Unbreakable Like a Stone
Stone's father had been in the military. And his father before him. And his father before him. And so on and so forth.
It wasn't something Stone thought about often. By throwing his lot in with The Doctor, he had long since betrayed his father's ideals.
Stone had never regretted it. He still didn't.
As far as his father had known before his passing, he was still in the military, and their final conversation had been pleasant enough. He supposed that wasn't technically a lie, he was still technically an agent of GUN, even if his loyalties to Dr. Robotnik would always supercede anything GUN wished for him to do.
…His mother was still alive. Stone wouldn't change anything, but sometimes, he would think of her. Wonder if she was out there in this new world.
"Your name is Stone because you are tough, unbreakable, like a rock. Never forget that, my son."
Why was he thinking about all this anyways?
A little yawning reminded him why.
"Are you tired, Latte?" You asked fondly. Latte nodded, whining. You chuckled despite yourself as you picked him up and tucked him in your bed. He cooed before turning on his side and falling asleep.
You sighed as you looked over him.
You liked to consider yourself a competent man. You had to be to keep up with the Doctor, even if you would never be on his level. But you felt… out of your depth here. Could you really be the father this Chao needed?
You liked to think you were doing a decent job so far, but what if you weren't?
You sighed again and went on a walk. You needed to clear your head.

Many in the Eggman Empire were acquaintances at best. Sure, they were working together, and it's not like they never interacted at all, but there was only so much to talk about when so many had so little in common.
Three such individuals who didn't talk much were Dr. Starline, Conquering Storm and Isara Gunther.
One thing they did have in common? They were friends with one Agent Stone, and had noticed he seemed down lately.
After much debate, they decided to ask him what was wrong.
The trio eventually found him walking around the Egg City, handing out coffee to its citizens.
"Mr. Stone, can we talk?" You, Isara, inquired.
Stone looked up, and seemed momentarily surprised to see all three of you together, but hid it well soon enough.
"Of course, everyone. Always happy to help, especially you Young Miss Gunth-" He started.
"What has been wrong?" Conquering Storm interrupted. Stone blinked and Starline face palmed.
"What my blunt ally here means, Stone, is something has clearly been on your mind. Now, I do not claim us to be besties or anything ridiculous like that, but we have been through a decent amount together. It would be… inconvenient if this were to affect any missions." The Platypus explained.
"I would never allow such things to get in the way of The Doctor's plans. Do not fret." Stone assured. You frowned and sighed at the other two's lack of social grace.
"It's not just about that, Mr. Stone! We have been worried about you because we're your friends. These two just aren't good at expressing it." You explained.
Starline and Conquering Storm glared at you, but notably didn't correct you. Stone's expression softened as he rolled his shoulders.
"It's…nothing major. I just… I handled a lot of responsibility, back home. Back with my original Dr. Robotnik. But it didn't prepare me to take care of a child. I… I am scared. When my father died, I didn't hate him or anything, but … I didn't feel much either. We were never close. And I am afraid of having a similar relationship with Latte, someday. Maybe worse." He admitted, sitting down.
"That's preposterous. You have been taking wonderful care of that weak creature!" Conquering Storm scoffed. Starline nodded in agreement, folding his arms.
Stone smiled, clearly appreciative despite the bluntness, but didn't seem fully convinced. You sighed.
"...You know, Mr. Stone, I … My original father is dead. My adoptive father is dead. I loved both, very much. But they weren't perfect people. No one is. But you know what? They tried their best, and for the most part, they succeeded. You can't see the future, you don't know what will happen. But if you just keep trying, as you have, then I think it will all work out." You assured.
Stone looked up, and stared you in the eyes, as if searching for something. Pity? Falsehoods? You were not sure. Whatever it was, he seemed satisfied as he smiled, softly but more genuinely.
"...Thank you, everyone. This… this means a lot." He said sincerely.
"...You would do the same for us." Starline muttered, before the four of you fell into comfortable silence, people watching on a bench.
"...I am sorry about your fathers, Isara." Stone gave his condolences. If he noticed he had used your first name this time, he didn't seem to show it. You took his hand without thinking about it.
"It's ok, Stone. They'll always be in my heart. And … I think I have the closest to the next best thing."
