Perhaps we should name our characters with english words and names too. Nancy Karen. Pointy Ear Lady Number Two.
More to the point, in context of the quest, Resolute has no meaning while Salnas has a meaning. Arbiter has no meaning while Zarayet has a meaning.
Now, that is a ridiculous argument, though I would like for less apostrophe abuse from some of the alien names... it gets annoying and is difficult to keep in mind who is who.
Then again as Star fleet head honcho we do not deal too much with too many people, omakes notwithstanding, and given that the times we assign a posting, we do it on an evaluatory position, we can take time, go back and forth and live with some of the unpronounceable nightmares we use as names.
Hell, I rarely remember our captain's names and need to search who is captain of who and even then it isn't easy.
As for Salnas having meaning? it has? oh, the ship we called salnas has done things but as for having meaning... not for me it is pointless and while it is a nice way of trying to represent a mutlispecies polity, we always run into the problem of using our alphabet to try and represent words that aren't written in our alphabet.
You saying Resolute has no meaning is silly, sure, we have no Starfleet ship named thus but before we used salnas... did it had a meaning? no. does it has a meaning? only insomuch as the ship salnas but that is not a good argument.
The issue is why do we name ships? to distinguish it from others is the most obvious answer. we could use the NCC number, but that is a hassle and names are easier to remember.
to us, the players.
And ultimately that is the important part.
So, using a phonetic representation in our alphabet of an alien name is... complicated, might help to stand out a name or two, but sooner or latter, we are going to have a lot of names that mean nothing to *us* and will make keeping track of things more difficult.
Of course, our current naming schema isn't good, by and large is a mess and all over the place (except with the Rennies, more or less) but some names are even canonical, I'd personally suggest we slot types of names depending on the hull class, much like the USN schema (if a name, the ship is a destroyer, if it is a city, a cruiser and a state a battleship)
