Forge of Destiny(Xianxia Quest)

The Shambling Terror: In a strange series of incidents, outlying farms have been terrorized by an odd humanoid figure composed of mud and turf. Thus far it has only been seen lurking by hunters and woodcutters, but as it is not a recognized spirit, and appears to be of the third realm, a request has been made for the Sect to look into the matter. Investigate the issue, and resolve the situation. 25 points.

The next useful one is the… Black Loam Gargant," the blue haired girl grimaced a little as she looked down at the pages, which held an illustration of a vaguely humanoid mass of bones, dirt and stone standing next to a sketched humanoid figure which barely rose to its ankle. Of course the illustration seemed to indicate that the creator was meant to ride inside it?

There's more than a very good chance I'm being paranoid here, but if not we may have a problem...

What supports that notion? Keeping in mind that the Sky option is not just wind, per WoG

The talk about freedom. We've had a number of discussions about freedom up to this point, and how it's not a purely positive force when talking about Xianxia. We choose against the path of absolute freedom last time, and I think that was a wise choice. We're defined by the burdens we take on.

Wooops. I'll do an EPC roll in the next one

Going to fix stuff
You might also want to catch this reference, which mentions cultivating "back to peak".
She could cultivate back to peak and be back to breaking through by evening.

Wind had more meridians than the others and two arts, plus the previous bonuses. Stat caps will come off when you hit full 3rd.
This new bonus overwrites the old bonus, right? They don't stack?

[X] Into the sky, unfettered and free, to visit where ever she wished, at the time she wished

We can decide where to make our nest when we're older and wiser. For now, we have many places to go and many people to see.

So some thoughts on the update
Sun Liling had only two individuals with her, Lu Feng and Kang Zihao. Sun Liling was dressed more femininely for once, wearing a clingy green dress worked with floral embroidery. Unlike most gowns Ling Qi had seen here, the sleeves were not long and billowy, nor did the hem trail behind her.
So without Ji Rong with her I thought this was probably just before Ji Rong's interlude, but look at what Sun is wearing in the interlude:
"You look like you just came from a tea party," he responded dryly. She was wearing a dress, he'd never seen that before, it was a fancy looking thing, covered in flowery embroidery, with the sort of wide sleeves and trailing hem that the other women on the mountain seemed to prefer. He preferred those clingy silk pants she usually wore, if he was being honest.
So unless there is typo here (@yrsillar - was it supposed to be "WITHOUT the sort of wide sleaves and trailing hem..." in Ji Rong's interlude?) this is not the same dress, so my theory that Ji Rong's interlude was directly after her surrender is incorrect. Perhaps Ji Rong's interlude is the day after the surrender? I just can't see Cai letting Ji Rong go before the formal surrender. So I'm confused here. Which is why I think there may be a typo.
Kang Zihao had cropped his hair short and acquired a suit of polished armor from somewhere, with breastplate, bracers and greaves forged from pale white steel. He had also, Ling Qi noted sourly, reached Bronze, if only recently, going by the slightly erratic feel to his qi. Lu Feng on the other hand still wore plain dark red robes, with only thick leather bracers as a concession to defense. He was fully in the late second realm now as well.
Kang beat us to Third Realm, if only barely, the bastard :p. With how long it's taken him to break through I still think we'll leave him in the dust. Also turns out Lu Feng has made it to entirely late second realm. He'll probably be a contender towards for one of the bottom slots to get into the Inner Sect.

Sun Liling and the two boys with her came to a stop a respectful distance away, giving every appearance of not noticing Cai's train or the 'audience' of other Outer Sect disciples observing from a safe distance.

...Which was apparently a good hundred meters away. Ling Qi supposed that was fair.
I love how a hundred meters is needed to be a safe distance.

+100 Yellow Spirit Stones

Two green spirit stones worth of yellow stones, nice. We now have enough to buy 4 green spirit stones, which is pretty good. That's enough for our two sable light pill weeks to both have 2 green spirit stones used for them, assuming we can get to Appraisal Green. More on that later.

Base Value: 60-10(3rd realm)+5(Bonus)=55

59-5. 54 Success
Blood of the Father Sky was HUGE here. Wouldn't have gotten the success if not for it. But that's not the only time it came up big...

Value: 55

2-5. 0. Perfect Success
Perfect Success Bonus added to Breakthrough bonuses

We got out Perfect Success Bonus due to Blood of the Father Sky, and how it subtracts 5 from the roll. I mean, rolling a 2 might have gotten us that bonus or at least a lesser one, I don't know, but I assume that getting a roll of 0 (impossible without drugs) is what got us this. So yea, both breakthrough drugs worked great, and without them we would have only gotten 2 successes out of the 5 rolls we had.

"I cannot believe you truly suffered not even a single backlash when breaking through to second realm," she said, incredulously.

"Was easy," Ling Qi muttered, closing her eyes, bright light still hurt her eyes. "Didn't know it would hurt so much."
Haha, Ling Qi's luck flummoxing other characters is always the best.

"Sorry," Ling Qi replied, the sound of her own voice made her giggle a little. It was simply funny for some reason. Li Suyin was really good at this. She would have to never mention it though. Meizhen would probably be mad. "Books… books said it would hurt, but not how much."
While Meizhen SHOULDN'T take a massage from Li Suyin the wrong way, it's probably for the best not to mention it to her. I do note that Ling Qi is actually enjoying being touched by another person. That's very rare for her. Can anyone remember another time?

Ling Qi sank into blissful slumber. When she awoke, she was back home in bed, with Zhengui hunkered down in her doorway, watching the door intently. She could sense Meizhen out in the living room as well.

As Zhengui noticed her awakening he practically shot to her side, his two voices babbling over each other in concern. She had to stop him from trying to climb her bed and breaking it by sliding off to wrap her arms around his stubby neck and murmur comforting words.
Zhengui is the best.

"...I'm not sure where we get that many bones, but that seems pretty great," Ling Qi said, studying the text around the illustration. "What's the catch?"

"The upkeep costs would be unsustainable," Li Suyin sighed. "Without the… sacrificial methods, described in the rest of the book, it would take roughly fifty yellow stones just to activate for a minute or so… I am also quite certain that it would take a third realm cultivator to control at all."

"...Let's leave that as a maybe for the tournament then," Ling Qi muttered. Would that be allowed? "Can we adapt any of the bad ones to be more useful?"
Fifty yellow stones for a minute? I don't know if that's worth it. That's a whole green spirit stone. Still, worth looking into, especially if we swear to Cai and spirit stones become less scarce.

As her awareness was subsumed entirely into her pulsing qi, she found herself within a vision. In it, she sat on a high cliff overlooking a lake. Below her stretched a misty vale, silent under the light of the moon. The vale was a lively place, with a lush wood at its shore, she could see a bonfire under it's eaves, and she was sure her friends were waiting. A little village sat at the opposite shore, the tiny lights casting long shadows, and in the center of the lake sat an island, tall, narrow and mountainous, stretching high toward the clouds as if to grasp the silver moon, from it came a familiar tune.

Ling Qi found herself standing, looking over the vale, and was filled with the urge to move.

Where did she go?

[] The little village, full of little people and shadows that would keep her safe.
[] Toward the moonlit peak and its unseen players, calling her to join the serenade.
[] Into the forest, full of life and joy. She did not want to leave her friends waiting.
[] Into the sky, unfettered and free, to visit where ever she wished, at the time she wished.
Lots of people have already analyzed the choices, so I won't bother. They do seem more complex than I thought my first browse through.

Qi Bonus: +10 Bonus Qi
Meridian Bonus: Additional Heart, Spine, and Arm Meridians opened(Does not affect target number)
Spiritual Bonus: Auto successes to spiritual and qi increase to 5
More Qi and more auto successes to spiritual and qi increase are totally expected. The meridian bonus is rather nice, if totally unexpected. Heart, Spine, and Arm are our three locations with the most meridians opened, so it makes sense which got extras. The one annoying thing is that the next meridians we need are Leg (to train SCS) and Head (to train AM), and very possibly Lung after that (to equip AE if we get AE 3), but those are the breaks

Art bonuses
Wind: Wind arts require fifteen fewer successes per level after initial mastery, Initiative bonus increased to +3.

Dark: Ling Qi receives a two die bonus against all attempts to dispel darkness arts. Ling Qi receives a 2 die bonus on all offensive clashes using darkness arts

Imperial Eight Bonus: +5 auto successes to training imperial element arts

Wood Bonus: Gain one additional health box
There aren't as many Art bonuses as I was expecting. In particular I'm kinda shocked that Water didn't get a bonus. We have 3 water meridians, same as Wood, after all. But perhaps that got subsumed by the Imperial Eight Bonus? That's a rather nice bonus after all. And the Dark bonus is very great for us, our FVM dice are looking competitive again with Zhengui's bonus, the rebalancing, and this giving +6 dice total. We still need to get an art that buffs spiritual offense before the tournament, but with the recent gains and no war ongoing I think we can put it on the backburner a bit.

General Bonuses
Perfect Success Bonus: Begin Early green with 100 successes.
That is VERY nice. That's almost exactly 2 actions worth of successes with our previous Spiritual dice. From the frontpage update it takes 600 successes to get Appraisal, so with 500 more successes to go that's about 10 weeks to get to Green Appraisal - probably less as we'll probably get better dice after all. Very doable, we should get it at the end of week 47 even without better dice if we do one Spiritual roll a turn, and again probably a turn or two earlier. That leaves plenty of time for 2 sable light pill weeks with 2 green spirit stones used each week. We might even be able to get FVM 7 if we can hurry Spiritual along a good amount using EPC bonuses and then use those bonuses on FVM. As such I think it's worth it to go for Green Appraisal.

Bronze appraisal, on the other hand, I'm not sure of. We're probably going to only go after Bronze breakthrough slowly, and it's probably impossible to get another Perfect Success Bonus. That all adds up to taking too long. And getting a physical to appraisal as well doesn't help much with cultivation.

Third Realm Bonus: Domain Attribute unlocked
And THIS is something totally unexpected. Especially as it's listed as an Attribute. Will we get dots in whatever we choose as are domain, much like we get in Dexterity or Manipulation? What will those dots mean? We'll have to see.

Finally, for the dogs that didn't bark, I'm rather shocked we didn't uncap attributes or skills. From Yrsillar in thread, we'll unlock them when we hit Bronze though. We unlocked them with only Yellow last breakthrough. We also didn't get a bonus dot to put towards a social/mental attribute - although without uncapping attributes this makes sense.

We also didn't get anything from EPC, which is rather annoying. Perhaps it's such a long art that we haven't mastered it enough to get any bonuses? In other words, maybe we'll get a bonus when we breakthrough to the Fourth Realm (assuming we've taken EPC as far as we can in Green), but don't here because even though we've taken EPC as far as we can in Yellow it just has so far to go it isn't considered mastered.

No Flying Swords yet, we'll probably have to get Bronze to unlock them.

Finally we didn't get anything from our ??? Bonus. It's always been mysterious, and just continues to be mysterious here. We might get it with Bronze, but last time we got it with Yellow only.

with the exception oft he first, all the options appeal to me, but I really like our wind theme.

[X] Into the forest, full of life and joy. She did not want to leave her friends waiting.

Might have to vote tactically later, but let's keep the dream alive.

That is not how it works though... cultivation and breakthrough forms a basis for the character and how she wants to go forward. You are picking the 'never settle down' option. The mindset she will come to realisation about is that she does not want to settle down... ever. Sky is not the 'do not commit right now' option it is the 'commit to never committing to anything option'.

Only not? Every step along the path we're discarding part of our mortality, our ability to choose. Every commitment we make here is permanent, it says someone about what the nature of the Greater Spirit Ling Qi would ascend into. Each of the paths is a priority, and will effect to some extent how we see others.

I sort of group them like this.

Antisocial
  • The village is full of marks to use and hid among.
  • The sky is empty of others.
Social
  • The Mountain is full of secrets to win from spirits
  • The Campsite is with our friends, guarded by our Spirit Beast.
It's why, while I consider Friends better, I'm not bothered by Moon.

So yea, both breakthrough drugs worked great
Yep. Our die rolls really favored our drugs.

With 5 rolls, the chance of Blood of Father Sky saving a breakthrough are around 5*.05 = .25, so 1/4. The odds of forcing a prefect breakthrough (which hadn't occurred to anyone before...) are also 1/4. We got both of these bonuses.

Milk of Mother Earth worked as expected, but because we failed the reroll it pulled double-duty on preventing XP loss.

So our drugs had an unquestionably good day to show off their performance.
