Crystalwatcher's Magical Girl Quest!

Personally I've gotten into the bad habit of not proofreading whatever I type before I submit it wherever, whether it be a post on forums or in a chatroom. The omake I submitted is a good example of what I'm talking about.

I...! Generally don't proofread, because I usually don't makes mistakes.
Which means when I do make mistakes I don't catch them 'till much later and...

I have a little moment.

Of course, the fact that I'm aware of this means that I can put in an effort to fix it. :)
Self improvement FTW!

OK, I'm not quiet done with the update yet, but I have to thank everyone for the omakes.

There's just enough for me to implement some mood whiplash in the dream sequence when taken all together.

BLOOD GEAR
Roughly three hours after you had split from Truth, Rei finds you combing over what few magical 'tomes' the base had. When you fail to respond to their appearance, Rei plucks the book you're reading right out of your hands.

"Wha- Rei! I was reading that!" Goddess Gold raises a brow at your reaction, before turning the book around to take a peek at it's pages. What she finds doesn't cause the brow to lower at all.

"Control Spells? What need would you have for something like this?"

You hop slightly from your seated position to snatch the book back from your 'owner'. "I saw something during the fight at the graveyard that I felt was really important... so I came here to see if it was what I think it was. What are you doing here?"

You flip through the pages, to find your lost place as Rei walks around your small pile of book, in order to take a seat herself. "Ran into Ada. She mentioned how you had something to ask me, and that you'd probably be here until lights out. So I came to see what you were so focused on that you had barely even said hi to her. She was annoyed by that you know."

You blushed at that. You had a vague recollection of running into Ada on your way over to the little hole that the 'magic library' had been squirreled away. The problem was you had completely forgotten you had asked her to send Rei your way if she saw her. "Umm... Sorry. I forgot I had asked her to send you my way..."

Rei waves you down, "Don't worry. We've all made mistakes like this. Anyway: what did you want to ask me?"

You look down at the book in your hands, your place long since gone during the conversation. "I..." How to ask? It felt rude to simply come out and state the question, but you couldn't think of any way to politely word it. Ni was Rei's sister, so such a question...

You bite the bullet. "I saw something during my fight with Candy Heart-" You nearly choke on the name. The young girl had sacrificed her life to save you... And you repaid that by blowing her chest all over the ground. "There... there was a symbol on her chest. After I burned away part of her armor. I... wanted to ask you... do you know what it is I saw?" You keep your gaze turned down. Partly so you don't have to face Rei. But also partly so she doesn't see the grief of Candy Heart's death through your eyes and the pain it was causing you.

A small bit a pride that you held on to.

"I think so." Rei's voice is soft, like she was thinking of something painful. "It shows up on everyone she resurrects." You blink and look up at her, your grief momentarily forgotten. Rei has her fingers crossed, hands held up to her face. Her gaze is distant, glaring down towards the floor of the storage space. "We never could find out what it was supposed to be, but we were able to confirm it always showed up in the hardest to hit place on a fighter. So we know it's supposed to be important... But Ni never liked the idea of resurrecting people to be expendable slaves, so we didn't do much investigation of that particular ability. Why she's resurrecting more people now I have no idea."

She noticeably refrains from suggesting that she might not have understood her sister as much as she had thought.

Instead Rei shakes her head and stands, "That's besides the point. We should get to bed soon. And you should relax tomorrow." Just as she's about to leave though, your voice stops her.

"I can't."

Goddess Gold looks over her shoulder and looks at you questioningly.

"I don't have time to slow down. Time to relax..." You move to put the book on brainwashing away. "Every time I leave the base, I run into something that's so far out of my league, only dumb luck lets me survive... and then there's the fact each time someone I cared about died. First my sister. Then Jessica and Richard. And now..." You fail to finish your sentence. Rei simply stands in the exit, watching you as you continue to put books away. "If I don't get stronger... who dies next? Two times I've left the base, and on both missions I run into your sisters. Ichi blew away the other base, and now Ni... I never even got to visit my sister's grave!" You scream the last. Tears flow from your eyes, and the grief you were carefully ignoring pours out.

"Sega's grave was in the portion that White Knight's last attack wiped out... Just before we landed, she offered to let me go visit it. I chose to focus on the mission first. Sure, in hindsight that was a good thing but..." Rei turns away from you, allowing your privacy as you sob silently. Your one chance to visit your sister's grave was turned down, and because of that you'd never be able to go. Never be able to pay your respects to the girl that had taken care of you when you mother had broken from your father's death. The sister that you had loved more than anything else in the world.

The image of her remains is burned into your eyes to the point you see them whenever you try to blink away the tears.

Shifting of cloth, and Rei picks you up. "Come on. I'll carry you back, just rest."

She says nothing as you bury your face into her shirt and cry.

A wall of red energy. Unstoppable power meeting immovable object.

It bounces.

The wall of air knocks the helicopter about like a leaf in the storm. Blue Sky is torn from it, metal rending as her grip tears through the framing, and she is tossed free.

You watch as she falls away, hand outstretched in a futile attempt to save herself...

A sliver of light crosses her torso, and she is sliced in half. But before she can scream, a torrent of light washes her away.

You pour more into the red wall holding back the End. Everything you have, and then some, but inexorably it inches closer, micrometer by micrometer. And though it only lasts for a split second, it feels as if eternity passes you by.

And as the light fades, a wasteland greets you.

"Nep-?" You feel despair rise in the pit of your stomach. The cute girl you had claimed as yours was nowhere to be seen. The soldiers meant to guard her more than likely dead and gone, along with the Knight that you had entrusted with her safety. "Land! Now!"

The pilot looks at you like your crazy, but you silence him with a glare that had given Dark Generals heart attacks. Properly cowed the useless mongrel quickly brings the machine around to rest where the cemetery once stood, and you leap off. Power to your legs, you sprint across the ground faster than you could ever remember running. And there, in the center...

Anastasia lies on the ground in two separate locations. Her blood leaks slowly, dyeing the black glass she rests on red. A small orb of light shines weakly halfway between the two halves of her body, and as you watch bits and pieces of her break off into light to be drawn in by the tiny little orb.

"Nepgear!" You run to her side, gathering what's left of her torso into your arms. "Nep...?" Your heart hurts. Your limbs are heavy, and your throat sore from constricting. "Nep, can you hear me?" Her eyes are dull and lifeless: the vibrancy that marked her existence as unique was faded to nothing. Her hair is almost black from the dirt and ash.

"Anastasia, come on. Say something." You refuse. You refuse to lose something else precious so soon after having found it. Not after losing everything else for this useless title of 'Hero' that your sisters wasted their existences on. "Please Anastasia. Don't leave me!" You can feel her weight slipping away, already her lower body is gone, taken away by the little light that was drawing her in.

Her arms are gone as well.

"You can't leave me! Please! I... I've got nothing. Everything I own amounts to nothing compared to you! Please!" You beg. You beg her not to go, not to leave you again with useless trinkets to keep you company, and a cold bed to greet you at night. Empty praises from the merely human soldiers, or the weak girls around you.

Not to leave you alone with the knowledge that you would have to kill your sisters.

"Please..." The last of her body breaks away from you, and you limply reach after it, your soul breaking to pieces as you watch. You stare as the light darkens even more, before the orb slowly changes shape.

It elongates and bends, hard angles, and a cruel edge forming from the remains of a kind heart.

The dark purple, almost black, blade of the sword hurts to look at. Red lines of fresh blood leak slowly to pool onto the ground. And from where you kneel in the dirt you can feel it's hunger.

Rei's eyes snap open and she rockets up into a sitting position with a gasp. The quiet darkness held at bay by Anastasia's soft glow. As Rei reached over to run a hand through Anastasia's hair to make sure she was still there, still breathing, the senior magical girl took a shaky breath.

As quietly as she could, Rei drew the covers off herself, and climbed from the massive king sized bed. Once free, she slowly made her way across the tent by Anastasia's light to where a small table was set up alongside a portable refrigerator and a box. At the table sat James, reading a book and using the light that suffused the tent.

"Can't sleep?" Rei doesn't respond, instead popping open the mall portable fridge and pulling out a can of soda. "Me neither." She pulls out a folding chair, and takes a seat across from the older man. "It's strange you know... how she glows when she's asleep. Richard and Michael spent the whole night debating weather or not we should tell her after we found out. Finally decided to keep it to our selves: a little Team GEAR secret."

Rei hums in reply... "I used to be afraid of the dark." Her voice is almost lost to the quiet, "When it got really bad, San would sneak into my room to keep me company. After the three of us joined the war effort, Ni and Ichi couldn't sleep without nightlights themselves... so the four of us wound up sharing a bed more often then not. San played peace keeper between us when we fought, and took care of us like mom used to... I was a failure of a big sister."

"Hoping that taking Nepgear under your wing like you have might give you a second chance?"

"I'm not that lucky."
She carefully ignores the feeling of hunger coming from deep within her, where the Fragment normally rested.

"Cheery Place," you say to no one in particular.

Goddess Gold - and by extension you – had been re-deployed to a more active location. According to Samael it was to draw the other Goddesses away from places with people. You suspect Samael was right as you gaze over the flattened, half-rotted trees and haze. Why would Unified Light set up a staging area in a nuclear crater other than to be in a remote place.

With the haze scattering the early morning sun, and all the nearby trees long since crushed, the world is nearly monochrome as you squint to try and pick out snipes. Team Gear had been assigned for this snipe hunt since before the sun rose, all the hours had revealed was that this place even made sunrises boring.

"Do you think we'll see a snipe now that it's light out?" You still have the feeling there's something your team isn't telling you.

"Snipes are very sneaky, even with the way they make themselves invisible they'll still stick to the shadows."
"Yeah, they'll be almost harder to see in the light. Keep looking though."
"It's almost better if you don't spot one. They may spy on us, but if you're good at spotting snipes you keep getting assigned on snipe hunts."

You turn a bleary eye on your less-than-helpful team as they expectantly watch an enchanted coffee pot.

"Uggh, this assignment sucks."

Ana bawled into her sisters shirt.

Her sister who was right in front of her. Her sister that Ni had revived. Her sister that had been crushed and ble-

NO! Her sister was right here. Sega was here.

"Shh, shhh. Its alright Nep, I'm here." her sister spoke gently as she rocked them both back and forth gently.

Of course this only made her start crying harder.

Somewhere in it all she knew she ended up crushing Ni in a hug while babbling apologies and thanking her at the same time. She even remembered seeing a ghost of a smile on the girls face, if a somewhat sad one.

In the end, she didn't stop crying for so long, she ended up exhausting herself. And for the first time in a long time, she was able to sleep with her sister again.

... And even in her sleep, her death-grip on G3#&^an tightened even as she felt its bloodlust in the back of head recede. It was the only thing keeping her from vaporizing her sister after all.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

The world was muted and grey.

The chaos of the battle around her seeming to slip past her. And indeed, no one was shooting at her.
(She ripped her earbud away as the muted voices yelling at her started to hurt/drag her attention away)
Sega was there.
(And it was Sega, she could see Ni over her sister's shoulder)
They had found out who she was and now she was paying for it.
(Rei was coming to stop it all, but Ichi blocked her)
She couldn't do anything. She felt like she couldn't even breathe.
(Her Weapon slipped from her hand and clattered to the ground)
And then her sister was hugging her, and smiling at her, and for the first time in months she felt whole, the world felt right.

"Sis..."

"Shh, shhh. Its alright Nep, I'm here." Ana trembled in her sister's arms, tears flowing down her face as she stared at her sister's smiling one, drinking in everything she could.

And then her sister grimaced and looked out at... at... the battle. Ana's head swiveled around to it as well, and she stared at the fight.

"I can't go."

Ana's head whipped to her sister and she croaked, "What?"

Sega was frowning and her eyes were sad, "I can't go over there, to the side you joined. So choose the one that'll make you happy."

And as Ana stared into her sister's eyes... she had no idea what to do.

"It can't be hopeless."

Two nights ago, just before the Indianapolis reprisal, a magical girl said those words. She'd joined United Light only two weeks earlier, and seemed to take it upon herself to proclaim our victory. If she wanted reassurance she came up empty-handed neither I or any of the new Team Gear responded.

Tonight I wait at a staging area near Louisville, remembering the way she shrieked while a Hell Beast tore her to pieces.

I never got her name.

It's been seven weeks since the loss of the first Team Gear, and I've written little but line after line of defeats. The order to maintain a journal was never rescinded, and it already feels like a habit, a way to rage at uncaring fortune that has doomed my home. The Indianapolis reprisal involved a dozen nukes to soften the defending forces up, followed by hundreds of tanks, thousands of men, and dozens of magical girls. For all of that it can only be described as inconclusive.

If burning our own cities to ash isn't enough to decisively dislodge the armies of Hell what chance does Earth have? I suspect this question will be on the minds of the next group they find for Team Gear.

During the battle I received healing and unasked-for advice from an angelic researcher. She claimed that I would soon be able to render judgment upon all who struggle for the Ashakic Pillar. I don't feel like a being that can change the course of the war, I've yet to engage in a fight where I wasn't at risk of being immediately killed by my foes. She made made feel uncomfortable rather than reassured. After I left her post it was flattened by a Spawn of Mayhem. I never got her name either.

Rei is getting worried, she puts on a brave face, but her demeanor towards me has changed. Where before she found my inexperience amusing or charming, now I am told. "You need to fight with all your strength." She's worried, about me if nothing else.

My power has kept up it's frantic pace of growth. If it keeps increasing in power and in rate of growth as it has, I may soon be able to withstand one of Rei's presence attack. Maybe.

I'm still getting stronger.

It can't be hopeless.

A corridor, but that does not describe the width. A hallway, but that ignores the height. Cathedralesque. The stone is black, glossy and smooth, but it comes to a low point in the middle of the way, a trough but deeper. You walk along, uncaring. The ceiling is flat.

Windows are equidistant from the ceiling and floor, but the night is dimmer than it should be, for the city shines a pale purple. You presume, having looked through none of them, judging only by the light cast on the ceiling from far below. They look like slits, glass unnoticeable until a flicker above glints oddly. All of them are on the right.

You are wearing a robe, deep purple and plush. It swishes over the stone, ever so softly. Nothing else does, not even your breath. It is quiet, so so quiet here. You keep walking forward on the slightly warm stone.

Forward. Always forward. Walking. The torch sconces are crystal, not wood. They emit no light. All is lit by the baleful glow of the city below. You keep walking forward, avoiding the shine of that midnight glow. It's
wrong. The stars are gentle. All blue, and green, and purple, but softer than below. They twinkle.

You walk. The way spirals inward, widdershins. There is something ahead and behind. You cannot see them, but you know. The one ahead does not move, but it's ahead of you. It is silent. Waiting. You do not know for what. The one behind rustles as you do, but it drags across the ceiling. It must be tall, to do that.

Mosaics curl on the leftward wall. They portray evil things. Vast monoliths, towering skeletons, and shambling silhouettes of darkness carved with eyes. They don't enter the concentric circle motif centered on the sconces. Neither does the horrid light. Behind is quiet now. You can't tell if it's there anymore, but it is. You walk away.

You wake, in your sister's bed, tired and confused. She snuggles you back to a dreamless sleep.

Your return to the waking world is slow. The tent is empty, and neither Team GEAR nor Rei are to be found.

The few memories you have of your dreams make you wish you could go back to sleep, but also leave a deep desire to never sleep again.

In the end you claw your way out of bed and get ready for the day.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

Right outside of the tent, you find James in full kit doing an exercise routine. One he pauses as you come outside and glare at him.

"Why the heck didn't anyone wake me up? It's nearly nine o'clock!" Ever since joining the Counter Force, you had never slept later than seven. So waking up at nine was a shock when you noticed it.

"We all saw what a mess you were when we went down for the night. So at Rei's suggestion we decided to let you sleep in today. So if you're angry, be angry at her. Besides, you're feeling better, aren't you?"

You glare at him, refraining from answering his question because you both already knew.

You split from James quickly after that, and gaze around your immediate area.

What to do today?

[]Training. You have no time to rest, and who knows when the next attack is due.
[]Investigate the War. You're curious how it's going.

(Character Update! Goddess Gold Acquires The Unknown Blade!)

Well. I'm sure that bodes well. [/sarcasm]

[x]Training. You have no time to rest, and who knows when the next attack is due.
[x]Investigate the War. Your curious how it's going.
[x]Michael and James heard of cake in the commissary. Sega's birthday was tomorrow if you remembered correctly.

That sword kind of reminds me of Soul Edge and if it's anything like it then we need to get it away from Rei as quickly as possible.

So now Rei has Gehaburn stuck in her soul or... wherever MG weapons are stored. The goddess slaying sword.
She and her sisters are known as the goddess four.

I predict !!FUN!! on the horizon.

anyway, sleep-addled vote analysis:
[]Training. You have no time to rest, and who knows when the next attack is due.
Training is always important. It makes us less killable.
[]Investigate the War. You're curious how it's going.
Information is good, I guess? Not really feeling it, compared to other options.
[]Sam's doing stupid shit. Might need to bail him out.
Sam's messing with his magic. could be interesting, could be eh.
[]Michael and James heard of cake in the commissary. Sega's birthday was tomorrow if you remembered correctly.
Feels option. Probably have a notable psychological effect, possibly regardless of whether we pick it.
[]Truth is holding a get-together between the Magical Girls on base. Might be interesting.
Interesting, probably good for social. probably one of the better options.
[]There's a new Independent visiting the base to set up communications, might be a good chance to meet a new face.
Is it perhaps Magical Girl Judgement Core? Maybe, maybe not~

So, I think I'll go with:
[x]Training. You have no time to rest, and who knows when the next attack is due.
[x]Michael and James heard of cake in the commissary. Sega's birthday was tomorrow if you remembered correctly.
[x]There's a new Independent visiting the base to set up communications, might be a good chance to meet a new face.

get a nice blend of grindmode, feels, and plothook.

That sword kind of reminds me of Soul Edge and if it's anything like it then we need to get it away from Rei as quickly as possible.
It's Gehaburn. So... not quite as bad? Still in "very not-good" territory though.

Today we party, for tomorrow they may die.

Training is always good, but we gain combat power from socials too.

True however the reason we bought all those skills now rather then just before combat was so we'd have a chance to actually practice with them. Plus Nepgear has a point here:
"I don't have time to slow down. Time to relax..." You move to put the book on brainwashing away. "Every time I leave the base, I run into something that's so far out of my league, only dumb luck lets me survive... and then there's the fact each time someone I cared about died. First my sister. Then Jessica and Richard. And now..." You fail to finish your sentence. Rei simply stands in the exit, watching you as you continue to put books away. "If I don't get stronger... who dies next?
every time she leaves she runs into crazy odds and someone she cares for dies.

While we shouldn't over-train, because that would be bad for Nep's mental well-being, if we skip out on training and someone dies again....

well it will be even worse for her then the last two times.

[X]Training. You have no time to rest, and who knows when the next attack is due.

See above for reasons.

[X]Truth is holding a get-together between the Magical Girls on base. Might be interesting.

Socializing is important. Especially since we'll likely be sent on missions with these Magical Girls.

[X]Michael and James heard of cake in the commissary. Sega's birthday was tomorrow if you remembered correctly.

Team bonding + Feels = Win!

Re-read Rei's Reflections section.

Tell me what you notice.
I did notice that Nep's core became it, but what I'm questioning is how they can both exist at the same time... (Nep's ability and Rei's weapon, that is)
Not to mention how Rei got it from a dream :p
Unless it's an ability that can transfer the weapon?
Is it perhaps Magical Girl Judgement Core? Maybe, maybe not~
It does say new independent, though it could always be another Core
