A Day in the Life of the Duck-Billed Dabbler
For as long as he could remember, Dr. Starline had always been dedicated to his work. Accordingly, he was used to waking early to get an early start. Even so, ever since he had returned Doctor Eggman to his proper state of mind, Starline had to adjust to waking up even earlier. Every day, bleary eyed, he forced himself to the space Stone had turned into a makeshift mess hall. There, he found a hot cup of delicious coffee made by the human.
Privately, Starline doubted that, for all her boasting about her discipline and martial prowess, even Conquering Storm and her Egg Clan woke as early as the two of them. Warmed by the beverage and invigorated by the caffeine, Starline and Stone nodded to one another and began their work. It wasn't as grandiose as the platypus had hoped, but… he remembered what the other man had said. He could not try to hold himself as an equal to Eggman, it would be better to focus his efforts on the good of the empire instead.
Thus, Starline and Stone had been focusing their efforts on the administrative and logistic half of things, leaving Doctor Eggman free to focus his brilliance on planning his conquest, research and strategy. The two had developed a system.
They would go over reports so that only the ones important enough to warrant the good doctor's attention came across his desk, so to speak. Stone and Starline would also verify any information about opportunities, updates on the movements of people of interest, news about outside organizations that the good doctor had mockingly referred to as 'rival reports,' and so on.
Sage did her part as well, efficiently summarizing the information. However, she did not yet have the judgment to determine what truly was and was not worth Doctor Eggman's time. Any minutiae that Starline and Stone agreed was insufficient, the three of them tended to handle themselves.
Starline had begun this work following his injuries after the auction, a way to continue to assist Doctor Eggman even while bedridden, and Stone joined him soon after. It was an ever expanding duty as the scope of the Eggman Empire's operations expanded by the month. Yet the division of labor increasingly fell on the platypus, as Stone also had his growing responsibilities as a field agent and the occasional training he received from Conquering Storm.
Stone was receiving personal assignments from his idol, while he was acting as a mere secretary!
Starline forced himself to swallow his envy. He had to keep in mind that he simply had not yet shown Eggman results. The platypus just did not have the time to devote to his projects, projects that he was sure would impress the man, even if they might not be equal to the genius's own. Starline just hoped he would have a breakthrough soon or receive an assignment. Any opportunity to show his worth!
Starline let out a huff, then glanced at Stone who looked up in response to the noise. Starline looked back down at his work.
"It's nothing," Starline said churlishly. Attention from
Stone was simply not what he wanted. Not before he'd had the chance to show his own brilliance. Finishing with the documents, Starline abruptly got up.
"My work is complete and I have other things in need of my attention," he snapped. Without waiting for a response, he stormed off into a portal made by the Warp Topaz.
Starline's first visit was to the center of the soon to be Egg City. Before its construction, he had not known how much work went into building a city. Starline, of course, intellectually knew that it was a great undertaking, but theoretical knowledge required testing to truly understand.
There the platypus met Isara and her crew of Darcsen peons. "The same Badniks as yesterday?" he said, looking over a map of their territory in his hands.
"Yes, I-"
"Spare me the explanation," Starline interrupted, not noticing how the human laborers rolled their eyes, used to his behavior by this point. "If the Doctor gave you instructions, you will of course see them through."
Manipulating the Warp Topaz, Starline opened up a series of portals throughout their territory with practiced ease. With so few Badniks available, especially after Conquering Storm had managed to lose almost all of the ones they could spare for her offensive, Starline knew that their security needed to be tighter than ever. There could be no transit time, no windows where any enemy could slip by. Especially with the sniper's whereabouts still unknown.
The Badniks chosen from throughout Green Hills immediately moved into his portals to seamlessly relieve the Quizons from their own patrols. The Quizons in turn were portalled to their secret base, where they had kept the materials for the city's construction. Moving through another gateway created by the Warp Topaz, they emerged into the early morning's light with their load in tow.
"Inform me when the materials are depleted for the next portal," Starline commanded. "Doctor Eggman's city will not be completed
late."
"Of course!" Isara smiled at him and gave a small bow. "Thank you for all your assistance, Doctor Starline! At this rate, we should finish a week earlier than we originally estimated."
"Hmph! Of course," Starline preened. This wasn't what he wanted to work on, but the girl was at least properly appreciative of his aid. He was sure he could finish the construction in a timely manner if he was helming the project himself, but the doctor had not assigned him the task. Until he was given that honor, ensuring its swift completion was a small addition to his self-imposed duties.
Isara had been chosen directly by Doctor Eggman. Surely, it was
almost like working for the man himself, right!?
Starline's next visit was to Conquering Storm's chambers. There, he saw something that made his blood boil.
"Stop! Stop!" he demanded, as the ninja forced herself through a brutal exercise regimen. Starline ignored the glare she gave him in response. "I told you that you needed to let your injuries heal! Anyone with half a brain should be more than capable of following such simple instructions! Are you trying to waste the time I spent on you!?"
"I will not wallow in weakness and it would be
most unwise to insult me further," Conquering Storm growled out in response, but the lynx couldn't hide her body's trembling. "You do not know my capabilities. I will not permit my body to grow slack."
"You'll be no good to the Doctor if you pull something and die of internal bleeding," Starline sniffed and opened another portal. "You
will come for a check-up. Then, if you insist on this foolish endeavor, I will give you a list of exercises you can perform
without undoing my efforts to keep you alive."
Starline entered the spatial distortion and half turned, watching as Conquering Storm followed him to the infirmary. Once she sat down, Starline undid the bandages to inspect the damage, before redressing the wounds. Neither cared for modesty. It had no place on the battlefield nor in medicine.
"Currently there are no significant complications, despite your stubbornness," Starline informed the ninja. "If you
must strain your body, focus on breathing exercises, flexibility, and limb strength that doesn't strain your core."
"Very well," Conquering Storm acquiesced with a sigh. "For now, I will limit my training. If only to hasten my return to the battlefield."
Starline nodded, but internally the platypus seethed. No doubt the meathead would think she knew better than he! Just because she was the refuse of another world, where she was one of the alternate Doctor Eggman's personal 'Egg Bosses.' Bah! Time spent treating her was time that he could not further his own research when he was already so far behind!
Still, since he was here, he may as well get his tools to check on another of the doctor's projects…
Starline stowed his medical equipment as Cassia bounced anxiously on her bed. "Well? I should be out of here soon, right? No problems or anything?"
Starline rolled his eyes. The foolish girl asked him
every time! "You will be out when the procedure is complete and Doctor Eggman says you may leave. The sensors have found no issues in your bio-data. Similarly, your body no longer shows any sign of rejecting your cybernetics, despite the changes to your genome."
As the pronghorn breathed out a sigh of relief, Starline continued. "If you experience any lasting soreness, inflammation or burning sensations, you are to alert Sage
immediately. Understand?"
It was now Cassia's turn to roll her eyes. "Yeah, yeah. Geeze, you tell me the same thing every check up, I'm not going to forget."
"You'd better not. I'd hate to see my, or the Doctor's, time go to waste." His piece said, Starline left and passed through the decontamination chamber. As the platypus underwent the process, Starline would admit, he was irked that he had not been included in this project from the onset. He had little interest in curing Cassia, but surely his expertise would have been helpful for treating someone with cybernetics!? The field was one of his specialties!
It had been on a whim that he checked on Cassia, early in her treatment. The doctor's brilliance was evident in the procedure, of course, and Eggman had been entering into an entirely new field. To see what he could learn from his example was an incredible opportunity!
Yet, Starline had been aghast when he looked at the girl. Doctor Eggman's procedure itself was without flaw, obviously, but had failed to take into account that Cassia was a cyborg in her treatment. Her cybernetics were showing early signs of rejection, so Starline silently stepped in to prevent any further complications.
It would be a disaster if they lost the younger Pronghorn! Without her they would likely lose a skilled operative in Clove, even if she was another of that
other Doctor's Egg Bosses. Much more importantly, one of Doctor Eggman's projects could not be allowed to fail.
Whenever the signal from Isara came, Starline did not lose stride as he continued his current task. A wave of his hand opened a portal between Egg City and their hidden base opened up long enough for the Quizons and Darcsen laborers to retrieve more construction materials before it snapped shut. It was only one of a series of wormholes Starline had created spanning Green Hill.
Using each portal as a window, Starline watched and recorded. While the sniper still eluded him, Starline did his best to ensure that any future operations would go smoothly.
Checking points throughout their territory for infiltration. Probing the borders between the Eggman Empire and their neighbors for troop movements and concentrations. Checking that the designated points he had in each territory remained undisturbed for easy infiltration and extraction. Starline even checked that the locations of the individuals he had marked as potential targets for recruitment were up to date, in case the Doctor decided that there was use for them.
Did his coworkers think that it was as simple as waving his hand and they would have a portal to drop them wherever they wanted to go!? Of course not! They needed up to date information. If the cat, or more typically Belle, were sent to bring someone into the fold, failing to do so would just leave them to wander randomly in search of their assignment.
At the thought of the wooden Badnik, Starline could not help but form a small scowl. Although he had no personal issue with Belle herself, yet the girl still
infuriated him! By all accounts, the most special thing about her was her creator, that insipid Mr. Tinker who was Doctor Eggman's amnesiac, small-minded persona. From that perspective, he would love to study her.
But that was not the source of his frustration! No, it was how much attention that his idol lavished on her! What should have been at most a curiosity, unique origin or not, got assignments to expand the Eggman Empire's greatness, personalized equipment, and to speak with him! Just for being an extra pair of hands and the ability to do something as banal as talking to people!
While he-!
Starline forced himself to breathe in and out. Self-delusion would do him no good here.
He had
failed. Almost every task he had been a part of had failed. Even at the auction, it had come down to Stone to retreat with the Lance and Canaan to fend off their attackers. All he'd done was almost bleed out. Everyone in the Eggman Empire had successes to their names. Everyone but Dr. Starline.
Starline let out a mirthless chuckle. No wonder Doctor Eggman did not delegate any tasks to him, he had given him no reason to trust his abilities.
… He would have to work harder, to make up for lost time. There was still a bit of time left in the day, he had to have enough time to further at least one of his own projects!
With a wave of his hand, Starline closed the portals and set about packing up as quickly as he could. Yet, as he rose to do so, he stumbled. Starline grimaced as he no longer had a distraction from a pounding headache. He… had worked too hard and was at his limit. Again. In his current condition, he'd make little progress.
He would have to head to bed and rest. Dr. Starline had to be at his best for his work tomorrow, to help grow the Eggman Empire. Even then, surely tomorrow he could make the time for his own projects or find another way to prove himself to Doctor Eggman. Right?
A/N: And that's a wrap. For a while, I've wanted to look at what Starline might be up to when we don't give him an assignment. I figure he's still got to be doing
something other than his personal. Thus, Starline, unsung hero of the Eggman Empire.
Despite his whining, I have him doing a
lot here.
He's basically helping micromanage the full Empire, between reviewing information. He's moving Badniks around to maximize efficiency and close weak points. He's the team doctor for any and all medical problems. He's their only expert on cybernetics, when several of the hero units they have are cyborgs. He's their transportation. He laughs in the face of supply lines. He's a potential one-man spy network, with observation, infiltration and exfiltration.
It's just not
big enough for his tastes, since it's not attention grabbing. Specifically grabbing Eggman's attention. Ultimately, Starline is a petty spiteful man, fueled by insecurity. The limit to his drive is also coming up, which means he's getting into a rut, potentially close to his breaking point, which lent itself well to a sense of envy masking the desperation that I wanted to underlie the whole thing until it became more blatant in the end.
