We'd need to get through all of their defenses to get to the sun.

Would that stop subspace weapons? Or the sensor satellites?
We Normandy the system, come up over the galactic plane and dive towards it.

They are in science fiction!
They are, except for strays captured (conservation of angular momentum during system formation when the gas cloud collapses).
Except for the Oort cloud, but that's rounding errors with regard to total mass.Generally the solar system will be in one orbital plane, and relatively flat.

*Grumble Grumble* I know this isn't a topic to get into but still annoys me that Federation is still being unwilling to at least do contained augment research in hopes of making it safer. This time Thuir grimaces. "Ah, yes, the augments. We don't like to speak of that time much, but even though much was lost at the time, we also learned the folly of augmentation. It is very much a forbidden technology these days."
Anyone else extremely nervous about the new research station orbiting the star of unknown purpose? We know the Licori have the means to weaponize a star, and they may have a less suicidal weapon ready there. I'm strongly tempted to take that one out, because at least the other ones are of known capabilities.
