I'd rather swap out the Ma girls for Suyin (It won't do any harm to ignore them for one more week, until we have more time on our hands, and we need to keep working with Suyin to get all the goodies in the Pale manual) but at least it has all the most important minors I want. Lack of Cai action in the other plans is a big no for me. We need consistent action with Cai if we want to befriend her.

I'm not really in favour of culling our build and phasing out either music or archery. Both are things Ling Qi enjoys. Archery also needs to stay long ranged, because we have other arts for mid/short range. Ideally, we'll find some kind of musical archery art. If not, the pure wind successor for FSA sounds like it would work well with us.

So. Instead of talking about whether we want archery or music, (I want both) let's talk about elements instead. I think that's a better way of cohering our build. We're definitely specialising into Darkness and Wind. The question is, should our third element be Water or Wood? We have more arts involving water, but TRF was specially picked out for us by an Elder, and it's just so good, I'm loathe to give it up. Also, I like having at least one element in common with our baby bro.

Thoughts guys? Which do you favour? Wood or Water?

It seems like the Cai action is what's keeping people away from your plan, would you be willing to swap out the Bodyguard Minor for the Cai Minor?

It's hard to say right now. I feel that we'll probably want to experiment a bit during the early stages of green next year to see what they offer.

I lean towards water though, because I think that combined with wind it's a good combo, and could potentially do things like weather control music and fun field effects.

(And there's no reason to be overly attached to TRF. Yes, it's good, but there are almost certainly lots of other good arts out there as well that we can replace it with once we're ready to move up to the next level. It's not like wood is the only thing that provides good defensive support, or armor buffs, or poison resist. Heck, we know from Ice Wraith that Ice can do all of those things. The Zhengui issue is, of course, separate from this.)

We could just as easily pick up arts and talismans that boost Darkness, and continue using FVM that way. We already have more Darkness arts and I don't see further darkness conflicting with any of our potential builds. In the short term, an increased focus on darkness could buy us some time to explore the possibility space further.

This isn't really the case. We need arts that help our arts. Talismans are a part of this, but what our tutor suggested was learrning more arts that fit with current arts into a coherent build. It's synergy from skills that do similar things in ways that help each other. This isn't darkness, but building a strategy and tactics. In music's case, this means getting arts we can use while using FVM (say for flute attacks) and arts that help FVM (say, spiritual boosters).

Element isn't that key, and we've been told 2-3 times now to go more than one.

Wind/Dark are pretty locked for the foreseeable future. Archer guy suggested water (because he does have a sense of our build) but wood would also be a viable third.

FVM was Darkness before it was ever music. Darkness is what ties SCS and FVM together, the common thread of our core techniques.

Commonality isn't what matters most though. It's mutual reinforcement.

Discounts matter, but they don't matter as much as synergy. Passives that all help with the same stuff, which is also what the arts techniques are for. Skills that influence your other skills or cover a gap in those skills.

Does that phrase make logical sense to you ?

Bottom line is, yes we need to focus on music if we want to best use FVM.
The whole Zeqing event pretty much proved how important "music" is to the technique.
 
Hmm. So... how long do you think it would take to set up contingencies? And how soon do you think Sun will be back to gank us? Because now I think about it, I'm getting really worried about that surprise-ganking from a more fully prepared Sun.

Also, we've got a few minor favours from Cai stored up right? Maybe we could spend one to ask for her help in locating that 4th Argent art... Even if I wasn't a little conflicted about Fu Xiang's favour, I'd rather do it right before the tournament so we can steal the finished product instead of just messing with the materials. And if we did do it right before the tournament, that's certainly not enough time to ask him to find and let us train the 4th argent art.

Alas, I am not. I personally don't believe that we need to spend an action a week hanging out with Cai in order to figure out if we can be friends with her. I don't think that we can be friends with her within the span of 5 weeks, but I do feel that with 3-4 minors with her we will be able to figure out if we can become friends.

Alright, so I have some of my own opinions about the flute/archery how do we make this work discussion. I believe that we should thank Archer dude for the advice on how to build an archery focused build based upon what we have currently, and then do the exact opposite and go for archery that is Long ranged or Super long ranged. Is this possible? Maybe, maybe not. I don't know exactly how archery arts stack or if we could even get a spiritual yin based archery art that is designed for super long ranges, however, I will present my argument below. It will be long and spoiled, but I will bite the bullet an add a Tl;dr message at the bottom unspoiled.
First off, I will propose, again, what this argument is meant to support. This argument will be based on the belief that archery and music are not mutually exclusive, and in fact that they can support each other. Furthermore, the argument will be made that getting long ranged archery arts is the best way to leverage Ling Qi's natural abilities in archery and music as well as provide a large strategic advantage in any "war" that Ling Qi would be a part of.

To begin, it would be necessary to define a couple of the key terms that will be used in this post. Notably, Strategic and tactical. This is not an argument for whether these definitions are the correct definitions, and this section is devoted to clearing up misunderstandings and create a uniform understanding of what this post refers to when it uses those terms. Strategic refers to the creation or destruction of advantages or disadvantages before a battle begins. Tactical refers to the creation or destruction of advantages or disadvantages during a battle.

This distinction is important, as it helps to clarify what is meant when this post refers to a character as either a strategic asset (Fu Xiang) or a tactical asset (Ji Rong). Or, in the case of Ling Qi, a mixture of both. The reason why Ling Qi is a mixture of both strategic and tactical assets is that she can create/destroy advantages and disadvantages before a battle even begins as well as during the battle. Her strategic side comes into play during stealth and larceny missions in order to scout out the opponent, steal critical supplies or information, or do some other dastardly thing in order to destroy the opponent's advantages while creating advantages of her own. Her tactical side comes into play due to the variety of ways Ling Qi has in boosting up allies and debuffing the enemy. (notably FVM, TRF, FZ)

What this means for Ling Qi, however, is that she can be the sole determining factor in whether a mission is a success or a fail (see Sun Liling's fortress assault) and ideally, we want arts that can support this quality of Ling Qi's. So, how does super long ranged archery support Ling Qi's bid for tactical and strategic supremacy? Well first, we need to look at what Ling Qi does really well tactically, and that is the creation of a domain in which everything that is "hers" is buffed to exceedingly good levels while everything not "hers" is debuffed into the ground. In other words, the creation of a domain. (See FVM, FZ, TRF, AE, and other heart arts)

There is one critical flaw with domain control people, and that is they need to get people to be inside the domain that they control. For Ling Qi, this is not a particular problem as most people seem to fight within her domain already. However, we don't have very many options to force a person to come into our domain of control other than running at them very fast. This has a couple of problems, first off this gives them the opportunity to turn around and engage us first, where we want to be the first ones to engage. Secondly, it allows them, if they are clever enough, to choose ground to fight us in of their own choosing. Now, before we got the music meridian, I would have said that we would be at a significant disadvantage in a howling blizzard which dashes our FVM before we can really get it going. I now, admittedly, have difficulty in thinking of unfavorable ground for us to fight in, but I can think of some ground that would significantly favor us. (a field of stone spires comes to mind).

With that in mind, what does archery do to help us establish our domain of control? Well, like every long ranged piece of equipment, archery helps dictate when and where a battle will take place. If the example of artillery may be used, the person with artillery forces the other person to either A) stay where they are and die, B) retreat, or C) engage the person with artillery on that person's terms. What this means for us is that with super long ranged archery, we can force a person to choose one of those three options. (unless that person also has super long ranged archery, in which case the 4th option, duel at long range, becomes an option for the both of us).

This also solves the problem of attempting to use music and archery simultaneously for a fight as we simply do not use the bow when the individual enters the area of which we will begin asserting control. While any of the options would be available to a person, our speed makes running away from us a tricky, if not an impossible, proposition while standing still and taking the arrows is not a logical winning condition for our opponent. Archery would be used to draw an opponent into a fight, while music would be to create the domain of control that we love fighting in. In this method, we will be able to force our targets to confront us without having the risk of chasing them down. This ability to force a fight also leads back to the earlier subject, strategic and tactical uses.

By forcing an opponent to fight us, we will be able to choose the ground that the fight is on, and perhaps even prepare the ground beforehand with formations or find an appropriate environment where our strengths come out in full force while the opponent's weaknesses are enhanced. In this way, we would be making strategic decisions in order to best realize our chances at winning the battle while forcing the opponent to abandon their strategic position to deal with us, both creating an advantage for us while destroying an advantage of the opponents. Tactically it helps us by forcing the opponent to waste time and qi reaching us before they can deal with us, creating a disadvantage in them by forcing them to fight us with lower qi and possibly lower health.

However, this means that we won't be using our bow when our domain is set up. This reduces the need to juggle weapons around and allows us to simply wear down the opponent with debuffs and music. While this would remove our one big finisher, AC is providing an excellent melee tool to use for dealing direct damage to a target within our domain reducing our need for a strong damage dealer as a finisher.

While going for super long ranged archery does have it's drawbacks (ie, inability to use archery for a strong finisher) the ability to dictate where a fight will be, while also solving the juggling of weapons problem that trying to use both music and archery in mid/close range, more than make up for such drawbacks. If asked whether we should consider archery in this sense a primary priority or a secondary priority, I would answer secondary. A super long ranged archery art would be meant to supplement and enhance a domain controllers ability to force people to enter their domain and thus entrap people in the territory of their own choosing.

Tl;dr
Ling Qi is both a strategic and tactical asset and would benefit from having an art that can enhance both of these qualities. Ling Qi, however, is much more comfortable in creating domains of control where everything "hers" is buffed while everything not "hers" is debuffed. Super long ranged archery can be used both as a strategic weapon and as a tactical weapon. It also forces people to either retreat or engage her within an area where Ling Qi can create her domain. In this way, it allows Ling Qi to chose the time and place of a battle, while also solving the issue of trying to juggle the use of archery and music in mid/short ranges.

Special Element, Music unlocked. Music based arts are no longer affected by sound based defences or deafness as long as at least one meridian is attuned to Music.

Specialty II Woodwind Instruments, unlocked. When using your specialty you are treated as being one cultivation level higher in clashes.

Ditto. That thing is manna from heaven. Stealth successes, help out our friend, and we get to keep all the loot. Loot that could quite possibly include pills that aren't available for sale.

I'm open to persuasion on the highsun pill. I put it in there because I think it's time to start banking some physical cultivation rolls. Throwing the grinning moon dice at AE because it's a lock to get us to level two. We're close to some sweet stuff on formations, so I see getting to advance it with a minor action as a gift. Xiulan, Cai, and Zeqing are nearly mandatory, and everybody seems to want the Meizhen minor.

I like our new minions, but they'll still be there next week. I put the windblown snowfield training in with Meizhen since we've already shown her one site revealed by Zeqing. It's not quite as much in her wheelhouse as the black pool but it's still a pretty sweet site so I figure we can at least drag her out there once to check it out.
 
I think the main reason we're not doing Fu Xiang this week is because we know he's occupied with Meizhen at the moment (which may not be true next week) and also, we need the mission not just for sneak successes, but also for sect points for future tutoring if we want to breakthrough ASAP.

CRX+Fu Xiang(3) gets my vote.
Li Suyin might speed up things with the Pale book formations and maybe the Argent Liquid. Knowing what that thing does before breakthrough attempt seem preferable.


I don't like the Meizhen minor, but apparently everyone want to push her on something she asked us not to... :(

Yeah, similarly minions more than anything benefit from us doing them now to establish a relationship with them.

In addition, putting blessing into AE instead of FZ is terrible. We can master FZ, and that will be good for our wind bonuses. AE? Well, we're not getting AE3, and we can probably get AE2 from stealth before breakthrough - but if we don't then it's no big deal. FZ is a much bigger priority here. AE is optional extra.

If I had any faith in Ling Qi's subtlety at all I would want to try to find out if any of the targets are friends with Su Ling or Suyin.

FZ is two full training sessions + change away, unless my math is wrong. We can put the GM bonus into it this week or next and it won't affect when we get it. Putting it into AE gets us a new level of art this week.
