveyard's field Zombies simply cease to exist in her presence. Burning away and turning to ash through simple proximity. Insurmountable, the blasts from your attack wash over her without effect. The unmatchable King of the End erases all before her with nothing more than a simple stride. Unhurried, she walks to you, and as you descend from the sky, Team GEAR rushes from the mausoleum with White Knight quickly behind.

While the base humans of your group are relatively unharmed, White Knight sports a brutal gash across her chest, armor rent and blood flowing. And right behind them, strides the Black Knight. Completely unharmed by whatever altercation took place within the building. Halfway to where Team GEAR comes to a stop between you, Rei, and the Knight, a new player enters the field.

Clad in Blue armor, and wielding a gun larger than she herself is, Ada Castle is a veritable walking fortress. And you can feel her power from where you stand.

"White Knight! I'll cover you!"

"Got it!" And with that, she raised her blade. A slight spin above her head, and it erupts into light. Blinding in it's intensity you can feel the world almost tilt under it's weight. "Go to hell, you son of a bitch! V.I.C.T.O.R.Y.!" And as she brings the blade down, the light's intensity multiplies.

A wave of total oblivion washes out across the ground, and rock and stone vanish beneath it.

And to meet it, the Black Knight rises.

And fails. The wave of light washes over the Black Knight and sweeps it, the mausoleum behind it, and at least half the cemetery, away in a single glorious moment. And as the light fades, and the dust settles, the Black Knight is gone. White Knight falls to the ground, exhausted.

"Is she going to be okay?" You watch as Michael and Samael help load White Knight' unconscious civilian form into the helicopter. The shirt she had been wearing beneath it was a lost cause, but the bandages preserve her modesty. "That wound..."

"She'll be fine. I've seen Kathy come back from worse wounds than that. Albeit, I've never seen her take on a fragment of one of the Goddesses' power, but..." Ada places an armored hand on the top of your head. "I'm positive she'll be fine. So don't worry."

You nod, and he walks over to Helicopter to hop on and escort it to where the wounded were staying. Once Michael and Samael were off, and it was away you turn... and nearly run right into Rei, who was standing right next to you during the exchange with a raised eyebrow.

"Oh? So my head pats aren't enough for my little pet?" You blush and stammer denials as she laughs and leads you away to the second chopper.

The trip back to Momo is thankfully short, but still embarrassing with Rei's ribbing over the head pats. Once you had landed, you fled, shouting how Rei's head pats were better then everyone else's and would they please stop bringing it up? This had the drawback of announcing the head pats thing to the whole base but you were too distracted to care.

Normally, this would have been where you split from your team to spend some free time for yourself on any number of things. Instead, you were intercepted by a welcome and familiar face.

"Hey Neppy!"

"Truth! Welcome back!"

The older girl finds you outside of the meal tent, dressed in casual track clothes, and lugging a large bag over her shoulder. "Thanks for the welcome. I can see that we're somewhere new, so what all did I miss? What happened to the other Base?"

A brief hug interrupts her tirade and you smile at her as you answer, grateful for her return. "You missed a lot. The other base was attacked after New York was hit while Rei was away. All the tents are supposed to only be temporary until they can get more permanent structures up and running. Rei kidnapped me and Team GEAR to sleep in her tent until they do." What you don't state is your suspicions that she's keeping you with her even after they get enough buildings up and running anyway.

Truth nods and frowns in thought, "Sounds like I missed a lot... Well. Can't help it, I'm going to go find out where they're storing me, and probably go check on Liz. You keep out of trouble, hear?" You nod and she walks away.

The sun isn't down yet, and Rei probably already gave the report for the Graveyard battle. You have a bit of time before the sun goes down...

Half the stuff you quoted doesn't have any red in it.
Every single one has at least one correction. I'm quoting these a post at a time, not paragraph by paragraph. You won't necessarily see the red without expanding the quote.
Juggernaut Core is still independent IIRC. She's at least still alive and fighting the Unified Darkness. Hopefully we can get a chance to meet her soon.
Judgement Core is independent. Juggernaut Core has yet to show up even in passing.
