Part MDXCVII: Questing Knight
Questing Knight

Eleventh Day of the Twelfth Month 292 AC

To your relief the solution to the succession in the Stormlands that its new rightful lord reached was sensible enough, including neither throwing innocents to the mercy of Baratheon 'royal justice' nor some unfortunate revelation of sorcerous meddling that could so easily be attributed to you. The 'brothers' would return to Tarth together and where they would hand over Stannis' ransom, and from there you would part ways. Unfortunately that is where the good news ends. Rather than take your offer of guesting, the changeling has vowed to head out into the Feywyld like some knight of old to recover the true Renly Baratheon or die in the attempt.

"It would not be a lie at all you see, I would be merely playing out an abdication which the true Renly already consented to by his deeds," the subdued young man explains. "Gods know it took me long enough to persuade Stannis, but he does not want the stormlords killing each other and sending out their smallfolk to die over the succession, still less some Lannister perched in Storm's End."

There must be something fey about him, you think. That is just the sort of truth the faerie folk like to deal with, not to mention managing to persuade Stannis to at least stay silent while such a game is played.

"There is one other thing I would ask..." he adds hesitantly.

"Yes?" you prompt, intrigued.

"A word of introduction to the fey who wove you cloak, for doubtless the paths I know into the feywyld will be watched by unkindly eyes."

"Certainly," you agree. After a moment's pause you add. "Never think you are only a dream, or worthless for the task you set yourself. I have seen you bold in the face of danger, wise before the unknown, and resolute before such turmoil as not one in a hundred men could have endured."

"Thank you once more for kindness unasked for," he replies solemnly. "Sorely did your offer tempt me and should it stand once my task is done know that I shall not avoid this realm."

"Have you thought what you will do when you find the man born Renly Baratheon?" you dare to ask, careful not to show any of your frustration regarding the matter.

The changeling merely offers a sad shake of the head. "First I must see what state I shall find him in. Even Stannis did not task me to drag him back, only to find him..."

You wonder if it is care for his youngest brother's happiness, the desire to hold at last Strom's End, or some admixture of both that drives the man. For all Stannis Baratheon struggles to seem and act as though he had been carved of stone, the months that passed have taught you that this is not quite so.

What do you do in Tarth?

OOC: It was a near thing, but the changeling feels he must face the true Renly and at least try to get him to return. As for Stannis, well part of him wants to strangle Renly, but he is still his little brother so he wants to make sure he is safe.

This...
actually has potential.

I am for actively helping him, including giving him potions, possibly even a PfE amulet.
He either fails and vanishes, and we would not be worse off than now, or succeeds at at least finding Renly, earning a lot of XP in the process.
And being a Fey, thus bound to a story, I give him better chances than most would have.

I'm pretty satisfied with this resolution. Good thing we're hitting Dragonstone before Stannis has the chance to get back to it! :V He's going to be a bit grumpy about that, but if we just take the bones, take care of Tyget, and inform Selyse that her husband has been freed it'll just be mild grumpiness (and secret satisfaction at Tyget's fate).

I feel like we should talk to Brienne.

He might make it you know.
If he gets former Renly to retake his name, which of them would have broken a deal with a powerful Fey?
Former Renly alone or both?

It's not that I don't think he can succede, just that it won't bring a good end.

Delegating my voice to the Devil when it comes to corrupting paladin-children should be a good idea.

Delegating to the devil, yes.

Also, for all we know, Renly ends up as Durran and Renplacement as Elenei... because the Feywylds!

The Masterwork Cold Iron longsword we retrieved from the Dogai would be an ideal weapon for the Renplacement in the Feywild.

Is Cold Iron particularly effective against fey?

Also, maybe when he comes to us we could convince him to stay for a month or two just training as much as he can (to get a Fighter level or something).

As for arming and armoring Renly, let's not go crazy. We're going to make Oberyn/Doran pay for their equipment, so we shouldn't freely give too much to Renly. We have some mithral, but I'm not sure we should make fullplate (an aside, does Obeyrn wear light armor, or medium armor? If he wears medium armor, we could make him Mithral Fullplate to create a very scary Viper).

Wont that cause Fey to automatically view him with hostility? I feel like diplomacy and bargaining is key to making it on his quest. What other magic swords do we have? *goes to check*

The Fey don't have Cold Iron detection and it's no more deadly to them than steel is to humans. Any time he has the sword unsheathed and ready to use, the last thing he should be worrying about is offending some Fey.

I was going to make a joke about his second level in aristocrat giving him good odds against the common cat.
And now i wonder if Cat related murders are on the rise, a Grim consequence of a waxing Magic.

Okay. Since DP tried to reassure us that this isn't certain death, and since he'll be coming to us before going to the Orphne.

1. We can give him the Mwk Cold Iron Longsword
2. We can give him essential adventurer's gear (which he pays for)
3. Since this is in an effort to find Renly, Stannis as Lord Paramount can provide funding to bargain with the Fey of the Orphne Court for both a guide and a path to the Feywyld.
4. Before he goes he can spend time in Sorcerer's Deep training for his mission and having lessons in all the dangers he'll face, the fey he might meet, etc. We are one of the greatest sources of lore he has access to.

But we really should talk to that horse of his. If we're lucky then it'll be able to act as a guide for him.

What about a combat situation where there are otherwise neutral or friendly fey near him where they suddenly see he has a cold iron weapon? The +1 Fiery Hand sword might work better.
