Lucky: "Not unless they're transformed, and only as long as they remain transformed. Magical Girls don't actually circulate their magic throughout their bodies like normal practitioners do. So while they're 'civilian' mode, their powers are hovering beneath the surface, beneath where most magical parasites can get to."
*Everyone discussing getting Faeries to live longer* *Thinks on what Crystal said Lucky's grandmother did to her sister when she died* ... You know, I'm fine with it as is.
Lucky: "Not really. Family of the deceased actually have first right to their Death Crystals. Though it is possible to have them donated to other groups before your death. There's this big legal process involved."
Humans have only been a part of the community for a few years. Any possible halfbreed would be no older than seven years and thus too young to be a Magical Girl.

Lucky: "I... am not really the best to answer your first and third questions. The former because I don't really follow that stuff, and the latter because they joined so long ago. As for our government system, it's a kind of assembly of clans with dedicated government offices with specific duties that are voted for by the assembly."
Are there any magical systems that are similar to the one in the Warhammer universe(i.e: there is a world of energy that is moulded and given form by sentient creatures. You can draw on the power of this immaterial universe to fuel your spells, but the inhabitants of that immaterial dimension can affect you, and if you mess a spell up badly enough either manifest in the world through you, or pull you into their world, amount at many other possible effects).

Not range, for getting too far away means there is no escape, no room to dodge.
This is the truth Irene faces as the Destroyer advances. The grin on Goddess Gold's face is almost bloodthirsty, backlit by the overwhelming wave of red power. So she moves. White Soul moves faster than she ever has before, faster than she had ever thought it possible for her to move before. It's amazing what you discover in the face of absolute oblivion as it bears down on you.
Everywhere The Annihilator swings that thing she calls a sword, swaths are simply erased from the world. Waves of destructive light that have Irene desperately moving from point to point.
The conclusion of the fight is inevitable though. White Soul had never been one for endurance. Never one to get back up and keep going even when there was no hope left. Fast as she is, as untouchable as she has made herself, she is still bound by her own limitations.
Her battle against that indestructible thing calling itself a magical girl has already taken it's bloody toll from her. A battle in which so much as getting clipped would have spelled death, forcing her to expend even more energy then she normally would have in making sure she didn't. Entering into the battle with Goddess Gold already on her last legs is little more than a final shout of defiance at the inevitable.
She makes a mistake.
A clone dodge brings her too close to her foe. The result of a desperate dodge from a wide-angle blast being too shallow. The Annihilator, so used to fighting the Blacksmith who is even faster reacts instantly and without thought. Reflex, the downfall of the Immortal.
Goddess Gold's free hand lances out in a straight jab that hits harder than a truck on the freeway. White Soul feels her body almost collapse around the blow, even as her feet are torn from the shattering ground. Her vision goes white, though oddly enough there is no pain...
Rock rushes to meet her.

The explosion in size for Ataraxia is... hard to describe.
Momo had been little more than exactly what it had said on the tin. A relatively 'small' base with tack-ons from the other factions of the Unified Light. Now, it's closer to a small city. The Fairy section is a spiraling pillar of light that stretches into the sky. The Angel section is a shining 'town'. The Elf section is literally turning itself into a city with its own districts. Thankfully, one of the human construction teams had the helpful idea of installing what amounted to a tram system throughout the slowly intertwining 'base'.
It is these newly installed tram lines that you use to scour Ataraxia for your first quarry.
San Mitsubishi, at some point in the last day or so, squirreled herself away in the Fairy districts of Ataraxia. The young woman stands on a solitary balcony that overlooks a group of Fairy mages as they perform a ritual that you don't recognize. She is in neither her Magical Girl form, nor in the burial shroud you last saw her in. Instead, she wears a tight pair of blue jeans you recognize from Rei's stock of clothing, and a light pink blouse that you don't.
"Um, San? Are you okay?"
San's eyes and cheeks are red, a sure sign of crying that you recognize from the first days after your town was destroyed. She spares you a glance over her shoulder before refocusing her gaze on the fairies below. "I'm about as well as I can be... Just... thinking about things, ya'know?"
You come up beside her, hopping up to sit on the balcony's banister as a glow picks up below. "Want to talk about it?"
A soft glow fills the room, and San remains silent. It's not an awkward silence, as if you had asked a question she didn't want asked. Instead it's more a contemplative one, as if she is debating the merits of filling you in.
The moment passes.
"I was thinking of Matilda and Natalie."
You raise a questioning brow. (Lots of practice with your sister to pull that one off.)
San chuckles. "You know them better as the Maidens of the Apocalypse. They..." She shakes her head, and runs a hand through her hair. "After Hope, everything was shit. I... never put all that much stock in the whole hero thing, ya'know? I didn't care about beating the bad guys, or saving lives. I was always more concerned with the living. With the children left behind by dead parents, more than the demons that killed them."
She looks down into the room with the fairies, where circles of magic are slowly rising from the floor in the middle of the congregation.
"Ichi always wanted to save everyone, so she kept pushing herself further than the rest of us. Rei... was always a blood knight. Looking for the next big fight to participate in. And Ni only wanted to kill demons. I was the one always focused on the aftermath. But after Hope... I just couldn't any more. What was the point of it all? The fights would never end. So... I ran. I gave up trying to put a stop to it all, and instead started looking for a way out."
She turns away from the light, wrapping her arms around her torso to stave off a phantom chill.
"You met Shiva. And they offered an escape," you guess quietly.
San looks at you for a moment... then nods. "The simplest way to end a war is to just eliminate all sides of the conflict. And Sil promised they'd help me do that if I help him with their grudge against Gaia. I... actually believed them, ya'know?"
You push off the banister, taking the three steps to close the distance and wrap your arms around her from behind, resting your head against the back of her shoulder. "For what it's worth... I think you tried to make the best of what you had." You close your eyes and tighten your grip for a second, then release and step past her.
"But..." Hands cross behind your back, you twist just far enough to grin at her, "I don't think the present matters all that much. We can't really do anything to change our lot in life. So... instead we should be asking ourselves what the future would think of us, looking back." You turn around and smile at her fully. "Will they remember San Mitsubishi? The woman that broke beneath grief and tried to end the world... or will they remember Goddess White. The kindest Magical Girl to ever live?"
San looks at you as you leave the balcony. A contemplative look. "What do you want to be remembered as?" In Memior - The White 1/2 Complete

"SEGA! I WILL WRECK YOU!" are the words to greet you upon finding your sister and the Judgement duo.
Rev holds up a large two-by-four like it is nothing more than an aluminum bat, taking swings at Sega as she giggles gleefully, running in circles to dodge said swings. Off to the side, Uni is rubbing her hands across her face, the picture of embarrassment. You quickly scurry up next to her. "Do I want to know what happened?"
Uni peeks between her fingers at the sound of your voice, "You just missed your sister groping Rev in front of the entire construction crew while they were on break." The sound of wood meeting flesh finally echoes through the air as Rev's weapon finally finds the back of Sega's head. "Isn't there supposed to be some kind of rule against doing stuff like that?"
You shrug as Rev drops her weapon, shaking her hands. "I... think so? But Sega's never really been one for following the rules. And they're nineteen anyway. No harm."
Sega is now rolling across the ground with Rev chasing her. Probably because of her thick head.
"Anyway, so was Sega right? Alex is back?"
You nod. "Yeah. Turns out Goddess Red's been going around resurrecting Magical Girls using her brainwashing thing, and we managed to recover the entire Old Guard as well as Alex. Still processing that."
Uni nods. "I'm not surprised. I was a big fan of Lunar Radiance when they were still alive. You follow ToHO at all?"
"I was on the list of potential moderators actually. Before all this started happening."
"Ah. Kirby Quest?"
"Kirby Quest."
Uni shudders. "I think everyone got at least one infraction from that. I was banned for a month. Completely missed the Cupcake Star."
You giggle. "Actually, I think Saint was the only one not to get caught up in that madness. Probably why they're the Supreme Admin instead of someone else."
"Well, it's kind of in their screen name: Saint. And I think the only reason they didn't join in on it was because they don't even like Kirby... and the Thong Cannon, but that's me."
"My infraction was actually because of the Thong Cannon."
A beat. "Oh my god. That was YOUR IDEA?!"

It takes a bit before Uni finally lets you disengage and flee from the remembered horrors of Kirby Quest.
It's only afterwards that you realize you completely forgot to bring up how you and Sega survived getting hit by Alex. You multiple times.
"Aw well. Missed opportunities."
From there you begin to comb the base for one last person for the day.
She's surprisingly easy to find, though you immediately regret doing so considering the location.
The remains of Truth's 'outing' have long since been cleaned up, though the ground is stilled stained in places by spilled orange juice and bits and pieces of never-eaten food. There's even a few fragments of plastic from the destroyed tables that have likely been thrown out by now.
"Um... White Knight?"
"Kathrine."
"Huh?"
The older... girl (woman?) looks up from the dirt. Her hair is a mess, as if she hasn't cleaned up at all from... what happened. Though you can understand, considering it's only been three days.
... Has it really only been that long?
"My name. It's Kathrine. My friends tend to call me Kat... I heard about what you did. The news is already spreading."
You scratch at the back of your head. "It's... I can't bring myself to stand by. I... don't think Arise would appreciate it if I just... withered. So... I've got to keep moving. Otherwise..." Your hand drops, and you shake your head. What are you supposed to say? Truth died, and you're up and assaulting enemy positions within a couple of days?
"... You're a stronger person than I am." Kat heaves a sigh, and places her hands on her hips. "It's a sign, isn't it? That everything is ending soon... We won't have any room for regrets..." You remain silent as Kat walks towards you, her step heavy as she glares at the ground. "I'm going to be leaving Mo- ... Ataraxia, soon. I've got something I need to take care of... when I do... would you be willing to help?"
You look up as she stops next to you. Neither of you look at the other.
You nod. "If I can. Sure. I'll help."
A hand lands on your shoulder with a light grip. "Thanks, Anastasia. And... for what it's worth, I don't think Arise would blame you. For what happened." With her piece said, Kathrine departs, leaving you alone with the echoes of Arise's final moments playing through your head.
The rumble of countless demons shook the ground where team GEAR stood. In the air a thousand curses hung in tangled knots, waiting to snare anyone that dared fly. Above the curses enough demonic monstrosities flew to turn the sky black. And every few seconds the honor guard of a Duke of Hell sounded their horns. All this effort turned to isolate Solid Core and Team GEAR from support.
"You'll see," drawled Michael. "This isn't nearly as bad as the time Goddess Red was staring us down."
"They've made the fatal error of allowing us a few moments to think. Balier! Solid Core! You ready?" James spoke.
"Right!" Solid Core responded, then let a Pure tone loose from her mouth. Everything seemed to still with it's sound.
"Hey, Aquila. I bet you a date that we kill all of them and go home without anybody dying." Michael interrupted.
"You should face your death with a solemn heart, not comport yourself like... like an untrained dog!" Aquila responded, red-faced.
The Duke's entourage sounded their horns once more. A dramatic moment might have Samael unleash his magic right as the horns were blown, if their was ever a movie made of this event the director would certainly do so. But the sound had faded by the time he acted upon an unseen symbol.
Pure Shell!
Solid Core and Samael Bailer shouted in unison. From their senses an entire realm's worth of magic flowed over them, guarding and guiding their allies.
Things moved very quickly after that. Solid Core snapped to her full speed slamming into the thousand curses and breaking every one of them in an instant. Lucky released a spell of her own, wind obliterating a quarter of the flying demons at once. James leaps towards the Duke, seeming to float in the air as he crosses the half-mile in a single bound, Gabriel flying right behind him.
"See. What did I say?" Michael asks a shocked Aquila. He throws a pebble at the stunned horde surrounding them, it glows with power upon leaving his hand and melts the unfortunate demons near it's path. "We're going to kill all of them. Let's get going before James gets them all."
"Rude," muttered Machine Code, not taking her eyes off the small stack of devices she was watching.
"I'm happy you actually wrote something object-oriented for us. It's a step up from your custom machine code for unique chips, and actually allows for some decompiling. But your source code... well, you've got method 't' in class 'b' that increments int 'sc' in class 'q' which is accessed by a small army of classes and methods which don't seem to do anything else. They don't return anything or send any commands." Amy sighed, "and for all that it's still better than when you submitted drone code in binary lambda calculus."
"The methods do something. When the registers hit certain values it triggers some actions and inputs through purpose-built components."
Amy twitched imperceptibly. "You should refactor. use descriptive names instead of single characters, use booleans instead of letting some random regi-"
"It's not random, I know where it all goes."
"What if it overflows?"
"That's intentional, there are some implicit loops that I control that way."
"Why." Amy took a breath, "Doing that misses the point of this exercise. It's supposed to let me examine the code without having to know the circuit diagram down to the transistor level."
"That's no fun. Besides, I can do a lot more per clock cycle this way."
"Well, this was pointless on my end." Amy put the laptop back, perched precariously on a humming server rack.
You don't know why she has done so, you don't understand why she is. In the recesses of your mind, jumbled ideas on why are formed. Is she doing it for someone she loves? Is the Unified Darkness holding her family hostage? Was she killed and brought back, like you had been.
Immaterial. Your consciousness can't make anything out, everything is hazy, surprise, sadness, hate, your thoughts can only analyse what's going on.
But your body... your body reacts. Moving forward, engaging the enemy in front of you. Still human.
She see's you, and steps back, mouth opening, ready to transform. Everything is slow, moving as if through molassess.
Your fist lashes out, catching her in the jaw. Her head twists. You hear her neck snap. You don't know if she's still alive.
You don't care.
Your sister begins to scream. The shouting begins.
"Slaughter and Mayhem! I will dance in an ocean of your blood! I am Magical Girl Carnage!"
"Listen to the three wise monkeys, for they know the way! I am Magical Girl Truth!"
"Dance to the lights of my Summer Court! I am Magical Girl Summer Queen!"
"Sing to the instruments of my Winter Court! I am Magical Girl Winter Queen!"
"All it takes is a single clue, and I have you all figured out! For I am Magical Girl Insight!"
"Through me, the sky falls upon you! I am Magical Girl Blue Sky!"[/URL]
"Kneel in the Darkness, and Burn in the Light! I am Magical Girl, SOLID CORE!"
A storm of colors floods the clearly, and the waves of power from the various transformations clash until yours overwhelms the others in a burst of Light. As the spots in your vision clears you see Blue Sky racing forwards, clearly trying to take advantage of everyone's temporarily blindness, to strike down Truth. Luckily you're fast on the draw and your Purifier Beam is up and firing just before she reaches Truth.
The beam that blasts forth from your weapon isn't the man-sized beam you remember from your earlier testing but something closer in size to Sega's pickup truck. Blue Sky had already built up too much momentum to even think about dodging, she could only hope to try and ride out the damage, so the pink titan slammed into her dead center. It was now that you saw just how much your Purifier Beam had changed since you last used it; for instead of the blast being absorbed by Blue Sky's armor/skin or blowing right through her it instead exploded sending you and everyone else flying.
Thinking quickly you focus your magic to harden the air behind you, providing you a solid platform to launch yourself forwards and upwards. Closing on the blast zone in fractions of a second you quickly begin searching for where Blue Sky might have been blown but the smoke and dust is reducing visibility to zero. The problem is swiftly taken out of your hands as a dozen lances of blue light slam into you.
You feel a sharp pain in your right leg as the beams impact it but the pain is easily ignored in favor of returning fire, using the faint trail the beams left as a guide. Once again the beam your Purifier Beam unleashes as you pull the trigger is closer to pickup truck sized then human sized and blows through the smoke and dust only to create even more as it detonates once more against some unseen target.
You jet around the artificial clouds searching for any trace of Blue Sky but find nothing. No trace of her, no further attacks, just nothing. Even as the smoke and dust begin to clear there is still not sign of Blue Sky. In the end you, and your fellow Magical Girls, spend an hour scouring the base but find no sign of Blue Sky.

"Instead of grabbing some ice-cream and sulking back to your bunk, why not join a little get-together? You could introduce yourself to some Magical Girls, maybe start getting a few friends." She finished with a bit of triumph.
I nearly said no anyway, but wasn't that something I was trying to get away from? She might have some form of prediction power. She was an ally against the darkness, I shouldn't hate her just for possessing an ability.
Inhale, they're friendly. Exhale, it's not a trap -- I can zip out of any trap in moments.
"I'll stick around." I give a brief nod to the blond girl.
"Great!" She gave a wide smile, "I'm Shirley, what's your name?"
"Anna. Summit is also acceptable." I had the distinct impression that she could pick out any knowledge she wanted.
"I see," Shirley's face went briefly blank before returning to a cheerful grin. "Help me carry some chairs, we'll get everything set up quicker if we work together. And don't worry about snacks, we already sent somebody out to grab a bunch."
My share of the fold-out chairs was annoyingly heavy without aid from my Panoply. I was tempted to transform, but having that itch of knowing I was next to a Magical Girl while only sensing one of their affinities was maddening. Best to avoid it if possible, just focus on normal things.
Mercifully the event was only a few hundred feet from the small concession stand. I popped out the chairs to wait for the table and took in the area.
It was the flattest spot between the camp and the training grounds. Brush had been cleared away in all directions and the sky was unobstructed all around. A girl carrying a folding table was approaching from the camp. Annoyingly some of the paths swerved around buildings, limiting sightlines. Two other presumably magical girls were present, one lounging on a patio chair, the other crouching on the ground with a box tucked under her arm.
"You're high-strung, did you know that." Shirley waved her hand slightly when I turned to look at her. "Why don't you introduce yourself while we're waiting for the table to get here."
I faced the pair that were also waiting. "Hello, I am Anna. You may also know me as Magical Girl Summit."
"I'm Titania," spoke the one carrying the box. "Mab," said the other, pushing her sunglasses up as she spoke.
"Wait… Summit. You're the one that got chopped in half fighting an armored angel." Mab lets her sunglasses fall back on her face as she points. Is this what I am to be known for? My lapse of judgement, a brief period when I mistook how powerful something was? I could feel a blush creeping up my face. "That's hardcore! You must be super tough to have survived that."
Oh.
That's not so bad, I guess.
Shirley pats me on the back, I jump at the unexpected contact.
"It's her. In the somehow still-whole flesh. It was drowned out by Solid Core and Judgment Core, but the teleporting, indestructible girl has shown herself." She declares. "Err, didn't mean to startle you."
"It's fine, I just prefer to be transformed so I can see things." I reassure her.
Where is everything
I spun in place. The girl carrying the table was White Knight in her unpowered state. Now that she was closer I recognized her from my visit to the infirmary. From one of the twisty paths an untransformed Carnage was accompanied by three other girls. I only knew one of them.
Her
My heart felt like it had suddenly quadrupled in weight. I'd seen how Solid Core had stood in the midst of a vortex of hostile magic unmoved. She could withstand the force of indignant Divinity. Her very touch had empowered Gabriel enough to hand me a humiliating defeat. I couldn't win against her.
"I need to go." I bolted towards the camp, but was stopped by Shirley's grip on my sweatshirt.
"No you don't" She said firmly. "You can run off once you've introduced yourself. No one is going to fight here."
I try to pull out of her grip, but can't displace her. The panicked sensation ebbs as I focus on the ground.
"Aww, she's weak as a kitten." Mab interjected. "Are you going to make her your pet?"
"I haven't decided yet." The amount of smug in Shirley's voice was tangible.
"Who's the stray?" Asked one of the approaching girls.
"You missed her grand intro, she's Anna. You've heard about how she kept fighting after being cut in half, right?" Shirley repeated Mab's impression of me
"I only had my arm cut off, it was hardly debilitating." I added.
Carnage gave a thumbs-up at me.
...Was that what I was going to say? Something felt odd about that.
I was startled out of my introspection by a loud clang. I was prevented from jumping very far this time due to Shirley's grip. The table, it was White Knight setting up the table.
I put my attention back to Solid Core's group.
"Is this a special occasion? Some holiday I didn't hear about?" The blond girl in said group asked.
"Nah. Were just gathered around to meet with friends, isn't that enough of a reason for you to celebrate?"
"You're not my friends. I'm just playing along until I have the chance to kill all of you."
FIGHT
Everything comes together in a snap. Magical Girl Truth must be nearby. I lunge forward, hand moving to grab my knife. A quick slash before she transforms and I'll be able to seize the initiative.
I slam face first into the ground, Shirley lands on me immediately afterwards, forcing the air from my lungs. She was still holding on to my hood.
"You have any idea how easy it is to forget about your stupid little aura?" The girl from before asked with a steady voice.
Everyone else seemed to be more than a bit stunned. I tried to take a breath. Perhaps they weren't going to fight? I could seem to muster up the air to speak. Was that why Shirley hadn't let me attack?
I didn't know. I twisted in place, solar plexus screaming at the motion, and got myself loose from Shirley. My heart was pounding fast, between it and my gasping breaths I couldn't focus on what was being said.
Instead I watched how they moved. Everyone was shifting to encircle the enemy, as well as put some room between them and her. No one was transforming. My twitching to try and keep everything in view was drawing some attention towards me.
With effort I drew in enough air to let me speak.
"FromThePeaksIWatch! IAmMagicalGirlSummit!"
From nowhere my Panoply arrives, green glow over a shifting dark mass. A power flowed through me, washing away my aches and making the weight of the world vanish. Most comforting was the widening of my view to see all around me.
Whether by coincidence or reaction almost every other girl started transforming at nearly the same time. Solid Core was looking forward with a blank look on her face, and White Knight had a dismayed expression near the table she had set up.
Transformed, I had a better understanding of who was who. Blue Sky was the turncoat, Truth had been leading Solid Core's group, and Mab and Titania were the Summer and Winter Queens respectively.
!!!
I had to keep Blue Sky on the ground, her massive armor would be nearly untouchable once airborne. Wings, propellers, jets, and esoteric magical limbs flow out of my Panoply. I launch myself above the group.
I am scarcely afloat before everyone springs into action. Spells collide sending dust everywhere. I spot a vortex, Blue Sky is charging Truth. As the thought arrives so do I, Shifting myself to intercept. My arm is already in motion to meet the attack, armor plates, bones, and rocks appearing over it to deflect the attack into the ground.
Splitting my Panoply I strike with three parts while I duck past her. Blue Sky bats away two of the parts, but misses the third. When she tries to charge past me I use Elsewhere to force her to crash into the ground.
For all of that it's only a delaying action. I haven't put a mark on her. A spell streaks past Blue Sky, the warped space throwing off its caster's aim.
"Fine! I'll just kill you then!" Blue Sky screamed, a worryingly large pair of guns fixing themselves on me.
I had to keep her on the ground. I ignored the shots tearing into me and warped space to force to the ground. Hit after hit registered, but I seized hold of her undaunted.
"Kneel in the darkness, and burn in the light! I am Magical Girl Solid core!"
I strained to hold Blue Sky. I had my Panoply gripping the ground and pushing the guns away. My thrusters scream to counter hers while I twisted reality to frustrate what little force she had the advantage in. I needed someone to finish this fast.
"Solid Core! Shoot her! Shoot her before-" I was interrupted by a massive fist tearing free from my grip and grabbing my head.
I had to abandon my grip to focus my Panoply to stop Blue Sky from crushing my head. Once free she resumed firing upon my helpless form. The blows and crushing force seemed to soften somehow. I resolved to stay slightly longer and delay her plans. A kick from me knocked a thruster out of alignment, pausing her slightly.
The world exploded in light. Blue Sky cracked under the onslaught of Purity and Divinity. As did I.
How high up had I gotten? I couldn't recall falling. My vision had gone strange and I could only see Solid Core, approaching me with a guilty look.
"It doesn't hurt." I tried to reassure her.
It all felt inevitable, like there was no way that I could have avoid the danger she represented.
"I feel so light." I let out my last breath.
The world exploded in light. Blue Sky cracked under the onslaught of Purity and Divinity. As did I.
Had I fallen? There was something wrong with my sight, I could only see Solid Core. She shined like a sun. My strength, what little remained, seemed to flow out of me.
Then Insight appeared, interposing herself between Solid Core and myself.
"You're too stubborn to die! Hold on!" She turned away, growing less distinct against Solid Core's glow. "You need to stop what you did!"
"I didn't-."
"De-transform Now! You're killing her!"
"Insight, I think she's already dying. Just look at her."
"#$%@!"
I couldn't quite grasp what was happening. The haze in my mind grew, covering the pains of battle.
?
At once everything came into focus. The glare that was Solid Core winked out, and I could see once again through my Panolpy's eyes. And feel the pain once more. All of the pain I had ignored fell upon me at once, I screamed.
My scream cut off as a sensation of electricity washed over me. I convulsed, regretting every motion that sent another wave of agony over me.
"See, she's going to live. I bet her affinities are stubbornness and protection." Insight sounded quite relieved.
Opposite of Insight Magical Girl Truth was also by my side. She was holding one of my hands in hers. "Thanks for the save, I hope the pick-me-up makes us even."
Further away White Knight was still un-transformed, staring blankly at where Blue Sky had fell. Winter Queen was standing next to her, speaking quietly to White Knight. Summer Queen stood several feet away from them looking uncomfortable. Nearby I was flanked by Truth and Insight, the de-transformed Solid Core stood a few feet distant, staring blankly at me.
I tried to ask something, but Insight moved her hand over my ruined face. "Just stay put, alright? Summer Queen! Get a couple of medics and a stretcher for Anna!"
Summer Queen glanced over to Insight, nodded, and started running to the training grounds.
"Why?" Solid Core murmured.
Insight let out a sigh, "I'm not certain, but Summit used her stubborn soul to hold herself together after Blue Sky nearly shot her to pieces. Something about your attack was drawing out her soul -- which made her less alive, and let your effect pull on her soul more. That's why she was glowing your color and starting to fall apart."
"Oh."
"You did good. Everyone's going to be alright. Just be careful when you swing that weapon around."
A shout from Liz draws your attention to the most adorable of the new Magical Girls, Nepgear. She seems hesitant at first, but agrees to come along when Liz asks.
It's always fun to see if you can get someone to let slip something during one of your get-togethers. Bringing the firepower of Solid Core along should help in the unlikely situation that you do trip up a traitor. You mentally congratulate Liz as you take another draw on your drink.
Anastasia has a few questions, you answer with your habitual candour. She's nice enough to let the unasked questions your response raises stay unasked.
Her hesitation before seems to have vanished, she gives one of her winning smiles at a stray girl. Ada was quick enough to accept. Another person to bring along, which should be a welcome surprise for White Knight, at the very least. You remember them being friendly. An idle thought passes your mind on if you could get the two of them to kiss or something.
There's a bit of small talk before Nepgear starts talking about her team. Apparently she managed to pipe up during one of Commander Mason's meetings, and it grew from that. The joy of being super important, being surrounded by power-armored badasses.
Reaching your destination, you get to see that White Knight and Insight are putting things together. Right on time, you drop your burden of snacks on the just set-up table and start trying to think up leading questions. You sip a bit more of your drink to get your mind moving.
Ada gives a good line to work from, you jump on it.
Oh my. That subtle ring on your magic. Someone just tried to lie in front of you. Specifically, Ada just revealed an ulterior motive for all of her actions.
A solemn air descends upon the eight of you. It's with no small amount of glee that you drain the last of your drink to dispel it. Ada's going to surrender or get cut in half by White Knight momentarily, there's a good chance this is the last chance to enjoy your drink.
A bit of taunting from you reveals that she's going to go down fighting. That's fine with you, there's no issue when it's you explaining perfectly justifiable bloodshed.
You draw upon your powers, as does everyone else. The combined energies send dust everywhere. You back-pedal to make some space between yourself and Blue Sky's last location.
Like an oncoming train Blue Sky rushes towards you. Your sword barely moves her as she slams into you. Numbness spreads over you from your spine breaking and you feel your magic tensing up to try and revitalize you.
Oh.
That's right, White Knight is Blue Sky's comrade. Neither she or Solid Core have transformed yet. The light-headedness from your cracked skull is tempered by the sudden weight of your imminent death.
The ground spins as it recedes at an alarming rate. This was a major fuckup, wasn't it. Blue Sky is about to kill you, then she's going to zoom over to Commander Mason and kill him. At least you finished your drink first.
When you hear Solid Core declare herself you start wondering how long Blue Sky is going to haul your paralyzed self along. There's a cry of pure rage from Solid Core, followed by a beam of pure rage from Solid Core. When it passes over Blue Sky it explodes.
You're still thankfully numb as you spin through the air. The way you're spinning suggests that there is a lot less of you than there was a minute ago. The dizziness doesn't increase either.
Heh, Solid Core knocked Blue Sky out in one shot. Just like her bouts with Judgment Core.
She's there. Her face contorted with dismay. She shouldn't feel like that, she saved a bunch of people from your mistake. She should have one of her cute smiles.
You'd like to see one of her cute smiles.
The bit of energy within you comes unsprung and light engulfs you in it's stead.
The sensation of trying to reach inside yourself felt like you had crawled and twisted down a hole to suspend yourself by your toes. Except the feeling wasn't of imminent falling, but that your 'curled-up' state would snap back to looking outwards.
You try to call out, but the part of you that looks inward can't make itself heard over the nothing. Surging your soul against the pressure of the core you try again.
[NEED]
Everything nearly comes undone, a pain spikes from above yourself. You grit your metaphorical teeth and will yourself to focus inward.
It worked, you think, heart rising. Truth, no, Arise is there, nearly close enough to touch. Her eyes are closed and her face is set in a serene expression. She floats within the Core, a loose dress billowing in inconsistent ways. Slightly behind Arise a girl who can only be Candy Heart drifts, dress and expression identical.
Without a way to speak, and fearing what conceptual language might do, you try to push a part of yourself to touch Arise.
There's no reaction. You can't seem to bring your soul into the core in any sense, it pushes you like a balloon is pushed by it's contents. And Arise hasn't reacted in the slightest, she can't sense you at all.
The bit of hope within you turns sour. You can see her, tantalizingly close, but not interact with Arise at all. And even if you could interact, what would you do? She was dead, whether you held her soul or not.
You abandon your introspection, perspective snapping back to Earth. A huge headache makes itself known as the rest of the world comes into focus.
Useless... why can't you just make people happy? Why can't you make yourself happy?
A few battalions that were far better equipped than expected holding the line just long enough for the Humans behind them to regroup and prepare a counterattack. A few squads that somehow were in just the right position to bunker down and fight against Demonic forces far more nunerous and powerful thanks to the terrain. A counteroffensive that was organized just a bit faster and was much more effective than they had expected.
Then came the Graveyard operation, where she interrupted Goddess Red's plans and defeated the fallen Goddess' puppet without casualties, coming back to base with key intel on their plans. Intel which she used herself after the incident on those laboratories.
The Dark General had scoffed when he read through the reports. They believed Solid Core and her team had stumbled upon their secret Nightmare Nest and the commander of the operation took the opportunity to catch them off guard, capture them and make a few powerful Nightmares out of the deal. He, in his extensive knowledge of tactics and warfare, saw her ploy for what it was.
She already KNEW the Nightmare Nest was there, like she knew Goddess Red had gotten her sister's corpse and revived her. And why wouldn't she? Solid Drive was far too powerful not to and Goddess Red's spell would ensure she followed their orders. But Solid Core knew that. She knew the Nest was there and presented the commander with an 'opportunity' far too tempting to turn down.
She had baited them, and she got back to her base with a sister, a Goddess and no casualties while their long term plans to harass and weaken the Counter Force were crippled and they lost a powerful asset.
The other generals were skeptic of his theory, and even he had his doubts about how much of Solid Core's success was the fruit of careful planning and how much was due to luck, but her command of the defense of the Messenger platforms was what convinced him.
Magical Girl Solid Core was a tactical genius with knowledge and experience beyond her years.
The General sneered at the image his Scrying screens showed him. "Damn you, Solid Core, but it doesn't matter!" He had planned for this, of course. Solid Core and others of her level couldn't be everywhere at the same time. He hadn't expected her to destroy his troops that fast, but he could work with this. "We still have our Babylon Golems and the Hell Titans to crush their armies and fortifications! Our army will advance under them for protection, create as much havoc over as widespread an area as possible."
His orders were given, but instead of transmitting them to their troops his liutenants shuffled their feet and look away from him. He was a second away from grabbing one of the lesser demons and making an example of him when one of them managed to find the courage to speak.
"Uh, sir... you may want to look at the other Scrying screen." He narrowed his eyes, but didn't kill the whelp. It was hetting harder and harder to find liutenants with a spine in them. Sometimes literally.
With a lazy gesture, he made another Scrying Screen float to him. His six eyes widened when he saw the enormous craters where he had his troops waiting for his order to advace, and they almost popped out of his skull when he saw other meteors falling from the sky.
"WHAT?! HOW IS THIS POSSSIBLE?!" He didn't even try to contain the scream of anger and frustration. "A single Meteor can't possibly have killed all our superheavy creatures! And I made sure there weren't enough spellcasters grouped together to cast a spell of that magnitude!"
A glimmer of pink catched his eye, and the Dark General quickly zoomed in on it.
It was a fairy. A fairy in armor surrounded by pink light, high-fiving a equally armored and glowing human while dozens of spellcasters of all races cheered behind them.
"How is this possible?" The Dark General was so stunned he didn't scream or rage. His mind was too busy trying to understand how this had happened. "There's no way the Akashic Pillar managed to gather that many practitioners in one place during the battle..." He frowned in frustration as his great intellect gave him the first, most obvious answer. "No, they can't have been placed there in advance. It's ridiculous, whoever planned that would have to know that position wouldn't be overrun immediately and that they were going to need that kind of firepower days in advance." He shook his head and continued mumbling to himself. "You'd have to be some kind of tactical gen-"
The Dark General looked at the screen focused on Solid Core, wreathed in a soft pink glow and already flying somewhere else, probably to glass nother of his armies. Then he looked at the screen showing the fairy in armor, her pink aura slowly receding but still perfectly visible. Then he looked closer at the hill behind the group and saw a reinforced bunker door half hidden by camouflage.
His eyes widened, and he screamed in fury and hatred. Damn this Magical Girl for ruining everything! Damn her for this humiliation! The Dark General screamed the name of his nemesis, making the ground itself shake under the weight of his fury.
"'Bout damn time. Red Rose wants to talk to you." I felt a spike of adrenaline at that. The Magical Girl I had grown up hearing about? Why did she need to talk to me?
My thoughts had little time to spin before the gruff male voice was replaced by a weary female voice. "Summit, why aren't you hanging around Firebase Momo anymore? We need you back here. Quickly."
Red Rose was talking to me! I had the urge to agree to everything right away, but she deserved a full answer to why I left. I let my gaze drift to the hanging lights while I composed my answer.
"I left because I was redundant. Firebase Momo has Angels for durable fliers, The Drives and Blue Sky for high-speed recon, and Solid Core and White Knight for supporting a team. There's nothing I can contribute that doesn't already have two other Magical Girls that can do it better." That should satisfy Red Rose's question.
"Look, I can't explain everything over the phone, but you are needed. Get yourself back here pronto. Lives are at stake." Red Rose chided.
"Would it not be better if I was somewhere that my talents did not-"
Red Rose cut in, "If I don't hear that you've reported to Firebase Momo within the next five minutes I will impale you. Understood?" She hung up.
I wonder what she was agitated about? The time limit was rather strict, I would need to gate myself from Chicago to make the deadline. Perhaps I should call the number back and explain how far away I was at the moment.
Something clicked in my mind. There must be a fight, one that could use my talents, maybe even an entire army I could whittle down. If I was very lucky I might be able to spot one of those demon-summoning dark star bastards for a missile strike. The thought of a summoner vanishing under a cluster missile was an appealing image.
"From the peaks I watch! I am Magical Girl Summit!"
My sight widens to take in the whole corridor. People have stopped to point and some have taken their phones out. None of them are a danger.
My Panoply expresses inward, flattening against my skin as I shove space into itself in preparation for launching myself through a tangle of warped space.
Seconds tick by while I focus my energies. My audience changes focus from me to their surroundings. Some begin to run towards the exits or fire escapes. I remain as still as I can manage, everyone gives me a wide berth.
Should I pause my gating to explain that there is no nearby danger? No, I decide, they'll find out soon enough if they check official channels. I'm also on a strict time limit.
Weightlessness arrives with a pop as the rest of my senses go blank. I've pushed through into a tunnel of warped space, if I can remain still I will arrive precisely where I meant to go.
Subjective hours pass while I hurl through the near-void of my gate. My chronometers are inaccessible while my Panoply is this focused. A ticking clock could throw my aim off by kilometers. I know it takes only a few minutes outside, but it always seems to take forever within.
The world returns in a rush of orange light and the sharp whine of my arrival. I was once again in Firebase Momo, the breakneck construction already making it look different from yesterday morning. Orienting myself by the lakes I picked out the prefab building I was assigned to report to.
Before reporting I wanted to take a moment to let the 'heavy' space from gating disperse so I could use my shifting and elsewhere talents. I still had another three minutes before the deadline. I loosed my Panoply from its compact state to support me in the typical fashion.
I was still uncomfortably heavy after 90 seconds, but I couldn't delay any longer. I allow myself to fall towards my destination. Once close enough I tug space to alter my course to land softly in front of the door, push the door open, and enter the characterless interior.
Inside a half-dozen desks are set up, two have people working on laptops, one has White Knight fiddling with a tablet, the closest seats the receptionist. He holds up his hand to tell me to halt.
"Are you Magical Girl Summit?" He asks. I nod in response and he continues. "Do you know why you've been called here?"
"Was there a…" I trail off as I realize I'm not sure exactly what I'm meant to do in this building.
"Mandatory psych evaluations. Since Goddess White is on base now we need to make sure you aren't sending crazy thoughts her way."
Indignation!
"Hey! Uh, I've already gone through a lot of tests. It took three weeks last time, and it's less than a month since I finished them." I protest, a sharp sense of outrage appearing from nowhere.
"If that's true this should be quick. You can't opt out so just answer the questions they give you." The receptionist replied dispassionately. "And we need you to detransform before these test, as I'm sure you already know."
Deception!
"There's something you're not telling me." I state.
"I told you all I need to. Detransform and head inside for the checkup."
-LINE BREAK-
"Thanks for being patient with us." Dr Van Hall offers as we stride away from the interrogation room. "Blue Sky put all of us on edge."
"You want me to take Blue Sky's place as fast recon and backup." I stated.
"Not me specifically, but yes, the Counter Force wants a replacement and you have been thoroughly checked recently to make sure you're not an infiltrator." Dr Van Hall sighs and continues. "If you took her place you would make things a lot simpler for a lot of busy people. But please only do this if it's what you want."
The guards threw themselves to the ground at my glare. Good. I wasn't sure what I wanted to say to them anyway. I kicked the door open and let myself in.
Whatever name my nominal master possessed had not been shared with me. He lounged in the middle of a large circular table, one head constantly eating finely prepared food while the other made demands and insinuations to the enthralled servants. The second head gave pause at my intrusion, the first continued sloppy eating everything it could reach. My brother and I called him Gluttony.
"You were not called. Depart before I make an example of you." Sneered the head of Gluttony.
I took a breath. "WHERE IS MY BROTHER!" The shrill sound bounced in the suddenly quiet room.
"You failed me," Gluttony spoke after a brief pause. "Consider yourself lucky that your brother paid the price for that failure. Next time it will be you that is made part of my meal. Now leave, your presence upsets my palate."
No.
A dozen arrows appeared in Gluttony, sending bits of it all over the throne hall.
They promised.
A half dozen huge snake-like demons are crushed by slabs of brick slamming them into the ceiling.
I had to accept, I had to protect my brother, he's all I have left.
I shatter the rubble that entombs me with a touch and claw my way to the top of the pile.
I don't know what to do now.
__--__
I start at a hand landing on my shoulder. Looking back I see it's Goddess Red supported by a pillar of her skeleton warriors.
"Are you here to kill me?" I ask with a hollow voice.
"Oh, goodness no! I'm glad you killed those fuckers." She says with a toothy grin
Her next words are more sober, "I heard about your brother when I asked about this earthquake. If you promise to serve me I can bring him back to life. There's a lot of things I can do for someone capable of..." Goddess Red waved her arms to encompass the destruction. "Or would you rather try to figure this out yourself?"
"Really?" I needed him back. I'd done so much to try and save him, I couldn't let it go to waste.
"Yes. Just serve me faithfully and I'll make all these problems go away."
The one firing those beams was none other than Magical Girl Solid Core, whose team had just managed to equal Chuck Norris in sheer number of Internet Facts and memetic badassery after her last two back-to-back missions. The reason she seemed to be trying to kill the sky with pink lasers? She was trying to get her firepower under control.
It must have been some kind of joke, that the girl who had been a Magical Girl for less than a month and hadn't managed to rely on a lucky strike to the neck to kill a Hell Beast now had trouble not glassing everything in the general direction of her basic attacks. Even her sword slashes were cutting though heavily reinforced plate with ease and hitting things half a dozen feet away from the tip of the blade. And the worst part was she really didn't know what made them so strong, so fast.
Exponential growth curves are some crazy shit.
And so she fired, again and again, trying to bring the stream of energy under her control, trying to reduce the flow of power to something more manageable, but no matter what she did, there was no change. The stream of Power didn't reduce, the release valve that was her Purifier Beam apparently having only two settings, Closed and All Open. But she didn't stop. She couldn't afford to.
Her concentration in her task was so great she only noticed James was trying to get her attention when he poked her in between shots. She yelped and swung her blade wildly to the side, which James dodged with barely any effort. It still gouged an eight feet long trench in the ground. James blinked and chuckled at the sight.
"So, hey there Nep." He said. "I was around and saw you trying to shoot down the sky, and..." He trailed off. "So, what're you doing?"
Anastasia took a moment to respond, still a bit shocked at James' sudden appearance but mostly because she had almost killed him. Nevermind that he had dodged far more skillful and dangerous attacks. "Ah- um- I mean..." She shook her head and reordered her thoughts. "I mean, hi there James. I was, um... I was trying to control the power of my attacks." She explained.
"Huh. Neat." He said, briefly eyeing the new scar in the training grounds. "Any progress?"
Anastasia sighed. "None at all. I've tried everything! Visualizing a smaller beam, mental triggers, wanting really really hard to get a weaker attack, nothing worked!" She ran a hand through her hair, trying to keep her frustration under control. "And the worst part is my instincts are telling me there's a way to cut the power of the Purifier Beam in half, but I just can't get it to work!"
James nodded, and looked at the gunblade in her hands. After a few moments he nodded to himself and looked Anastasia in the eye. "Have you tried turning it off and then on again?"
She looked at him like he had grown a second head. Then she glared at him. "This is Serious, James! I had to ask Basilicom to clear the airspace around here after I almost shot down a satellite!"
James put his hands up in the universal gesture of 'whoa whoa, calm down honey'. "Just look at the gun, okay? Right above the grip." He said.
Anastasia frowned at him, but did as he asked. The gun looked the same as when she first transformed, curved white metal with purplish-blue lines and light purple highlights. And the... weird text? Weird text with symbols she had never seen in her life, but [knew] translated to Safety Lock. She then paid more attention to the little purple part right next to it and realized it was actually raised a bit from the rest of the surface. She gaped at the little button, wondering how the fuck she had never noticed that before.
She pressed the little button, then turned around to fire again. She carefully aimed in the same direction as before and pulled the trigger.
It didn't budge.
She tried again and again, but the trigger was locked in place. She turned around to see James smiling bemusedly at her. "So you did manage to turn it off." He said.
She pouted at him and shook her head. "No, That was the safety." She said. "But I guess knowing I can carry it around without risking blowing everything up is nice too."
"Oh. Then maybe you need to turn the dial over there?"
Anastasia blinked in surprise again, but looked back at her weapon without protesting. There was, indeed, a purple circle on the barrel but it wasn't raised like the button was. She turned the weapon around, trying to see how the light reflected off the weapon and noticed the circle had a small depression on its surface.
God damn it, it really was a dial.
She tried turning it and the piece turned clockwise smoothly until it locked in place. She looked back at James, who just grinned back at her and gestured for her to fire again. She turned of the safety and aimed again, bracing herself for the huge beam that would obviously shoot out of her gun. She pulled the trigger, and what shot out had less than a third of the radius and only went on for a couple hundred meters before dissipating.
She stared in shock at her attack, until James clapped her on the shoulder. "So, That's problem solved, right?" He said, and Anastasia could only nod numbly. To think the solution to her problem was that simple... James stifled a laugh at her dumbstruck expression. "Well, let's go get something to eat then. You spent the whole afternoon here, so we were getting a bit worried you know?"
Emphasis on was. Ever since they'd finished dinner she had been feeling queasy and sweating a lot. It had reached the point she was sent to the infirmary and the rest of Team GEAR plus Sega, Rei and Carnage were fussing over her, much to the annoyance of the nursing staff and herself. Sure, it felt nice to have so much care and attention directed at her, and she had been blushing for quite a while because of it, but her stomach was currently rebelling against the tyranny of the rest of her body and she really just wanted some peace and quiet and maybe a really large bucket nearby, just in case.
After the third time Gabriel offered to re-fluff her pillow and the fifth time Sega took her temperature by pressing their foreheads together, Anastasia had had enough. "C'mon guys, it's just some kinda stomach bug!" she said, looking at her friends with a pout. "You don't need to stay here all night, just let me sleep it off and I'll be fine."
"Nepgear, you don't even have a human body." Samael retorted. "Actually, I'm pretty sure you don't even have a stomach." He looked at one of the nurses standing nearby with a questioning glance and she nodded. "As far as our readings can tell, Ms. Boheart's stomach is actually some sort of arcane furnace that atomizes whatever she eats." She added. "Whatever this is, it isn't anything normal."
Samael looked pointedly at Anastasia at the Nurse's confirmation of their worries, and she squirmed a bit under his gaze but remained resolute. She just needed some time and some space to rest, dammit! "Well, then I guess White Knight's Mystery Meat Ragout was just too much for my magical bullshit stomach to handle!" She said. "Look, just gimme some time to rest and--" Her speech suddenly cut off as she felt her rebellious stomach begin to revolt in earnest. She managed to pale in record time and then started to turn green. pinkish-green.
Sega took a step forward to check on her sister, while the everyone else took a step back. They knew what was coming. "Sis? C'mon, what's wrong?" She asked, and Anastasia tried to tell her to get back, away from the Danger Zone, but she immediately clamped her mouth shut with one hand when she felt the rebel's vilest weapon rising. Her sister finally understood what the problem was but by then it was too late to escape.
Thankfully, Nepgear managed to aim away from her sister and instead merely regurgitated a stream of strangely viscous purplish-pink fluid onto the floor. She let out three more streams of this weird liquid before nothing else was left to be expelled, and the liquid pooled strangely on the floor, the large puddle coalescing into a blob and leaving very little residue behind.
The bewildered audience to this spectacle kept staring at Anastasia and the weird blob on the floor for a minute. Anastasia herself opened her mouth to comment on the sheer what the everloving fuck of this situation but quickly regretted her attempted quip when her stomach churned again and she heaved a glowing reddish thing out of her throat that flew into the blob of... whatever it was. The group then watched in horrified fascination as the blob of goo morphed into... a goo-covered horned woman?
Anastasia and Elizabeth inched closer to take a better look when the oddly familiar woman suddenly twitched and slowly, lazily rose up and stretched. Elizabeth took a step back and covered her mouth, but for a very different reason from why Nepgear did the same thing earlier.
Arise Mars had returned from the dead.
And everyone else quickly looked everywhere but at her, because she had returned from the Land of the Deceased very much naked.
Magical Girl Truth gave a mighty yawn and looked around, first down at herself, then at the astonished and beet red Anastasia sitting on the bed in front of her, then at Elizabeth off to the side looking at her with wide eyes and finally glancing at everyone else in the room.
"Huh," Said the young woman who was very much dead not even five minutes ago. "There's a lot more people in this dream than usual." Elizabeth dashed forward not a second after Arise had finished saying that sentence and wrapped her no-longer-deceased girlfriend in a bone crushing hug that Truth immediately returned. After a second of silence, she whispered to her friend and lover, "I take it from the lack of fun right now that I'm not dreaming anymore?"
Elizabeth released her from the hug and started to punch and pummel Truth wildly but without any real strength. "You fucking bitch!" She screamed, "You've been dead for the past three fucking days! Do you have any idea what we've been though?! We thought you wouldn't ever come back..." She kept hitting Arise until she finally collapsed into a sobbing mess. Truth just hugged her again, tightly and gently. "Yeah, I have an Idea..." she said, and glanced at Anastasia who watched the scene before her with wide, disbelieving eyes. "But I'm here now, okay? I'm not going anywhere." She reassured her girlfriend.
The group watched the tender moment between the two for a while, basking in the happiness born from a miracle.
"Man, I knew Nepgear was gonna make miracles thanks to her Divinity thing, but I didn't expect the Resurrection trick to be so messy!" Which was exactly when Michael decided to brutally murder the mood with a rusty spork.
The whole group gave him the stink eye. Elizabeth and Anastasia looked ready to murder him, but he just stared back at them with the satisfied smile of a man who had completed his mission without regrets. Truth was just about to release her girlfriend from her embrace so she could murder him when the nurse, who had left the room moments before Nepgear began vomiting to get the Hazmat gear, barged into the room intent on hosing them all with Bio-Hazard Containment Foam. A very unamused Rei immediately tied her up with her Chains of the Earth.
"Thanks for the save." James said without missing a beat. Rei nodded in return, "You're welcome," She said, "but you better get some straws to draw and figure our who's going to report this shit to the Commander because it sure as fuck isn't gonna be me." She then grabbed Sega by her arm and dragged her out the infirmary, leaving behind a mostly dumbstruck Team GEAR, a confused Truth and Carnage and finally a Solid Core who was currently banging her head against the wall, trying to deal with the sheer weirdness that had taken over her life since the past month.
"I've given too mush time for you to be clever, haven't I?" Asks Solar Radiance to no on in particular.
You shove of a sudden platform to fling yourself behind cover.
"Ohshit." Mutters Insight. Her eyes going wide as her face becomes the picture of perfect terror, still clutching one of the snake's heads.
The next leap Red Rose takes has the snake react in mid air, snapping all its heads away and leaving her to gracefully land on the ground. With a wordless scream Red Rose holds aloft her spear. When she brings it down it has the appearance of gleaming red light. Solar Radiance takes this as a cue to jump down from her perch, landing directly in front of Red Rose.
Red Rose poses her weapon at Solar's face. "I'm trying to save you!" She screams.
"I know." Solar stated.
A flashbang lands next to the pair. Another flies in, but they are in motion before it reaches the ground. Solar flows with inhuman grace, moving around and ahead of every motion Red Rose makes. In two heartbeats Solar is holding each of Red Rose's wrists.
One of the snake heads lets forth a stream of bile over everything, leaving a terrible trail of fog as it passes. Another drives forward, black fluid present on it's fangs.
The flashbangs detonate.
You howl in pain as the gas reaches you, every bit of skin feeling like it's trying to pull itself away from you.

"That can't be good" Brilliant Key says from next to you, voice wavering. "Shine!"
(Brilliant Key casts Shine! Solid Core's Health has been Reset to max, and her body modifiers have been negated!)
The flash blindness and blurriness from the gas clears up, you can see again.
All the stone in the courtyard has crumbled into pebbles around you. Only Gabriel remains recognizable, curled up whimpering next to a small pile of rubble. Of the rest of Team GEAR only a slimy residue remains, clinging to bits of empty armor.
Solar Radiance drops Red Rose's body. A blackened husk is all that remains of the greatest Magical Girl of her generation.
"Goodbye." Solar Radience says with a note of finality.
Briliant Key grabs your arm. "Up! We've got to-"
The snake leaps over Solar. And the sky above you is filled with sharp teeth before you've comprehended Brilliant Key's words.
She was not strong enough to get all of this filth in one blow. But, she had not needed to get stronger for a very long time and the need, the will, to become more powerful was the catalyst to become so. Limited only by the Potential someone had accrued.
And she had a lot of Potential.
The Goddess Gold exhaled, her entire being focused upon what she wanted and she Decided. -------------
Grey falling from overwhelming numbers, only to rise once more as a puppet to their sister gone mad; Her Power was insufficient to save her sisters and Hope.
-------------
Red loosing all hope and breaking, turning to those she hated with an undying passion and defiling the dead for the dark; Her Armour was lacking and unable to protect those she loved where it most mattered.
------------
White turning away from everything, walking alongside destruction in a desperate attempt to bring them together once more; Her Chains too weak for anyone to rely on to keep them anchored in the madness of the eternal conflict.
-----------
Friends and comrades falling as she had not the will to go further, to use all she could to Annihilate those who defied her.
-----------
All she had to care about turning to ash, dust and bones upon the winds of war; losing anything of worth to Rule over and keep safe, a king with a treasury of ash.
----------
Her will broken, pride ground to to nothing; Her Epic drawing to a close until she saved one of the divine, and was saved in turn.
----------
Her sisters were no longer out of her reach, new lights igniting in the dark of her life. Once more she had something to protect, and she would not lose it. Her Epic was not over yet, and this teaming mass of filth had yet to feel the Rule of Annihilation as delivered by the Goddess of Gold.
----------
Rei felt new power fill her limbs, a faint smirk curling her lips, it seems talking to Magical Girl Insight about her powers and how they may progress had been worth it. It was time to see what she could really do, and she would not be alone in this fight, for the first time in far to long.
"This is Goddess Gold," Her voice rang over the radio on the emergency frequency, "All forces withdraw from the front lines, I have a new power I want to test out. Gold Out."
Goddess Gold raised her hand to the oncoming horde as she let experience and instincts guide her, "You victory was never with in you grasp, you should have always known, only Oblivion Awaits."
The world howled in silence as sound died and a wave of golden nothingness swept over Hope. And everything ceased. The ground buckled and shook as the End fell upon the world. And as the light died, for as far as the eye could see, there was only devastation. The ground continued to shake and crumble away around them, the wind howling as it tried to drag everything into the void. Magma bubbled up from the wound in the planet, the continent being reduced to ashes, the very air no longer existing. If it had not been for the bases protections everyone would have been dragged into the vacuum.
"Um... Rei?"
"Yes, Nepgear?" Rei answered somewhat numbly as she looked at the changes she that wrought. She had gone over bored somewhat hadn't she? Hopefully she did not hit anything of value, well beyond the continent at any rate.
"Ignoring the lack of air and earthquakes, isn't there a ocean near by? One that you just blew away, that's about to come crashing back down on to the exposed magma?"
Rei calmly turned to face her support, "Yes, there is. Give me a moment. 'Control, continental wide steam explosion imminent, Gold Out.' Everyone, Run!"
As they raced to the gate, Sega tried to lighten then mood, "Well you hit the gate the UD was using, shattering it and destroying their full legions. So we won right? It's not like we need to live on Hope."
Blood pooled on the ground, glinting darkly in the moonlight and under the flickering light of the flames that now engulfed her town. The air was filled with acrid smoke that billowed from the flames, sending embers streaking across the night sky to be caught in the wind and formed a blazing orange maelstrom. Thick, choking smoke darkened the streets as the town burned. In the midst of the smoke and flames, another Magical Girl danced, twin blades flickering in the dark and spilling blood endlessly. The sound of the battle slowed down as the resistance crumbled, each death – every drop of blood; every burning ember - fuelling the 'Queen's' power to greater heights.
The hooded Girl laughed as the scolding wind swirled around her, playing as ashes fell like snow upon the carnage. Row upon row of impaled and defiled bodies stretched down, arrayed below the throne Inspiring Ember 'sat' upon.
------------------- A pool shimmered in the fire light, filled with crimson liquid. Bleached bone chairs were arrayed around tables filled with roast meat.
----
Cages of metal, formed from twisted wreckage, glowed orange from the heat. Charred bones filled the prisons that rested in the inferno.
----
Elaborate pieces of art crafted out of blood, fire, metal and bone rose up into the sky, casting hauntingly beautiful shadows across the scorched ground. Raging fires illuminated the ever-shifting faces entrapped in steel forevermore.
------------------
Magical Girl Burning Blood inhaled deeply as the last demon fell. Fire danced in her veins, the rush of spilt blood making the world take on a crystalline edge, the destruction and desecration a high like no other. A siren call she didn't wish to resist. The taste of ash in the air, the scent of fire and the burning wind that caressed her body, it was sublime.
I love destruction, the breaking of taboo. The look of terror and utter helplessness as I rip those weaklings apart. It is such a pity I rarely have an excuse to let loose.
Jade Evens turned away from the corpses, burning the scum with a wave of a hand. The 18-year-old Epic took her time to appreciate her artwork as she walked through the inferno consuming the town of traitors. Smouldering ruby eyes burned with hate and fury as she stared at the endless parade of death. Thousands of Daemons, Nightmares, and more demon-worshiping human filth formed a twisted congregation looking towards the alter that now stood where 'Inspiring Ember' had held her gathering.
Ascending the stairs, Jade relished the Dark Magical Girl's screams and whimpering. The burning wind whipped her dark cape around, as the black-haired girl reached out to cup the other girl's face.
I want to kill her, to smash her foul head like a rotten egg. To rip her mind apart and trap her into endless nightmares. I want her to suffer!
Visions danced through Jades' mind as she let her mind ruin wild. Of breaking the traitor, of burning the traitor alive. Using her magic to seize control of the other girl's blood and making her dance until her feet ground down to stump. Setting her nerves alight with agony.
Weak! Pathetic! Traitor!
Jade felt her lips part, a feral snarl gracing her face as she stared into Inspiring Ember's terrified, confused and agonized golden eyes. She could torture this thing for the rest of time and never feel it was enough, never get her fill. But that would be worthless and counterproductive – she could let herself have this much and no more. To go any further and to drag out her fun longer would be counterproductive and risk something going wrong. Jade liked to think she was more disciplined than that.
The old Story Maker had stopped screaming, just glaring at her in hatred and incomprehension.
"Twenty-four million," Jade said, running a finger down the other girl's face, "two hundred and eighty-four thousand. That is how many people you have killed, or helped kill, since magic came to Earth. Humans that is – I'm not even getting into our 'allies' – even if you didn't pull the trigger. You helped sabotage the defenses of Hope, charmed and hypnotized defenders to give classified information. Turned thousands to demon cults and worship, systematically broke and manipulated over one hundred Magical Girls. Helped arrange the sacrifice of tens of thousands of souls, human souls, to try to create corruptive 'Black Mud'. You did a good job hiding the blight and filth you had been building in this town, of putting on the facade of a hero of the UL and Pillar. A survivor since the start, all the while spreading poison."
Jade stopped and stepped back, letting a drop of blood land on the traitor's mouth, cutting off the pain for a moment and healing her throat letting her speak one last time.
The ashen skinned girl coughed wetly, "Why?"
"I just said."
"And why do you care!" Her voice was cut off as she was wracked by spasms, blood dribbling down her chin. "You are as much for the Dark as I am!" She jerked her head to the slaughter below, her voice taking on a seductive undertone – all liquid flames and ambrosia. "If the Unified Light saw this you would be hunted down, and you know this. You limit yourself unnecessarily, only letting your true self out in the shadows and never taking credit. Unknown and unremembered, no one of your stature and might should live like that. Joining the Unified Dark would let you play and dance until Gaia ran red, until the sky burned...."
Jade rolled her eyes, cutting off the grey-clad girl. "Yes, I'm a monster without remorse but I'm also not stupid. I don't want to fight for the rest of my life." She reached into a pocket and withdrew a blade, a bone saw, a container and a pair of pliers continuing to speak as she did so. "I love fighting. I delight in murder. In crushing my foes and causing them agony without limits or end. Burning the world, letting it all be consumed by fire as I drink deep in rivers of blood. But I want to see the stars, I want to walk on the Moon and see Mars. I wish to see how far technology can go, to live in a flourishing society."
The Queen of Flames and Blood pricked her finger, letting a drip of blood enter the traitors mouth. Her blood answered Jade's call and Hanna Carter froze, her regalia vanishing into motes of light as her transformation, her mantle of power, was ripped from her grasp. Jade cut into the girl's chest, not letting her do anything but listen. "The Endless War won't let that happen. For Humanity to live free, to show our might to the cosmos, we must crush those who would drag us down. The Unified Dark would let us live, but what life would it be?"
Flesh parted bloodlessly, revealing white ribs etched with the runes and seals of brand craft and necromancy powered by those she killed. Picking up her saw, Jade began cutting. "We would spend every moment struggling, fighting among ourselves as much as anything else. Power over all other matters, petty warlords and tyrants forcing others to obey them. No normal, no healthy human civilization can rise up and sustain itself by the mentality espoused by the Unified Dark. They're right, those with power do make the rules, but it takes only a short time for human societies to go beyond that. Laws, customs and compromise are key parts of what we need. I will not join something so self-destructive for a transient pleasure. There will always be demons to fight, to play with and the UL doesn't care overly much what I do to things like you."
A crack filled the air as Jade broke the bones off, revealing the monstrous girl's heart. It was hideous. Blackened lines covered the surface of flesh that glowed with a profane light. Embedded into it was a nail etched with brand craft. A phylactery of sorts, containing the tormented and still-alive soul of the Story class Girl, Recursive Dawn. The key to Inspiring Ember's apparent immortality and power, enhanced healing and rebirth with the dawn as long as she was not killed by something too powerful.
"I can live in a society that is not drained by war, have friends and family without the constant risk of them dying and still fight. Or I can live in a hellscape of ever shifting alliances and betrayal, never growing or living as a human is supposed to. I prefer to take the rational choice."
Burning Blood ripped out the nail, holding the thing with her pliers before placing it into a sealed container and slipping it into her pocket. Blood spattered on the ground and throne, reflecting the fire and ash laden sky as the tainted girls heart was ripped out.
The blood-soaked ground ignited around Burning Blood as she glided though the ruins, untouched by the inferno. When dawn broke all that was left of the small Australian town was ash and a single message at the local Counter Force base.
'Even the greatest inspirations fall, just like Hope. And sometimes you just nail it.

"Ms. Evens!"
Jade jerked awake, her transformation phrase at her lips and a fireball in her hand, before the person she was about to incinerate registered.
Mr. Stark glared at her, shaking slightly at the sight of the fireball, "Put that out, you know magic is barred in school unless prior permission is obtained or it's an emergency."
Slumping, Jade let the fireball go as she bit back a flush as the rest of the class began muttering. "Sorry, sir. I had a late night." She could hear people whispering, debating if she could be a Magical Girl. Only for those arguments too be dismissed because she had awakened her magic too late. It was kind of funny, no one seemed to register that the first time she had displayed magic was not necessarily the first time she used it.
I hate High School, I can't wait until I can go to Uni.
"You need to pay attention and sleep if you want to do well on your HSC. Understand?"
"Yes, sir. Sorry, sir," Jade said resignedly, turning her attention back to the board.
Hell, I might even make some friends there, maybe even find a lover. Well, a girl can hope.
It had been about two hours since the Solid sisters headed out for another mission, but she was not particularly worried about them. Those two were literally too thick-headed to die, the younger sister even more so than the older one.
Speaking of, Rev snuck another glance at Uni and suppressed a sigh. Her own sibling was still lying on her bed and browsing on her Datamine; the girl was slowly getting over what happened earlier, but it would take at least the evening and a good night's rest before Rev could hope to see her smile again.
She ignored her own throbbing heart at the memories of people she lost during her career; one got used to it after a while and after Alex died... yes, Rev knew the feeling well. Which was why she could not show weakness in front of her sister, especially not now. She needed to be strong for Uni's sake.
One thing she was glad about was that they did not need to share space with anyone else; Magical Girls did get some amenities from serving, after all. Having some time to quietly recover from the shock should help.
It was about time for dinner, though. Rev wondered what to get for the two of them when agitated steps moved up towards their tent and someone burst inside without even knocking or any- of course it was Sega. Damned intuition...
A pretty haunted-looking Sega it was, with quivering lips and a somewhat exasperated looking sister trailing after her. The older Boheart just ignored Uni's surprised squeak and went straight into Rev's arms. "Reeev! I need huggles!"
Then she proceeded to push her backwards until the two sat on Rev's own bed, with Sega in her lap and curling up against her chest.
She could feel them, two sets of stares from two younger siblings. She felt her cheeks heat up in embarassment, but the indignation fought strong with concern over her girlfriend.
In the end, concern won out and Rev sighed heavily before giving Anastasia a pointed look, one hand on Sega's head and the other on her back. "Okay, I give. What happened?"
The younger sister sighed as well and, after an exchange of stares and a curt nod from Uni, went to sit on the opposite bed, next to her fellow Core... who was a lot more attentive now. "I, uh, I get why she is like that, really... but I still think she's overreacting a bit."
"You're so cruel, Ana! My poor heart can't take that much!"
And now Sega was being theatralical on purpose. Rev shook her head over the fact she could not even stay serious while being depressed... or whatever was going on here. She did not stop stroking her back, though.
"Anyway, uh... how to best say this... you know we went on another mission?"
Rev nodded slowly while Uni started rolling her eyes; hm, she could see her younger sister perk up a little, the distraction allowing her to focus on something else. "Oh let me guess, you did something incredible again?"
There was a healthy portion of sarcasm dripping from her words, which Rev approved of. Apparently, this really was the only way to bear with this family, no matter which one. Ana blushed a little and looked away. "So to speak, I guess. It's probably supposed to be a secret, but you two would find out tomorrow at the latest anyway. We went to retrieve the Old Guard today. Silver Hero, Grey Champion, Solar and Lunar Radiance... and White Soul, too."
The Sorts paused, both of them. Rev heard from Sega about the revival and seals... and maybe she told Uni about it just in case, not that anyone could prove she did it... and they both knew the Old Guard had been dead for years. Everyone knew.
If they were resurrected and bound to Goddess Red's command, then... "You fought the Old Guard."
Ana did not meet her gaze while Sega mock-whimpered and nuzzled closer to her. "Yes, pretty much. We had Red Rose with the team and Rei on the barricades, though."
That did not sound as bad, actually; either there was more, or her girlfriend was just exploiting the situation for some skinship. Not that Rev minded her, even though she would never admit that.
"That doesn't sound so bad", Uni mirrored her thoughts a moment later; she was talking slower than usually, obviously trying to not show her surprise at the fact Nepgear met one of her idols, Grey Champion. "So, which one did you fight? Silver Hero? Grey Champion?"
There was an eager edge over the second name, but Rev might as well have been the only one who heard it. Neither of the other girls knew Uni for long enough to tell. Ana, on her part, fidgeted while her sister squeezed tighter. "All of them! She fought all of them!"
Both Sorts raised eyebrows at the younger Boheart, who shrunk a little more and blushed; thinking about it, she was actually adorable like that.
"Actually... I kind of had to duel White Soul. Sega is still overreacting, though! I didn't get a single scratch from anything she did!"
Anastasia grew a little more convinced of herself as she spoke while, much to Rev's surprise, Uni rolled her eyes at the exclamation. "You know, it's not that impressive after what I saw you do earlier."
As much as her previous words failed to get a reaction out of them, Ana's next response was mumbled, barely audible to Rev. "And I might or might not have tanked Alex's spear..."
The moment she realised what those words meant, Rev's brain short-circuited to the point she just stared at the girl sitting opposite to her. What she just heard was not possible.
"Alex? Who is that?"
Of course Uni did not know, but... Sega answered before Rev got out of her stupor. "Alex, y'know? Our Alex. Big Alex."
And she groped her chest to emphasize the size-difference, the surprise over this action finally making Rev reboot and throwing off her girlfriend as she rose up. "You did what?!"
Uni flinched and leaned back while Ana fiddled with her thumbs. "Uh... I kind of took her spear to the face and survived... four times."
"Uh... I still don't... oh. Wait... wait."
Uni's eyes slowly widened as she pieced it together and turned, blanching almost as much as Rev probably did by now. "You're telling me you took a hit from Juggernaut Drive?"
"Y-Yes?"
Uni and Rev groaned in unison, the older sister falling back down on her bed and quickly picking up Sega again. Now she needed someone to hold onto. With Alex in the equation, her girlfriend's behaviour made a whole lot more sense.
"You... you're... I can't believe it, how does that kind of stuff keep on happening to you?! How are you still alive?"
Uni sounded as shocked as Rev felt. Ana, on the other hand, held up her hands at the tone and shrugged helplessly, her voice being almost as hysteric as Uni's. "Don't ask me, I'm too busy trying not to die to wonder why it's happening!"
Uni groaned again and shook her head a few times while Rev slowly raised a hand to rub her temple. That was a little much excitement... wait. If they fought Alex... then Alex should be...
"...You recovered her?"
She barely dared hoping, but the weak nod Sega gave between her chest was all the confirmation Rev needed to let out a breath of relief; her heart throbbed again before the pain turned into joy. Wetness stung in her eyes and she barely managed to blink the tears away. Stopping herself from jumping up and going to see Alex was even harder.
"Yes. She's still unconcious, though... and safe, too. The infirmary is guarded pretty well right now, with half a dozen Magical Girls in there."
She gave the younger girl a curt nod to acknowledge her reassurance -wondering when Anastasia learned to pick up Rev's tells like that- before letting out a sigh. "I guess that explains why Sega is so out of it. To pick a fight with Alex of all people... there is no one who survived a direct hit from her."
"She kind of mentioned that, too", Ana admitted with a sheepish look while her eyes flitted across the room, still unable to meet her gaze. The girl looked awfully happy -and maybe a little smug- about the whole thing. "Now the list of people that survived has two names on it. Sega got hit, too."
Now this news made her clutch the woman in her arms tighter. "You did what, Sega?"
Her girlfriend chuckled helplessly and shrugged against her. "Couldn't really help it, she ambushed us there."
Now her worry mixed with annoyance over Sega's attitude again and Rev barely stopped the sigh. She just squeezed some more instead and shook her head. "Just shut up."
Meanwhile, Ana was glancing from the two of them back to Uni, the silence between all of them growing a little more awkward after a minute or two passed... then she turned her head fully to the younger Sort. "Um... could I get a hug, too?"
Rev had to admit, she almost giggled at the luminous blush and Uni's sputtering. Sega actually did it when she finally answered: "Hmph, fine..."
"CHEATER!" She screamed in righteous fury. "You should be dead! Like, five times over!"
All present are seriously surprised and confused, many jump to get their weapons and most of those present prepare to get the hell out of there. The sole exceptions are two Magical girls.
Anastasia, who is screaming internally at another mission going out of control just when she should be done with it, and Rei.
Rei, who jumped in front of Anastasia to shield her from whatever her mad sister throws at her. Not that Solid Core needs to be shielded from anything, but it's the principle of the thing.
"Ni." She hissed, drowning her sadness at having to fight her little sister by blood with fury at her sister's threats to her pet/adopted little sister/possible future little-sister-in-law. "You have a lot of nerve--"
"Oh shut the fuck up, Rei." The furious, mad Goddess interrupted. "This bitch had the gall to ruin my slumber party with the Old Guard and Juggernaut Drive, and she somehow cheated to do that. I'm gonna fuck her up for that."
Everyone in the clearing froze, not out of fear but sheer disbelief.
"...What the fuck, Ni?" Not even Rei could believe her sister was acting like this. "You resurrected half a dozen dead girls for a slumber party?"
"Do you have any idea how boring living in the Unified Darkness is?" Her sister answered without missing a beat. "All I have to do all day when I'm not in some mission is kill Demons and listen to Ichi talk about love and friendship and aargh!" To say Goddess Red was stressed would be an understatement. "I can't even shitpost on TOHO anymore! So fuck yes, I did ressurect half a dozen magical girls to have a fucking slumber party! It was gonna be great! Amazing! The best goddamned slumber party Hell had ever seen!"
Everyone present blinked in astonishment. Goddess Red, one of the strongest Magical Girls there is, was ranting about ruined slumber parties. Rei was seriously considering killing her sister to spare both of them further embarassment.
"But then miss glow-in-the-dark over there had to show up and ruin everything! And I could've dealt with it, I could've found other dead people to have my slumber party with because it's not like we're running out of them any time soon, but this newbie bitch somehow manages to rush through most of the old guard unscathed? And then she tanks three spears from Juggernaut Tits over there? I call bullshit! Bullshit I say!"
By now the entire Strike Force was seriously reconsidering how much they respected Goddess Red. Quite a few had already started recording her rant, that had moved on from how bullshit Anastasia was and onto lamenting her missed chance to play with those "Divinity-level tits".
Rei, for her part, had moved past merely considering straight to taking action.
"Alright, fuck this!" Goddess Gold brandished her Fragment of Annihilation, the light of Oblivion gathering around it. "Stay still Ni, big sis is going to put you out of your misery."
Goddess Red merely glared at her sister for interrupting her rant. "Good fucking luck," she replied. "I'll be behind seven billion skeletons." And she gave the group the finger before teleporting out.
Moments later, a horde of skeletons ranging from human-sized soldiers to enormous abominations of bone and malice started pouring out from behind the wall where the Fallen Goddess stood.
They were promptly annihilated by Rei, along with the wall and a good portion of the horde behind them.
The Unified Light Strike Force used the breathing room Goddess Gold had bought them to wearily pick up and reload their weapons, and the spellcasters among them started chanting. The sole exceptions were Insight and Team GEAR.
"Man, is she going to be in for a bad surprise." Insight said.
"Yeah," Michael agreed. "If she thinks Nepgear is a cheater now, just wait until she discovers Nepgear is as good at killing armies as she is at tanking hits!"
And bullying was the only thing they could call it. Between Nepgear and Rei, the army of seven billion skeletal monstrosities didn't last very long. The second army of Spawn of Chaos Red had summoned lasted just a bit longer than the skeletons, but didn't manage to deal much damage either.
And all the while they demolished both armies, Nepgear was saying how sorry she was and Rei was swearing she'd spank Ni's ass until she couldn't sit.
In the end, they did get through Ni's seven billion skeletons and God knows how many spawn without taking a hit, a display of effortless bullshittery and utter unfairness that reduced the previously ranting Goddess to futile tears and cries of how mean they were.
It was such a pitiful sight that even Rei was struggling to remain angry.
Everyone was just standing around awkwardly. On the one hand this was the perfect opportunity to aprehend Goddess Red and deny the enemy one of its most powerful assets, but on the other hand she looked so tiny and sad that'd feel like a total dick move, even if she was bugfuck insane.
Someone had to do something to break the awkward atmosphere, but no one wanted to make the first move. Thus, it naturally fell to the one less likely to die horribly of the crying Goddess lashed out.
"Um... I'm sorry?" Anastasia said, slowly approaching Ni. The Goddess, for her part, started crawling away in fear and hid herself behind a large rock that was once part of a rather impressive wall.
Everyone sweatdropped at the sight of the once-mighty Goddess Red, cowering and holding back tears behind a rock, her head timidly poking out of cover to keep an eye on the pair of Magical Girls that terrorized her.
Rei facepalmed at her sister's antics. "This is fucking ridiculous..." She muttered. "Get out of there, Ni. It's over, we're taking you back to our base."
"...M'not going. Purple's mean."
"Ni, Nepgear is the purest cinnamon roll this side of Heaven. She's not going to hurt you without reason." She deadpanned.
"...'s mean. Keeps wrecking my plans. Ruined 'm party." Ni shot a pitiful, tearful glare at Anastasia, who looked away awkwardly.
A vein visibly popped on Rei's forehead. " I'll ruin your ass if you don't get out of that rock, I swear to--"
"Rei!" Anastasia interrupted her. "You're scaring her again!" And indeed, Ni had retreated back behind the rock the moment Rei started shouting. Anastasia mouthed a 'leave it to me' to her adopted big sis/owner, which earned her a raised eyebrow and a snort, but the Golden Goddess nodded.
"Ni? Can you please look at me?" The quivering mess of fear and misery just retreated further behind the rock.
Anastasia walked a bit closer and crouched, then tried again, putting as much gentleness as she could in her voice. "Ni, look at me, please. I promise I won't do anything to hurt you, but I can't apologize properly if you don't."
Slowly, Ni raised her head and looked at her, still a bit tearful. Anastasia gave her the gentlest smile she could muster and continued.
"I'm sorry about messing up your plans, Ni. I didn't have much choice at the time, but I am sorry." She said with as much honesty as she could, and when Ni hesitantly nodded in acceptance of her apologies, she pressed forward. "And I'm really, really sorry for ruining your slumber party. I feel really bad about it because, I kinda owe you a lot. If it weren't for you my sister would still be dead, you know?"
Ni's eyes widened in surprise, and Nepgear smiled. "So I really wanted to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for bringing my sister back to me."
Ni stared at her for a minute, while Nepgear did her best to look as gentle and non-threatening as possible, and since this is Nepgear we're talking about, was very, very gentle and non-threatening.
"...Y'r welcome." She finally said, looking away.
Gotcha, thought Anastasia. "And since I owe you a big one and ruined the party you were planning, how about you come with us so we can throw an even bigger, better one for you?"
And now everyone was staring at Nepgear. Rei was barely managing to keep a straight face at what her pet was doing, and Insight's grin was positively enormous.
"Promise?" Came the tiny reply, looking at Nepgear with hopeful eyes.
Anastasia nodded and looked Ni in the eye. "I swear, you're going to have the biggest, most amazing slumber party ever."
Rei, who couldn't hold back her smile anymore, decided to give her some help. "And I swear no one will interrupt us. I'll even leave the spanking for after the party!"
Ni's eyes widened and she decided, correctly mind you, that the nice purple girl would be a much better and sturdier cover than a solid piece of rock. Nepgear immediately embraced the scared, broken girl and started massaging her back and patting her head to calm her down.
Rei's joyous smile just widened at the sight.
It was at that moment that a portal opened beside them and a new magical girl stepped out, ready for battle.
"Ni! Don't worry, big sis is here to save you from the vile, evil forces of Liiiiiii..." a moment after her dramatic entrance, Goddess Grey took in the situation around her.
The sister she came to rescue crying in the arms of the purple Magical Girl she had been ranting about a couple days ago. Her misguided older sister standing beside them with a smile somewhere between joy and endless amusement. The group of soldiers and Magical Girls, including the ones her sister had resurrected, standing in the sidelines watching and in some cases recording them.
"...sup?" She said lamely.
"Hey Ichi!" Rei said, full of cheer. "Put the swords away and wait a bit while evac gets here. We're gonna have a slumber party!"
Ichi looked at her older sister, then at her little sister, who was just cuddling happily with Anastasia now. She blinked, and slowly lowered her swords.
"...okay?" She shuffled awkwardly for a bit, then decided that it'd be a good idea to find someone to explain to her what the heck just happened. She decided it was best to avoid Red Rose and the manically grinning girl beside her, and went straight to a group of soldiers who were wearing newer, more advanced armor than the rest.
"Hey. Can someone tell me what the heck is going on here? Because I'm completely lost."
They briefly exchanged glances, some unspoken communication passing between them before their apparent leader spoke. "Nothing much, really." James said, giving her a shrug. "Just what passes for normal nowadays."
"Hey... Aquila?"
"Hm?" The elf hums questioningly at you from where she's testing the draw strength of her bow, and performing maintenance on the rest of her equipment.
"Am I a masochist?"
She freezes in place for a moment. before turning to give you a look.
You fidget from your position between Rei and Sega, the two older girls cuddled up against you. "What? It's a legitimate question!"
Aquila rolls her eyes.
Rei stretches and leans a bit harder, tipping you over to lounge on top of you as you squeak for help.
-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-
"You could at least apologize!" You shout at Rei as she walks away laughing. "Rei!"
Lucky laughs as she exits the tent. "You do realize that being her pet, she doesn't actually have to apologize for that, right?"
You pout at her. "You're not helping Lucky."
James walks past. "I think she's all kinds of help."
"Dammit James!"
The both of them laugh as they take their own leave. Aquila patting you on the back as she passes herself. "Don't worry too much about it Nepgear. Regardless, if you're going to the training grounds later today, it's where I'll be. Going to exercise and unwind some from yesterday."
"Alright. Take it easy for now though, okay?"
She waves. "Don't worry. I'll be fine."
You Have (5) Actions
Staging Ground Ataraxia has replaced Firebase Momo as your home port. After you have completed a Day's missions, you will return here for storyline based upgrades to your allies, and to confirm any changes your actions have made to the resources that can be focused into the coming Answer. Your time at base will be split into two sections, a (Morning) and an (Evening) split. At the day's start, you will have (10) actions, five for each phase of the day. Training will be the only action that will require you to spend more than one action in order to complete.
When choosing from the available actions, remember that storyline upgrades for your allies, or Anastasia herself can be obtained if specific actions are taken, and later followed up on down the road. While running around Ataraxia, you have the chance of making friends, enemies, rivals, or even finding yourself a student. As time passes, and Answerer draws closer, more actions will become available, while other actions might become unavailable. During this time bonus missions might also crop up, giving chances at otherwise unattainable information or simple closure for important characters.
[] Visit Doctor Alexandra's Team -Alex's team responsible for the Frost Dragon made some new weapons and you're curious about them. (Team GEAR recently got some new equipment. Choosing this option will let you get an update about what they have without requiring to figure out on your own in the field. Will also update their EXP expenditures and ability growth as well.)
[] Visit The Magical Girls On Base
-[] Write in 4 (List of Girls on the Base will be added to the bottom.) --With Answerer drawing closer, Magical Girls Independent and Aligned alike are gathering in droves. It's a concentration of sheer power that boggles the mind to think about. (Visit Magical Girls that have gathered for the Offensive. Possibly unlock new ally choices for missions, make friends, enemies, maybe even find yourself a cute little kohai to help!)
[] Visit the Command Tent -No more missions for the day, but you're curious about how the War is going. (Gain information about the Eternal War's current state, future missions, or even the effects of what certain missions might have. Will open the Mission Select Screen.)
[] Visit a Friend
-[] Write in 2 --You've still got some friends around the base that you haven't talked to in a bit. Maybe chat them up and see how they're doing? (Visit people you already know and are on base to update their character sheets.)
[] A Tale of Three Knights -White Knight - Kathrine - requested your help on a personal task. It has nothing to do with Operation Answerer, but she's a friend... right? And you help friends. (Will trigger a mini-mission without Team GEAR.)
[] In Memoire - The White -You know Rei rather well now, but San is still mostly a mystery to you. Yet... something is pulling you to her. To learn. (Visit San Mitsubishi directly and hear more of her story. Possibly unlocking more of her character sheet.)
[] Librum Of A Star
-[] Write In Magic Question (Relating to your own, or any others.) --Lucky is helping Samael improve his little 'workshop', utilizing her comprehensive knowledge of magic. She might even be able to help you with improving your own abilities as well. (Ask literally anything you can think of, but only one big question a visit. Branch questions based on the core question are allowed, but they have to be in-character and follow a simple logic path from the original question. Results from this can range anywhere from new spells for certain characters to completely rebuilding certain abilities based on the questions asked.)
Training
Power is something you now have in spades... but using that power properly is something else altogether. Most Magical Girls willingly stop expanding their power after a certain point, and instead focus on learning how to control it in ways it is not naturally capable of. With some work, and more than a bit of practice, you might also be capable of doing these things as well. (You can only choose one, and it will cost you two actions to do.)
[] Spar
-[] Write in who you want to challenge to one. (List of Girls on the Base will be added to the bottom.) If there was ever one thing you were good at, it's learning during combat. Challenge someone to kick your ass, and see how much they can teach you while doing so.
[] Practice
-[] Write in what you want to try. You've got ideas on what you can do. But you need to figure out how to actually do it. Some things might take more effort than others though, and still others will need a partner to practice with.

---[x] Explain your respective abilities to each other so you know what to expect when fighting together
---[x] You noticed that Sega and Rev had some kind of synergy during Operation Starborn; maybe Uni and you can figure out something like that as well?
---[x] Just spend some time together and work out how to best utilize your strengths and minimize weaknesses
--[x] Also take some time to look over your Weapon in detail like you never got around to doing.
-[x] A Tale of Three Knights
Her battle against that indestructible thing calling itself a magical girl has already taken it's bloody toll from her. A battle in which so much as getting clipped would have spelled death, forcing her to expend even more energy then she normally would have in making sure she didn't. Entering into the battle with Goddess Gold already on her last legs is little more than a final shout of defiance at the inevitable.
----[x] Make a special mention and explanation of Core Purge; it is incredibly useful due to its precise targeting and Uni as a fellow Core might be able to use it as well
The two training plans that we came up with between updates were the one Lost quoted above and
[ ] You want to try making Starshine be impossible to completely block.
-[ ] Try to make the countless beams of Starshine be more densely packed so that the damage is focused on a single point and a much smaller area gets glassed.
-[ ] Try to make the beams reach that point along paths that curve outwards and then back inwards in different ways, so that a target at that point will be getting attacked from multiple directions at once
-[ ] If either or both are successful, try to use that to imitate Punch-Through.
--[ ] Have someone who won't get hurt by Starshine, such as Michael or Gabriel, shoot their guns at someone who won't get hurt by the guns, such as Sega, so that you have something to try intercepting.
