There's already a design project for composite armor. It's not explicitly linked to scaffold armor, but that's not really a concern, I think.

Turn Six Construction Results, Strategy Phase Begins
At one time he had had a name. It was unimportant now whatever it had been as the newly made warrior carved a bloody path across the stars. Going from war to war and pirate port to renegade world the newly minted Tellis reaped a tally of Blood and Skulls for his new master as he luxuriated in his new found freedom. As his personal infamy grew so did his ambitions, and for a young Astartes "unimportant" wars were a good spot to seize leadership and do deeds in the name of the Ruinous Powers.

The local devotees of Khorne had suffered reverses and betrayals so the first step had been to pull together the dispersed reaving fleets after personally killing their ultimate leader. Then cultists had been needed to be trained into infantry rather than targets. Incleon had needed to be contacted, the dispassionate hereteks taking their payment in flesh the same as they had any other leader in the region. Various minor warbands and reavers that had split off of the larger cults nosed into position to take advantage of the appearance and eventual success of a Fallen Angel gracing the area with their presence in the face of mere mortal soldiers.

First, the betrayal of Khorne's warriors needed to be redressed...

=====

Calavar had prepared. With the sudden concentration of quality construction among their foes it had been decided to release the fruits of careful hoarding for a concentrated response. Hulls took shape to accept the mass of Imperial Navy equipment, forming the best answer available to the quality of hulls that was considered "acceptable" by galactic powers.

Boarding defenses were brought up to code across the fleet in anticipation of actions against Ork and Traitor alike. War would be made, over Uniary.

=====

Lord Admiral: This campaign season will likely form a turning point in our local space. There are pockets of Traitors past Incleon that they can recruit in the future, but on the whole this will represent the balance of the hulls that exist in enemy hands at this point in time. Should they attack again it will be by stratagem or raiding rather than force.
The Khornates were not happy with our destruction of their local power base but are even less forgiving of their so called "allies" who fed their last wave into our grinder. They make war with both our defenders and the other Chaos forces in the system with little difference. Though even with being Khornates they now have leadership with the ability to keep their rabble in line. Our forces report sizable numbers of admittedly conscript grade infantry in the enemy ranks alongside disturbing concentrations of Possessed. It seems their foul patron has noticed our little bloodbaths...

Then there are the Orks. The Jawbreaka splinters continue to establish themselves, turning out new weapons of war and beating their newly impressed subordinates senseless. Legcutta... Is uncomfortably quiescent. An Ork possessing that level of firepower should not simply be watching events unfold.

Even so. Our highest priority is engaging the Chaos aligned mobile forces above and around Uniary. We can not abandon fellow Humans after giving them a reprive, even less our own ground forces who have served so capably. Intervention into the Human conflict to the East, while potentially useful in terms of salvage, are not mandated until Gehault presses the issue.

Central: The immediate vicinity of Calavar.
-Calavar: Homeworld and critical production center. If this is lost, you lose. Even successful defenses can result in a loss of production and morale. Current Defenses are estimated as "Light". [Owned by Calavar]
-Surrounding Calavar: Similarly cast adrift but not as well blessed by their leadership these worlds needed an affirmation of order and hope so that we could profit from their manufacturing capacity. [Owned by Calavar, provides 60M] [Currently Assigned: 1st Patrol Squadron, 4th Calavar Infantry Army]

North: The core of what was once and what may again be Lativa. Overrun by a myriad of small Ork forces in the wake of the final defeat after centuries of encroachment.
-Homna String Defense League (20LY): A defensive pact once stood among these worlds. Now it is broken between differing interests, from Traitor splinter forces to the leftovers of the repulsed WAAAGH!! Jawbreaka. [Ongoing Campaign] [Forces Present: 6th Crusade Infantry Army & 1st Calavar Infantry Army + 1st & 2nd Bridgehead Armies + 3rd Calavar Infantry Army + 1st Crusade Defense Army] [Dark Star forces present, including superheavy armor]
-Dark Star Alignment (20LY): Followers of a heretical version of the Imperial Cult based around the former Imperial Guard depot on the Feudal World of Calsum. Their ground forces and marines are well equipped, but they lack a true shipyard for the Adeptus Mechanicus in their territory refuse to aid them. Their military is recovering from the devastating war in defense of the Homnan worlds, building proper ships from the hulks taken en masse from the Orks. [Nominally Traitor]
-WAAAGH!! Gutrippa (40LY): A splinter of the destroyed WAAAGH!! Jawbreaka. Made up of the brutal enforcers left at "home" by the late Warboss. [Ork]
-WAAAGH!! Metalrenda (40LY): A splinter of the destroyed WAAAGH!! Jawbreaka. Lead and kept in line by the most promising Mekboy, now Mek Boss, of the horde.
-The Husk (40LY): A Hive World that had fallen to starvation and, subsequently, a Warp entity outside of the Four Powers. Now it has been consumed in turn by a race of psychically active predators, bodies and Warp taint alike. Refined raw materials are now pulled from it's surface as the Hives are dismantled, fueling the construction of new warships. [Minor Xenos]
-WAAAGH!! Legcutta (40LY): An Ork force that is said to use such "unOrky" tactics as ambushes, bombs, and regular Kommando forces and has been claiming poorly defended worlds among the southern portion of the core worlds from rivals and Humans alike. [Ork Held]
-Minor Xenos (40LY): Heavily built ships with severe appearances have clawed out a few systems for their own purposes. [Minor Xenos]
-Shrine World Lativa (60LY): Remembered as the first world colonized by Imperial citizens in the region this is the center of worship for the southern half of the Subsector. It's Adeptus Sororitas have held back any Ork forces that made landfall but all worlds nearby have been overrun by leaderless Ork hordes. Should a new Warboss arise... [Crusade][Forces Present: 1st Auxiliary Squadron + 1st & 2nd Crusade Assault Armies + 7th & 8th Crusade Guard Infantry Armies + 1st Aerial Combat Army][Ongoing Campaign: Regional Pacification]
-Hive World Octan (60LY): Notable for the manufacturing platforms in orbit, now turned to haphazardly producing guns for an endless stream of Orks. If even one could be taken and brought back to Calavar... [Ork]
-Forge World Laskin (80LY): The home Forge of Lexicalum and one of two "proper" Forge Worlds in the Subsector. The orbitals are lost to the Orks but the forge-cities still stand under cover of voids and arms. [Mechanicus]
-Forge World Grudan (80LY): The older of Lativa's Forge's, Grudan traces it's history back to the Long Night that sundered the galaxy before the Great Crusade reunited Humanity. The System Defense Force yet holds on, welcoming the sight of Calavan scouts as the rabble that surrounds them attempts to break their holy works. [Mechanicus]
-Hive World Narran (80LY): Once the capital of the Subsector. Now a cautionary tale. With the Defense Forces run ragged those with the most to lose paid all that they were in dark bargains and now pay the price in the flesh of their inferiors to hold back the occasional green tide. [Traitor]
-Core Worlds (80LY): A catch all term for those prosperous worlds that once were the pillars of Lativa and now are mostly ground under a green heel. Scrapships of the Orks are sometimes seen being destroyed by white, black, or yellow ships as some sort of campaign is being waged.

West: A string of fallen worlds shows the interest of the Ruinous Powers in the Subsector, surrounded by worlds they plunder for slaves and material as their corruption deepens.
-Civilized World Oprechna (20LY): A backwater off the shipping lanes that seems to... Be taking steps to correct that. The Warp shivers nearby as the currents are affected by Something. Something that can only be Heresy. [Traitor]
-Khornate Cult (20LY): Only newly come into their madness these Traitors retain most of their discipline and technical skill even as they war against all near them. Defenses are judged to be "Light". Under pressure by fragments of WAAAGH!! Legcutta. [Traitor]
-Bailafax (20LY): Once conquered and once besieged, Bailafax resolutely stands in defiance of the tide of frothing madmen. With the addition of Calavan granted weapons and fortresses, may she never falter in her vigil. [Owned by Calavar, provides 15M] [Forces Present: The Ashen Legion]
-Uniary (40LY): The fallen Hive World is in the grips of a massive three way campaign as Khornate forces attack the Nurgle/Tzeentch "alliance" and Crusade formations alike. Most reports put the number of Khornate ships in the mid double digit range and the combined combat forces landed on world are within shouting distance of the pre-Fall population. Psykers report ill omens here, something that the regular troopers make a mock of when made aware. [Forces Present: 1st Calavar Armored Army + 5th Bailafax Infantry Army + 2nd Calavar Infantry+ 1st & 2nd Crusade Siege Armies + Calavar Holy Shield Army + 2nd Crusade Defense Army ]
-Tzeentchian Cult (40LY): A rare example of the people in the Subsector who were most vulnerable to the temptations of Tzeentch. Defenses are judged to be "Moderate", mostly through the use of sorcery. [Traitor]
-Nurglish Cult (60LY): Previously a Civilized World, this group has at least one Squadron of Imperial Navy classes in good repair and use them to aggressively patrol their territory, regularly clashing with their red neighbors. Defenses are judged to be "Light", but with quality mobile forces. [Traitor]
-Forge World Incleon (60LY): To call this a true Forge World does the Mechanicus a disservice, but it was one of their distribution and lesser production nodes in the Southwestern portion of the Subsector. Now it sees regular visits from the lesser cults in the vicinity in order to buy bulk produced small transports and bears defenses in excess of what it previously did under Imperial authority, estimated at at least "Moderate". [Traitor]
-Fleet Bastion Kandahar (60LY): Once supporting the actions of Navy vessels rooting out piracy this minor fortress has been overtaken by Nurglish cultists. Defenses and mobile forces are not well understood, though the former should be at least "Medium" from repurposing existing defenses. [Traitor]

South: This is the shortest route to Imperial territory from Calavar, in terms of objective distance.
-Bagalog (20LY): An opportunistic warlord has risen to power over the Civilized World of Bagalog. Nearby worlds have been yoked or willingly come to the banner of it's leader, the new leader of a middling merchant cartel by the name of Loree Mulyran. The central location and continued pleas for assistance have attracted an Explorator to the region, providing technology and manufacturing to the upcoming merchant lord for oaths of power and riches. Defenses are judged to be "Light" with a small number of newly built hulls coming from a recently operational construction dock in orbit. Under attack by Gehault. [Independent]
-Outpost Station Lexicalum (20LY): An Adeptus Mechanicus outpost that is supplying and organizing a small stretch of Loyalist worlds against attack. Orkish raiders and Traitors threaten their shipping in hopes of acquiring war material for their own designs. [Allied with Calavar] [Currently Assigned: 2nd Patrol Squadron]
-Feral World Jurgenz (40LY): Taken by WAAAGH!! Gunbreaka this is now a fortress world. At least by Orkish standards. Current Defenses are judged to be "Moderate" (a double handful of small defense platforms anchoring a minefield and what are probably monitors of some description). [Held by WAAAGH!! Gunbreaka] [Sits on the Warp Current leading towards Imperial space and deeper into Gunbreaka territory]
-Minor Xenos (40LY): Smooth and flowing ships have emerged, wresting a handful of frontier worlds from Human and Ork alike. [Hashim]
-Civilized World Ungaunt (40LY): Once a lone beacon of civilization amidst a string of Feudal and Feral Worlds, Ungaunt is under siege as alien warships fly with impunity over the worlds of Humanity. The Hashim have clamped down on the region, fending off random Ork raiders and possessing control over at least a large portion of Ungaunt's surface. The fate of the Human inhabitants are as of now unknown. [Hashim]
-Civilized World Allient (40LY): Fallen to the perfidious greenskins Allient now provides for the raiding fleets sent out by it's barbarous overlords with it's maintenance platform of similar design to Calavar's. Defenses are judged to be "Light" and increasing slowly, but with mobile elements returning from attacks at unpredictable intervals. Under attack by the Hashim. [Held by WAAAGH!! Gunbreaka]
-Agri World Blackim (60LY): Once feeding the Human residents of the Subsector this world now provides fodder for the biological monsters of the Orkish horde. [Held by WAAAGH!! Gunbreaka]

East: The least affected portion of the Subsector due to distance from the main threats.
-Civilized World Yttreum (20LY): Having taken the lead over several Agri and Mining Worlds Yttreum eyes the Imperial deserters at Gehault with increasing hostility and began a crash industrialization program on their allied worlds. Under attack by Gehault yet remains defiant despite a tactical Life Eater deployment and non-negligible damage from conventional bombardment. [Independent]
-Stream Trade Triangle (20LY): A collection of worlds bound by trade ties and pacts into a rough oligarchy. Under increasing pressure from their militarized neighbors they have acquiesced to the demands, allowing the Navy deserters of Gehault access to their fueling and repair network and tactical command of what few combat ships they have. Both have taken damage from Bagalog and Yttreum raiders seeking to curtail the movement of their foes. [Gehault]
-Fleet Bastion Gehault (40LY): Several squadrons of the Imperial Navy continue their protection of their homeworlds where the Sector battlefleets do not out of the logistical base at Gehault. Several vicious punishments against rebellious worlds have been reported by local shipping, including at least one life eater bombardment, but they commonly range outside of their nominal territory in order to destroy Traitor raiders and collaborators. They have been stirred to action by the actions of their neighbors, seeing themselves as just in reestablishing the Pax Imperialis. [Gehault]
-Silent Stars (40LY): Rare is the Human ship, Loyalist, Secessionist, or Traitor, that returns from this region. Entry is unthinkable during these times.

Question! How do we upgrade a systems defenses? Do we just build defense stations and such, or if we ever want to get a heavy defense rating we need some kind of Star Fort over the planet, like a Ramilles?

Hmm. On the one hand, tons more Khornate ships, presumably mostly trash again. On the other hand, it's turned into a three-way brawl. I think the overall plan is unchanged: the first, second, and fourth squadrons, along with both torpedo squadrons and the first support squadron, take up the challenge in Uniary, while the third holds down the fort in the Homnan League. I'm surpised to see Latvia still counting as an active campaign, though; it sounded pretty finished. @DaLintyGuy, are there remaining Ork naval assets in the area we need to worry about?

A Ramilles? Oh, man, we wish. No, the orbital defenses we can actually build are tiny little Trench-class stations that operate on the scale of escorts. We also have the option of building ground batteries, which are more durable but tactically limited.

A Ramillies would probably do it at this scale, yeah. To get new defense stations requires a Design action for the hull, otherwise normal rules apply.

Ground defenses... I am less sure about how to balance granularity versus simplicity.

It's Orks. They keep making more, and if one group starts gaining momentum it becomes a Problem very quickly. Although you could easily get away with a Patrol Squadron there, I suppose.

Huh. A design action for a proper Defense Station might allow us to actually have a defense worth a damn in our core sector.

We aren't likely to get a Ramilles anytime soon, warp capable planetary defense fortresses like that are rare. But designing something big enough to mount real guns, and proper void shields, seems like something we should do at some point. Hopefully before Calavar gets attacked.

Given that this would allow us to swing our forces into other profitable ventures, I think that this might point in fact be the number one priority for the next research turn.

My God, there is soooo many things we have to do and so little time to do them in. >_<

Fuck, that Chaos Space Marine has clearly made the sector's Khornate cults his home and are beating them into shape instead of being near mindless hordes.

We need to break as many of them at Uniary as possible to delay the bastard's shenanigans.

So we *are* dedicating basically all of our mobile forces onto Uniary right?

Also, @DaLintyGuy do we have to specify shipping Yttreum the hulls we made for them or will it be done automatically?

First we'll need void shields that actually work properly on something bigger than an escort. Honestly, though, I think you need to scale down your expectations for both our forces and our opposition. This big battle we've spent the last 23 pages wrangling about? The confirmed warships there come to two frigates and two corvettes (and maybe also some wimpy commerce raiders from Incleon, although it sounds like they may have left, which would be smart, because they have absolutely no business in this furball). This is a tiny backwater subsector; even light cruisers are rare around here. We're looking at possibly launching one on turn 9 or 10. Our plan for next turn has "build some Trenches" penciled in, but even if we did design something bigger, we wouldn't be able to afford building it.

We might need to do a raid on Incleon to cripple their shipbuilding capabilities.
Yeah, we definitely do. Unfortunately, there are a lot of things we need to do. I'm feeling like Legcutta is going to be our most immediate concern after this. And, since he's noted to be a sneaky bastard, he probably has his crews wearing ninja masks to inexplicably make his ships stealthier or something. We need better sensors soon.

So we pull together the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Naval Squadrons as well as the 1st Torpedo Squadron (the 2nd Torpedo Squadron is required to be garrison of Lativa isn't it? If it isn't then 2nd torpedo squadron should be added in too) and strike the traitors with everything we can scrape together. Oh, and the Void Army should be readied for counter-boarding reinforcement ops to deefend our ships.

Second question then.

If Trench class defense latforms are psthetic, why haven't we designed a Strike Fighter platform? Some kind of orbital platform that fighter and/orbomber squadrons can base out of?

even if they get destroyed, so long as they launch there fighters first and even one still survives to act as a rearm and redeployment unit, a network of Hangar Platforms seems like something of genuine use in a defensive fight.

In that sort of scheme you'd be better off using ground based hangars like on Bailafax rather than hanging them in easy reach for destruction or looting.

You... you just described the Trench platform. They have a dedicated hangar slot, two other weapons, two defenses, and a utility slot. They're pathetic by the standards of people who can throw battleships around, but that doesn't describe anyone we've met.

Not... Really, although they will be able to pick up escort duties in their area of space if the deployment plan so chooses.
The Build Cap limits per turn investment, so 40M over three turns.
So, does this mean Lexicalum would be okay with us taking the Patrol Squadron there off (maybe for just one turn because of how important this upcoming fight is)? That would let us put it over our northern commitments and let us deploy more of our actual military to the decisive battle in Uniary.

They wouldn't mind, now that you have given them the time to build up their own force to do the same job.

Although you could probably ask them to help support in Uniary instead. Because Chaos.

Ooh, that'd help. Unfortunately, it'd also mean leaving one region unpatrolled (probably Bagalog), but that's probably worth it.

Huh, the ill omens around Kandahar moved to Uniary when the Chaos space marine did. I guess now we know what that was. Unless it was someone or something else he brought with him, I guess...

In exchange for your Patrol squadron, not in addition.

The CSM is not Nurglish (rather, he's Khornate) and only just arrived.

Right, I mean, if we took the 2nd patrol squadron out of Lexicalum we could cover Bagalog with them instead, but if we want them to help in Uniary we can't do that.

And... ooh. I guess it must be some new Nurglish force entering the region, then. Another warship, or maybe a powerful daemon?
