Forge of Destiny(Xianxia Quest)

Yay, so glad we didn't waste time going to Li Suyin and Su Ling during the thunderdome. It was clearly much more important to go to the market and Bai Meizhen.
Yay.

[][breakthrough] To ensure that none would dare strike at her or her roots in the first place

I much prefer this to the lesser version and even more to both 'wings' options. 'Wings' and freedom are just such a stereotypically optimistical western thought, that I could barely stand it if a Chinese street urchin whose friend has just been hurt chose them over raw deterrence. I mean, we're choosing where Ling Qi is going and not where she is coming from, but the 'wings' options are such a departure from Ling Qi's roots in the first place...

I mean, not only is the base culture all wrong for the 'freedom' fetishisation, but the time period of Xianxia is always the sort of medieval structure that doesn't view freedom with the nigh-religious furor of modern Western nations.

To be fair, the Wings are just saying "I want to do what feels right, but I don't want to abandon what i care for to get it"

Pretty sure Meizhen would have had a big setback if we hadn't checked on her, as would Xiulan if we hadn't started with her. I think the pattern was this.

The friend you start with you can give a good end.
The friend you can go to second will have a bad thing, possibly made worse if you go to the market first.
The friend you didn't go to got screwed.

Hmm mm we can't bind the wolf at the moment and by the time we can I feel like he's gonna be scooped up. Secondly I was kind of hoping for our spirit beast to be less generic... I mean wolf. Really?

This is xianxia so they have cool weird shit like flaming monkey spirit or 1000year old moonglade elk and shit.

Plus we have some weird wind thing going on and that ??? Mystery bonus.

I honestly would like a bird spirit , maybe an owl or large night eagle or something. Hell even some cool wisp or something would be nice

Also for votes , we should focus on breakthrough , cai deffitnitly.

We train Int so much though with actions we take since we'll no doubt be using the Archives. I'd much rather go for Composure, Resolve, or Wits, which we train much less but which, if they come up in a roll, we'll want to succeed on. @TheLastOne

For the breakthrough, what does this even mean (to ensure her wings could carry any weight)? What is the weight in this metaphor - the roots? What does it mean to carry roots?

I pretty much understand the other breakthrough ideas, but this one is a little weird.

I'm worried this sudden change in attitude and want for revenge might consume Suyin and set her on the path of "Cultivate forever and ever" which the Elders warned against.

Han Jian might have good advice for dealing with that, seeing as he also experienced a complete 180 in personality and goals.

Ok, strategizing time! Goals and motivation question.

Ling Qi is about freedom and enjoyment but is also worried about abandoning connections and friends, families and responsibilities. Removing the shackles takes care of the first but not the second, punishing or being strong enough to prevent doesn't help with the first requirement. By being able to bring her roots up with her into the sky, she is able to protect them from harm, and maintain her freedom of movement. So I would have to go with the option that allows us to carry as much weight as we wish.

I cried when I read the update. It sucks, it will always suck, but we have to accept the consequences of our greed and move forward. So we need to train with Li Suyin, right now I'm not all that concerned about Li Suyin not having a marital bent, but perhaps we can take her with us for a visit with mother, to show Li Suyin what a cultivator should be protecting.

As for plans:
Breakthrough to silver
Breakthrough to silver
Train with Li Suyin
Train with Han Jian and his group
Go with Bai to the meet
Cultivate something.

As for what the breakthrough vote should be
[X][breakthrough] To ensure that her wings could carry as much weight as she wished

It's to be so powerful that having friends or obligations doesn't tie you down and hold you in place, but that you can take it with you. It's saying you want it all. You want your friends, and you want to achieve mastery and wander freely. You, Ling Qi, want it all.

It's the most arrogant, prideful, and ambitious choice on the list. It's saying you're aiming to be so powerful you can have your cake and eat it too. As such, it's a beautiful hubristic choice. It's not who we are... but it's about who we're aiming to be.

Aim far and reach high. If you fall short, at least you did something interesting.

I understand it to be strong enough to fly(do) wherever(whatever) she wishes to while still being able to take whatever she wishes -her roots, her friends- with her, or at least not being impaired by the metaphorical weight.

Honestly? That will probably be a serious help to her.

Because she finally woke the fuck up. She was relying on people being nice to not steal her shit and beat her opprosed friend.

This? This gave her a goal. Not some dreamy "get strong", "be happy" sort of goal. A very clear, very concise, and well within sight goal- Beat the fuck out of that bitch, and heal her eye.

She wants to pursue martial aspects of cultivation, and a has true challenge for her own healing focus. She has something very personal on the line now. She wants to beat that girl's face in, no, more than that, she wants to destroy her, and that's a purely selfish motivation. She wants vengeance. And that's excellent for her. She needs that kind of ambition in order to not fall by the wayside.

And she has just the neccessary tools to fix her eye. No greater motivation than that, there is no vague threat, the damage is done and is more tangible than any other could be. Now it's up to her.

This will allow her to flourish.

By the way, you convinced me, and I've switched to composure.

I agree with you. I'm not happy about the cost that she had to suffer and wish that there was something else that could have happened, but if I am glad that she now knows just how dangerous it is and has a concrete goal to focus on. This does not at all mitigate the sympathy for the pain she suffered or the sorrow at the thought that there might have been another way.

By the way @yrsillar, you might want to switch the Character Sheet over from Threadmarkes to Informational, since we page over to it all the time and it's buried at the top. Also Tutorial, but I think tutorial is a little outdated at this point so it's not as big a deal.

I've got a question to the enthusiasts of the 'Wings' options. Where are the wings headed? What's the destination? Wings are a method and not a goal or concrete thing. Freedom is defined by the lack of something. So what 'freedom' is satisfactory?

However, I'd prefer to clarify this; @yrsillar, do we keep the progress to the next dot when we pick an attribute to add a dot to? So, if we pick Intelligence to level up, would we still be 10 towards dot 5, or would we be at the start of dot 4?
Incremental progress will be maintained.

We really only need to cultivate AS this week (along with the 2x breakthrough), but the train with Li Suyin option includes a cultivate action (like last week). FVM would be a nice bonus if we train with Han Jian's group, but I'm willing to hold off on that until next week since we're basically spending 3 cultivation actions already (I count breakthrough as cultivation actions).

That leaves 3 slots for social and/or jobs. Of those, I'd say Xiulan's action is time-sensitive (since it's a celebration of Yellow) and moves toward at least reducing tension between the groups. I also like the Han Jian advice action because he does seem like the most grounded of our group - and I'd like to reinforce our friendship considering we've been neglecting him (re: spending AP on him) and he's our lowest "friend" dot wise now.

Other than that, while I'd like to help Meizhen, I think the other Meizhen action is a bit more time-sensitive (given it's held this week) and I'd rather put off helping her until next week when we're (hopefully) both Yellow and Silver.

Job wise, at least WRT uniques, I'd think holding off instead of jumping straight into the fire from the frying pan. Although actually, we may be able to cheese the moon lily one with Trackless Movement, I guess.

... And as usual, I'd really like to send money to mom and look at the tokens, but I think the other options are a bit more urgent. :(

To think choosing would be even harder without that 6th action from getting to Yellow...

Yes, we were in a situation with few good possible outcomes.

Starting with Xiulan was still probably the right choice.
Had we started with Bai we would have been a spectator at best, collateral damage at worst.

With Suyin - we would have prevented her learning a very necessary lesson.

We do not know if not going to the market would allow us to visit all three of our friends, and this is the only thing I regret - that we went to the market.

Afterwards - had we not been with Bai, she would have been in far worse situation, I think.
Had we gone to Suyin, we possibly could have prevented the worst.

But well, the situation could have been worse, so...

I would have to argue strongly about Freedom being the lack of something. Freedom is the ability to choose the path you wish to take and the method by which you take that path. Tyranny is the lack of freedom, the restriction of the ability to choose, Freedom is not the lack of Tyranny.

Also, a note about the Yellow bonus for multiple die, @yrsillar did the automatic success for Argent vent just increase to 8, or is it just the other bonuses?

Freedom from restriction, freedom from the heavens, from fate, from misfortune. The unbound freedom that your fist's freedom of motion extends to faces you don't like. The freedom to shelter friends and not care if it turns the world against you. The freedom to travel. The freedom to settle. To be unbound. The freedom to make redicously promises, and follow through. The freedom to be kind, and not worry about the cost of kindness. The freedom to take vengeance, and only dig one grave.

Freedom is the most common and selfish cultivator goal, and to every question about 'freedom to what' the answer is yes.
