I seems rather hypocritical to first attack the Licori for fiddling around with their crazy superscience in foreign space, and then to start fiddling around with their crazy superscience in foreign space ourselves.

Much as I would love to examine the Arcadian scientific equipment more closely, I'll let the Ked Paddah act as bomb-disposal team. Admittedly, firing high energy blasts into debris that is believed capable of blowing up the system if disturbed seems odd, but they've been countering Arcadian mad science for years; they are the experts, and I will trust them.

Certainly. You've probably seen the latest escort frigate designs, I feel confident they fit the needs of the fleet in the new combat engine.

Poli Sci major here. The main military arm of a confederation being the majority owner of WMD production abilities is completely normal.

This "starfleet is mostly autonomous" thing is outright made up, though.


Shockingly, things that are signs of dysfunction in a planet-bound regional polity may not be signs of dysfunction in a interstellar conferation. Especially when it's not the same thing, just vaguely similar.

Those diplomats only have trouble getting around without us if they need extremely rapid transit or insertion into a live fire zone. Those are hardware limitations, though.

The intel services thing is assuming without evidence that the member planets don't have in-house intel assets and forgetting that diplomatic services are fairly potent intel agencies in their own right.

As I said, Oneiros tracks the imports and exports of the colonies pretty precisely which is why I am quite comfortable in my statement...


And I am also a polSci student which is why I honestly amazed you maintain the Starfleet setup is realistic/normal...

Everything we've said about this war is about stopping mad science from killing people. These are the 2 options that support that.

They haven't done much so we can have them hunt while we guard for a while.

I feel like all three of these could be connected. The tachyon grid for finding cloaked Romulan ships, the advances the Bene are making and a mysterious freighter moving through Licori space.

The freighter in particular concerns me for 3 reasons. First, it could have Romulan troops inside as a ploy to get them onto Licori worlds like the Romulans tried to do to Vulcan that one time. Second, it could be loaded with a suicide super weapon by one of the Houses we've broken being sent against us as we feared from the start. And third, it could be some of the leaders of those destroyed houses escaping and planning revenge.

Starfleet refuses to be termed a military because that would put the combatant role first. Starfleet refuses to accept and use the label of 'battlecruiser' for its explorer class vessels because that would put the combatant role first.

Starfleet wants to put the exploration role first and the combat role last so that when people speak of Starfleet they speak of daring and respectable explorers, not violent and destructive thugs. sorry, this sounds rather senseless. see they *are* a military, and not accepting because what not would go against the type of utopia that the federation is meant to represent. you can have a military force that specializes in exploration.
Honestly, one thing are ideals, which is something Starfleet and the federation do, but another another is treating people like idiots, which is what your statement is doing, because if Starfleet admits is a military it will have to be militaristic about it and have to put exploration and science in the backburner? this is your reasoning and I find it incredibly sad that people living in a near future close to post scarcity are so... limited
 
I'm honestly on the fence a bit about the KED vote. I understand the point others are making about the hazards. At the same time, I do want us to get at least some information about what these exotic devices and weapons were before destroying them.

I'd be greatly reassured if the Ked Paddah have a standard protocol like "do thorough sensor scans of this stuff before pushing it into the sun." Although in THIS particular case, "push it into the sun" specifically might not be such a good idea since there could be a physical substance that does terrible things to suns.


Also... @Chaos Blade , @Hazard , we've got other things to discuss right now, and the "how military is Starfleet" debate has been bickered over for at least the last twenty to thirty years. Can we just... agree let the matter drop?

Aside from wanting to rephrase "interference" a bit just because of a little perverse voice, saying that it seems a bit prejudicial to say that Klingons "outreach" while Romulans "interfere," I like it.

More to the point, I am not happy with the idea of poking at the Bene, while it is something we'd need to eventually pursue, I feel that we need to be certain no Vengeance plot is underway. Remeber our mandate is to neutralize the mentats as a threat to the federation, so... while letting the Bene be could hurt us long term... I feel we should concentrate short term right now. if some malcontent manages to get a mentat close to one of our systems...
